A Zealot

Zealots are extremists who support Sheogorath and believe that Arden-Sul was his mortal aspect. They consider everyone else to be non-believers and Heretics. They tend to make camp on the Dementia side of the Isles, but can also be found in various ruins and caves, as summarized at Zealot Dungeons. Like everything in the Isles, they have an equal, polar opposite, that is to say, the Heretics of Mania.

Overview[edit]

Like conjurers and their Heretic counterparts, Zealots usually rely on summon spells in battle, while also firing Destruction spells and healing themselves. They tend to favor blade weaponry to blunt weaponry.

There are 12 types of Zealot: Ascended Zealot, Preserved Zealot, Zealot Arbiter, Zealot Crusader, Zealot Guard, Zealot Guardian, Zealot Matriarch, Zealot Minion, Zealot Missionary, Zealot Neophyte, Zealot Patriarch, and Zealot Prosleytizer [sic].

It is possible to take their robes and deceive other Zealots through disguise, but only at a distance. If you get too close, they will see through the ruse and begin to attack. Even after you have become Sheogorath, many will still attack you.

Zealots are often found in the company of Flesh Atronachs, whom they can also summon in battle. Shambles are also non-hostile towards Zealots. These undead minions will be similarly fooled if you disguise yourself as a Zealot, and will not attack even if you get too close.

Leveled List[edit]

The following table lists only standard Zealots, i.e., those that are generated from standard Leveled Lists. This includes the vast majority of Zealots encountered during the game.

  • The level provided for each creature in the Lvl column is the typical level at which the variety is first encountered.
  • Bosses are always female and have a chance of carrying an enchanted weapon from level 4 and a generic staff from level 6 (see Bugs).

The following table summarizes the vast majority of the leveled lists that are used to generate standard Zealots. There are some dungeon-specific Zealots that are not covered by this table. See Leveled Lists for details on how these lists are used to determine the probabilities of individual creatures/varieties appearing.

Standard Boss
Zealot
Zealot Neophyte 1 1
Zealot Missionary 8 6
Zealot Prosleytizer [sic] / Proselytizer 13 11
Zealot Patriarch/Matriarch 18 16
Ascended Zealot 23 21

Spells[edit]

All Zealots have a special Zealot Birthsign that provides them with the following permanent bonuses:

In addition, all Zealots have a set of leveled Zealot Spells. In each case, the effect is randomly determined from the following list; the strength of the spell is randomly determined based on the Zealot's skill level (also for bosses). The possible effects for each school are:

"Boss" Zealots have an identical spell set to regular Zealots, with the exception of a higher-level Summon Flesh Atronach spell (always strongest possible for their skill level).

† This staff is from a special loot list. As a consequence these Zealots may carry all varieties of Generic Staves in the game, including powerful Paralyze, Damage Fatigue and Turn Undead variations.

‡ The average and maximum number of potions that may appear changes depending upon your level, as does the quality of the potions. Individual Restore Health potions have a 19% chance of appearing.

* This item may be enchanted, starting from 11% chance from level 4, rising to 20% from level 9. Short Blades may be either Daggers or Shortswords; Long Blades may be Longswords or Claymores.

** This item may be enchanted, starting from 20% chance from level 3, rising to 25% from level 7 and 30% from level 9. Of the pair of Light Boots, only one is enchanted.

***These scrolls are from a special list, meaning these Zealots can carry a wider variety of scrolls.

Level: This is the NPC's level relative to your character.

Inventory:

  • All items without a percentage next to them are guaranteed to be present on an NPC (although some items, such as potions or poisons could be used before you get a chance to loot them). Healing potions are always strongest for their level.
  • Items with a percentage will only appear randomly.
  • The quality of all weapons is determined by the Weapons Leveled List; for staves see Generic Staves.

Notes[edit]

  • Zealots are the only generic magical NPC enemies to wear armor, specifically light armor.
  • Zealot Guardians have an Aggression of 90, which means they can be talked to much more easily than other Zealots, all of whom have an aggression of 100.
