Sapphire demands Shadr pay his debts

Quick Walkthrough

1. Observe the conversation between Sapphire and Shadr.
2. Speak with Shadr.
3. Speak with Sapphire and either pay or persuade her to clear the debt.
4. Return to Shadr.

Detailed Walkthrough

Upon your initial entry to Riften, a conversation will take place between Sapphire, a member of the Thieves Guild, and Shadr. She is berating him for not paying his debt, to which he replies that he couldn't because his shipment was attacked. Sapphire alludes to the fact that she was behind it but doesn't forgive his debt and demands he pays it. She then walks off towards The Bee and Barb.

Shadr sits down on the bench and when you talk to him you hear a rehash of the situation along with his helplessness. You may then offer to assist him, which consists of simply walking to Sapphire and either persuading her to clear the debt or paying it. You then return to Shadr who is grateful and gives you a leveled potion of invisibility. This will increase Shadr's disposition towards you, meaning that you can freely take many items at Riften Stables, including being able to borrow a horse—differences between owned horses and borrowed horses are detailed on the horses article.

Alternatively, when you talk to Sapphire she will offer to cut you in on the deal, and give you a reward of 500 gold. If you accept the deal, you still need to return to Shadr to complete the quest.

If you have already been made Guildmaster of the Thieves Guild, Sapphire will recognize you as her boss now and apologize about Shadr's debt. She will also claim that she was going to talk with Delvin about cutting the Guild into the deal. You can either tell her to forget about the debt or split the money.

Notes

• Shadr may later be found in the Riften Stables.

Bugs

• Sapphire may not talk to you during this quest.
  • Simply opening up the console and using the command resetquest freeformriften22 followed by setstage freeformriften22 10 re-enables the quest trigger dialogue with Shadr. Simply don't reject helping him (as it triggers the bug) and just talk to Sapphire as usual and the quest will proceed as normal.
  • If the previous suggestion does not fix it, and/or if Shadr will not talk to you, you can try another method. Use the commands addfac 19809 1 and setrelationshiprank player 4 on Sapphire, and then speak to her wearing an Amulet of Mara. If Shadr will not speak to him, use the console to kill (kill) him and resurrect (resurrect 1) him, and you will be able to complete the quest.^{[verification needed]}

Notes

• Any text displayed in angle brackets (e.g., <Alias=LocationHold>) is dynamically set by the Radiant Quest system, and will be filled in with the appropriate word(s) when seen in game.
• Not all Journal Entries may appear in your journal; which entries appear and which entries do not depends on the manner in which the quest is done.
• Stages are not always in order of progress. This is usually the case with quests that have multiple possible outcomes or quests where certain tasks may be done in any order. Some stages may therefore repeat objectives seen in other stages.
• If an entry is marked as "Finishes Quest" it means the quest disappears from the Active Quest list, but you may still receive new entries for that quest.
• On the PC, it is possible to use the console to advance through the quest by entering setstage FreeformRiften22 stage, where stage is the number of the stage you wish to complete. It is not possible to un-complete (i.e. go back) quest stages, but it is possible to clear all stages of the quest using resetquest FreeformRiften22.
