Jarrin Root is given to you by Astrid as part of a Dark Brotherhood quest to assassinate the Emperor. The sample from this quest is the only one available in the game.
It can be used for alchemy if you choose to kill the Emperor in some other way.

[edit] Notes
- If you eat the Jarrin Root, you will receive 200 points of poison damage. With enough health and/or poison resistance, it is possible to survive eating it.
- It is possible to store this item in a container and prevent it from being an added ingredient to the Potage la Magnifique recipe. This will prevent poisoning the target as an assassination option. Even if saved, it cannot be planted in the greenhouses or gardens available through Hearthfire.
- If used to make a damage health poison, with a high enough alchemy skill and the correct perks, the poison can have a magnitude of over 3000 points of damage.
- Combining it with a Human Heart and Blisterwort creates the only five-effect poison available in the base game. The effects of that potion include: Damage Health, Damage Magicka, Damage Magicka Regen, Damage Stamina, and Frenzy.
