Using shouts in town

Not sure if this is worth mentioning or not, but once I used Whirlwind Sprint all the way from Breezehome to Dragonsreach because I was over-encumbered (I wanted to use the Arcane Enchanter on a large number of items), so I was using the shout whenever I could and crawling the rest of the time, and as usual, NPCs all around me comment on the fact that I'm using shouts, and by the time I got inside Dragonsreach, I must have used the shout once too many, because a guard came to talk to me saying that the shouting made the villagers nervous, and that I should stop, and I agreed. Does anyone know what happens if you don't oblige the guard's request? Does he try to arrest you? — Unsigned comment by Gimee (talkcontribs) at 18:31 on December 22, 2011

Just tested it. They just keep telling you to stop. They don't attack you or lock you up or anything, so there are no consequences. Lucien LachanceDB 01:35, 29 December 2011 (UTC)
nothing happen, even if you agree to stop shouting and suddendly repeat Whirwind Sprint(or other non-offensive shouts) in front of them. You can also quit the conversation with "circle" (on ps3) during the guard advise. — Unsigned comment by Isonade (talkcontribs) at 22:45 on January 7, 2012
I've found if I don't shout near people they don't speak to me about it thus enabling you to shout in towns with impunity (despite the lack of any real repurcussions).Sulhir 09:07, 16 January 2012 (UTC)
I use shouts in town a lot (because you get a letter hinting at locations of word walls). The guards come up to me because of this. Guards in whiterun let me be even when i talk tough. However, guards in falkreath aren;t so wimpy. they went ahead and attacked me after i refused to stop (conversation option). I'm not sure about other towns. MArkarth guards i think will attack me as well. but havent really tested it in all the towns yet. ForsakenOne 14:10, 4 March 2012 (UTC)
Guards from any location will simply come up to you and ask you to stop shouting. There are no cities where they will attack you for using a non-offensive shout, even if you continually shout for hours. If you were attacked then you may have had a bounty or used a shout that damaged an innocent NPC. The G00D Job 05:24, 11 May 2012 (UTC)

how to add unavailable shouts via console command(if possible and if doesn't damage game)

and what is the id for the dummy spell? — Unsigned comment by 24.38.223.147 (talk) at 18:57 on February 27, 2012

Shouts (or words, I'm not certain) can be added via the teachword console command. The shout ID is underneath the shout name in the chart on this page, and the individual word IDs are located on the actual shout pages along with the shout IDs. For example, the ID for Animal Allegiance is 0005fc77, with the words being 00060291, 00060292, and 00060293. --Velyanthe 00:30, 28 February 2012 (UTC)
Thanks :)
Sorry, my question was unclear I mean but how do i use these?
ex for animal allegiance do i type teachword 0005fc77 or teachword 00060291 teachword 00060292 teachword 00060293?
and the one for the target dummy isn't listed(it just says the player can console command it in)
and how would it work for the unavailable ones listed on the talk page like meteor storm that all share the same 3 words?

but thanks for ansering :) — Unsigned comment by 155.43.160.22 (talk) at 18:50 on March 1, 2012
Try it out with teachword 0005fc77 to begin with. If that doesn't work, try the next three in order and that should work.
As for the words on the talk page, those are specific, dragon-only shouts. I do not think that you can add them to yourself, but if you could, it would be through the same methods. The words used in those dragon-only shouts have IDs that are separate from the Dragonborn's shouts.
I'm unsure about what target dummy you are talking about. --Velyanthe 00:00, 2 March 2012 (UTC)

() thanks :) — Unsigned comment by 24.38.223.147 (talk) at 06:44 on March 2, 2012

The IDs for the target dummy shout are 0002f2cc, 0002f2cd and 0002f2ce, you will need dragon souls to unlock it

Broken Word Walls Can Be Fixed

"Sometimes, the word will not appear on the wall, leaving you unable to learn the entire shout. There does not appear to be a fix for this; even loading from a previous save will not cause the word to appear. You will hear the background music/chanting, and the sound that plays when you learn a word will play and some of the associated visual effects may even be present, but you will not learn the word. The chanting/background music will continue to play every time you visit the site. "

