Xaselm is a large ruin east of the Gates of Madness that is the sanctum of Relmyna Verenim, containing Monsters (quest-related). [edit] It contains four zones: Xaselm, Xaselm, Experiment Chambers, Xaselm, Corpse Pit, and Xaselm, Sanctum of Vivisection.

Description

Xaselm serves as arguably one of the most sadistic, depraved, and violent areas of the entire Oblivion/Isles world(s). It also stands as one of the most inventive and entertaining displays of Creature and NPC experimentation available. The ruin itself is far from abandoned as it actually serves Relmyna Verenim, originally met at Passwall, as her personal sanctuary and "research" area. The first two zones, 'Xaselm' and 'Chamber of Experimentation', are heavily guarded by her minions and an assortment of varying traps. The third zone is quite short in itself as it is simply a massive 'Corpse Pit' with an accompanying "disposal" hole in the ground, layered with shallow water and a large discarded number of bodies in various stages of decay. The final zone, 'Sanctum of Vivisection', is Relmyna's personal quarters that she shares with her fearful apprentice Nanette Don and a variety of unfortunate characters awaiting her next hypothesis.

Essentially, Xaselm lies in Dementia although it can be described as bordering Mania. There are two separate entrances inside, the first "main" entrance is the one which will first be entered and is more on the Dementia side, there is a 'Xaselm Secret Entrance' slightly to the northwest which can be seen as being on the Mania side. Initially, the secret entrance is locked however and requires a key obtained during the related quest. As the ruin is explored, each zone will have a number of different experiment chambers that Relmyna has set up for testing her theories on different reactions to pain, dismemberment, organ replacement/alteration, and survivability when faced with overwhelming odds and wanton hunger. A few examples are, bolting someone to a wall and firing arrow traps at them repeatedly. Releasing a starved and blood craven Hunger and Shambles to fight over a virgin Altmer. Persistently burning someone alive and resurrecting them, and replacing the blood of a Skinned Hound with that of a sunbaked rotted Elf corpse to see how it plays on the ability to fight another Hound to its death. All of the experiments can be read about, including Relmyna's hypothesis on the outcome, by checking for an accompanying note in the particular "chamber" that you're in.

Due to the massive amount of "testing" Relmyna is doing here, the first three zones are also brimming with a unique type of zombie, simply called "Failed Experiment". They are particularly sneaky given that they look like normal corpses until they "awaken" when you are only a couple of yards away; not even Detect Life spells pick them up until their "awakening" has completed. They are always found near decaying bodies making them impossible to identify by eye.

Notes

  • There is a back entrance into Xaselm, which bypasses all the earlier sections populated by undead. The door is locked and requires a key to enter. You'll be given the key by Relmyna when you get there during the quest.
  • One test zone related to this ruin didn't make it to the game. XPXaselm05 is the console code for an Ayleid Ruin-like area called "Xaselm" that links to nothing else.
  • This ruin contains 4 Thorn Hook plants, 16 Root Stalk plants, and 40 Withering Moon plants.
