[edit] Locked Door

im at this part where there is a door but i dont know how to find the key to open the damn door — Unsigned comment by 97.104.18.201 (talk) at 23:41 on 13 November 2011‎

I'm assuming you are past all of the Falmer, right? If so, you need to go past the corridor on the opposite side of the room. There will be a spider guardian carrying the key. elliot (talk) 23:44, 13 November 2011 (UTC)
It's actually in the chest BEHIND the spider guardian, the guardian isn't carrying it. At least that's where I found it. 66.31.67.4 01:11, 16 November 2011 (UTC)
For a detailed walkthrough its less info than the short one, need serious reworking, this is a key part (no pun intended) and its missed out, usually going for the guardian is on the way out, i saw it and went back thinking i'll do that after. If i get chance later i will redo the detailed walkthrough but whoever wrote that needs to do a detailed description of the walkthough not the background in future. (Killerchronic 22:03, 5 December 2011 (UTC))
Since it said "turn back", I went all the way back, instead of staying inside Mzulft Aedrome - because, Yes it said "turn back"! = lots of dead Falmer...
Anyhow, I've added that you should turn back straight across from the locked door. straight east. This annoyed me quite some. also since I opened up all those hellish Master level locked doors in trying to find that stupid key (I wish it could have a spell, like in Oblivion - I hate all those locked things, in which you get like 12 septims when you are rich as a ..troll... sigh - sorry for the rant. I really do hate those Loooooong never-ending caves and ruins, as well) ). For a while I felt "Oh noes, don't say it's in one of the Chaurus" since I have the Voice of the Sky active and didn't want to ruin it. Tockenen having a migraine at 07:30, 28 January 2012 (UTC)

[edit] The Oculary

Am attempting to use the Oculary to focus the crystal, but nothing I do seems to have any effect. The strategy guide refers to "streams of bright light," but I see nothing like that. Is this just my poor computer, or have I neglected to do something to turn on those bright lights? Also, where should I be standing when I shoot fire and/or frost, and what should I be aiming at? Wordmama 23:30, 17 November 2011 (UTC)

Me again. I waited till the real-life sun went down and my computer room got darker, and then I could just make out the dust floating in the beams of light. They were still almost completely invisible, however. The basic procedure is: 1. Put the crystal in the machine where the arrow is. 2. Shoot a frost spell (to make the beams of light move up) or a fire spell (to make the beams move down) at the crystal until the beams strike the three circular bands around the dome in their center, where the mirrors will eventually be. If you're starting from the beginning, three frost spells will do it. 3. Go to the upper platform and use the three buttons to rotate the circular bands and move the three mirrors so the beams of light hit them. When all three mirrors are hit, the journal updates and your friend below starts griping. -- Wordmama 04:19, 18 November 2011 (UTC)

It seems for me that no matter how many ice or fire spells I cast, the beams only go from in between one band, to in between another. It seems as if there are only 2 'positions' for the beams to be in, and i cannot place the mirrors properly when the beam is either one. Am I missing something here?
EDIT* switched over to frostbite and it worked fine, not sure why but ice spike didnt seen to do it. Maybe certain parts of the oculary have to be targeted or that the ice spike spell itself is somehow bugged. Maybe its worth putting in the notes? --J.J.-Lopez 00:08, 17 December 2011 (UTC)
Only frostbite and flames worked for me, like the doors in labyrinthian Hope 01:26, 31 December 2011 (UTC)
I encountered the exact same problem. I found that exiting out of the game and restarting fixed it (the beams should be highly visible no matter what the light is like in your room). Apparently there were some artefacts affecting the lighting which happens sometimes when the game runs for too long. --71.196.204.238 23:26, 28 January 2012 (UTC)

[edit] Zero cost spells

has anyone else encountered a situation where after you bypass the ward in the main room your restoration and destruction spells cost no magicka? — Unsigned comment by 166.82.245.89 (talk) at 20:51 on 19 November 2011

Sign your edits! And no everything cost normal for me. (Killerchronic 22:06, 5 December 2011 (UTC))
That's happened to me before earlier on in the game. After fighting a dragon I suddenly never used magicka again. Went away after i went to the leveling up screen though. 108.29.82.171 10:23, 23 December 2011 (UTC)
I had this same problem and was very frustrated. I found that it was because I was using ice spike, and for it to work, you must use frostbite. You don't need fire — Unsigned comment by 71.212.4.210 (talk) at 17:56 on 19 February 2012

[edit] More info on bug...

