[edit] Radiant Options
This is a radiant quest; however, unlike the other thane quests, you can only receive it from Vignar Gray-Mane, and only if he is Jarl of Whiterun. If Balgruuf is the jarl, you can only become Thane of Whiterun by completing Dragon Rising.
[edit] Quick Walkthrough
In order for Vignar to be jarl, you have to have completed Battle for Whiterun for the Stormcloaks. Completing this quest befriends him automatically.
- Assist the people of the hold.
- Purchase Breezehome.
- Return to the jarl for your reward.
[edit] Detailed Walkthrough
This is an umbrella quest for several other quests that must be completed if you wish to become Thane of Whiterun.
The reward, the Blade of Whiterun, is a random, leveled, enchanted blade. There is a 50% chance that it will be a sword (one-handed), and a 50% chance it will be a greatsword (two-handed). Lydia is made available to you as a housecarl, but since it is impossible to complete the Battle for Whiterun without having already completed Dragon Rising, when Lydia is first made a housecarl, this is redundant.
There is a very high chance that you will already have completed the assist Whiterun citizens requirement for this quest. However, it is possible to complete Battle for Whiterun without befriending five people. [verification needed — see talk page]
