Shield-Brothers[edit]

The impression I have gotten from a video I have seen leads me to believe that the Shields-Brothers are not a sub-faction, but simply a term used by Companions to describe other Companions. Aela the Huntress refers to the Companions as brothers and sisters, and uses the term when saying something to the effect of: "you'd make a good Shield-Brother". I'm going to change the article, but feel free to revert the edit. I just think that we're jumping ahead by calling it a sub-faction. --OblivionDuruza 10:16, 6 November 2011 (UTC)

From what I could gather, the Companions hunt in pairs. So during a Companion mission, where one of the factions members follow you for the quest, they become your shield-brother. In the same way, you become their shield-brother, for that particular hunt. Therefore, a shield-brother probably means a person who watches your back like a brother. -AnonymousSkyrimFan — Unsigned comment by 125.62.202.27 (talk) at 15:54 on 28 December 2011

Radiant AI[edit]

Somebody should rewrite the Companions page and make sure it's made obvious which quests are random generated (repeatable) by Radiant AI. It's kind of confusing as it is. — Unsigned comment by 187.67.227.156 (talk) at 06:21 on November 21, 2011

I agree. Maybe also put them into one quest chain, since some radiant quests are required to get the next "real" quest, which is unlike other guilds. -SV — Unsigned comment by 173.169.155.159 (talk) at 07:15 on 24 November 2011
Are the Silver Hand Radiant quests truly radiant? I've only experienced one of each, and only once. That's also why I was wondering how the Silver Hand had managed to gather all the Wuuthrad pieces, whilst I only found one. Perhpas just a mistake by Bethesda. Can't start Purity quest. Bugged/Glitch?[edit]

I've completed the main story, and completed all of the main Companion quests (cured Kodlak, got Wuuthrad, etc.). I am at the part where the "radiant" quests kick in (the repeatable ones), and neither Farkas or Vilkas will give me the Purity quest. Here's what the NPCs will and won't do:

Farkas: Has 1 option to follow you.

Vilkas: Has 2 options. One option he will give you another radiant quest, the other option he will follow you.

Other than that, I have tried to force start the quest through console commands, but that doesn't work either. I don't have a save file to reload to, but from what I have read from other sites, the bug usually doesn't go away with new characters, new files, and old saves. Source here: http://www.gamespot.com/the-elder-scrolls-v-skyrim/forum/messages/platform/pc?topic_id=m-1-61087942&pid=615805

At this point I guess I will just wait for the patch to come out and hope that it gets fixed. Really annoyed me though because I did about 15 of those repeatable quests thinking, "Maybe I haven't done enough of these quests yet, like the thieves guild master armor quest..." (99.136.224.214 02:17, 28 November 2011 (UTC))

The above is happening to me too. Farkas isn't giving any quests, and Vilkas keeps giving Dragon Seekers over and over and over again... Purity just isn't coming up. (Also, Skjor seems to have come back from the dead, and Eorlund has apparently ceased to exist. What the heck?) — Unsigned comment by 24.246.41.16 (talk) at 19:21 on December 2, 2011
i think i too may have ran into a bug or glitch, i am trying to get the totem quest but the only quests i get are the animal extermination and the rescue radiant quests, i have completed the main companion quests and i have not done either the purity or totem quest yet as i can't find a way to trigger them, i have done dozens of the companion's radiant quest but nothing happens so i reckon this is a bug, i should say though that i married Aela the huntress so there could be glitch caused by marrying her. 86.186.126.162 21:32, 29 November 2011 (UTC)
i have looked on the internet for solutions and done many companion radiant quests, i eventually tried the other wiki elderscrolls.wikia and they mention you must have a witches head in your inventory and the next time you speak to vilkas or his brother, they will say their mission is more personal and bingo, purity has started, i tried it out and it worked first time. 86.186.126.162 02:58, 30 November 2011 (UTC)
i encountered another bug, while i did manage to start the purity quest by doing what i said above with the witches head, vilkis will not follow me to the tomb, he will follow me to outside the companions HQ but will turn and go back in, also if you talk to him he either offers you a quest even though the purity one is active or when you ask him to follow you he will say that someone is already following you even though there isn't anyone, its a quest breaking bug i'm afraid, i am trying an old save to see if it will work this time but i ain't holding my breath. 109.154.178.15 14:40, 30 November 2011
I have exactly the same problem as above. Vilkas gives me the Purity quest, then follows me outside of Jorvasskar then turns to go back inside. At that point the quest drops out of my Journal. I don't want to stay a werewolf so if someone finds a solution please post it! Thanks!! — Unsigned comment by 86.26.225.126 (talk) at 14:18 on 16 March 2012
I had the same problems. To get the "Purity" test, you need at least one witch head in current carrying inventory. After I added it to my inventory, I got the quest from Vilkas. However, he never followed me and the quest turned gray in the "completed" section, even though it was neither completed nor failed. I think the issue is that I took Wuuthrad from the statue after curing Kodlak in the "Glory of the Dead" quest. You can't undo that; as the statue will no longer activate to replace Wuuthrad a second time, the flame into which the witch heads are tossed is rendered inactive, too. That's my best guess at what happened, anyway. 71.63.160.176 06:37, 30 January 2013 (GMT)CatSith013