This is true but I have figured out something. The Word Wall at Merida's Shrine didn't work but I kept coming back to hope it will and about the 12th time I came back, I gotten the word thus it fixed on its own. This was on Xbox 360 and felt like saying dis. — Unsigned comment by 172.130.223.249 (talk) at 01:50 on 29 February 2012

I'll try this! I'm having the same problem at Meridia's Shrine! but I'm in ps3, so let's hope it works there too. Audrey Gally talk 19:52, 19 October 2012 (GMT)
HALLELUJAH, praise the lord and also jesus because IT WORKED!! XD XD XD, it worked for me the 6th time! also, two dragons appeared at the same time, one of them just dropped dead and the other one just flew away... wut? But the good thing, IT WORKED!! Audrey Gally talk 01:22, 24 October 2012 (GMT)

Decreasing Shout CD time / Unlimited Dragon Shout

As far as I know there are only two ways to decrease shout CD: 1. Blessing of Talos(20%) 2. Amulet of Talos(20%). And they both are effected by various enhancements, such as: 1. Fortify Restoration from potions. 2. When the player is a vampire and under the restoration's perk "Necromage". So these provide the possibility to create 0 sec CD. For example:

1. With only Amulet of Talos a player needs a 400% Fortify Restoration Potion.( 20*(1+400%)=100 )

2. With both blessing and amulet of Talos a player needs a 150% Fortify Restoration Potion. ( (20+20)*(1+150%)=100 )

3. With both blessing and amulet of Talos a vampire+Necromage player needs a 80% Fortify Restoration Potion. ((20+20)*(1+25%)*(1+80%*(1+25%))=100)

So even if players don't have any skills from Alchemy/Enchanting, a player with vampire+Necromage state using a Elixir of the Healer (50% fortify restoration) will obtain about 81% decreasing CD. ((20+20)*(1+25%)*(1+50%*(1+25%))=81.25, by using console "player.GetActorValue ShoutRecoveryMult" get a number "0.19" in the game.) This would be interesting to those players who play solely based on Dragon Shout. (Thus DRAGON-BORN style. lol) Somone please rewrite this information to the dragon shout page. Thanks. 72.193.0.57 21:04, 7 March 2012 (UTC)

Marked for death note

"Some of the sound files do not match the words of some shouts. For example, the female Khajiit voicing for "Marked For Death" is only "Krii!" for the single tap version (one word) - the 3 word version comes out "Yun Lud Aus!" instead." This is incorrect, as I see in the CK, the subtitle and sound files of long Marked for death of all races are "Lun...Lun...Aus!", not just any particular race and definitely not "Yun Lud Aus". The single version is indeed Krii, though.117.5.242.177 13:39, 24 April 2012 (UTC)

Suggestions for Changes to Template

I don't know how to edit the {{Shout Entry}} templates, whether I have permission to do so, or even if I'm using the right terms to try to explain what I don't know to do. I suggest the following changes (or something like them) to the table on the page, if someone wants to effect them or explain to me how to do it:

Disarm:

Firebreath:

Marked for Death:

Slow Time:

Recharge time

What unit is the recharge time in? Real time seconds/minutes/hours or in-game time? 2.103.42.253 19:36, 10 May 2012 (UTC)

Real time. Otherwise, with the default time schedule used, your compass would clear almost, if not immediately. Vyc Ðarkshådøw 04:22, 22 June 2012 (UTC)

Unrelenting Force

Just thought I should add that when a male Khajiit uses full version of Unrelenting Force, for myself it only comes out as "Fus.....Ro!". Can anyone confirm or deny this? 24.222.66.30 10:47, 20 May 2012 (UTC)Hephaestus

I know that it comes out as Fus Ro when I use the first two words with MY male Khajiit, but I'm pretty sure when I use the full version it says three words. Granted, not necessarily the RIGHT words, but... ThuumofReason 11:47, 20 May 2012 (UTC)

Journal: Words of Power Unlocked

Started a new guy with Patch 1.5 installed. I was tired of being molested by random Dragons when I had better things to do so I did NOT complete Bleak Falls Barrow, thus preventing Dragon Rising from even starting.

