Quest not appearing in Journal[edit]

I'm experiencing the bug in which this quest fails to appear in my journal. Does anyone know the codes for this quest, for a possible fix via the console? Ninepaw 11:36, 12 December 2011 (UTC)

Sorry I don't know the codes, but I had this problem, the on screen messages appear just fine and the quest completes successfully anyway. That's why I put some text on this page - so it would be easier to remember where to go :) Alonella 12:09, 12 December 2011 (UTC)
I did indeed complete the quest successfully, but should it contribute to the "Aid the people of Winterhold" requirement to become Thane? If so, then it hasn't worked for me, which is frustrating because I seem to be very short on needy citizens!Ninepaw 12:32, 12 December 2011 (UTC)
To be honest this is my first time through the game too, so I cannot honestly say for certain, but if you look at the Winterhold page there are four quests that can be done in Winterhold: A few words with you, Dungeon Delving, Some Light Theft and obviously, Drowned sorrows I had done all the other three before I approached the thane to give him his "hat" back and when I got the thane quest the screen immediately displayed 3/3 completed so I am assuming it had updated. The only other quest in Winterhold is to give money to a beggar but I'm not sure if that adds to the "thane count" or not. Sorry can't be more helpful. If someone will tell me how to look in the console for the quest codes I don't mind doing it Alonella 12:57, 12 December 2011 (UTC)
Thanks. Drowned Sorrows would have been my third good deed, which is why I know it hasn't worked. A quick Google search suggests a lot of people are struggling to fullfil the Thane requirements, no thanks to this quest, so I headed over to "Thane of Winterhold" and added some general guidance. But a fix for Drowned Sorrows would be nice. Ninepaw 13:45, 12 December 2011 (UTC)
Someone has said that the minor college quests also count, not sure if they're right or not, though logically the fact that you need to protect Winterhold in one of the mages' guild quests Containment that could contribute? I was the Archmage when I handed the helm back, so I had obviously done this quest too.
Have never yet needed to use the console (despite having discovered the Elder Scrolls when Daggerfall was first released) but if someone will explain how to do it will gladly look up anything you need... Alonella 15:16, 12 December 2011 (UTC)

() I played through the quest again, this time while using the console to keep track of it (sqs FreeformWinterholdC shows you what stage the quest is at, setstage FreeformWinterholdC <stage number> will move it on manually). For the record, the stages of the quest are as follows:

  • 0 – quest not active yet
  • 10 – talked to Dagur
  • 20 – talked to Vex
  • 30 – got Isabelle’s letter
  • 40 – handed letter to Ranmir

All the stages updated correctly. Moving them on manually did not change anything – I still get no messages, no journal entry and no points towards Thanehood. So the quest is not "broken" per se, but something is obviously wrong somewhere. Ninepaw 23:17, 12 December 2011 (UTC)

I suppose, logically, the next question is - how do we put this into the main article? It is useful info that really ought to be there...
But that does suggest the problem is in the thane quest itself the Thane of Winterhold page does list the stages for that quest - it may be worth manually changing those instead? Alonella 00:08, 13 December 2011 (UTC)
I was already Thane when I attempted to do this quest, and sure enough, the quest never appeared in my journal so I had to listen carefully to where the NPCs said to go. Never got an "update" in the quest log, nor did I get a quest completed when I finished it. However the quest went very smoothly aside from that. The quest NPCs had the correct dialogue and everything. (99.136.224.214 01:30, 16 December 2011 (UTC))
On my current playthrough I've already completed three tasks and have become thane of Winterhold, but this quest was never initiated. I think if you complete three of the four 'favors' that this one will not be offered. That's the only explanation I can come up with because I've seen it on another character. How to initiate from initial game state[edit]

Article states "When talking to people in Winterhold, a rumor can be overheard". Is this a random occurrence from any Winterhold NPC at any time? Or do you have to be at some point in one of the quest lines for this to occur?

Want to initiate this, but talking to Dagur isn't currently allowing any way to start. 173.64.10.54 03:44, 3 January 2012 (UTC)

Talk to everyone especially Ranmir's sister and Dagur's wife and don't forget Ranmir himself. Alonella 15:41, 3 January 2012 (UTC)

Figured it out. Spent a good hour on this stupid quest. The problem is with his sister's dialogue - the shopkeeper. She only seems to offer two conversations at a time when she should have three. Currently I can't buy from her, but I got the quest. Make sure, when you talk to her, to select the top option first. Then go to Haran. --Theothersteve7 01:21, 16 February 2012 (UTC)

I am also having trouble getting this quest to trigger. I've talked to everyone in town at least three times, and I tried talking to Brina when she was in her shop, and when she was in the inn. She generally says something about how useless her brother is when I approach her, but she doesn't have any dialogue option to talk about it. Neither do Haran or Dagur. Talking to the Jarl got me the quest to retrieve the helmet, so I did that. Then I became Thane because I already had 3/3 misc quests completed. Talked to everyone in Whiterun again and still no dialogue options to start this quest. At this point the only things I can think of that might be messing it up are that I got the coral claw from Brina and haven't used it yet, and I got a bounty quest from Dagur that isn't done. EmmBee 09:28, 28 February 2012 (UTC)
UPDATE: Did the dungeon with the claw, and the bounty. No change. Looks like I'm giving up on getting this one. EmmBee 04:53, 29 February 2012 (UTC)
Both times I have done this task, the dialog for it appeared from the bartender and only after I convinced Ranmir to pay his debts to the bar. If you haven't done that, it's worth a shot. Although neither time has the quest actually been listed as a quest in my log, and I never got any quest updates for it either. The absent reward is the icing on the bugged cake here. 71.178.115.32 07:22, 4 March 2012 (UTC)

prerequisites[edit]

Okay, so you need to do A Few Words with You first, to get this quest.

