Takes-In-Light, an Argonian sorceress, is a former college mage who is encountered as a ghost multiple times within Labyrinthian, as impressions of past conversations with the Arch-Mage during The Staff of Magnus. She is seen together with the ghosts of Savos Aren, Atmah, Elvali Veren, Hafnar Ice-Fist and Girduin.

She wears blue mage robes and a pair of boots. She carries a single red apple.

Labyrinthian, where secrets will be revealed

During the quest The Staff of Magnus you will find that, as a student in the College, Savos Aren led a party of five other students on an exploration to the ancient ruins of Labyrinthian, in the hope of finding rewards hidden in the ruins. However, they underestimated the dangers the ruins held, the exploration went awry, and the students began to die one by one, leaving Aren as the sole survivor. As you approach the entrance to Labyrinthian, you will encounter the ghosts of the expedition, Savos Aren included, talking about what they think will be an easy exploration. Besides Savos, the party contains the now deceased mages Atmah, Girduin, Takes-In-Light, Hafnar Ice-Fist, and Elvali Veren. Near the entrance, the ghosts will have this conversation:

Savos Aren: "Come on, we're finally here! Let's not waste any more time!"
Takes-In-Light: "Are we truly sure this is a good idea?"
Atmah: "We'll be back at the College before anyone even knows we're gone."
Girduin: "You would care about that, since you're the Arch-Mage's favorite!"
Savos Aren: "Don't forget, this whole idea was Atmah's to begin with."
Hafnar Ice-Fist: "Let's just get inside, see what's in there."

All the apprentices are obviously very excited, unaware of what they will encounter inside Labyrinthian. As you progress through the ruin, you will see the ghosts on several occasions, although it becomes clear that they are in way over their head as the group gets smaller and smaller. In the very first chamber, you will witness the group preparing themselves:

"I can't believe we're doing this."
Elvali Veren: "I can't believe we're doing this."
Savos Aren: "Can you imagine the looks on their faces when we come back?"
Hafnar Ice-Fist: "You keep talking like you're sure we'll find something useful in here."
Girduin: "Given the history of this place, it's more than likely there's still some amount of power here."
Savos Aren: "Enchanted weapons, tomes of ancient knowledge, Shalidor's secrets themselves -- who knows what we could find!"
Takes-In-Light: "And what if... What if there are things guarding this place?"
Atmah: "Against six College-trained mages? I think we'll be fine."

However, the group obviously encountered the skeletal dragon. In the next chamber, they will reflect on how to deal with the loss of Girduin and the fact that they can't escape Labyrinthian:

Elvali Veren: "We... we have to go back. We can't leave Girduin..."
Hafnar Ice-Fist: "We barely made it out alive, and you want to go back in?"
Atmah: "It's too late. There isn't enough of him left to go back in after."
Takes-In-Light: "Gods, what have we done?"
Savos Aren: "We can't go back. Might as well go forward. We can still do this."
Atmah: "Savos is right. We can make it if we just stay alert."

You will encounter the ghosts again near the end of Labyrinthian Thoroughfare, with another party member dead:

Takes-In-Light: "Just another minute, please."
Savos Aren: "Come on, we can't stop now. We have to keep moving!"
Atmah: "Where's Elvali? She was right behind me."
Hafnar Ice-Fist: "Dead. Something grabbed her from behind. Gone before I could do anything."
Takes-In-Light: "This is insanity. We never should've come here."
Atmah: "You're right. This is all my fault. Should we turn around, head back?"
Hafnar Ice-Fist: "I don't think going back is a good idea."
Savos Aren: "Going back would be the end of all of us. We keep pushing forward, and we'll make it. We will!"
Atmah: "Come on, you can make it. Let's go."

Just before the entrance to the final chamber of the ruin, the ghosts will appear again, this time without Takes-In-Light and all seemingly in acceptance that this will be their demise:

Atmah: "We shouldn't have left her there to die!"
Savos: "What else could we do? Stay there and die with her? She refused to go on, we didn't have a choice!"
Hafnar: "This is it, you know. Through this door. Can you feel it?"
Atmah: "We're not going to make it, are we?"
Hafnar: "We stay together, no matter what. Agreed?"
Atmah: "I'll be right with you."
Savos: "Agreed. We all stay together."

Notes[edit]

  • Unused dialogue exists that provides a full recollection of Savos Aren's version of events during the expedition. At some point, he would have commented on Light's death, saying "There were only three of us left. Takes-In-Light just sat down and gave up, and we left her there to die. I've no idea what killed her, but I'm sure something did. Atmah cried to herself. Hafnar wouldn't look at either of us. And I kept telling them it would be all right. I was in charge now. I pushed them on, insisting it would be worse to try and go back. What happened after was my fault. All mine."
  • While the mages don't have any dialogue when present at the entrance to Labyrinthian, they were meant to take part in another group scene;
Savos: "Come on, we're finally here! Let's not waste any more time!"
Light: "Are we truly sure this is a good idea?"
Atmah: "We'll be back at the College before anyone even knows we're gone."
Girduin: "You would care about that, since you're the Arch-Mage's favorite!"
Savos: "Don't forget, this whole idea was Atmah's to begin with."
Hafnar: "Let's just get inside, see what's in there."