At this point I have learned 24 Words of Power and have never absorbed a Dragon Soul (nor could I). Yet, the Journal shows Words of Power Unlocked as 3. And Shouts Unlocked as 1. The Shouts page for my character shows NO Words or Shouts unlocked. Go figure. Han 19:27, 20 May 2012 (UTC)

I was thinking of doing the same with my next character. I'll let you know my results. Robin Hoodtalk 20:36, 10 June 2012 (UTC)

Steam Breath ... A (Dragon?) Shout?

Does anyone know more about the steam breath attack referenced here? I'm wondering if it should be mentioned on this page if it is technically a shout. --JRTalk E-mail 02:23, 29 May 2012 (UTC)

It's a shout, which to my understanding is basically a spell that is A) equipped by the vocal cords (for lack of a proper name) and B) does not use Magicka. All I know is that it does 75 damage for 1 second - I don't know anything else about it, like what kind of damage it does, the recharge time, etc. My knowledge of the shout is very limited, but I'm fairly certain that it doesn't need to be mentioned on this page, regardless. • JATalk 02:39, 29 May 2012 (UTC)

Problem collecting Dragon Souls (PS3)

I've just started a new file after downloading patch 1.5 on PSN and have completed Dragon Rising, and have killed several dragons since, but it's like I'm not getting credit for killing them. I've collected the first words of Marked for Death, Slow Time, and Elemental Fury but when I try to unlock them I still get the message 'Dragon Souls are required to unlock Shouts' even though I'm up to five kills. And I walk up close enough to absorb the souls everytime. I played normally until I met the Greybeards and received Whirlwind Sprint but then started on the Dark Brotherhood questline. 24.254.147.246 23:19, 5 June 2012 (UTC)

Unlocking Shouts

The article says that R2 and RB are used for unlocking shouts when on PS3 it is actually Square and on X-Box, I believe it is X.--24.149.92.163 23:37, 9 June 2012 (UTC)

Magical Attacks?

Just wanted to find out for certain, but are damaging shouts still technically magic attacks? I know that resistance to fire works against fire breath etc., however do the general purpose magical defences such as Resist Magic and Spell Absorption affect shouts as well? It might be worth clarifying, as the in-game descriptions are confusing in this regard as magic is normally anything that uses magicka, but of course shouts do not. -- Haravikk 17:33, 10 June 2012 (UTC)

"Well, I only know what I've heard in the old tales. Shouting is an ancient form of magic - the use of one's voice to project their power."
"There's a tranquility in magic, don't you think? It is simply energy, to be harnessed by those with the will and knowledge to do so." (Farengar Secret-Fire)
Magic is not something that uses magicka, it is energy. Shouts are magic and thus are affected by Resist Magic and Spell Absorption.117.5.16.17 15:38, 14 June 2012 (UTC)
Higher-level ward spells can completely block/absorb an entire fire/frost shout from any dragon so the actual attack is magical. To be lore-friendly, I believe the Thu'um alters reality around it producing an effect identical to magic. It's a different way to access an identical result which is why it doesn't consume magicka. Shouts Training Magic Skills

I have noticed that after using Fire Breath I got a destruction level. I didn't have any spells equipped. As well Call Dragon has boosted my conjuration. Has anyone else noticed this? The concept is the first part of the truth. 14:48, 30 June 2012 (UTC)

"Dragonborn" and "Dragonblood" translation error

On the "Skyrim:Dragon_Shouts" page, in the first few lines Dovahkiin is translated to Dragonblood: "As the Dovahkiin (dragonblood), you were born with this power." Dovahkiin is actually translated to dragonborn, and "Dovah Sos" being dragonblood. I just thought I'd make this point, and hope that someone changes this. --AcE x EPiiCzZ 22:17, 7 July 2012 (UTC)

Unlocking Shouts

I'm confused. According to my journal, I have collected 20 dragon souls, and learned 15 words of power. However, only the original 2 shouts are unlocked. Am I missing a step? Is there something else I have to do in order to use the dragon souls for unlocking? — Unsigned comment by Barbridg (talkcontribs) at 23:34 on 11 July 2012

