Exact order for bugfix[edit]

The bugfix by manually adding the perk doesn't work for me. When exactly do you have to add it? Before giving Esbern the bone and scale it doesn't work because you can't give him the things anymore, so there's no update. But after giving them to him and receiving the potion doesn't work either. I tried both adding the perk before and after drinking the potion and talking to Esbern afterwards - the quest is still uncompleted. --NeoDobby 02:37, 25 December 2011 (UTC)

I have added additional information, (and will sign up one day I promise). You must have the perk before you start this quest. The process is MEANT to be this:
  • 1) Kill a dragon, get quest "Talk to Esbern"
[You must add perk here, before talking to Esbern *atall*]
  • 2) Talk to Esbern, get task "Return dragon bone and scale"
  • 3) Return bone and scale, receive potion.
  • 4) Drink Potion.
  • 5) Esbern mentions something about this being good (and implies future upgrades)
You must add the perk between step 1 and 2. When you do this, steps 2 3 and 4 are completely skipped. (I don't think you even get the potion).
Luckily, I still had an autosave that let me test all the combinations. This is the only one that worked. — Unsigned comment by 115.64.167.220 (talk) at 10:45 on 26 December 2011
Thanks. Sadly, I don't have a save for that anymore. Setting the quest stage doesn't work either, because it isn't even listed in sqs. Guess I'll have to wait for a patch. --NeoDobby 11:02, 26 December 2011 (UTC)
Whats even weirder is that I was randomly killing dragons, and I get a message saying "return to esbern" I refused to do the blades favor (killing a certain dragon), so he just said "Please, Delphine is very worried about you" over and over again, even though he never gave me the research quest. --Xelgion

() I find another way to make the quest completed. You can use the console command SetObjectiveCompleted FreeFormSkyHavenTempleD 10 1 between step 2 and 3, then type player.addspell 000F5FFA to get the perk. Additionally, the console command sqo (ShowQuestObjectives) can help you list QuestObjectives. --mybaby520 14:20, 29 December 2011 (UTC)

What is the difference between a perk and a spell? I was expecting that one gets a new spell to cast, when player.addspell f5ffa however it showed up under permanent effects. Does the perk include this particular spell? Should one do both (add perk and spell) or only the perk? 94.222.95.52 20:27, 5 February 2012 (UTC)
Just to clarify: doing this method (which worked OK for me) also skips steps 3,4 and 5 as listed above. And the reward is actually a permanent perk that is listed in Active Effects, rather than a spell that can be cast...despite the code referring to it as otherwise.
  • 1) Kill a dragon, get quest "Talk to Esbern"
  • 2) Talk to Esbern, get task "Return dragon bone and scale"
type SetObjectiveCompleted FreeFormSkyHavenTempleD 10 1
type player.addspell 000F5FFA
Steps 3,4,5 are skipped and perk is added to Active Effects.ComaDivine 06:46, 9 February 2012 (UTC)
It's not a "must", yo can add the perk after step 2. I've done all combinations on my side, and I found out that the only thing one must pay attention to is to not give the scale and bone so as to get the potion : instead, use console commands addspell followed by SetObjectiveCompleted. --HawkFest 04:31, 22 February 2012 (UTC)

Question[edit]

When is this quest/what triggers it/etc, so it can be avoided until it's fixed? --Debatra 08:50, 1 January 2012 (UTC)

Any idea what to do if Esbern sends me to kill a dragon I already killed? — Unsigned comment by 79.255.42.55 (talk) at 20:56 on 10 February 2012

How do I complete this??[edit]

How exactly am I supposed to finish this after finishing the quest, Alduin's Bane?? I decided not to kill the person the Blades want me to kill so wtf?? — Unsigned comment by 71.96.120.166 (talk) on January 4, 2012 02:01

You can't. The Blades will never speak to you again. 96.37.228.113 16:30, 27 January 2012 (UTC)
If you are playing on PC and don't want to kill anyone and keep everybody happy at the same time (spoiler below):