Wolf Armor[edit]

I got the impression that after completing 'The Silver Hand' and a radiant quest from Aela, you're able to buy an entire set of Wolf Armor from Eolund. Has anyone else experienced this? — Unsigned comment by 94.208.42.39 (talk) at 12:41 on November 30, 2011

I believe I've been capable of buying that set since the very beginning of the game, without even joining the Companions. ZeNinjaHawk 02:34, 3 December 2011 (UTC)
I was able to purchase Wolf Armor from Eolund after completing 'The Silver Hand' when I went to speak to him for my free Skyforge weapon. I didn't check if I could buy it before hand. Baron 02:35, 16 January 2012 (UTC)

Talk To Companion's Leaders for New Jobs...[edit]

or something like that.

So I've completed the purity quests for the brothers, but now I constantly have quest arrows in the map and on the compass pointing to them, when I put the cursor over it, it says something like what's in the title. I've even done quests from each of them and still it remains. In the quests menu, I've deactivated and reactivated every quest and still these arrows remain.

Anyone else experience this or know how to fix it? — Unsigned comment by 67.142.178.20 (talk) at 19:54 on December 4, 2011

its not a glitch or bug to fixed, the radiant missions are infinite. Mr.Scryer. 15:02, 7 December 2011 (UTC)
This is missing "retrieval" (from aela).
Mine's bloody well bugged (aela didn't think to give me the quest BEFORE kodlak's funeral and going to the underforge, and now she won't speak to me!) and I can't find the ID to fix it with!

Hired Muscle questline break...[edit]

From what I have read here about this radiant quest, a random NPC is assigned for "intimidation". For me it was Atar, a Silverblood goon disrupting operations in a silver mine in Karthwasten. (Sanuarch sp.?) Unfortunately, I had previously been to Karthwasten and was insulted by said goon, resulting in his untimely death. It seems that his corpse had never disappeared and was assigned a quest tag. However, even though Farkas said not to kill him, the quest does not update with a fail, and Aela will not assign me a new task, nor cancel my current one. I have just joined the Companions, so this quest breaks the entire questline (I think), preventing me from accepting tasks from Vilkas. Thankfully I had a previous hard save, so I was able to load out, but I am not sure if this quest will be required later on for promotion. Is there a list somewhere of characters required for these radiant quests or is this just a random glitch?

Notable info regarding this break includes:

XBOX360 Lvl 52 Atar has been in Sovngarde for 75+ hours — Unsigned comment by 50.17.155.247 (talk) at 23:15 on December 21, 2011

