Question[edit]

Is this tower/dragon quest related, as the entry in the Bugs section Seems to suggest? I killed the dragon and received a quest update saying "talk to Esbern" And when I returned to him I had a dialogue option stating that I had killed the dragon at Autumnwatch tower, despite not Having any related quest marker previously. Can anyone clarify/ add relevant information to the page? — Unsigned comment by 86.142.188.145 (talk) at 21:56 on 18 January 2012

I killed the dragon here for a bounty, but the site was already "cleared" and when I killed the dragon, it didn't burn up for me to absorb its soul. I haven't seen whether other dragons are also doing this yet. What happened? — Unsigned comment by 74.207.50.245 (talk) at 06:10 on 29 February 2012
86.142.188.145: That quest starts with whatever dragon you happen to kill, regardless of the significance of it. It could be wanted for a bounty. It could be involved in a quest. It could even just be a random dragon. Either way, the quest can trigger.
72.207.50.245: This is a known issue. I think it's a glitch, but it may be intentional. Basically, any dragon you've killed before will not give you a soul. ?• JATalk 06:21, 29 February 2012 (UTC)

I have the originally reported "bug" with this dragon. I've killed many, many dragons, but when I killed THIS one (which happened to be a Revered Dragon for me), I got the misc. quest item "Return to Esbern" when I had never received any dragonslaying quest from Esbern. Since Esbern is currently not talking to me because I won't kill Paarthunax, I can't confirm the second part of the report. But there definitely is something odd about this dragon. ~FiveCentFather (Ken N.) (talk) 08:24, 13 March 2013 (GMT)

Bandits instead of a Dragon[edit]

Four bandits rather than a dragon at this word wall (one bandit chief). Same loot except for boots of lifting rather than sneaking. I was able to learn the word strangely enough, but of course, without a dragon I won't be able to unlock it. Bleak Falls Barrow hasn't been done, but I don't recall anything like this in previous runs when i skipped the main quest line. Might be related to my other bug. Heading over to Riften now for the Lost Tongue Overlook to see what's up there.98.198.118.224 07:21, 28 March 2012 (UTC)

Have you started the Dragon Rising quest? Dragons do not begin to spawn in this type of location until after a certain point in that quest. (I believe you have to kill Mirmulnir in order for them to begin to spawn randomly, but I could be wrong on that detail.) ABCface 07:29, 28 March 2012 (UTC)
Yeah, definitely missed the note on Dragon Lairs. Now I just feel dumb.98.198.118.224 07:36, 28 March 2012 (UTC)
You should not feel dumb at all. This game is extremely detailed and complex, so there are all sorts of variables involved in everything you do. That's why UESP exists, to help players find the info they seek. :) ABCface 07:42, 28 March 2012 (UTC)
If it is true that four bandits will be located here if Dragon Rising has not been completed I believe that should be added to the page. Another note, as the above guy listed a difference in the enchantment of the Hide Boots located on the tower, I would like to mention that I received a different enchantment as well. I believe the enchantment is random and whether the boots will always be of Hide quality my differ. The "Hide Boots of Resist Fire" comment will be changed accordingly. moved bug note[edit]

I have removed the following bug note from the page:

On PC Sometimes, the dragon will fly around in another place in the mountain aimlessly and - from Autumnwatch tower - it is very difficult to hit the dragon. Eventually, without even killing the dragon, the quest will be completed, and you can report back in. Later, you can get the quest again and when you return to kill the dragon, it will fly around like normal at first. After a minute or two though, it will go through the animation of a dragon after it is killed (burning into a skeleton and you absorb the dragon soul) but the dragon will still be able to fly around and damage you. However, you cannot damage the dragon at this time. There doesn't seem to be a cheat or combination of cheats that will fix this. (See above note)

It does not specify which quest it's referencing (there are multiple possibilities), it sounds a bit like a one-off, and I'm not even sure which 'above note' it's referring to. If someone can clarify these issues and reword the note for writing quality, it may be re-added to the page, but for now, I think it's too unclear to be worth noting on the article.ABCface 17:04, 8 May 2012 (UTC)

New entry: I'm an player interested in sharing problems I've experienced, and I think I can shed some light on the anonymous "bug" post in this section.
I just had a situation on Xbox 360 version 1.9.31.0.8 where the dragon at Autumnwatch was listed as a miscellaneous kill quest. When I arrived at Autumnwatch, the quest marker was moving around, and since the dragon was covered by the quest marker I could not see the red blip. I eventually saw the dragon, with the quest icon following it, and was confused why it was only circling south of Autumnwatch. Eventually I landed a lightning bolt, which gave me a dragon health bar, and then I noticed it took damage whenever it landed out of my view to the south.
Turns out it was mostly focused on frost trolls located directly south of Autumnwatch, at the ruins leading to the entrance to Arcwind Point. Note that Arcwind Point is southWEST of Autumnwatch, but monsters still appear directly south of Autumnwatch because there are many ruins on the path east of Arcwind Point before you actually *reach* Arcwind Point. Being unfamiliar with the area, it took me a while to find the corpse (I tried heading west first, mistakenly, since that seemed to have a path on the in-game map). I found the snow trolls near the dragon corpse - that must have been what killed it.
So, bringing my experience to the anonymous vague bug post, I suspect that the bug poster had TWO dragons at Autumnwatch. The snow trolls killed one, he absorbed the soul (though admittedly, I don't know the range of soul absorption - possibly my hypothesis is wrong), and the second dragon attacked. The poster thought the second dragon was the first. Not a bug, just a weird circumstance.
Even if anyone thinks my story does not correlate to the original bug post from this section, I intend to add a note that dragons at Autumnwatch may be distracted by monsters on the other side of the cliff south of Autumnwatch. It seems to me that the right thing to do is to point out this possibility to other players. I'll also tell players how to reach the corpse, because other paths around the mountain are clipped off by the in-game world boundaries and I only found one way to get to the corpse. — Unsigned comment by 173.170.2.176 (talk) at 09:22 on 11 August 2013

Skill Book[edit]

The skill book does appear pre-dragons - I just checked on a new file. I'm guessing it's a bug if it doesn't show up, not related to progress or lack thereof in the MQ. 72.42.155.45 07:28, 12 October 2012 (GMT)

Unkillable Dragon[edit]

I just can't seem to kill this dragon since the last patch 1.9.31.0.8, every time I get it to less than 50% of it's health and force it to land, it lands on a perch and it just sits there like a statue doing nothing, I continue to attack it until it has no health left and then it just still sits there alive, it is only in the area of Autumnwatch Tower that this happens.

So are there any suggestions for getting around this? Wrath425 (talk) 22:28, 22 June 2014 (GMT)

Try using Dragonrend, it usually forces it to move off the perch. Silence is GoldenBreak the Silence 22:33, 22 June 2014 (GMT)
Thanks Silence is Golden, Dragonrend worked like a charm but I found another problem with more testing, the dragon will also forget about me and go behind the word wall to attack the undead at Arcwind Point making killing it with Dragonrend a bit more complicated unless I get it with the shout while it's sleeping or lure it away from the tower first.
Should something be put in the notes about this buggy dragon lair? Wrath425 (talk) 03:41, 27 June 2014 (GMT)
Nope, that's standard behavior and happens all the time at any location, even in the wilderness. It's annoying, sure, but not noteworthy. •WoahBro►talk 04:12, 27 June 2014 (GMT)