But do you need to be given the A Few Words with You quest by Haran specifically, or is it enough that you have completed A Few Words with You in general?

This isn't made clear - the only indication you even need A Few Words with You is that it is listed as "Prerequisite Quest: A Few Words with You". CapnZapp (talk) 10:27, 6 November 2012 (GMT)

It was noted in the first sentence of the detailed walkthrough that you can start it "after helping Haran getting Ranmir to pay his drinking debt" but you're right that it should be clearer in the quest header itself. I went ahead and added it there and made some other changes to clean up the page. Hope this helps. — ABCface 05:14, 3 December 2012 (GMT)
So, can you only get the quest if you've completed A Few Words with You appearing with Haran-Ranmir, not the other possible quest-givers? As in, you might never get the quest at all? — Unsigned comment by 90.215.167.131 (talk) at 13:45 on 10 September 2013
You can get the quest if you complete the prerequisites. Silence is GoldenBreak the Silence 01:23, 14 September 2013 (GMT)

Isabelle bug[edit]

When I went to Hob's Fall, Isabelle's body was missing. I tried using the third person mode to look around, thinking maybe it had spawned below the ground, to no avail. Dbbolton (talk) 22:07, 10 June 2013 (GMT)

Her body doesn't spawn until the quest is started, are you sure it actually started? Silence is GoldenBreak the Silence 00:48, 11 June 2013 (GMT)

Entire quest bugged/incomplete.[edit]

It is mentioned on the quest information page that once one hands ranmir the note, he then disappears from the game. I have a strong suspicion that this is in fact a bug due to some very good investigative work by a specific youtuber. I really hope i am not breaking any copyright here, but this is the video:

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=eJ66cYToHNk

The gist is, ranmir doesn't quite literally disappear. He becomes invisible and cannot be interacted with, but he is still present in the coding, as shown in the video where the guy can teleport to him and place ranmir in different geographical locations.

What is odd is when the player in the video sets ranmir to die, triggering a note about inheritance saying you inherited 90 septims (after tax) from ranmir. This implies the creator of this quest expected ranmir to die somehow. I don't really want to speculate on how though as things suddenly become quite depressing, but its almost certainly true ranmir is supposed to die.

Anyone reading this, feel free to try and confirm. I'm not sure if this is note worthy enough to be put in the notes or bugs section, but i thought it was quite interesting. — Unsigned comment by 95.149.119.142 (talk) at 23:18 on 17 July 2013

After watching the video, I think that inheritance note mentioned above resulted from the kill and resurrect command, as I have gotten inheritance note when Lydia died once. I'd like to think the creator of this quest want to suggest Ranmir finally realized and started his life again. — Unsigned comment by 172.218.166.125 (talk) at 23:52 on 10 August 2013
Note--Re: USKP 2.0.0 fix): Birna's dialogue after the end of Drowned Sorrows should change to mention (albiet vaguely) that Ranmir is gone but it doesn't due to bad condition checks. (Bug #13911) --Blackpete (talk) 02:11, 26 October 2013 (GMT)
I cannot complete the quest although Birna's dialogue has changed. When I move Ranmir to me he is invisible, not dead.. I've teleported corpses to me, that he ain't.--76.126.91.246 05:43, 18 July 2015 (UTC)

Is Vex the only NPC to give info on Isabelle's location?[edit]

This sentence about Vex in the article leads to questions:

"If you have completed Taking Care of Business, she will even talk to you, and you will have the option to ask her about Isabelle Rolaine."

Essentially, the sentence says that if you haven't completed Taking Care of Business, there's no point in heading to Riften and speaking to Vex because she won't speak to you. And if she won't speak to you, how else is the player supposed to find out about looking for Isabelle in Hob's Fall Cave?

I would like to think that the game isn't so poorly engineered that completing a simple neutral quest like this requires getting involved with a faction one may not wish to join. Surely, there must be another source of info on Isabelle's location. Evil-i (talk) 02:13, 15 August 2014 (GMT)

Well, the Notes section says you don't have to speak to Vex to advance the quest--you can just go straight to the cave to find Isabelle, so joining the Thieves Guild is technically not required to complete it. To answer your question, a quick search on CSList tells me that only Vex gives you her location. So if you're not in the Thieves Guild and you didn't know she was in Hob's Fall Cave you'd have to manually search for her. —<({QT>> 05:17, 15 August 2014 (GMT)
The quoted sentence from the article is incorrect. I just spoke to Vex and she provided the Isabelle Rolaine dialogue. I have not started the quest Taking Care of Business. The quest A Chance Arrangement is in my journal, at only stage 8. 73.65.56.235 16:24, 21 December 2022 (UTC)