UPDATE: Worked around this glitch by reloading a previous save, sacrificing 2 or 3 hours of gameplay. It seems that on my game, for whatever reason, the problem is Farkas himself. After loading my save, I spoke to him again, accepted another quest, (not Hired Muscle, can't remember what it was called) and was told to go and rescue the annoying priest from the Shrine of Talos in Whiterun he had been kidnapped etc., etc., etc. Exiting Jorvaskr, I was surprised to see said priest making excellent time up the street to his favorite spot, still tagged as my quest marker, but refusing to speak with me. Farkas was again clueless, so reload again. Next quest I was able to achieve my objective, but upon re-entering Jorvaskr to turn it in, Farkas was nowhere to be found, and even though I had a permanent quest marker on my compass, I was unable to locate it on my World Map. Reload again and this time spoke to Aela the Huntress, following her quests all the way through to the end, finishing Glory of the Dead with no bugs whatsoever. Bottom line here is Companion's quests are very buggy, best to get them out of the way early, and make sure you save often! — Unsigned comment by 174.62.190.114 (talk) at 04:58 on January 5, 2012

Companions are broken[edit]

I was nearing the end of the Glory of the Dead mission, and I had done the companions quest line many times through other playthroughs. I threw a witch head in the fire and killed the wolf, then I talked to Skjor. I backed out of the conversation in an attempt to make it go faster. He disappeared and the quest completed. I went over to Aela to tell her Skjor said I was the new leader, and she just acted like I had been the leader since forever and offered me radiant quests to kill silverhand leaders and steal silverhand plans, even though I had wiped them out in Purity of Revenge. I go back to the Wuthraad room expecting to see the rest of the Circle, but they had already left for Jorrvaskr, again as if they forgot why they came there in the first place. The problem now is, I can't cure my Lycanthropy, since I can't select the fire again until I've successfully talked to Skjor, who is long gone. I can't start the totem quests because Aela will only assign Silverhand-related quests, Vilkas assigns Jailbreak missions instead of Dragon Hunting, and Farkas doesnt do what he's supposed to either. Farkas just came to me for a purity quest, I don't know if that will fix things, what I'm really worried about are the totems. If I have to redo a whole day's worth of work to fix this, I am going to freaking murder everyone in Jorrvaskr.— Unsigned comment by 99.7.127.57 (talk) at 11:10 on 23 December 2011

_ I had some problems with curing my own lyanthropy. When you talk to someone who wants the cure it starts with doing a job, but thats intereuppted with the "i want a cure' text. Then, if you do cure someone (have several witchheads in inventotry), try to cure yourself after. If that doesnt work, wait a day, try again. go back to Jar and ask someone else if they want help, on my second cure for a member, i was able to cure myself after. — Unsigned comment by 67.164.33.239 (talk) at 00:53 on January 25, 2012

For people who can't get past the hired muscle quest on console because the target it already dead.[edit]

I don't know if this would work for the other hired muscle quests but with the quest with Farkas where you have to intimidate Orgnar in Riverwood I killed Hiemskr in Whiterun and it allowed me to go on with the quest line. --74.71.103.93 07:05, 11 January 2012 (UTC)Pensilac

This is not a bug if you don`t cure your own lycantrophy right after you cure kodlak you need to wait until you cure both farkas and vilkas and btw i think you mean kodlak instead of "Skjor" — Unsigned comment by 77.166.160.62 (talk) on 5 May 2012

I been stealing 15000+ gold from you, Farkas?[edit]

So I'm going through the companions' base, and I decide to steal some nice little coins. Apparently their little house maid saw me and freaked out, and Farkas immediately knew about it like he has x ray vision. So every time i go to the companions and try to do something he repeatedly informs me that I've been "Taking things that don't belong" to me, and demands 1,000 gold for the ~50 that i stole.

So I was getting pretty tired of this, and I just gave him the money and got ready to do some companionating. Then Farkas's mug turns back around and asks for yet another 1,000 gold and I give him some more of the Au. Bout 5 minutes later I'm in the hole about 20k gold, and this jackhammer wants more...

The point is, Farkas is bugged out and wants infinite gold. As I am one of the many people who cannot divide by 0, this feat is impossible. Any fix?