About the listed bug about a single fire or frost spell moving the beams to their extremes and not being able to stop in between, my own observation was that this happened when I used Firebolt/Ice Spike, but it functioned with the normal increments when I tried Flames/Frostbite instead. Possible workaround? I wonder if the OP of that bug also tried different fire/ice spells? 124.170.115.20 02:34, 23 November 2011 (UTC)

[edit] Next quest not activating

This one is being a pain in the ass. I've spent around 4 hours trying to fix it with console commands and tinkering with files and nothing sems to work. Mirabelle refuses to give me the new quest during the conversation and due to Bethesda's faulty numeration you cannot activate MG05 after you took MG06. You can finish mg05, but you get no extra effect. You also can activate MG07 but you're missing the items to open the doors to Labrynthian, plus you miss a big chunck of ths story. — Unsigned comment by 81.35.28.61 (talk) at 17:31 on 25 November 2011

Update: 26/11 21:01
I continued from a save where the quest was not completed, played for several hours and came back to check if I could complete the quest and this time I did. Just save before speaking to the archmage after returning from the ruins, play other quests and come back after a while to check. — Unsigned comment by 79.148.200.226 (talk) at 20:03 on 26 November 2011
If you play at the pc you can use your console to spawn torc of labyrinthian. This is the item that you need to open the door at the Labyrinthian. The item ID is 000A34F8. — Unsigned comment by 82.95.242.233 (talk) at 11:31 on 28 February 2012

[edit] No Crystal ?!?!

I cleared and looted the whole place up to the end (weighed 2500+ lbs), but couldn't kill the Dwemer bot protecting the key to the oculory, so I left and trucked everything home, went on a smithing rampage with all my new metal loot, made exquisite elven and dwarven armor and exq. dwemer warhammer and exq. skyforge greatsword, got a new flame cloak spell as well (and btw killed another blood dragon), went back and killed the bot, found out I needed some crystal (according to the interwebs in a falmer) but can find NO CRYSTAL!!! I think leaving the Aedrome may have nuked my Arch Mage plans. I do not want to do all that over again. It took a few hours. Any help for this Xboxer? -- Chris 71.42.151.123 22:31, 26 November 2011 (UTC)

Update, answered by a guy on Yahoo Answers. I can't believe it. I am always so thorough about looting. In a pile of three falmer in the anteroom of the great hall that precedes the oculory, I found I had missed looting one of the falmer. Their natural nakedness tricked me. Sorry for the inconvenience. -- Chris 71.42.151.123 00:35, 27 November 2011 (UTC)

[edit] Focalising the crystal

You have to hit different places of the middle thing, not just the crystal, to be able to get the beams of light on the spots. The crystal makes the rays go up and down, and the things underneath it make them go sideways. I have no idea what I did, but I know it has something to do with those. Hitting the crystal alone just doesn't do it.

Might want to put some thought into that.

[edit] Can't reach Mirabelle (PS3)

Mirabelle seems to be on top of the tower on the College. I can't get to her as the door to Skyrim from the Arch-Mage's quarters is locked. I have tried pick-pocketing the arch-mage, but he doesn't have the key. Is there anything I can do? Hiddos 16:41, 8 December 2011 (UTC) (forgot to login last time)

Edit: I tried redoing the quest from all three of my safe files, and she's always up there. Hiddos 16:57, 8 December 2011 (UTC)

Hiddos I FOUND HER!!! She is on a ice wall at the bottom of the college. Go across the bridge toward the village from the college. When you get to the end make a uturn and walk all the way down to the bottom and cross the river. Then walk toward the base of the college. There is a place you can run up/jump up. You will see it from the river. Then just walk up the ramp to the other side of the college. You will see her standing there. I found it out of pure aggravation. I looked for an hour then just said "screw this!" and jumped from the top of the college where her icon was showing up. As I fell to my death I saw her standing there. leevilresident 68.106.87.125 03:07, 11 January 2012 (UTC)
Thanks, leevilresident. I'll look into it later. I hope it works... 83.117.255.151 14:10, 22 January 2012 (UTC)
Confirmed on PC- she's exactly where you said! Go round the north side of the massive rock stack, you'll see a slope that you need to jump up. Follow the stack round to the right and she's just standing there waiting. Thanks! xTx — Unsigned comment by 78.105.153.101 (talk) at 16:04 on 23 January 2012
As this has been quite a while ago now and my previous save file was completely bugged, I started over and had no problems with this now. I could reach Mirabelle just fine. I think this was fixed in a patch. Maybe this section should be deleted? Hiddos 20:33, 28 May 2012 (UTC)

For "leevilresident" & "Hiddos": Mirabelle hears a frusrated student yell out, "Screw this!" The last time she heard someone say that, it was an offer from a flasher. But not this time! As she watches the student fall to his death, she wonders what she can do about it. By the time she comes up with a solution, the THUD has happened. She rushes over and finds the student's navel as she exclaims, "I think he said this was his reset button and that I should press it if I ever saw him die. Well, here goes...." Of course the reset worked, but she won't be the one that remembers what happened. But the student does, and this time he manages to walk to her without leaping to his death while making sexual innuendoes. *** Well, I'm glad that worked out for you! Now thanks to your efforts, you've saved me the same frustrations! Hurray for talk pages! Leo Star Dragon 1 (talk) 08:48, 18 November 2012 (GMT)

