[edit] Detailed Walkthrough

[edit] On the Border

Twenty four in-game hours after the expansion is installed, you will be prompted with a new quest message, suggesting that you investigate rumors concerning an island that has suddenly appeared without explanation in Niben Bay. Follow the quest marker to a small island southeast of Bravil.

Approaching the landmark, it quickly becomes apparent that this is no ordinary island. With twisted, otherworldly geography populated with vegetation found nowhere else in Cyrodiil, the island is an oddity in and of itself - and certainly worth investigating.

Near the peak of the island stands Gaius Prentus, a Bravil guard, and S'fara, an unhinged female Khajiit, as well as a strange statue of three faces displaying drastically different emotions joined at their eyes. What seems to be a rift in the space-time continuum itself appears to emanate from the mouth of the central face, glowing a heavenly shade of blue. This is the "Strange Door" mentioned in the rumor mills and your journal, but you are currently unable to enter. Speaking to Gaius explains that he is not here to investigate, unlike you, but to warn. Adventurers like yourself have entered as well, and when they exited, were violently insane and attacked anything on sight. Gaius is here to both warn people from entering, and if they do not heed his warning, "clean up the mess" when they reemerge. Soon, a living example of those who have returned soon joins you: Belmyne Dreleth. Following a short bout of screaming nonsensical rants, Belmyne will attack, just as predicted, and be subsequently killed by Gaius.

Shortly after, an unseen voice condemns Belmyne for his weakness and beckons for a true champion to save his realm. The voice reveals the world beyond is dubbed the "Shivering Isles," the plane of Oblivion belonging to Sheogorath, the Daedric Prince of Madness. Wait for his monologue to end, and once you're ready, enter the door.

[edit] Butterflies in Mind

Upon entering the door, you find yourself in a small, pitch black room. A door directly opposite you leads outside, but between you and the exit is a desk. Seated at the desk, upon which sits a metronome ticking ominously and a copy of The Madness of Pelagius, is a male Breton. The Breton, Haskill, invites you to take the available seat. He explains that Sheogorath is looking for a champion amongst mortals, someone with the strength of mind and body to help Sheogorath with an upcoming cataclysm, and extends this offer to you.

Accept Haskill's offer. Pleased, he instructs you to see Sheogorath in his palace for further instructions - presuming you survive the journey there. He stands up and exits the door just before the entire room seems to disintegrate, light streaming in through holes growing ever larger, as it becomes apparent that the room was not a room at all but a shelter made of a swarm of fluorescent butterflies. The peculiar creatures fly away into the skies of the Isles to an uncertain fate, leaving you free to explore.

However, you are not actually inside the Isles yet. Rather, you are inside the Fringe, an enclosed area designed to test those who wish to enter. If you want to pass through, you must overcome the obstacles within.

[edit] Notes

  • Occasionally, the first quest update may take longer than twenty-four hours or as short as three hours.
  • If you have trouble not getting the quest after 1 day, or if you are simply impatient, open console and type setstage se01door 10 to automatically trigger this quest. Alternatively, you can simply travel to the island, which will also initiate the quest. The island is present regardless of whether you have the quest or not. (Although if you do not have the quest, it will not be marked on your map)

[edit] Bugs

  • It is possible that when you try to sit down during this quest, you will appear to remain standing. This bug is actually a consequence of an animation problem triggered by the end of the Umaril the Unfeathered (part of the Knights of the Nine mod). However, the bug is purely a visual problem. Even though you appear to still be standing, the quest will proceed: all of the butterflies will disappear, after which nothing may seem to happen for 10-30 seconds, but eventually the game will resume.

Notes
  • Not all Journal Entries may appear in your journal; which entries appear and which entries do not depends on the manner in which the quest is done.
  • Stages are not always in order of progress. This is usually the case with quests that have multiple possible outcomes or quests where certain tasks may be done in random order.
  • If an entry is marked as "Finishes Quest" it means the quest disappears from the Active Quest list, but you may still receive new entries for that quest.
  • On the PC, it is possible to use the console to advance through the quest by entering setstage quest stage. Where quest is the internal name of the quest, and stage is the number of the stage you wish to complete. It is not possible to un-complete (i.e. go back) quest stages. See SetStage for more information.
