[edit] Detailed Walkthrough
[edit] Double Vision
Go to the town of Split just below the northernmost lake just below Overlook Road. The town is situated directly on the Mania/Dementia border, and has two copies of each NPC - one Manic, and one Demented. Talk with the locals, and you'll find that both sides want their opposites dead. They will direct you to Horkvir Bear-Arms.
Since there are two Horkvirs, you can speak with either one. Do so, and they will both provide you with some backstory: a mage believed that every person had both a Manic and Demented side, and decided to experiment by casting a spell that split the two personalities. The two sides have since been constantly at odds, and both are vying for control of the town. Due to the laws of the realm, however, nobody is willing to get rid of the other side themselves since killing one's self would result in spending an eternity on the Hill of Suicide. That's where you come in. The Manic Horkvir will then ask you to kill all the Demented, and the Demented Horkvir will ask you to kill all the Manics. You can then talk to the other Horkvir for the same information, and the opposite request. Eventually, though, you'll need to pick a side - talk to the appropriate Horkvir and tell him that you'll help (once you do this, the side you didn't choose will no longer talk to you).
[edit] Cutting Excess
Do not kill any NPCs before you agree with one of the two Horkvirs or the quest will be failed. Travel around town and kill either all the Manics or all the Demented, depending on which Horkvir you agreed to help. Be careful, though - if you kill the wrong NPC, you'll forfeit your reward. Make sure the quest arrow is pointing at your target before you kill them; sneaking into their houses at night will also make their alignment clear. Remember that the people from Mania usually wear brighter and more vividly colored clothing than the people from Dementia. Killing any of the residents (on either side) before agreeing to assist Horkvir, or killing someone on the 'wrong' side after making your choice will result in failing the quest.
You need to kill the following in any order:
The killings count as murder if you're seen, so be careful. The safest bet is to sneak into the houses at night (all of the locks have a "Very Easy" rating, so not much skill is required) and either pickpocket a Poison Apple into the NPCs' inventory or simply sneak attack them while they sleep.
If using poisoned apples, be aware that both versions of J'zidzo have a habit of picking the pockets of the other NPCs. It is possible to fail the quest because the version on your chosen side eats an apple intended for somebody else.
If you are trying to play a good character then ignore this quest, as there is no "peaceful" way to resolve it, only murder (direct or indirect).
No matter how you kill them, return to the surviving Horkvir for a leveled gold reward.
[edit] Bugs
- It is very difficult to kill either of the Atrabhis without getting a murder bounty, even if there are no other NPCs around. Her Responsibility score of 100 enables her to hand out bounty as if she were a guard. Killing her may require a single hit (i.e., a backstab), or more subtle methods such as a Poisoned Apple or Chokeberry.
This bug is fixed by the Unofficial Shivering Isles Patch.
- There is a bug in the reward script, and you may get as little as half the amount listed above.

- There are a lot of respawning monsters in close proximity to Split. It's quite possible for a resident of Split to be killed by accident before you begin the quest. In that case, the residents will never speak to you about their "Doubles" problems and you will be unable to obtain the quest. There is, however, no warning that this has occurred, and occasionally, the bodies may even disappear, so you'll have no way to tell short of verifying the presence of each resident.
[edit] Journal Entries
- Notes
- Not all Journal Entries may appear in your journal; which entries appear and which entries do not depends on the manner in which the quest is done.
- Stages are not always in order of progress. This is usually the case with quests that have multiple possible outcomes or quests where certain tasks may be done in random order.
- If an entry is marked as "Finishes Quest" it means the quest disappears from the Active Quest list, but you may still receive new entries for that quest.
- On the PC, it is possible to use the console to advance through the quest by entering
setstage SE46 stage. Wherestageis the number of the stage you wish to complete. It is not possible to un-complete (i.e. go back) quest stages. See SetStage for more information.
