Equipment AI bug (bows)

I've noticed that at least several followers seem to prefer to use their own personal (non-inventory) hunting bow over at least some more powerful bows you might give them to use. So far the only way I've been able to get a follower to consistently use the bow I provided to them is to console remove the hunting bow SEVERAL TIMES until they stop equipping it. It took about 5 removed before it worked with aela, using the command (targetted on her) removeitem 10e2dd 1. — Unsigned comment by Sotanaht (talkcontribs) at 01:53 on 16 November 2011

I've noticed this too with both Erik and Uthgerd. Whenever I fast travel, they automatically equip the bow and use it, no matter what items they have in their inventory, until something gets in close enough to make them switch to melee. After that, if they see another ranged target, they'll usually use the better bow I think. I'd need to test it more to be sure though.--Volkrov 05:38, 16 November 2011 (UTC)
Scratch that, Uthgerd always seems to use her hunting bow for ranged targets, even after switching to melee once. Attempting to use removeitem 10e2dd 1 on her crashes my game.--Volkrov 07:49, 16 November 2011 (UTC)
I have also experienced this, both with the elf archer from the first town and the dark elf archer mercenary from Whiterun's Drunken Hunter. This only happens on higher quality bows (in my experience, elven or better), and they will use lower quality bows just fine. I have not found a way to force them to use the higher quality bows. 24.205.218.86 07:48, 16 November 2011 (UTC)
Temporary workaround for this: Give your follower the good bow you want him/her to use (Daedric Bow is not recognised by followers for some reason) and also give them and continue to supply them with Iron Arrows (it's their default projectile in their hidden quiver, but they only have 12 and will stop using any bow when they run out of it). As long as they have Iron Arrows in their inventory, they will keep using the good bows. Of course this is still a trade off and not working as intended as you can never make them use good grade bows+arrows together. 80.98.74.2 19:30, 22 November 2011 (UTC)Cruniac
If they get shot by better quality arrows, the arrow will be put into their inventory (same way if you shoot a mob with your arrows, some of them can be found on their corpse upon looting) and they will immediately switch back to their Hunter's Bow as long as the better quality arrow remains in their inventory. Also I noticed that they will never run out of arrows that got shot into their inventory by enemies. If you want them to use the good bow, you will have to manually remove the 1 piece of better quality arrow from their inventory between fights. 80.98.74.2 19:30, 22 November 2011 (UTC)Cruniac
I'm a pc player and I can confirm the above. Definitively bug with arrows. 188.83.102.223 06:31, 21 December 2011 (UTC) @22 December 6:29 2011 Portugal
The FollowerHuntingBow is a reward from a quest. (QUST)DialogueFollower. This is the only reference I have found to the FollowerHuntingBow (10e2dd) and the 12 FollowerIronArrow (10e2de) Changing the rewards in an ESP gives the NPC tradable bows and arrows. May solve the equipping of better items if the default bow is a Longbow. — Unsigned comment by 68.44.124.229 (talk) at 04:36 on 23 December 2011
To force your follower to use your given bow, you must use console command ~removeallitems~ on him/her. My character is level 45 and I have tested this each time I took a new follower and this seemed to be the only way to solve this bug. Be sure to get all the useful items from her before and do a quicksave. After this, he/she will behave and use the bow you want, also the arrows. Indeed, I have observed that they have an issue with the Draedric bow, which may be because of its weight, which cause a long draw time, making it a bit inefficient for quick shots. They dont have issues with the Ebony and Elven bows, once you removed their Hunting bow. - Cicattrix - 07:45, 31 December 2011

() For console-users that don't have the luxury of the in-game console, giving your follower a Forsworn Bow seems to be something of a workaround. It appears to be the only type of bow that totally overrides the default hunting bow in a companions choice of weaponry. It's certainly not the best bow in the game, but it's still a damn sight better, especially since it can be upgraded and enchanted. 86.190.50.250 21:43, 9 January 2012 (UTC)

Using "removeitem 10e2dd 1" only worked for about the second it took for the follower to equip another hunting bow, even if I repeated the procedure. However, "removeitem 10e2dd 99" seems to have fixed it permanently. 129.241.137.217 02:42, 8 February 2012 (UTC)
That is because your command means "take away 99 arrows". The follower only needs one arrow to shoot an endless amount of them. But when you removed ALL her arrows, she stopped using them. That doesn't mean her original equipment won't spawn back later, if you don't give her "better stuff" to use, though. 213.112.128.96 13:16, 27 February 2012 (UTC)

Do followers level with you?

