Vilod

Vilod is a Nord warrior living in Helgen at the beginning of the game. He is not encountered again after the tutorial, likely having perished in Alduin's attack.

He wears hide armor and hide boots, and wields an iron dagger.

Unbound

During the carriage ride at the beginning of the game, Ralof will speak of Helgen and mention Vilod: "I wonder if Vilod is still making that mead with juniper berries mixed in." He is present at the execution, although hidden from view. He can be heard shouting as a Stormcloak rebel is beheaded:

"Justice!"

You will encounter him again while Hadvar is escorting you to the keep. He is seen wounded and sitting down near General Tullius. If you approach, he can be heard making a dying request:

Vilod: "Tell my family I fought bravely."

Imperial Soldier: "The wounds are deep, Vilod! I can't stop the blood."

This is the last you see of him.

Notes

• Five bottles of mead with juniper berry may be found in the second story of Helgen Homestead, the house that you jump into during the dragon attack.
• As the publican of Helgen Homestead he has the same dialogue in relation to learning magic as other publicans. If you had been able to ask him where to learn more about magic, he would have responded with "That'd be the College in Winterhold. I suppose you'll be headed there, then. Well, don't let me get in your way."

Bugs

• Sometimes, after Helgen has been destroyed, Vilod can be found wandering around instead of being wounded. This can happen if Helgen is immediately returned to after escaping; he will be walking around near the headman's corpse and the chopping block. You can ask Vilod about learning magic at this time, and receive the quest to visit the College.
  • The Unofficial Skyrim Patch, version 1.3.3, fixes this bug.