You need to unlock the shout with dragon souls. To unlock them simply hover over the shout you want to unlock and press Z on PC, X on xbox or Square on PS3. — Kimi the Elf (talk | contribs) 23:38, 11 July 2012 (UTC)
Thanks. I just figured it out. I interpreted the statement at 1st as meaning I had to hover over the word on the wall, but I now realize it means the word on your magic menu. Once I figured that out (duh) the rest made sense. However, the control for unlocking on the PC is R ( not z as the article says). Z is only the command for using. — Unsigned comment by Barbridg (talkcontribs) at 23:44 on 11 July 2012

Unlocking Dragon Shouts

I have three locked dragon shouts and four available dragon souls. While I was able to unlock the initial shout, I get the message that I need dragon souls to unlock the others. Do I have to complete the High Hrothgar quest or something to unlock any more shouts? — Unsigned comment by 93.182.148.133 (talk) at 02:00 on 15 July 2012

Any shouts taught to you by Skyrim's main quest are automatically learned - those you find on random Word Walls, however, you have to use Souls to unlock. Worth noting, however, that the shouts added by Dawnguard require souls - none are free. — Unsigned comment by Derejin (talkcontribs) at 02:13 on 15 July 2012
If you have the souls already, then you already have dragons in your game, so there shouldn't be any more quests you have to do in order to unlock shouts. What exactly did the message you got in-game say? ABCface 15:17, 22 July 2012 (UTC)
"Dragon souls are required to unlock shouts." Still can't unlock any shouts. I've unlocked shouts before in another game, not sure what this is. Edit: I did indeed have to start the High Hrothgar quest, I can now unlock shouts. — Unsigned comment by 108.85.57.180 (talk) at 17:59 on 31 July 2012
There has been some confusion on how to unlock shouts by some players, and the directions are open to misinterpretation.
Open the dragon shouts menu, and hover the mouse pointer over the shout you want to unlock. If you click on it, it will give the "You need dragon souls" message. Instead of clicking on it, press the appropriate button (R on PC, X on XBox, Square on PS3), while the pointer is over the shout. This should unlock the shout. --XyzzyTalk 05:20, 1 August 2012 (UTC)

Organization of Shouts

I would suggest that two tables be made. One for the shouts available in the main game. One for the shouts that become available with the DLC.

It would be helpful for those who do not have the dlc. — Unsigned comment by 24.131.37.66 (talk) at 08:07 on 21 July 2012

Dragon shout recharging glitch

All the dragon shouts I have are listed as having negative recharge times, eg the Unrelenting Force is over -1000 secs. This means I can shout continuously.

If you are playing on PC it is quite possible you are in god mode(which is only available on the PC) when in god mode, among other things, the cooldown time between shouts is reduced to zero. Shouts Governed by Skills

I feel like it's worth noting somewhere that some of the shouts are governed by skills, just like regular spells. Thing is, I don't know what the implications of this are, if there are any. Has anyone looked into that? For reference, here is a list of the shouts which are governed by skills:

  • Frost Breath - Governed by Destruction (only if using all 3 words)
  • Ice Form - Governed by Destruction
  • Slow Time - Governed by Alteration
  • Throw Voice - Governed by Alteration
  • Unrelenting Force - Governed by Destruction (only if using 2 or 3 words)
  • Whirlwind Sprint - Governed by Destruction
  • Phantom Form (the Greybeard shout) - Governed by Conjuration

Does anyone know what this means in terms of game-play? Shouts don't use Magicka, so skills won't reduce cost. Does the cooldown time between castings get reduced instead? Does a level 3 Frost Breath do more damage if your Destruction skill is higher? Is Whirlwind Sprint really affected by Destruction? Inquiring minds want to know. TheRealLurlock (talk) 14:21, 10 November 2012 (GMT)