If i'm level 4 , is my follower, or are some followers inherently higher level and skill? 71.202.180.235 08:26, 16 November 2011 (UTC)

I don't think followers level. I checked Lydia's skills on one playthrough after extended use and on another immediately after unlocking her and they were exactly the same. I forgot to check HP so that could possibly change but skills seem to be static. Also other than a few anomalies I cant quite account for yet it appears all followers have roughly the same skill levels (20-30 for trained skills).--Armstrong 10:10, 17 November 2011 (UTC)
No they do not level with you, they remain the same level they were when you discovered the area they are in. Lydia/Faendal will be the weakest companions, but if you wait until you've leveled to max and then hire some of the optional followers they will be scaled to whatever you are. A level 81 follower is possible, who can easily tank Giants/Dragons/Mammoth's. — Unsigned comment by 71.67.101.210 (talk) at 00:30 on 22 November 2011
- THIS IS WRONG, THE FOLLOWERS LEVEL WITH YOU. — Unsigned comment by Cicattrix (talkcontribs) at 12:55 on 31 December 2011
!!! No he was right, there is a console command to enable your follower to level with you!!! — Unsigned comment by 67.186.36.124 (talk) at 18:26 on March 15, 2012

() Haven't seen a follower with a levelcap above 50. Also the followers do level with you but their stats are frozen. At least for most of them ... there are exception. I still think its just a bug. --Lex 00:43, 22 November 2011 (UTC)

This really doesn't seem right... My character went to Riften around level 20 or so, and yet I have Mjoll fighting with me at level 47 on Master difficulty and being totally fine. Her gear is strong (Ebony compared to my Daedric, all legendary), but she doesn't seem to be doing as bad as I think she'd be doing if she was missing out on 27 levels. I'm not saying the no-leveling is completely wrong, but, it just seems weird, is all.--Lovless510 22:02, 26 November 2011 (UTC)
This statment makes no sense. If their skills are not changing then they are not leveling. Most of a followers skills stay fixed because they are not their primary skills. Primary skills do go up over time but it's rather buggy. When you use the getavinfo console command you can see their current skill level for a skill and their hardcap for that skill and at level 50 Lydia had reached some of her hardcaps like Blocking and Archery and Stamina, but not others like Health and One-Handed. Using the disable and enable console commands on her raised them to their hardcap numbers.--DagmarH 19:26, 3 February 2012 (UTC)

() I Just want to add some discussion from some testing that I have done with 4 follower in skyrim and it seem some follower have different level cap. The follower level was checked with level 38 character and before i check the level i have disable>enable them. And the result is lydia(lvl 38), Aela the Huntress(lvl 38), Njada Stonearm(lvl 25), Uthgerd the Unbroken (lvl 30).--Archd 16:29, 1 December 2011 (UTC)

Yeah, they do have different level caps; I've only looked at two, Lydia and Eola, who are capped at levels 50 and 30 respectively. Somewhat random level caps seem fairly common in Bethesda games, but I think it makes the characters more interesting... --Vometia 22:26, 1 December 2011 (UTC)
Lydia is my follower. I am at level 22. I just checked her, and she is at 22. I got her around level 10, so it looks like she has leveled with me. 173.162.62.105 17:06, 2 December 2011 (UTC)
yes. if you check it with getlevel, it will give you the same level as your level. Try check her health with getavinfo health and you will see her current health value and her reference base health value. the current value as far as i know never changed when you level up. the only way to change her current value is to remove her from party and using console "disable","enable" her to update her status.I usually take all her item first and add "removeallitems" before "disable" command to make sure that lyda don't get the current weight bug.
@vometia i don't think the level cap just random when we played, but based on their role in the game. e.g in companion guild the circle group all of them have same level as i am(i assume their level cap is 50) but the other companion have lower level then me(lvl 25 most of them). --Archd 10:02, 3 December 2011 (UTC)
"Random" was probably not the ideal word for me to choose! You are of course correct, my comment was mostly aimed at it not necessarily being that obvious to the player. --Vometia 17:04, 3 December 2011 (UTC)

() J'zargo is the only follower with no level cap (or a level cap of 81, whichever). Though even at that level he still just sits there and casts sparks, unfortunately. --94.195.212.248 16:02, 10 January 2012 (UTC)

My Lydia can drop a dragon with one shot while I am picking mushrooms. I feel like Terry Jones in The Meaning of Life... "Could you get that dear?" I have no idea what level she is but her armor has 9,000 damage so she will never die anymore unlike when I started the game... what a nightmare and what a steep learning curve. This is not a cheat. I don't know if it's a spoiler so I'll let your imagination fill in the blanks but leveling up for followers seems irrelevant. — Unsigned comment by Neiklot96 (talkcontribs) at 22:19 on 13 February 2012
I have no idea what level she is but her armor has 9,000 damage so she will never die anymore unlike when I started the game... what a nightmare and what a steep learning curve. However, the 17,000 damage bow I gave her and the 8700% destruction magic reduction ring I gave her do not seem to function correctly like when I use them on my character. — Unsigned comment by 50.121.17.199 (talk) at 03:06 on 14 February 2012

Pretty cool follower and thrall behaviors

Ive seen a vampire's thrall who had no weapon, go over to a table and pick one up then start using it in battle, all while my poor follower was being attacked.