(P.S.: I have NO bounty) — Unsigned comment by 71.187.156.27 (talk) at 00:28 on January 28, 2012

have you tried getting a bounty and paying it off? perhaps farkas is stuck thinking you have crimegold :/ another option would be to reload a prior save, or to kill the housekeeper since she was your witness. She could be stuck in an alarm state triggering farkas to want gold from you. — Unsigned comment by 123.211.114.207 (talk) at 11:28 on 29 February 2012(UTC)

Quest Giver dies, breaks questline[edit]

I recieved a radiant quest from Vilkas to retrieve a family heirloom and chose him as a follower after completing the companions main quest. he died causing the quest to fail, however Aela and Farkas still think the quest is active and will not give me new quests untill i complete the job for Vilkas which is no longer possible. an older save file wasnt available, so i tried curing my lycanthropy to see if that would initiate a quest to cure farkas but it did not. — Unsigned comment by Rjbroadfoot (talkcontribs) at 03:45 on 25 February 2012

Possible to complete the questline without becoming a werewolf?[edit]

Magic as a Companion[edit]

I just did the sparring session with Vilkas and he said that the Companions don't use magic. Now is that just for that fight or is that for the whole quest line? Vilkas won't give any quests[edit]

I would like to do "Purity" for Vilkas, but he won't give any quests at all. I was once able to start it but I didn't want to do it then so I just pressed tab to cancel the converstaion. Cannot even start the radiant quests![edit]

I have looked all over the internet and I cannot find someone who is in the exact same situation I am in. I have finished all of the main quests for The Companions and currently have a miscellaneous quest to seek work from the Companion leaders. The quest marker only brings me to Farkas, however, he only has the dialogue option to follow you. I have gone to every city and cleared any bounties and have used various console commands to try and fix the problem, but to no success. And again, I have not done a single quest for any of the other leaders since I finished Glory of the Dead. If anyone has had this problem or can think of a solution, please help. I would really like to complete the purity quests. If it helps to find a solution, the quests ID is CompanionsRadiantMiscObjective. The quest has only a Stage 0 and it is set to 1 (setting it to 0 only makes the marker disappear). Bulldogcadet 01:48, 9 May 2012 (UTC)

I got the same problem, no one wants to give me any radiant quests for some reason. Though I have Blood's honor active (no idea if that makes difference), I'll try to complete it and check those radiants then again.88.193.108.117 21:16, 24 May 2012 (UTC)
You can only have one Companions quest active at a time, so having Blood's Honor active would be the reason you can't take a second job. This wouldn't help Bulldogcadet's situation, but completing that quest should allow you (the above user) to take a job from one of the other leaders. ABCface 14:27, 26 May 2012 (UTC)

I too had the same problem and searched for answers but failed miserably. To clarify my situation, I completed some radiant quests then the Companion Leaders' dialogue for work no longer appeared. I played around with a couple of commands and then finally I used the command "setstage cr08 200" (which is to complete a random rescue mission) even though I did not have any radiant quests at that moment. However, it worked and the quest was completed because I saw "quest completed" and also it said "talk to the companion leaders for work" which I did and the dialogue option for more radiant quests appeared. Bulldogcadet if you haven't tried this command, I strongly recommend doing it. I hope this information helps and works for you as it did for me.

This solved my problem. Thank you so much. "setstage cr08 200" is what I needed to do to solve the glitch on my pc. This probably needs to go to the main page as a bug-resolution --Adabar (talk) 00:25, 30 November 2014 (GMT)

All 3 Silver Hand side quests[edit]

Is it possible to do Stealing Plans, Striking the Heart, AND Retrieval? From what I've seen doing only two (and it's always Stealing Plans then Striking in all files I've made, never gotten Retrieval) will have Kodlak giving you Blood's Honor and Aela going back to giving regular Companion odd jobs.

There is a bug with these quests, everytime I complete two, I get no more quests from anyone else, no one has found a way fix it yet, at least not for consoles. 217.137.157.197 00:28, 13 July 2012 (UTC)

No its not possible to do all three after two Blood's Honor starts. My last playthrough I got 2 Retrieval quests but right now I just hit the bug :( I'm gonna reload to see if it will fix that --SPMcKinneyTCE 06:19, 25 July 2012 (UTC)
Hmm ok well for me at least I found a way to "get around" the bug, I'm not sure if its the same for everyone but I tested it multiple times and it only worked the one way.
Before I turned the quest in to Aela I went and talked to Farkas, he had the option fot the player to say "..." and he replied "You fight well, Sister". After that I asked him for work and he gave the you already have work speach, then I turned the quest into Aela and she had the option for more work (which starts Blood's Honor).
I don't know if its the same for everyone but it seemed to work for me. --SPMcKinneyTCE 06:52, 25 July 2012 (UTC)

