Bug: Receiving the Quest[edit]

The quest is apparently not given if Maven Black-Briar has been made Jarl following the events of the Civil War in the Legions favor. This appears to block her acting out as a quest giver for this. In short, the quest was not given to me after Brynolf gave me the money and even after I asked what Maven wanted with me. — Unsigned comment by Cyrus Amell (talkcontribs) at 18:24 on 22 December 2011

Maven was the Jarl in my game and gave the quest without any complications. It may be important to mention that I did the whole skooma trafficers sidequest prior to this though. Perhaps that needs to be completed first. — Unsigned comment by 70.29.68.16 (talk) at 04:46 on 29 December 2011
I found this on gamefaqs.com: "If the player breaks into Honningbrew Meadery before being given the quest, the quest is never offered to the player after the completion of Loud and Clear."
So this is probably the cause. — Unsigned comment by 94.113.42.185 (talk) at 22:45 on 7 January 2012
I couldn't receive the quest either, but pre-civil war, middle of the main quest, and I've never broken into Honningbrew Meadery at all. So... — Unsigned comment by 24.18.232.136 (talk) at 07:04 on 24 January 2012

A solution to the bug[edit]

A not very fine solution to the bug, that the quest is not given, is to skip the quest via console by typing "setstage TG04 1"
For now i don't see a better sollution :-( --91.7.198.220 09:29, 26 December 2011 (UTC)

Can't you just set the stage to the start of the quest? — Unsigned comment by 70.29.68.16 (talk) at 04:46 on 29 December 2011‎
Apparently not. I tried "setstage TG03 1",10 and 20. The console gave me "GetInFaction >> 0.0" and the quest did not start.

You can simply make yourself a member of the Thieves Guild Faction using the console and then set the stage to 10. Also I had this bug even though I have Skyrim updated to version 1.9.32.0.8. — Unsigned comment by 94.219.96.63 (talk) at 18:46 on 11 January 2014‎
I had a similar issue where the quest wouldn't start even when asking what Maven wanted with me and without breaking into Honningbrew Meadery. Trying to start the quest via console commands didn't work.
I remembered killing Eimar (because lulz) and he's apparently related to the quest. Resurrecting him then setting the quest stage to 10 (via console commands) did the trick.
In order :
  • prid 000B2978 to select Eimar in the console
  • moveto player to teleport him (or what's left of him) to you (might be useless, but I did it)
  • resurrect to resurrect him
  • startquest TG03 to start the quest
  • setstage TG03 10 to set the quest step to "Speak to Maven-Black Briar"

This works! In my case, moveto player was not needed. Thank you so much! 180.66.25.24 12:13, 6 April 2020 (GMT)

Full payment[edit]

Walkthrough states payment is given upfront if you pass a speech challenge. However, on success NPC dialog states he will only the player half up-front. Anyone receive full payment up-front or is the walkthrough unclear? 75.80.97.155 03:16, 8 January 2012 (UTC)

I wrote this, and just made an assumption. I personally did not try to pass the persuade challenge. Thanks for the observation. For now, I'm going to update the page to reflect your experience. If someone else has a different one, it can be modified. --Jreynolds2Talk 11:53, 8 January 2012 (UTC)

question[edit]

concerning this

"the player breaks into Honningbrew Meadery before receiving this quest, it will not become available (even after installing the 1.4 patch) Loud and Clear"

is that before or after you install the patch? — Unsigned comment by 86.26.84.151 (talk) on 13 June 2012

Caius still involved[edit]

For me, even though Whiterun belongs to the Stormcloacks, Commander Caius is still the taste tester, but upon talking to him he WILL acknowledge that he's lost the fight. He says things like "I'll always be a commander, even if those Stormcloack dogs stripped away my power," and "The Legion will regain control of this city, mark my words." The boilery key[edit]

I thought it was kind of strange that when you first talk to Mallus and ask why you can't just go straight to the boilery, he says something to the effect of "go ahead if you can find a way in." However, it seems that the only key is in the boilery itself, as if Sabjorn somehow locked himself out (because I don't know why he would go through the tunnel from the boilery after locking the door, especially since Hamelyn would likely kill him).

Battle for Whiterun[edit]

I started this quest before battle of whiterun, and finished it afterwards. When I complete the poisoning and get to stage 70, Caius is there, attending to the tasting. However, once the barkeep offers him his special mead, he does nothing. I use console to complete the quest and advance in the storyline, as advised, and then Caius just leaves the meadery. But then, a wild Sinmir appears and walks in, and completes caius's part of the quest. Well, doesn't matter, got the quest completed 82.128.187.20 21:17, 8 March 2013 (GMT)

I had the exact same problem, but instead of advancing the quest manually, I used the alternate fix of spawning Sinmir and it worked perfectly, except that Sinmir walked out the door before I finished talking to Sabjorn, forcing me to use the command again. For the record, I tried several common fixes for script glitches, such as hitting Caius with Unrelenting Force, sprinting into him, using disable/enable, and resurrection, and none of those fixed the problem. --Xyzzy Talk 19:16, 9 March 2014 (GMT)
Just to clarify, I had started the Liberation of Skyrim after getting Dampened Spirits, and finished LoS before DS, just like the bug says. Also, I had DB installed when it occurred. --Xyzzy Talk 19:32, 9 March 2014 (GMT)

Status of Honningbrew Mead post-quest[edit]

It might be worth noting that Honningbrew Mead is no longer readily available after this quest.--149.160.118.51 00:17, 23 May 2013 (GMT)

Two barrels outside the boilery continue to respawn Honningbrew Mead after the quest. Furthermore, one of the barrels inside the meadery (first floor, through the first door, right-of-center standing upright among others) will read as either a Honningbrew Mead barrel or a Black-Briar Mead Barrel, depending on where one places the cursor, and will contain both types, though it has to be emptied separately.--149.160.118.51 23:53, 9 October 2013 (GMT)
The one inside is clearly due to a bug, as each of the other barrels in the area is actually two overlapping barrels (one Honningbrew and one Black-Briar), but only one is ever visible at a time. One that should have been removed after this quest was missed. Robin Hood  (talk) 19:08, 10 October 2013 (GMT)

Unimportant stuff[edit]

I just played through the mission and counted a total of 389 pilferable bottles of mead (this is a Thieves' Guild mission). I feel like that should be included someplace near the bottom, just for giggles. --DUc0N (talk) 00:16, 24 May 2013 (GMT)

Mead teleportation[edit]

Am I the only one wondering about how the mead I just poisoned is immediately available in the barrel used for the tasting? — Unsigned comment by 87.89.234.33 (talk) at 20:12 on 27 June 2020 (UTC)