Also I think Ive seen Lydia use things she found on corpses.

I've seen a follower be disarmed in a dragon mage battle, and by luck I ran into her weapon on the groun and it made a noise. It was an expensive Ebony greatsword I crafted, so I picked it up and gave it back to her. :D — Unsigned comment by 67.164.33.239 (talk) at 23:43 on 3 December 2011 (UTC)

I've found a glass sword in the ash pile of a reanimated corpse, which had been in an unlooted chest (noted prior to a reload). The corpse was reanimated in an earlier section of the dungeon, so had not had the chance to loot the item whilst alive. — Unsigned comment by 82.68.56.110 (talk) at 15:06 on 6 December 2011
I can confirm the pick part because I've seen it already, and it seems to happen with any NPC, not only followers. I was running some NPC battles, draugrs vs imperials and it happened that the imperial picked a weapon from the ground after having all of his weapons thrown away by the draugr. About the follower looting subject, I too suspect they loot bodies, I've never seen it happen but it happened to find weird stuff (besides arrows) with my follower that I don't remember giving them. — Unsigned comment by 201.41.77.154 (talk) at 14:59 on December 30, 2011
I've also tried to disarm using my shout in my follower to see if could be a work around for the bow bug for PS3 and XboX but no use, It won't disarm him even if he's an enemy, it's probably the only shout that won't affect him. — Unsigned comment by 201.41.77.154 (talk) at 13:21 on 10 January 2012
Had an epic Dead Thrall moment today, i had one Dead Thrall active and created another one who then after he got close to the first said; "That spell looks dangerous... keep your distance" aimed at the other :) Blashyrkh 17:19, 19 January 2012 (UTC)

Follower died?

Is there any chance that an injured follower (specifically Lydia) could die after being given the command to return home? I own Breezerun, and sent her home after a battle left her wounded. I gave her healing potions and cure disease potions, but she didn't seem to be using them. She limped away, presumably in the direction of Whiterun, but doesn't seem to have made it back. Is it possible it is just taking a REALLY long time for her to limp back to Whiterun, or should I assume she didn't make it? (When I issued the command, we were close to Morthal.) — Unsigned comment by 99.47.20.86 (talk) at 20:46 on 10 December 2011

A lot of followers take a long time to return home, keep in mind that they move at walking speed. Wait another few days and check again.RIM 20:49, 10 December 2011 (UTC)
I had a similar issue with Iona during the main quest. I used Shouts to bypass large areas of Alftand, crossed Blackreach, delivered the inscribed cube, delivered and read the scroll, saw the flashback, fought a dragon, and then fast-traveled to my house in Riften. All the while, Iona is absent. Turns out, she somehow died. That should be impossible, because I definitely didn't kill her. — Unsigned comment by 67.248.246.4 (talk) at 03:07 on 13 February 2012

Bug: "sleep in a bed" not working?

I married Aela and she moved in my house in Whiterun. But she refuses to use the bed, she doesnt sleep at all. I tried with "Follow me" and then give her the command to sleep in the bed, but she goes near the bed and than stands still. Its not essential cause i get nevertheless the lovers comfort bonus, but im curious if this should function properly? --Psychomc 11:46, 28 December 2011 (UTC)

She's a werewolf. Werewolves cannot sleep.72.174.34.113 09:56, 16 January 2012 (UTC)
Werewolves can sleep, they just don't don't get rseting bonuses. As for the question, I have noticed this with Lydia as well, probably just a minor glitch.RIM 10:11, 16 January 2012 (UTC)
I read somewhere that there is a "player bed" faction and unless the follower is in that faction they won't sleep in the bed. --Tiger8u2 04:19, 3 February 2012 (UTC)
This is true. I was able to get Lydia to sleep in the bed, but when I joined, she hopped right out. --FoobarMonkey — Unsigned comment by 75.140.38.194 (talk) at 23:35 on 1 March 2012