I would have to disagree here, as my personal opinion has always been that Shouts are the warrior's spells, if one were to put it that way. I've never noticed any reduction in the cooldown period for Dragon Shouts, regardless of how adept one is in magic skills. --AcE x EPiiCzZ (talk) 23:03, 11 December 2012 (GMT)
Frost breath and Fire breath are affected by the Augmented flame and Augmented frost perks in the Destruction tree. You can witness the difference when shouting at a dragon, the shouts can only stagger it when you have at least the first rank of the perks, similar to when you dual cast a spell with Impact. There is no other shout affected by any skill tree.117.5.17.64 16:30, 13 December 2012 (GMT)
I would like to ask how is it exactly did you find out which shout is governed by skills, this most definitely needs more time investigated into this. For example if you say that "unrelenting force" is controlled by "destruction skill" then that means this could open up many different possiblities into how us players can make each individual shout stronger naturally without having to result to console command or mods. 21:35, 23 January 2013 (GMT) — Unsigned comment by 31.124.33.203 (talk)
I would like to also know what skill school governs "Become Ethereal" Shout it would be intresting to see if the duration is extended somehow. 10:21, 26 January 2013 (GMT) — Unsigned comment by 31.121.30.213 (talk)
Kind of a necropost, but I'd really like to know whether any of these shouts are affected by skill/perks. Currently, there is a note on the Slow Time page stating it is affected by Stability, and unsubstantied reports that Frost and Fire Breath are affected by the Augmented destruction perks. --~The wind, forsaken~ (talk) 21:34, 17 April 2013 (GMT)

Duplicate Shout Entries and Words.

I have noticed since adding the newest DLC and updates I have duplicate entries in my shout list. Drain Vitality is listed twice. One of them is the right one with the proper words listed and the other one is I believe Dismay with the words for Marked for Death. I have two words for each of them. Not sure when this happened as I have had the DLC installed for the last week or so after starting a new character. Anyone else noticed this on their game? I did have issues on another file with the Arcwind Point word radiant quest not clearing and took steps to clear it properly from the discussion on that particular bug. Could that have something to do with it? I am playing on the Xbox. Fenrir2606 (talk) 09:53, 11 December 2012 (GMT)

Yup, this is a well-known bug. It's already documented in Drain Vitality's Bugs section. I believe there was another shout where this occurred as well, but I don't remember which one it was off-hand. Robin Hoodtalk 10:14, 11 December 2012 (GMT)

I tried to do it but it didn't work because there was no information just this symbol: {{{words}}} - Chezburgar (talk) 19:24, 15 December 2012 (GMT)

The new Dragonborn shouts are at Skyrim:Dragon Shouts. Perhaps we should note that a little more prominently? It's in the first paragraph, but it doesn't exactly jump out at you if you're just casually browsing the page. Robin Hoodtalk 20:58, 15 December 2012 (GMT)
If the Dragonborn shouts is going to be somewhere else, then the Dawnguard shouts should be removed as well. The Same goes for the achievements. Or they could just be added here. I think that would be the best solution, and just tag it with a tiny DB to clarify that it is Dragonborn content. Jyggorath (talk) 23:14, 12 February 2013 (GMT)
From what I've come to understand, content from add-ons, such as Dragonborn or Shivering Isles, usually receives its own individual pages. Content from plug-ins, like Dawnguard and Hearthfire, are simply added to the category of the base game. --BlackhawkXIII (talk) 01:56, 13 February 2013 (GMT)
Though now that I look at it, all of the above-mentioned content is simply referred to as plug-ins on the wiki. Maybe the distinction is just that the ones like Dragonborn and Shivering Isles involve traveling to a completely new area whereas the ones like Dawnguard take place in Skyrim. Even if it isn't one of the things I've mentioned, I know there's a pretty good reason for there being separate game categories for certain plug-ins. --BlackhawkXIII (talk) 02:05, 13 February 2013 (GMT)
If the dlc packs must be devided into add-ons and plug-ins based on scale, then I would definitely count Dawnguard as an add-on, as it is clearly more equal to Dragonborn in scale than Hearthfire. But my original point is that I think that all the info on shouts should be in one place, OR it should ONLY be info from vanilla Skyrim on this page, and nothing from any dlc, regardless of them being add-ons or plug-ins. And in that case, we need better information on where to go to find shouts from the dlc packs. Jyggorath (talk) 14:41, 14 February 2013 (GMT)
Basically, The Dragonborn namespace means that the shouts have their own page in that namespace. Dawnguard and Hearthfire do not, because they did not add any significant landmass, as was added in Dragonborn, Bloodmoon, Tribunal, etc. There is a link to the dragonborn shouts at the top of list, which should be sufficient for anyone looking here for those shouts. Jeancey (talk) 19:25, 9 March 2013 (GMT)
So... the hidden valley is not a significant landmass...? Jyggorath (talk) 15:52, 11 March 2013 (GMT)