[edit] Can't place crystal in the oculory

No activating bottom appears. I have crystal in my inventory but i can't place it. 83.149.8.17 18:50, 8 December 2011 (UTC)

[edit] Reversed walkthroughs

It seems to me that the Quick and Detailed Walkthrough sections need to be redone. The Quick Walkthrough is far too long (11 steps when it probably could be summarized in 3 or so), and the Detailed Walkthrough just summarizes what the Quick Walkthrough said. Eganio 11:17, 10 December 2011 (UTC)

[edit] Walkthrough Missing Psijic Monologue?

After killing Paratus Decimius and trying to find the obligatory quick way out of Mzulft, Quaranir of the Psijic Order popped in and told me I was on the right path but that I needed to get back to the College. --Tiger8u2 23:30, 24 December 2011 (UTC)

If you don't notice the quick way and end up walking the long way back he doesn't talk to you. I think it should be mentioned that you need to turn left just before returning to the room where the all the Falmer was. I missed this on my first play through however it didn't affect the quest in anyway. Kimi the Elf 23:50, 24 December 2011 (UTC)

[edit] Centurion

I had a Sphere instead of a Centurion in my game, in the place where the dead Falmer are. There was also no wall place for a Centurion. Should the page be changed? 98.209.18.176 03:03, 31 December 2011 (UTC)

Similar for me, only I ran into a Spider Guardian (extremely low level character, just made him because I wanted a pure mage character). I think the page should probably be changed Atomic223 18:45, 6 July 2012 (UTC)

[edit] projection

///SPOILER ALERT/// Paratus claims that the projection is incomplete because the eye of magnus is making major interferences. Logically, after the Psijic Order takes away the eye the projection should be complete. That doesnst mean that Bethesda thought of it or went trough the trouble of it. My question is: is the projection replaced if we revisit the ruins after the questline is complete? Pizza_Boy 09:35, 4 January 2012 (UTC)

I don't think anyone has bothered to return to the ruin to check it after the quest. You could start up Arniel's Endeavor, which would provide a great excuse to go back there and find out yourself. Minor Edits 09:41, 4 January 2012 (UTC)
I was planning to do so Tomorrow night If I had not gotten an answer in the meantime. I thought of this today and am now at the previous quest. — Unsigned comment by Pizza boy (talkcontribs) at 09:47 on January 4, 2012
No, it doesn't change. --Killfetzer 09:53, 4 January 2012 (UTC)
Well, there we go. Good question, but a follow-up that concerns me is whether to mention this on the page. While spoilers typically aren't a concern on the site, but that's because relevancy and our own judgment naturally tailor them. I don't know if it's worth including spoilers about the end of this quest line to explain that the speculative hypothesis of an NPC on a relatively minute detail during the quest was apparently erroneous. Minor Edits 10:28, 4 January 2012 (UTC)
No it's not worth adding, it's pretty useless. it would have been nice to add to the page if it did change though. Pizza_Boy 03:01, 5 January 2012 (UTC)

[edit] Cleanup a Success

To the person responsible for the 'cleanup' tag, I would like to announce the desires outlined within have been fulfilled. I neglected to remove the tag myself in fear of the possibility it may contravene the rules. Esoterik 00:12, 20 January 2012 (UTC)

[edit] Walkthrough needs to be rephrased!

It's not a detailed walkthrough. If it was, it would e.g. simply tell "Cast Frost Spells 3 times on the Focusing Crystal. Wait for each one to complete (takes a few seconds). Head on up to push the buttons. Push the Left button 1 time. Push the Middle button 6 times. Push the Right button 5 times.

A walkthrough always has spoilers, so if you think this is too much of a spoiler, then so be it, but the way it is now, it has way too much "babbling" in it (re: the actual thing above, it makes just as much (non)sense as in-game, so it's pointless imho) plus it is not a detailed walkthrough when missing things like the above.