Follower Level Offset

I noticed that Roggi was Level 10 when I was Level 14 and did a few forced level advances to verify that he's scaling. Lydia on the other hand is on-level with me. The spreadsheet needs to include a level offset column. --Camenecium 17:21, 30 December 2011 (UTC)

I'm beginning to think this was a bug I introduced by using one of the no-level-cap mods after going back and checking his level before I made him a follower for the first time. Can somebody who uses him as a follower check his level? Camenecium 03:15, 31 December 2011 (UTC)
Not a mod problem; NPCs do have level offsets. Would really like to see that in the spreadsheet. Note that NPC Editor mod on Skyrim Nexus gives good (starting) stats for all characters; the current data seems a little random. Unfortunately, NPC Editor does not list level offset. 68.82.33.221 04:29, 5 January 2012 (UTC)
Now that the Creation Kit's out, there's now a Level Multiplier for NPCs. In Roggi's case, it's 0.75 with a level range of 6-20. So his level will be mine times 0.75 but no less than 6 and no more than 20. Spreadsheet needs to account for this. Camenecium 05:21, 8 February 2012 (UTC)
Could whoever owns the spreadsheet also please correct the spelling of Vorstag's name? It's missing the R.--68.73.194.252 19:05, 18 February 2012 (UTC) (Alessar)

Equipping a Follower

The problem is, taking all of a follower's default apparel/armor results in them getting a whole new set because the game considers them naked. Solution: leave at least one default item of apparel/armor on follower. Tested this on Lydia. Got her to follow me. Equipped her with better heavy armor than her steel getup. Dismissed her and stole all her steel armor but left her with her default shield. I then asked her to follow me again, took back the armor I gave her and was able to equip her with clothes, light armor, basic iron armor, whatever. The only thing I can't get her to equip is a light shield, just better heavy shields. So decide what default apparel you want to leave in their hidden inventory and take the rest so that you can replace them. Have yet to test what happens to Lydia's equipment when she's been dismissed for a while. I suspect she will either get all her default stuff back and be wearing that next time I see her, or she will be naked. I once stole an equipped pair of gloves off of a NPC, left them alone for a bit, and they had a new pair next time I saw them. Hope all this helps! Daedremor 07:52, 7 January 2012 (UTC)

Mine is almost similiar to you, just a bit differences, so I'm seeking help :). I want to replace their base armor with the same armor but custom enchanted and smith upgraded. In my case I let Kharjo join the Blades, so his default gear changes to Blades armor, sword and Blades Shield. Of course he'll equip any armors/equipments that better that his base gear, for example Dragonbane and a custom Dragonplate shield. However the next part is tricky. I want him to change to my own enchanted and upgraded to legendary Blades armor, not Daedric armor or anything else, but the problem is the vanilla Blades armor and my custom one has the same item ID, same as the rest parts (gloves, helmet..). Therefore he refuses to change to the new one, despite it's better. I try to remove all his armor by stealing the other parts and the console command removeitem for the armor (because I can't steal it, too heavy, bug or something, only 0% chance for my thief character with 100 skill and appropriated perks). Force him to equip new item by command equipitem if he's still stubborn. Of course I don't forget to leave his Blades Shield alone. But when I dismiss him, he'll be naked (refuse to equip his custom Blades armor again) and his base Blades gear seem to be restored eventually. It's really bad if I have to follow the procedure above everytime I test new candidate to join the Blades. I begin to think that followers will not equip your armor if it has the same Item ID like their default one, ignore any smith/enchant values. Anyone else get same trouble? 222.254.191.152 17:44, 8 January 2012 (UTC)
The situation is: followers will, unless following you, either wear their default clothing or nothing at all if it's not available. That must be the way it's scripted. I've had the same problem with Dark Brotherhood Initiate always remaining in her tan (ugly) lingerie because I took her default armor. Same idea with the Housecarl of Riften, Mjoll the Lioness, Lydia and every other follower. You just need to keep them with you. 70.114.63.215 12:55, 14 January 2012 (UTC)
If I remember correctly in some cases followers will still equip the better equipment even if they're dismissed. I used to give Alea the huntress better gears during Companion quest and she keep wearing them even not in my party. So either for the Blades or in your case, Dark Brotherhood Initiate, their default clothing are always faction dependence, and they always revert to their default faction equipment if dismissed. I hope there is a mod, if any, will be able to fix this. Foxdie 15:28, 17 January 2012 (UTC)
By example: Put a non-enchanted steel shield in the follower's inventory. In the console type: help "Steel Shield" 4. This will print a list of items that match that string; make note of the object ID that matches what you want to equip on the character (use page up & page down if the list is long). Within the console click on the follower, then type: equipitem 000019b4. If you want the follower to never unequip the item, try equipitem 000019b4 1 (http://www.creationkit.com/EquipItem). — Unsigned comment by 75.169.236.71 (talk) at 01:45 on 27 February 2012

