Hroggar Dead before Quest[edit]

I thought it was worth noting that the character can be killed before the player receives the quest, but that this will not prevent the quest from starting anyway. However, within moments of starting to add this information to the page, the revision was undone. So rather than try to add it again, I thought I would start a discussion. — Unsigned comment by 174.21.129.4 (talk)

Did you read my edit summary? It's not specific to this NPC - any non essential character can potentially be killed by a dragon. And in Hroggar's case, it's unlikely that he will be killed anyway, since he spends most of his day inside Alva's house. Kitkat TalkContribE-mail 13:11, 26 December 2011 (UTC)
Yes, I did read it. But most non-essential characters aren't the triggers for quests. I thought it was interesting that he could die before the quest triggered and it didn't stop the quest, even though the dialog refers to him as though he is alive. (Obviously he is also not guarding Alva's house.) And it may be "unlikely" that he dies, but it's certainly possible. In the game I'm playing right now, the dragon took him down to the point where he stopped fighting and tried to cower, and then a mudcrab came up to him and killed him. — Unsigned comment by 174.21.129.4 (talk)
But you didn't even specify what would happen if he died before the quest. You just made a random comment about something that wasn't unique to this NPC. And as you just said, he wasn't killed by a dragon in your save, he was killed by a mudcrab. So saying that's it's possible for him to be killed, when he's non essential, without specifying why this is important, is uneccesary to say the least. That's because I didn't know whether the quest would still happen or not, when I first wrote that. A few hours later I found out that it would, and went back to update what I had written. I found out you had deleted it. I take your point that such a death could happen to anyone, but this is quest-related and therefore seems interesting to me. I'm going to try a revised edit. — Unsigned comment by 174.21.129.4 (talk)
Pleases excuse me if I mess up something here, this is my first comment on this wiki. After a blood dragon killed Hroggar near the bridge in Morthal, I googled him on UESP to see if I needed to reload my last save. First I read the main Hroggar article and discovered that it wouldn't be necessary to reload. Then, I read this talk page and felt that I should mention that the bit about not needing him for a quest was useful, and it was exactly what I was searching for in the first place. Thanks for the info. itchybig 66.87.108.168 06:26, 31 December 2011 (UTC)itchybig
Welcome to the site! I just want to point out that the edit I reverted didn't contain any information about any quests - just said he could be killed by a dragon, which wasn't very helpful since he's a non essential NPC. No worries, it's all fixed now. =) Kitkat TalkContribE-mail 06:31, 31 December 2011 (UTC)
This is what the article said when I read it: "If Hroggar should happen to die before the quest begins, this will not prevent the quest from triggering and proceeding as normal." But this discussion leads me to a related question. That is, if any non-essential NPC dies before I get a quest that involves them, can I still do the quest with no problems, or should I continue to look them up on the site? Also, if an NPC dies without me killing them, I can assume they're non-essential, correct? Sorry if these questions should be posted elsewhere, but since y'all are already discussing it, I figured I should ask. itchybig 66.87.108.168 07:28, 31 December 2011 (UTC)itchybig
Those kind of questions belong on the talk pages for the related NPCs. And yes, if you kill an NPC that means they're non-essential. Kitkat TalkContribE-mail 07:41, 31 December 2011 (UTC)

Hroggar & Alva?[edit]

This page says Should Hroggar survive the quest, he will attempt to return to a normal life. However for me Hroggar & Alva have gone back to how they was before the quest. During the day he makes comments thanking me about saving him from Alva but then he still lives with her and when I enter there home he still becomes instantly hostile. Is this because I saved Alva from the vampires too? Kimi the Elf 16:35, 3 January 2012 (UTC)

I'm not sure, but I'd be instantly hostile if you entered my home too.174.0.116.189 09:33, 13 January 2012 (UTC)
I've been using the wait function for months in-game trying to obtain a Staff of Revenants so that I can use him as the only target for the Ebony Blade charging. When I last entered his home to test the Staff of Reanimation on him he was completely unhostile. I had to tell Lydia to attack him to get him to pull a weapon. The staff failed because of his level, but I thought it worth noting that after a few in-game months and quite a bit of lumber sales he was not hostile. He didn't even ask me to leave. — Unsigned comment by 75.205.190.212 (talk) at 06:35 on 21 May 2012

Hroggar's Inheritance[edit]

i finished laid to rest a few hours ago. unfortunately i did kill ada in the cave, not realizing it was her until after i had saved (meh she wasn't really nice anyway). anyway after wandering around doing other things for the jarl (yeah i am a thane), i exited the jarl's place to be greeted by a courier with a letter of inheritance from hroggar. i have no clue how or where he died i had been planning to buy lumber from him. but for some reason he left me the yuge sum of 100 gold minus a just tax of 10 gold. thought i would mention it as i didn't see it mentioned on the page. — Unsigned comment by 108.239.152.131 (talk) at 05:36 on 24 April 2017

Inheritance is a generic NPC occurrence, so not notable. —MortenOSlash (talk) 15:44, 24 April 2017 (UTC)

So Hroggar is mad at me for killing Alva[edit]

I walked past him and he said you would speak to me after everything you've done? I guess losing his wife and little girl wasn't a big deal to him — Unsigned comment by PrinceRetro (talkcontribs) at 22:39 on 25 May 2018

That's just a result of the way the relationship was coded so it appeared that way before the completion of the quest. As noted on the page, he will thank you for killing her, and yet be rude/hostile to you for the same thing. If you don't kill Alva then you don't get the disposition hit. Jorgen and other villager spontaneously attack Hroggar[edit]

I finished the quest without killing alva or hroggar. after a while, jorgen up and attacked Hroggar out of the blues. checking relationship values got me : hroggar toward me : 1, hroggar toward jorgen : 0 Jorgen toward me and hroggar : 0. So that is not the cause Falion and thonnir also joined, helping jorgen. loading a previous save, resurrecting hroggar, reseting AI... did not work (they stopped fighting, then resumed at the end of the effect). I am checking factions now.