So...I do not know the rules for such "spoilers" (as mine above) but if letting people know how this puzzle should be solved, then this walkthrough definitely needs to be rephrased - and it needs to be detailed. Just my humble opinion. I don't know your rules. I usually think this wiki is super-duper great! I've learned a lot from it, too, not just by walkthroughs but the Lore and such. Great job everyone! :-) Tockenen

Edit a short PS: Sorry if I sounded whining and complaining. Having a bad day today. I really do appreciate this site and all the contributions. Tockenen 18:55, 28 January 2012 (UTC)

This solution worked for me, and I've added it to the walkthrough. --JRTalk E-mail 13:45, 1 June 2012 (UTC)

[edit] Focusing the Oculory

I found the description of how to do this confusing. After scratching my head for a while, and messing aroud with the device, I finally worked out what was meant, and have attempted to make things a bit clearer. I hope it helps. Peterguard 23:35, 10 February 2012 (UTC)

[edit] Fire bolt works

In the article there is written that only flames and frostbite works for the calibration, but I am pretty sure I was able to do it with fire bolt (was a bit unprecise, but possible). Could someone verify it? — Unsigned comment by LexterU (talkcontribs) at 11:55 on 3 March 2012

From the coding I'm seeing in the CK, it was at least intended that only FrostBite and Flames would work, but it's always possible that there's some bug that's not obvious at a glance. Robin Hoodtalk 05:02, 30 March 2012 (UTC)

[edit] Light Beams

The light beams. But anyway I jsut wanted to note that you can minimize and maximize the game again to fix it. (you do this by hitting alt+tab, clicking skyrim on the bar, hitting the windows key to bring up the start menu, and then clicking anywhere not on the start menu. It crashes occasionally, but usually works.) 74.132.249.206 13:58, 13 March 2012 (UTC)

[edit] Focusing the Oculory

1. Experiment with the buttons to find out what they do. 2. Use Flames and Frostbite on the crystal to get the beams where you want them. 3. Use the buttons to move the targets into the beams. — Unsigned comment by Biggus1 (talkcontribs) on 24 April 2012

[edit] Spells not activating puzzle

I am stuck on the oculory puzzle on the PS3 version of Skyrim... I am level 22, my ice/fire spells are at a 30, but they HAVE NO EFFECT WHATSOEVER on the crystal when struck. I equipped enough magic gear to keep a steady flow going for a good solid 90 seconds and NOTHING MOVES. PLZ HELP!!!!!! — Unsigned comment by 76.177.7.144 (talk) at 17:44 on 4 December 2012‎

[edit] Gavros won't die (Xbox 360)

I got the quest from Mirabelle, went to Mzulft, and accidentally sneaked in to the very first room with Gavros Plinius inside. He said "Crystal... gone.... Find...Paratus...in Oculory..." and then made a noise. Now whenever I look at him he says normal people phases like "good morning," but he won't die. Any Suggestions on how I can overcome this problem (besides loading from previous saves because I troubleshot for a while and that kind of deleted that autosave). — Unsigned comment by 24.211.128.198 (talk) at 22:08 on 24 March 2013‎

I have also just now gotten this same bug (Xbox 360), I came here to see if there was an answer or solution...24.20.93.79 01:02, 23 February 2014 (GMT)

[edit] Buttons in the oculary

The thing is, buttons don't work in oculary. All I have is one save in the beginning of Mzulft Aedrome. Crystal can be placed and focused, but buttons don't respond. Through console I skipped this part of quest and even saw the projection of Tamriel. Then i talked to Paratus, the end of dialogue was glitched and i couldn't exit, so i killed him through console. After, I exited through nearest door, I didn't receive appearance of Nerien and came to College. Firstly, when i came to hall of attainment, Savos had right dialogue options, but they did nothing, there was no barrier, Mirabelle and Savos stayed for a while and started walking away, not letting me complete this quest. I downloaded save before entering th hole and traveled to solitude to sleep ~48 hours in proudspire manor(i suppose details can help resolving the problem) and came back to hall of attainment. When i entered it, still no barrier, and i am stuck, can't do anything. So, question is, is there any ways of resoling this quest and starting next? ANYTHING! I have back up saves before each traveling commands etc.

UPD Now barrier is up, Savos and Mirabelle talk a while, she starts casting spell and still i freeze and can't talk to Savos or help deflecting the barrier. When reloading autosave, sometimes i am stuck right after entering the door, but still barrier is up. — Unsigned comment by 109.172.15.29 (talk) at 23:43 on 11 April 2013‎

[edit] Boss doesn't have to be a centurion

First time I ever did the quest it was a dwarven spider worker because I was roughly level 3-5. However the way I left it worded seems like it could use some cleanup.--69.136.59.17 02:22, 4 August 2013 (GMT)

Additionally I just happened to be on this quest when I was making that edit and even though I was a full level 22 my boss was a sphere master. It certainly doesn't have to be a centurion. Although a centurion would have been preferable XD--69.136.59.17 08:27, 4 August 2013 (GMT)

[edit] Mzluft Aedrome Marked as Cleared

The dungeon was flagged as cleared before the centurion in the east wing was despatched. Should have known better before opening that door...--Lmstearn (talk) 14:07, 22 March 2014 (GMT)