Followers Enchantable Equipment

I did a test on what enchantments you can equip on a follower that will actually have an effect. I enchanted a series of rings with the enchantable effects and gave them to my follower (Kharjo) one at a time, then checked the effect\resistence\bonus value with GetAVInfo. My research found that the only effects that you can enchant on gear that give a benefit to your follower are:

-Fortify Carry Weight

-Fortify Health

-Fortify Heavy Armor

-Fortify Light Armor

-Fortify Magicka

-Fortify Stamina

-Fortify Unarmed

-Muffle

-Resist Fire

-Resist Frost

-Resist Magic

-Resist Shock

No other enchantments showed an effect on a follower when checked in console. -MrExcitement 15:11, 17 January 2012 (UTC)

That's definitely a good start, but it's not the whole story because e.g. getav meleedamage is bugged and always returns 0 for NPCs, so the only way to tell if a Fortify One-Handed enchantment actually does something or not would be to check on an enemy's health between hits. Aliana 15:28, 17 January 2012 (UTC)
I wanted to know this as well as after I hit 100 Enchanting I went to a lot of trouble to outfit Lydia with as much stuff as I could, including fortify blocking and one handed. After I read that only select enchantments worked I went to go check her values through getav. I found that Fortify Health definitely made a difference when I removed her +62 health armor (344 to 282). But I removed her shield with +40% block and one-handed and the values for OneHandedMod changed from 80 to 40, and BlockMod from 160 to 120. I admit that I don't fully understand where the values come from, but that looks like the change I should have expected? It sucks though that apparently DamageResist is messed up as her values are -1185 with full armor. I think this might have something to do with a Marked for Death glitch? My DamageResist with a similar set of Daedric armor (but with Heavy Armor bonuses) is 450 something.--PIngp0NG 17:40, 17 January 2012 (UTC)
Thanks, and you've answered your own question (as well as mine). re your Marked For Death problem, try clicking on her and restoreav damageresist 9999. Aliana 18:28, 17 January 2012 (UTC)
Confirmed that -100% Destruction Cost gear on Jordis still has no effect on weapon charge use in the current patch. Aliana 19:34, 17 January 2012 (UTC)
Confirmed that -100% Destruction Cost gear on yourself also has no effect on Jordis's weapon charge use. Aliana 20:11, 17 January 2012 (UTC)
Tested the Fortify One Handed, Two handed and Markman with rings and engaging a follower. Tested both regular and power attacks with the enchantments on and off with no damage difference for any of the Fortify Skills tested.
Also checking the <skill>Mod value only shows what SHOULD be getting added on and not what actually is. For example, I checked the GetAVInfo Marksman value during this testing and it showed no change (which was also reflected in the actual damage testing I did). Checking GetAVInfo MarksmanMod showed there SHOULD have been a 40 percent bonus that was not actually occuring. -MrExcitement 00:40, 18 January 2012 (UTC)
Hmm, disappointing that it's not working. I totally believe that though, as I did not test the actual damage being done, just the stat from getav. I tried getav MarksmanMod removing and then replacing a 40% archery bonus helmet on Lydia and the stat did change, so it's too bad if it's not actually helping. Oh well...looks like I'll just have to boost health and one of the known working modifiers instead.--PIngp0NG 01:37, 18 January 2012 (UTC)
Confirmed, it's broken. Jordis does 19.5 damage with an Ebony Sword and no gear, and 19.5 damage with +130% 1H gear. That really sucks, not least because my own 1H is much lower than hers but I get 51 damage out of the same weapon (against a dragon, so no armor). I haven't tested 2H or bows, but I'm happy to take MrExcitement's word for it. That means there are no useful enchantments at all that you can put on a housecarl's helm, and since Jordis is at the armor cap already in just Epic Ebony (with a Fortify Heavy one or two pieces) there may well be other slots that don't really have anything worth doing with them at this point: I'll make her some new gear and see. So to sum it up: "<Skill/Stat> is increased by <mag> points" works, but enchants that are "<Thing> is <mag> PERCENT better/cheaper/etc" don't. Aliana 09:08, 18 January 2012 (UTC)

() So Cicero only gets use of muffle out of his own clothes? and some use of destruction and I don't think he barters much. Way to choose the wrong clothing, crazy jester. Djarknaein 22:05, 25 January 2012 (UTC)