Aela, Vilkas, Farkas, GONE!?[edit]

i completed purifying kodlaks spirit, and i travel back to Whiterun, and they are gone. Try checking your map in places other than Whiterun. They can be encountered in the wilderness fighting various creatures after that quest is completed. If you have that objective active (and no others), it should be easier to find them by looking for the various map markers. ABCface 18:24, 28 July 2012 (UTC)
I had the same problem. I reloded my last save. I ask Farkas for a job before leaving the tomb and I had Aela follow me. I then completed the side quest Farkas gave which gave me a marker where he was. He was on his way back from the tomb outside of white run. It took him about 3 days and his brother 4 days before they got back to whiterun. After that they stayed in their normal locations. How are you trying to open the pages? Are you clicking on the links in the article, using the search box on the left sidebar, or typing it in the address bar of your browser? I've purged all three pages in case there was a problem with any of them, but clicking the links should definitely work, and using the searchbox will work if nothing is misspelled, while the capitalization needs to be correct for using the address bar to work. ABCface 14:25, 27 August 2012 (UTC)
Thank you. I tried all three of those things including different links from other pages but I was getting a pop-up asking me to download the page and then it wouldn't open the page in any programme. Only Aela 'Animal Extinction' quests available.[edit]

Each time I've completed an 'Animal Extinction' quest for Aela I receive the message "Talk to one of the leaders" and find they have all available quest markers as I expect they're supposed to have, but when I approach them I get no conversation opportunity and has to go back to Alea, who's the only companion who assign me with new quests, quests which are always the same type: 'Animal Extinction'.

I did become a werewolf and did some of the companions quests - I remember mainly the first one where I and Aela took out a group of Silverhands - but turned vampire when I downloaded the Dawnguard DLC. From that point on I've had the issue described above. - It really seems the Companions quest line is seriously bugged, so I think it would be a good idea if we could gather some reliable info and add it to the article. I'll keep an eye out for confirmations of the bugs described in this discussion and for possible console commands that will help solve them, as this quest line is obviously one of the more central and important ones to a lot of players. Might be worth mentioning: random fighting else in skyrim[edit]

Hi, might this be worth noted and/or verified? Once when i was in the hold The Rift i saw two or three companions (at least Skjor was with it) fighting a dragon. This might be a fun fact, because The Rift is almost on the other side of Skyrim.

And also, the companions (at least Aela outside of Jorvasskr in the yard) have theire own responses when stealing things. WeeziMonkey (talk) 16:51, 15 February 2013 (GMT)

It's already mentioned here, but I agree that it might be worth adding to the page. Elakyn (talk) 19:24, 15 February 2013 (GMT)

Isn't it worth noting that as Harbringer you are not technically the leader as there have been no leaders since Ysgramor? Your opinion is respected but you don't necessarily lead them, do you? JackTurbo95 (talk) 14:25, 7 March 2013 (GMT)

Which Quests are "Companions" quests?[edit]

(PS3 user) Does anyone know which of the Companions "radiant" quests count toward the "Companions Quests" tally in the player's journal? I'm asking because, at the end of the Companions main questline, the tally in my character's journal read "7" completed quests (even though only six are listed as part of the "primary quests" on the Companions page). But after recently re-acquiring lycanthropy from Aela (thanks to Dawnguard), my character began to finish off all the previously unobtained radiant quests. As a result, these were completed: 3 Totems of Hircine, 2 Purity, 1 Dragon Seeking, 1 Trouble in Skyrim, 2 Animal Extermination, 1 Kidnapped, and 1 Hired Muscle. The grand total? "11" Companion Quests completed, according to the journal! Somehow, the previous total increased by four. But which four? Obviously, some of them were considered "miscellaneous" and some were considered "Companions Quests" so if someone could explain that math to me, I would appreciate it!MrC (talk) 18:37, 7 March 2013 (GMT)

