Sissel in Rorikstead

Sissel is a Nord child living in Rorikstead. She is the daughter of Lemkil and has a twin sister, Britte. Their mother died after giving birth to the twins and Lemkil now takes his frustrations out on his daughters, a fact that worries the small community to no end.

Sissel wakes up every day at 6am and immediately exits the family house. Britte, however, will be quick to follow and Sissel then spends her entire day on the run from her bullying sister. This goes on for twelve solid hours, until Sissel finally gets a break at 6pm. She then heads over to her only friend, retired mage Jouane Manette in Rorik's Manor who secretly teaches her magic tricks so she can defend herself. At 8pm, with nothing better to do, Sissel reluctantly returns to the house, where she stays until her bedtime at midnight.

Sissel wears a set of child's clothes with a pair of shoes. She carries a variety of food and toys, a belted tunic and the key to the house.

If orphaned, Sissel and her sister will move to the Honorhall Orphanage in Riften, where they are adoptable.

Dialogue[edit]

Even though her life in Rorikstead is hard, Sissel has hopes and dreams for the future:

"I wish I could be an adventurer like you, and go wherever I want."
"I had a dream that there was a good dragon. He was old and gray, but he wasn't scary."

She also reveals how she is treated by her own family:

"Most days, I do all I can to stay away from my sister and my father. The beating's the same from either one."

Nevertheless she sees the light at the end of the tunnel:

"Some day soon I'll stop being afraid. Jouane is teaching me magic. He says I'm real good."

Conversations[edit]

During the twelve long hours of bullying, Britte and Sissel may stop and have the following conversations:

"Leave me alone!"
Britte: "You're going to get it, Sissel!"
Sissel: "Why? What did I do?"
Britte: "I told you to weed the garden by sunset, and you didn't do it. Now you're in big trouble!"
Sissel: "Papa told you to do that, not me! Now leave me alone!"
Britte: "Look at you! You're as filthy as a pig in a pen!"
Sissel: "I am not! You're lying!"
Britte: "You smell like a pig's pen, too. What a stink! Have you been rolling in the dirt all day?"
Sissel: "You're a liar! I won't listen to you. Leave me alone!"

When she visits Jouane at dinnertime, they can be heard having these conversations:

"Oh! Are you going to teach me how to turn into a mud crab?"
Sissel: "Jouane?"
Jouane Manette: "Yes, child?"
Sissel: "I was just wondering. The next time we meet, do you think maybe you could teach me some fire magic? Nothing dangerous! Maybe a candle lighting spell?"
Jouane Manette: "By the Eight, keep your voice down! Do you want the entire village to learn our secrets?"
Sissel: "Oh! I'm... I'm sorry. I didn't mean to upset you."
Jouane Manette: "Shh shh. It's fine, child. It's fine. But we must be cautious, hmm? What we do, the things I teach you. The others wouldn't understand."
Sissel: "I understand. I'm sorry. I just get so excited thinking about it. So... can we. Do some fire magic?"
Jouane Manette: "Hmph. Most certainly not. But perhaps I can teach you how to put some candles out. We'll start there."
Sissel: "Oooh, wonderful! I can't wait!"
Jouane Manette: "Today I'll teach you a useful spell that might just save your life. If you should ever fall into a river, you'll be very glad you learned it."
Sissel: "Oh! Are you going to teach me how to turn into a mud crab?"
Jouane Manette: "Oh, it's much better than that. I will teach you how to breathe underwater, with no need to turn into one of those ugly creatures."
Sissel: "Wow! Then I could dive into a river and swim so far away that Britte and father could never find me."
Jouane Manette: "Now, clear your mind and breathe deeply. Good concentration is very important for spellcasting."

Notes[edit]

  • Her line regarding a kindly gray dragon is most likely a reference to Paarthurnax.