Fortify Carry Weight is not working
Even though getavinfo carryweight claims that the enchantment was increased, it is not. Once you actually give an item to your follower the value resets to its base. I tested this with Lydia:
1. Initially she has Current Value: 300.00, with an enchanted ring and amulet: Current Value: 366.00, Modifiers: Temp: 66.00
2. I gave her an amethyst, she now carries the ring, the amulet, and the amethyst.
3. Her Carry Weight is Current Value: 300.00, Modifiers: Temp: 0.00
I remove the claim from the article. — Unsigned comment by 188.103.42.235 (talk) at 12:24 on 7 February 2012
I've found on Xbox that Fortify Health Regen works on followers and enables them to stand back up quicker during combat instead of waiting till the combat has ended. Lord Eydvar 19:51, 23 February 2012 (UTC)

Follower's stats after recruiting them to Blades

It is a common concensus that stats of followers are determined by your level when you encounter them first and will not upgrade after. You can fix it by using concole commands (only available for PC). It was mentioned somehow however that stats of Aela might reset during the initiation to werevolves (needs a confirmation).

My question: what about recruiting to Blades. It turns out that after this procedure they got a new default set of armor and weapons so it seems reasonable to guess that their stats also might be reset. Can anybody on PC check it?

Because if it is true then you can "upgrade" three your favorite followers which might be a kind of fix of that stupid leveling problem for non-PC players.--31.128.132.4 16:14, 21 January 2012 (UTC)

It is kind of unclear: do you confirm that their stats are correctly recomputed? Don't forget that they also recieve a full set of Blade Armor which might increase their fighting abilities even with the same stats.--89.23.180.18 12:00, 7 February 2012 (UTC)
This is a really good point. I did the Wabbajack trick (PS3) on Lydia and J'Zargo before joining them to the blades thinking it was necessary. (Edit) And since I still had my save files from them, I tested this. Recruiting followers for the Blades does not adjust their stats. My approximately level 6 J'Zargo lost half his hit points to a Wabbajack blast both before being recruited into the Blades and after, with him wearing new Blades Armor. However, after turning him into a chicken with the Wabbajack and punching him, a blast took off about 5% of his hit points.
However, marrying a follower does seems to reset them. I just married Vorstag (recruited at about level 22, married at about 43). I loaded up a pre-marriage save and the Wabbajack dealt about 1/3 of his hit point bar with a blast. I loaded a current save and went home to him. I used the Wabbajack and he only took a tiny bit of damage from a blast; I continued until he polymorphed from it, and again he only took a fraction of his hit point bar. --68.73.194.252 01:30, 19 February 2012 (UTC)(Alessar)

Wrong in the notes

'This means they will always equip an ebony armor piece over an orcish one for example, even if the orcish one has been enchanted, or has a higher armor rating from smithing.'

This is not true at all. You can get your follower to equip any type of armor you want as long as you upgrade it. They most definitely factor in the armor rating, given their skill. You even get them to pick followers with 100 rating in Heavy Armor to pick Elven over Ebony if you get the armor rating high enough to overcome their difference in skill. I don't know the formula but this info should likely be removed & revisited — Unsigned comment by 98.176.242.147 (talk) at 07:15 on 23 January 2012

I gave Lydia a Steel Plate Helmet, and a Wolf Helmet. The Wolf Helmet was improved to Legendary, with a value of 375 and a rating of 38. The Steel Plate Helmet was unimproved, and had a rating of 19 and a value of 300. Lydia preferred to wear the Steel Plate Helmet. I increased the rating of the Wolf Helmet to over 200 and there was no change in her behavior. You don't need to provide a formula, but one specific counterexample (NPC, Armors, improvement level, etc) would be helpful. -Vardis 07:57, 23 January 2012 (UTC)
I think it's as simple as "sometimes, they just do stupid stuff". All of my Jordis's gear is Ebony smithed to Epic and double-enchanted. I gave her a completely "normal" Ebony armor (or maybe shield?) from loot to carry back to town, and she immediately equipped it. My guess is it's the same family of bugs as Soul Gems randomly filling and emptying when stacked and unstacked, all Light Armors being weightless if one is, all Briar Hearts / Giant Toes / Amulets of Mara/Talos/etc becoming undroppable if one is a quest item, and so on: it gets the right FormID, but then ends up equipping the wrong instance of it. She also prefers unimproved helmets of any type to the Legendary Steel one she has, and every single one of them has a lower AR than that does. So I'm with Vardis. They obviously try to choose the "best" gear available to them, but they just get it wrong a lot as soon as it's anything more complicated than "completely normal X >= completely normal Y". Aliana 12:53, 23 January 2012 (UTC)
I have seen some very bizarre behavior in follower equipment choices. I have seen the same thing as Aliana where they would equip the unimproved version of an armor when multiple versions were available. Once J'zargo equipped a Robes of Quickening instead of Steel Plate, then later he decided to switch back to the Steel Plate for no apparent reason. He also seems to like any kind of Circlet, even unenchanted, to his Novice Hood. He also tends to equip various one-handed weapons and bows in his inventory while walking around, but in combat he uses spells or fists. There seems to be little pattern to it. Arcanist 03:07, 26 January 2012 (UTC)
Isn't these ratings you see based on *your* skil level? so when lydia has a different skill level, the formulas in the game will come out with different ratings? also it appears that some enchantments sometimes are calculated too, whenever I give her two things of the same, just one enchanted she will pick the enchanted. — Unsigned comment by 87.155.87.54 (talk) at 20:38 on 29 January 2012
I can't know how my followers see the armor. I am trained in light armor. Housecarls are trained in heavy armor. The armor I give to them has laughably low ratings because I see them from my perspective. For example, at the moment the rating of my legendary glass armor is 282, while Iona's legendary steel plate armor is 83. Usually I propose them choices. As they prefer legendary steel plate armor over exquisite ebony, and the ebony armor goes into a chest. --93.73.19.163 06:55, 22 February 2012 (UTC)