Upon further reflection, I think they are all "Companions" quests . . . except they only count once. In other words, 3 Totems of Hircine equals 1 (type of) quest, 2 Purity equals 1 (type of) quest, and so on. Of the seven "types" completed, I had probably already received three of them in my earlier play-through, which was why the journal number only increased by 4. (**Additional Edit.) Except the math still doesn't seem to work <sigh>. Who knows? Maybe some quests are classified as "miscellaneous" or maybe it depends on the quest-giver. Maybe lycanthropy is considered. I don't know. I surrender. Construction set anyone?MrC (talk) 19:49, 10 January 2014 (GMT)

No followers for companions?[edit]

After completing Glory of the Dead, I spoke to alea, farkas and vilkas in the tomb of ysgramor, Alea says " common, lets go tell the others " like normal, however when I return to jorrvaskr, alea has no "im looking for work " options, and all of the companions excluding farkas and vilkas only say " hmmm? " and " need something? ", Also There are no " follow me " options on any of the members of the circle either, Did I get hit with like 3-4 bugs at the same time or what? — Unsigned comment by 24.63.171.231 (talk) at 12:59 on 13 March 2013

Vilkas Marriage Glitch[edit]

The entire time since he proposed he's been following me initiating conversation and I can't get him to stop. He does this as a follower and if he's standing around at home. I need help because I don't know what to do.66.229.231.54 17:29, 29 August 2013 (GMT)sammielle

You could try clearing any bounties you may have, as that does sometimes cause issues with him. Not sure of any other potential solutions. — ABCface 20:15, 29 August 2013 (GMT)

go to the companion leaders for work....[edit]

I talk to everyone with an arrow over their body but it isn't freaking working. Please help me ;-; I really want to be a werewolf and get this done, but it's not going away because no one will give me work. This is during the miscellaneous quest. One of the early beginnings

Can't Start Radiant Quests[edit]

I just started having this problem recently, as well. After I talked to Vilkas and started a Dragon Seekers quest, I exited Jorrvaskr, and suddenly Vilkas just turns around and goes right back in. I go in after him, and the only dialogue option he has is for training. The quest was still active though, but there was no marker, and the Show on Map button wasn't working. I had already discovered the location, though. So I traveled there, thinking that, surely, killing the dragon myself would finish the quest. I was wrong. So I used a console command to force complete the quest. Ever since then, I can't start any more radiant quests from any of the Companions. I've tried setstage cr08 200, but it didn't work. Any other suggestions? 75.75.17.239 00:01, 21 November 2015 (UTC)

Weird bounty glitch[edit]

I stole a plate from the companions and then 2 people attacked me grey mane and the drunk so i paid my bounty but they still keep attacking me I used calm on them and they acted like nothing happened then when calm wore off they attacked me again nothing i do will stop them what do i do

100% completion[edit]

With the unofficial patch installed a 100% completion of the Companions Guild quests seems simply impossible, and not just "more difficult".

You can only do 2 of the three silver hand radiant quests.

Killing Mikael and Talking to the Companions leaders for work[edit]

I had joined the companions and killed an animal for Aela. The next time I spoke to her, she told me to see Skjor, and Proving Honor started. So far, so good. I didn't take the Companions questline any further, but I was in Whiterun to work on Oblivion Walker. I stepped into the Bannered Mare to ask Hulda about rumors to start The Whispering Door, and Mikael was being his usual obnoxious, boasting self. Although I don't typically do stuff like that, I lost patience and sniped him with my bow. The instant Mikael died, the miscellaneous quest "Talk to the Companions leaders for work" was reactivated, but Proving Honor is still in my journal, and Skjor told me to talk to Farkas about retrieving a fragment of Wuuthrad, so Proving Honor appears to still be working. Given that someone else wrote on the talk page about clearing his hired muscle quest to intimidate Orgnar in Riverwood by killing Heimskr, I'm thinking that the game treats it as you failing a hired muscle job any time you kill someone who is a potential target for that side quest, even if that isn't your target and even if you aren't even on that side quest or any Companions side quest.
