The entrance to the Abandoned Prison

The Abandoned Prison is a collapsed, partially flooded Imperial prison inhabited by the ghosts of its drowned prisoners.

[edit] Exterior

There are two entrances into the abandoned prison. The first is the marked main entrance and is located along the White River as you approach Fort Amol. The second is a hidden exit underneath the bridge along the river just east of the main entrance. It is not possible to explore the entire prison if you enter via the hatch under the bridge due to a one-way drop inside the prison. There is a hidden chest in the collapsed turret directly above the main entrance. On the river bank opposite the main entrance is a corundum ore vein.

You enter the prison on the second level of a circular tower. Rubble blocks the stairs leading up to higher levels. There is plenty of hanging moss to be harvested on the two accessible floors of the tower. Proceeding down the stairs to the right of the entrance, you will pass a large sack, an empty bucket sitting on a box, and a wardrobe with an unlocked chest sitting on top of it. In the center of the lower level of the tower is an open chest with an iron battleaxe, a Solution of Regeneration, and a poison inside. Against the west wall is a leveled healing potion sitting on a box next to a food barrel with another empty bucket on top of it. In the northwest corner of the lower level, more rubble blocks access to lower levels of the tower. A table between the rubble and an open door holds a large sack, while another sack rests on the floor below the table.

Head north through the open door down some stairs to a guard room. The table in front of you holds only a few dishes. Through the open door to the west is an inaccessible bookcase leaning against the wall next to a large sack and another bookcase. The second bookcase holds a large sack, a weak poison, a potion of strength, a piece of sliced goat cheese, and some horker meat. At the back of the room is a small table with an iron dagger, an inkwell, a goblet, a coin purse, two pieces of gold, and the guard's orders for evacuating the prison. An Imperial sword and an Imperial bow can be found in a weapons rack to the right of the small table. To the right of the weapons rack an Imperial shield is leaning against a stack of boxes with a bowl of apple cabbage stew and a goblet sitting on top.

Continue east down another flight of stairs to a small room. At the north end of the room, collapsed beams block access to a lit corridor that is patrolled by a ghost. He can be sniped at with a ranged weapon, or he can be left for later as you explore farther into the prison. Moving around the rest of the small room, you will find a pair of Imperial light boots on top of a dresser and, on the other side of the doorway, two sets of shelves. One holds a pair of leather bracers, an iron mace, a lantern, and a few dishes. The other holds three potions of minor healing, a bowl, four iron ingots, a pair of leather boots, and a pair of iron boots. To the south more rubble blocks another passage.

The route east goes down another flight of stairs to the jail cells. Two ghosts inhabit this room: one ghost is in the first cell on the north side of the room, while the other ghost may be sleeping or moving around in the second cell on the south side of the room. Both will attack when alerted to your presence. At the bottom of the stairs as you enter the room is the skeletal remains of one of the prisoners. In addition to the Imperial sword and shield at his side is a note detailing the prisoner's plan to attack the guards and escape through the drainage grate. The cell in the southeast corner of the room has an open trap door in the floor that leads to the escape route mentioned in the note—a flooded passageway that gives access to the secret exit underneath the bridge. Once you drop through the trap door, you will not be able to climb back up to the jail cells, so it is advisable to leave exploration of this area until you have finished exploring the rest of the prison. At the east end of the room is another skeleton next to a table with an iron dagger, a coin purse, and the Abandoned Prison Key on it that opens all of the locked cells in the prison as well as the master-locked chest in the warden's quarters. You can explore the rest of the prison cells in this room to find a few lootable skeletons of prisoners and several unowned bedrolls. The northeast prison cell is protected by an expert lock. At the back of this cell is a hole in the wall that leads into another room with more prison cells.

An elevated corridor runs along the north side of the room. If you have not already dispatched him, the ghost that you saw through the collapsed beams can be found ending his patrol route at the bottom of a flight of stairs in the northwest corner of the room. At the east end of the lower level next to the cells is an unlocked chest and a food barrel. The east end of the elevated corridor has a wardrobe surrounded by three sacks and a large sack. The stairs lead up to the warden's quarters. To the right as you enter the quarters is an overturned end table, an unlocked chest, a potion of minor magicka, and a leather helmet. A skeleton with an Imperial sword and shield lies on the floor in the middle of the room. To the right is an unowned bed, a wardrobe, and a small table. The table holds an iron war axe, a coin purse, four loose septims, and another potion of minor magicka. Moving ahead through the corridor to the south leads to a storage room on the right. There are two bookcases here filled with random books, Legend of the Red Eagle, a few dishes, and four iron ingots. At the other end of the storage room is a copy of the Two-handed skill book Song of Hrormir leaning against a master-locked chest that can be opened with the Abandoned Prison key.

You can now exit the prison through the trap door in the southeast prison cell or backtrack to the main entrance. The escape route takes you past more lootable skeletons. At the west end of the corridor before it turns south to the escape ladder is a barrel with a satchel on top. The number of skeletons scattered around the hatch under the bridge provides more evidence of the prisoners' ill-fated escape attempt.

[edit] Lore

This unnamed Imperial prison was abandoned long ago as a strong storm surged the White River. The guards were ordered to execute the remaining prisoners or just leave them to drown as the prison flooded. The prisoners had devised a plan though to escape through a secret passageway to the river. There they would wait out the flood before fleeing. The exact events are unknown, but the number of skeletal remains found in locked cells suggests that the prisoners were left to drown. Those that attempted to escape through the passageway weren't any luckier as the exit was already entirely underwater and opening it only caused the river to flood in more.

[edit] Notes

  • The prison is across the river from Treasure Map IX on Lucky Lorenz's corpse. His collapsed house can be seen from the top of the crumbling prison tower.
  • East of the prison cells there is a room that can only be reached on the PC by using the 'tcl' console command. The room has no doors, and contains a bucket, a basket, a woodcutter's axe, a mug, and a chest.

[edit] Bugs

  • Fast traveling to the Abandoned Prison with a follower may cause that follower to appear on the river bank opposite the prison's main entrance, with no way of crossing the river itself.
  • Followers may be unable to enter or exit Abandoned Prison through either of the prison's entrances.
    • PC Only This bug is fixed by version 1.2.1 of the Unofficial Skyrim Patch.
    • Pc22.png Followers may be moved inside the prison using the console. Once you are inside, use prid <actor ID> (where <actor ID> is the follower's RefID) and then moveto player to select and move the follower next to you. Followers moved inside the prison in this manner will need to be moved back outside afterwards, due to their inability to follow you through either exit.