Looking for a way to make a follower dual-wield

As topic says, i am looking for a way to make a follower dual-wield, and yes i know Jenassa can do that per default, but i'd like to know how to script another follower to equip a 1h weapon in each hand.Blashyrkh 01:30, 24 January 2012 (UTC)

Pickaxe can "make any follower force dual wield, by giving them a pickaxe"(See Pickaxe). I failed anyway. --FelixH 16:05, 1 February 2012 (UTC)
When I made Vivienne Onis a follower using the console and equipped her with forsworn gear, sword and axe, she often duel wields. Not sure why but it sure looks cool. --Tiger8u2 04:15, 3 February 2012 (UTC)

Followers can Unlock almost ANY door

I figure out that if you tell your follower to wait near a door you wish to be unlocked and then push him into that door, they'll unlock it. This includes all normal-locked doors up to Master locks and MOST doors that Requires a Key. I only found 3 doors this trick doesn't work on; two are in the Thalmor place. I thought I should say because it's prolly a glitch or something. — Unsigned comment by 172.129.1.69 (talk) at 01:44 on 30 January 2012

Actually it turns out that you may order your followers to open any lock even though no visible lockpicks in their inventory are available. Level 1 Faendal opened Expert locks without any problem but sometimes he refused to do this probably due to some pathfinding or crime issues.--89.23.180.18 11:54, 7 February 2012 (UTC)

Magical Effects on follower equipment not applying constantly?

I have been experiencing a strange issue where a follower (J'zargo) would suddenly and unexplainably lose the Fortify Carry Weight effect from a ring I had enchanted with a 31 pt Enchantment and given to him to wear. While in the trading screen, I filled him up to capacity while the ring effect was working, then took about 15 weight of items from him and was unable to give any of it back. I confirmed he was still wearing the ring, and he had no others in his inventory to trip him up. Using getavinfo carryweight to verify, I saw he was not getting any benefit. After taking the ring and giving it back the console showed the enchantment applying again. After doing some more trading, he again lost the effect. Can anyone else confirm similar experience? And if this is happening with this Enchantment, it might explain some of the reported randomness of other Enchantments working/not working for people. Arcanist 08:02, 30 January 2012 (UTC)

Can A follower activate standing stones (steed stone) and get the effect from it?? — Unsigned comment by 70.65.10.130 (talk) at 04:31 on 31 January 2012
I'm not sure if this was supposed to be a response to the topic or it's own section, but if you read the article, you will see it states that followers can not activate standing stones. Arcanist 05:33, 31 January 2012 (UTC)
Send a follower home and recruit them like 2 weeks later and they will be your level.. It has happened to me bunches on times. — Unsigned comment by 71.48.66.143 (talk) at 03:54 on 9 February 2012

Severe issue

I've been going through the Saarthal quest with Erandur as a follower, and after one fight with a Draugr Deathlord, I've found that he appears to be unable to exit combat mode. He holds his hands up, though there are no spells equipped, He is unable to heal properly, being knocked down doesn't help, quicksaving and loading doesn't help. I can't talk to him to tell him to do something or dismiss him. If it makes a difference, he is wearing the Vokun mask and Skjor's Wolf armor and boots. Anyone know a solution or encountered this problem? Besides reloading the area (Which I'll do).118.93.252.246 09:14, 1 February 2012 (UTC)

"I'll head back home if you need me."

