The Ratway

The Ratway is a network of sewer tunnels running beneath Riften, and home to the Thieves Guild. There are three zones to The Ratway, namely The Ratway, The Ratway Vaults, and The Ratway Warrens. The entrance to the sewer is below The Scorched Hammer, and the nearest stairs down to the lower level of Riften are beside Honorhall Orphanage. The sewers can also be accessed through The Ragged Flagon, after joining the Thieves Guild. The Ratway is used by non members of The Thieves Guild to access The Ragged Flagon.

[edit] Notes

  • The Ratway, the Ratway Vaults, and The Ragged Flagon never respawn. However, the Ratway Warrens respawn on a standard ten day schedule.
  • During A Cornered Rat the only NPC that remains in The Ratway Vaults is the Nord who is alive, all the others are gone while a few Thalmor are added, the locations of which are on the quest page.
  • There are three shadowmarks found here:
    • A "Guild" shadowmark is on the left side of the ground before the gated door to The Ragged Flagon. It's marked for being the headquarters of the Thieves Guild.
    • A "Loot" shadowmark is above the chest in the northwest room of The Ratway Vaults.
    • A "Danger" shadowmark can be seen after going through Riftweald Manor and before dropping down into The Ratway Vaults.

[edit] Zone 1: The Ratway

A map of The Ratway

At the bottom of the steps from the main entrance there is a woodcutter's axe, next there are two side sections, and in the left-hand one is a hanging moss plant through the grate in the floor. At the end of the tunnel there are two shady characters discussing their decision to move into the ratway and harass anyone looking past. You can walk (or sneak) past them during their initial scene, kill them, or attempt to persuade them into letting you pass. Just past them is a square room with a bedroll. Past this you can see a raised bridge, the lever to lower the bridge is on the other side and it is not possible to get to it directly. You must drop down to the stone floor, there is a skeever walking about here. There is an expert-locked grated door to the left that leads up to the room outside The Ragged Flagon.

If you cannot pick the lock, or wish to acquire a unique item, then move through the doorway into the tunnel to the right. The first door is booby-trapped, there is a locked tension cable attached to the bottom right of the door that activates a spear trap from the left. The next room has an oil slick, just beside the door is another woodcutter's axe, and iron boots. Through the door straight ahead is a sparse room with one garlic on the shelves. The path continues south, through the door awaits Gian the Fist; he has a very high detection level, making it nearly impossible to sneak up to him. He sits at the far side of the room, beside his bedroll, just inside the door there are five bear traps. There is a cooking pot to the right of the room, and an alchemy lab in an alcove to the left.

The next room has nothing of value. On the third step from the top of the stairs, on the left-hand side, is a pressure plate that activates a battering ram from behind you. Through the locked grated door is a small garden with an executioner's block. There are two hanging moss, an iron battleaxe, and insects can also be found fluttering around the room. Continuing through the next tunnel you will come upon the Lowlife, and on the table a copy of the Pickpocket skill book Beggar. There are two tunnels to the north, the left-hand tunnel leads to the bridge at the start and the associated lever, and the right-hand one leads to the expert-locked grated door. The door to the east leads to the Ragged Flagon.

[edit] Zone 2: The Ratway Vaults

A map of The Ratway Vaults

The only way to get to the vaults is through The Ragged Flagon—the door is to the right of the bar. The door opens to a large three-floored room with the path heading to the left, around the room, and into a tunnel. There is a tripwire across the tunnel where the short tunnel opens up into a room which activates two swinging maces from the ceiling straight ahead. In the left-hand corner of the room is a bed with a dead Nord and three skeevers nearby. Down the next tunnel to the left is a brazier, a chair, and a leveled battleaxe. Above the brazier is a garlic braid and some dried frost mirriam.

Following the path around the pillar and the next corner, there are two alcoves to the left. The second alcove has no floor and an oil lantern that can be knocked down onto an oil slick. There is a Vagrant patrolling along the path from here to the next room. Completing the circle and continuing under the entrance, the next room has an anvil, a workbench, a chest in the dirt behind the anvil, and a set of random enchanted gauntlets on the workbench. The room after this is guarded by a Vagrant at the top of the steps and a Lowlife by the table. The table has three chairs, two small chests (one is apprentice-locked), four coin purses, and an enchanted axe, all on the table. There are also two shelves in this room with low value items, and a novice-locked chest to the right of them, with a "Loot" shadowmark above it that contains, amongst the other loot, Dravin's Bow.

After this, there is an overgrown corner section of the tunnel that contains a skeever. The tunnel eventually opens up to the first room again, this time on the bottom floor, the gate through the bars is to the left, and an oil slick is on the ground. If you turn to the right immediately after going through the gate and move to the wall, you will find a leveled Illusion potion.

[edit] Zone 3: The Ratway Warrens

A map of The Ratway Warrens

The Warrens is located at the bottom of the Vault, and consists of only some living quarters. Just to the right when you enter is an apprentice-locked grated door which you can pick open, or otherwise walk the short distance around the corner to the open entrance. Near the grated door on the first floor is an apprentice-locked door, which leads to Hefid the Deaf's room; a more accurate description would be a cell as the room is extremely small with nothing in it. The room at the bottom of the stairs is Salvianus' room, at the far end of which is a table with an Imperial Officer's Helmet, an enchanted dagger, and two potions on it, and a chest underneath.

The unlocked grated door belongs to Knjakr, a mad chef. He will attempt to entice you into his room by offering to eat you. There is a grindstone and a random piece of meat in the room. Entering either Hefid's or Knjakr's room will result in them becoming hostile. Further on there is another grated door that reveals a usable bed, and next to the door a short tunnel reveals a hole to Salvianus' room. At the end of the path is Esbern's room, which is extremely well protected from anyone looking to access it. The room is very well stocked and decorated, certainly out of place for such a place as The Ratway. It contains a bed, a desk, a cooking pot, a leveled enchanted dagger, three leveled potions, a flower basket, and some uncommon books including Children of the Sky and The Wolf Queen, v6. There is also the One-handed skill book Fire and Darkness in the room.