() No, it is not a significant landmass, in purely technical terms. The creation of the Hidden Valley reused many assets from Skyrim, whereas the creation of solstheim created many new assets. The best comparison is the Shivering Isles (ie, dragonborn) compared to Knights of the Nine (dawnguard). KotN added many areas and quests, but no significant new landmass, whereas SI added a large new playable area. Jeancey (talk) 15:58, 11 March 2013 (GMT)

Alright, I see your point. But it's still a little stupid and confusing to divide the shouts like this. Either all shouts from DLCs should be on their separate pages, or every shout should be on one page, DLC or not. Jyggorath (talk) 16:17, 13 March 2013 (GMT)
They are on their own pages, its just that dawnguards own page IS this one. That's how the namespaces work. If you want something about dragonborn, you use the Dragonborn: namespace. Trust me, it makes sense. This is just how it is done. Jeancey (talk) 16:20, 13 March 2013 (GMT)
It might be useful to separate the Dawnguard shouts into their own section, then add a Dragonborn section with those shouts transcluded (similar to the compromise that was reached regarding achievements). — ABCface 16:32, 13 March 2013 (GMT)

Rewriting the "Using Shouts" Section

I just spent a lot of time adding to and fixing up the section about using shouts. I carefully worded everything and tried to keep it concise but simply couldn't explain everything I did in the edit summary. I'd like to apologize to the person who made an edit literally right before I did though I'll be happy to explain why I didn't leave in some of your changes. I'm also planning on moving the section about how to control the power of the shout from the page introduction to this section. I think it makes sense when looking at other articles such as Combat.--BlackhawkXIII (talk) 19:14, 16 January 2013 (GMT)

I'm currently planning on moving the note about the Meditations with Paarthurnax into a new section about the numerous powers that can improve shouts (since there are now 6 when counting Dragonborn). Hopefully this will be a beneficial section to the article. --BlackhawkXIII (talk) 19:14, 16 January 2013 (GMT)
I'm not a shout expert, (or a page layout expert) but I feel comfortable commenting on the revisions from a language perspective: I think you worked wonders with your very clear, easy to read text. Why, thank you! I'm doing my best to make these sorts of edits wherever I can. It's certainly reassuring to hear that someone thinks I'm doing a decent job. --BlackhawkXIII (talk) 21:19, 17 January 2013 (GMT)

Race, gender and voices

Okay so, looking at the notes at the end of the page I noticed that there are still unresolved issues about the different voice types but even though there is a link to the talk page, there isn't any real discussion about it here. So let's start one, shall we?

  • First, the males: I can confirm that Altmer, Bosmer and Dunmer share the same voice as far as shouts go (and grunts too, actually). I only played with a Nord male but from what I know, the same goes for Bretons, Imperials, Nords and Redguards. Orcs and Khajiits both have their very own voice type and the discussion above suggests that Argonians use the Human voice for some reason.
  • For the females: Altmer, Bosmer, Dunmer, Bretons, Imperials, Nords and Redguards share the same voice which is a pretty weak move. I don't know about Orc, Khajiit and Argonian females so anyone with infos about it is welcome; I'd gladly create new characters to test all of this but I don't have a PC and honestly don't feel like playing 10 hours just for that.

Looking at all this, I find it odd that Bethesda bothered to record dozens of hours of dialogue and didn't put more effort into shouts. Are there unused files somewhere that they might have forgotten? Elakyn (talk) 16:50, 16 February 2013 (GMT)

DragonBorn shouts are missing

Someone needs to add all the dragonborn shouts

There is a Talk section already addressing this topic, please feel free to add your opinion to it. --BlackhawkXIII (talk) 17:36, 17 April 2013 (GMT)

listed as a bug

The dragon shouts page says the shout not getting used until after the bow has been sheathed/fired is a bug, but my experience says it may not be so. When i activate throw voice (only) with a drawn bow in sneak mode the "eye" turns red when the distance is to far for the shout to work. Verification needed though.

Also on xbox 360 using kinect commands it will use the most powerful form of a shout instead of the weakest HaldorTheSovereign (talk) 13:34, 23 April 2013 (GMT)