When you dismiss a follower and they head home, do they travel the entire distance on foot? 98.70.67.71 14:31, 1 February 2012 (UTC)

It appears true, and sometimes they die when running into enemies or traps. --FelixH 15:03, 1 February 2012 (UTC)
Thus if you want to dismiss your follower but still planning to use him/her after it is better to travel to his/her home and do it there.--89.23.180.18 12:07, 7 February 2012 (UTC)
I saw ridiculous behaviour of Agis in my brother's gave. My brother went into Canselmo's lab. Agis, his follower, was not happy. So, my brother dismissed him. Yet, while aware of my brother's trespassing, the housecarl was not aware of his own. He went deeper in the lab, probably because this was the shortest way home, and started a fight with the guards. --93.73.19.163 06:36, 22 February 2012 (UTC)

Uncommandable follower

Non of my followers seem to be able to be told to do something for me, every time I select the option and tell them to do something they just stand there. Not sure if anyone else is having this problem because I haven't seen it anywhere else. — Unsigned comment by 2.220.238.69 (talk) at 00:13 on 5 February 2012

Do followers get their racial bonuses?

For instance, does Nord follower get +50% frost resistance? — Unsigned comment by 24.91.160.9 (talk) at 00:30 on 7 February 2012

yes, same as all other NPC's 212.219.252.228 09:20, 7 February 2012 (UTC)

Follower's Enchantment testing

Tested Some enchantments for J'zargo

as stated before/above magicrestist / frost/fire/shock resist work +magicka/stamina/health enchants also work did not test +damage modifiers

Did test magickaregen , Confirmed it works. getav magickarate stays the same (3). getav magickaratemult changes accordingly (150 with his standard +50% gear// 300 with enchanted gear). hit him with dual cast thunderbolt , this damaged his magicka 50 points. with standard gear he regenerates this in approx. 5 seconds. with enchanted gear in approx. 2.5 seconds.

on the contrary; while -20% destruction gear (nahkriin) does state a "getav destructionpowermod" value of 20. this does not reduce his magicka usage. tested subsequently with -100% destruction gear: J'zargo uses soms lightning bolts then switches to sparks , maintaining these because of regen or switching to melee on 0 magicka (As stated previously above).

Ergo

best way to enchant follower caster gear in my opinion is to max their magicka pool and give them as much regen as possible (as mana regen is not so slow as to be uselesss in combat, health regen on the contrary, is too slow to benefit from enchants.).

Did not test -% destruction gear with staves, one above poster has reported this DOES work , provided that the staff is added to follower's inventory AFTER the -%destru gear.

Dark Brotherhood Initiate

I've noticed two interesting bugs with these followers but...

1. Are they still invincible as of the latest patch?

2. You can have two followers at once by 'dismissing follower 1, recruiting and dismissing follower 2, recruiting follower 1, then recruiting follower 2' where follower 2 is the Drak brotherhood initiate and follower 1 is any other permananet follower. Haven't checked this though.

Is it possible to do this and get two Dark Brotherhood Initiates?

Someone please answer these because if you can get two invincible followers that would be awesome. Slightly game breaking, but it's difficult to get them so this would be a nice reward, for those of us who actualy want it. — Unsigned comment by AstroSteve (talkcontribs) at 11:06 on 11 February 2012

Getting a follower to leave the Blades

I regret making Aela join the Blades, now I want her out of it. Is there any way to do that, even if by console commands?— Unsigned comment by 187.67.2.160 (talk) at 12:21 on 19 February 2012

Non Combat Skills

Has any light been shed on the point of noncombat follower skills(Alchemy/Smithing/Enchanting)?

It's quite silly for these to be the primary skills of some of them. I understand it was probably for flavor but as it stands makes people like Sven severely underpowered. 76.115.235.109 12:17, 23 February 2012 (UTC)

Follower dies bug

I was doing some quests and Lydia died but i never got the letter that says she died so I have no follower and cant get one because they all say I still have one... Please help me. — Unsigned comment by 178.118.107.153 (talk) at 11:02 on 26 February 2012

I married Cosnach and had him my follower at the same time on the PC version of Skyrim.
I started a new game, however he has the dialogue as of a follower when i just met him that playthrough. I tried to dismiss him but the dialogue is still there and doesn't change. I can give him commands to wait here but cannot trade with him and can marry him without the nedd of the barfight, but i can't have him follow me. Also i can have a actually follower follow me like the other follower in the silver blood inn. I just can't have cosnach follow me, which is what i want. IS there anyway to remove the dialogue of a follower from Cosnach? — Unsigned comment by 130.156.24.211 (talk) at 16:42 on 26 February 2012