Use the console command setstage MQPaarthurnax 100
The quest will show as completed, nobody is dead and you can interact with the Blades once more. ComaDivine 06:53, 9 February 2012 (UTC)

Reward[edit]

The Reward for the quest is marked as bugged. Despite this, shouldn't the regular reward be mentioned there as well? --Velyanthe 02:22, 8 February 2012 (UTC)

Considering that takes up the entire section instead of the usual "Quest Giver, Location, etc" that's most likely intended in order to draw attention to that part of the page. I didn't write it like that though, so I'm only speculating. --Debatra 02:46, 8 February 2012 (UTC)

Remove journal entry[edit]

Is there any way to fix this bug after it's all been done? Obviously I played the game thinking there wouldn't be bugs like this, and ended up doing the whole quest before I realised there was a bug. I have no save games I can go back to, other than the save on character creation in Helgen.

I've added the perk and the rewards manually via the console, but all I want to do now is remove the journal entry. Is there a manual way of doing that, or any way to get round this once its been done? — Unsigned comment by Mikjall (talkcontribs) at 14:36 on 12 February 2012

To remove the journal entry, what I did was use the console commands "ResetQuest FreeFormSkyHavenTempleD", "SetStage FreeFormSkyHavenTempleD 10", and "SetObjectiveCompleted FreeFormSkyHavenTempleD 10 1". 71.193.5.220 16:53, 21 February 2012 (UTC)

Removing Journal Entry[edit]

The four commands detailed above for context #3 (After you have given Esbern the Gragon Scale and Dragon Bone, and drunk the Potion) do actually work. - The Quest resets itself (you get the original quest request to bring the items to Esbern again) - The Potion is added (but not to your inventory) - The quest completes and is removed from your journal entries. — Unsigned comment by Robobrams (talkcontribs) on March 15, 2012

On 1.6 and still experiencing issues[edit]

I'm on 360 running 1.6 and Dawnguard but I'm still having issues with this quest. I recruited three members and talked to Esbern. He send me out to kill a dragon w my new Blades and we did so. I returned and he congratulated me and said to talk to him when I had some bones & scales. I immediately got a pop up of "Completed: Bring Dragon...to Esbern" with "Talk to Esbern" right below. I did and he mentioned that you could use them to make a potion, blah, blah so I handed them over. I got the expected "Dragon Bone removed", "Dragon Scale removed", and then "Esbern's Potion added".

The new potion is in my inventory waiting for me. I use it and get the "drinking a potion" sound effect but noting shows up in my Active Effects. I check my Potions and it's gone, back to Active Effects, nothing. I pull up my quest and I still have "Bring a Dragon Bone...to Esbern" still at the top of my Misc Quests and it is selected like it's active but there is no arrow over Esbern's head.

I reloaded from my autosave from the Sky Haven courtyard and try again, exact same results. I don't want to turn in the bone and scale and not get a working potion for my efforts. Anyone else getting the same? If Bethesda fixes it AGAIN in another patch, what's the likelihood I could still get a working potion? Or is the effect really there, there just hidden?

Thanks. DP88 — Unsigned comment by Doompenguin88 (talkcontribs) at 02:43 on 18 July 2012

I am having the same problem on the PC with 1.6 (obviously no Dawnguard yet). Performance seems identical with 1.5. I was able to fix it using the console as per the bugs section for 1.5. Possible factors that might have prevented it from being fixed in my case are the save which is from before the patch and that Paarthurnax is still alive (the quest was almost complete and carried over despite the Blades' demands). Bug?[edit]

I haven't recruited any Blades, but got the quest by chance, I killed a dragon, and got straight to "return to Esbern" part. — Unsigned comment by 94.246.18.225 (talk) at 22:21 on July 24, 2012

Never got quest[edit]

