Relmyna Verenim is a female Dunmer that normally resides in Xaselm. Upon entering the Isles for the first time, before The Fringe is attacked, she stays at The Wastrel's Purse in Passwall where she tutors her apprentice, Nanette. A rare individual in the Shivering Isles, Relmyna was actually chosen and brought over by Lord Sheogorath himself. She had previously and repeatedly been outcast and shunned from the Mages Guild for her interest, theories, and subsequent physical human trials on pain and suffering. Sheogorath, however, so admired her "fresh" way of thinking and lack-of-remorse or sympathy for other individuals, that he found her perfect as an inhabitant of the Isles (where she is allowed to experiment all she wants). Relmyna is the creator of the Gatekeeper that guards the Gates of Madness from unworthy adventurers.

Relmyna has a rather bi-polar attitude. If you treat her the way she believes she should be treated, she will treat you with incomparable kindness. However, if you displease her even slightly, she will show rage and an uncontrollable temper. Nanette Don, the apprentice, has had many run-ins with Relmyna's temper. Nanette will often explain how she is beaten mercilessly by Relmyna and influenced under the threat of torture. During her time in Xaselm, Relmyna conducts many unspeakably violent experiments on unlucky individuals and creatures, all in the name of research. She records and logs her theories on each intended "study" and often the results of previous trials in various notes which can be found throughout Xaselm. It would also appear that Relmyna had a prior love affair with Sheogorath himself. Both she and Sheogorath make hints to this on several occasions. A note written by Relmyna and found in her bedroom at the Wastrel's Purse, shows further evidence of the situation.

• By discussing the "Victims" topic with Relmyna, the player can persuade her to stop torturing her prisoners, though she will strike the player with a very powerful attribute-damaging spell in return (Exalted Pain - 1 point of damage to Agility, Endurance, Strength and Willpower, and 10 points damage to Health and Magicka). Even then she will not free the prisoners from their cells. Speak to Relmyna again about "Exalted Pain" to receive the Manacles of Pain. Once Relmyna has served her purpose in the Main Quest she can safely be killed, though this also will not free the prisoners (who will, indeed, panic at the sight of her death in the same way any other NPC witnessing a murder would).