Although I was able to do the quest, it didn't appear as it's own quest, but just an objective (it updated when transitioning stages) in the Miscellaneous section. And I DID recruit three Blades. However, like the regular quest, it never dissapeared. The last stage remained in the Miscellaneous category even after I completed it. I have 360. 174.252.36.194 21:11, 31 July 2012 (UTC)

Same results on PC here. - Vainamoinen-Talk-Stuff 06:36, 22 November 2012 (GMT)

Adding the perk : use addPERK instead of addSPELL[edit]

It is mentioned here and there that one must issue the following command into the console:

player.addspell F5FFA

However, to add the perk, the correct command line should be:

player.addPERK E6DF0

That's what I did and it works fine : I get a message that the Dragon Research Perk has been added, it permanently shows in the current attributes list (type "L" + last menu item), and more over it's a perk, not a spell. --HawkFest (talk) 21:46, 3 October 2012 (GMT)

I compared the two. The first one (addspell) acts the way the potion should - adding the effect as would happen were the potion to function properly (gives the message "Dragon Infusion added"). Your alternative (addperk) acts as the effect of the spell and the only message I saw was through the console "Adding Perk Dragon Research to <player> with rank 1". Both console messages for each of these indicates it is supposed to be a multirank ability. Both give the same perk on the active effects menu. One works through the quest as the potion you were to be given, one bypasses the quest and potion entirely. Which is better? Better is a value judgement. Both work equally effectively. I suppose both could be put on the page but since the result is identical... I see it only mentionable for the reason of thoroughness. - Vainamoinen-Talk-Stuff 06:28, 22 November 2012 (GMT)

addspell does NOT add the perk (check with hasperk), addperk adds both the perk and the effect. Also the misc quest can be removed with completeallobjectives

Moved Note[edit]

"The console command player.addspell 000F5FFA along with the SetObjectiveCompleted FreeFormSkyHavenTempleD 10 1 only work on certain patched or pre-patched games; the above commands will not remove it from a bugged game's Miscellaneous Quests list nor will the Dragon Infusion get removed if you have already patched with the most current "Unofficial Patch" v1.3.3b - (2013-07-23) which requires "Official Patch" 1.9.32.08 to be installed. A work around is to back up a save, uncheck the "Unofficial Patch" v1.3.3b .esp file from the "DATA FILES" tab in the Skyrim Launcher, load the save, ignore the warning (but do NOT do anything other then the console command for the fix with the patch turned off) follow steps 1-4 above (Dragon Infusion was still there on mine after resetting the stage, so I skipped step 3. May be due to something from the Unofficial Patch carried over into the original save?) and check if the bugged quest left your misc list, and make sure the Active Effect of the Dragon Infusion is present. Make a new save, quit, recheck the .esm for the Unofficial Patch, making sure it is in the correct load order right after any official expansion packs, but before any player mods. Start the game with the recent save and observe everything is OK and double-check the bugged quest is gone. Ideally, try to fix before adding the Unofficial Patch v1.3.3b. to save the extra work."

This is far too long-winded and poorly written, especially for a bug caused by a mod. —Legoless (talk) 15:55, 28 July 2013 (GMT)

Moved from Detailed Walkthrough[edit]

I was asked to "Ask Esbern about the Dragon Liars", but he was outside in the country side, and when I finally met him, there was nothing in the speech box to ask about Dragon Liars, hence he would just say to me "what do you want" or "hey". I SOLVED this error by going back to Skyhaven Temple and slept for about 14 hours. AND Esbern was now back in the Temple, I went up to him and I found in my speech box, "Ask about the Dragon Liars". This solved my problem and cleared the job from my listing.
I hope this solves it for other player's.

Bug info was added to Detailed Walkthrough section. Would also need cleanup if it is to be retained. I reverted the edit and moved the user's contribution here for possible review by an experienced editor, which I am not. 73.242.116.168 19:36, 11 June 2023 (UTC)
