Magicka?

I'm curious to how she manages to have such average magicka at Level 50 (around 250 I think), yet consistently throughout my game she pretty much spams destruction spells nonstop, not to mention uses her resurrection summon constantly. Anyone know?--Barfightbob 16:04, 5 July 2012 (UTC)

The Royal Armour she wears has a +125% magica regen, does this account for the magica use you observed? 80.176.229.143 07:03, 6 August 2012 (UTC)
Serana has a unique Drain Life that costs 0 Magicka, and at higher levels it drains Health, Stamina, and Magicka. Meaning that as long as she can channel it on a target she'll never run out of mana. Omniance 01:36, 29 August 2012 (UTC)

Serana wait glitch confirmed solution!

There is an unknown issue regarding Serana. Asking her to wait at a location will cause the Follow Me command to disappear completely. POSSIBLE, UNCONFIRMED SOLUTION: Go to a town like Whiterun and wait for 72 hours or more. Serana should come back to you.

I tried it myself (lurker in this page) and it worked. I had to wait a bit more but she returned to Whiterun eventually and it was fixed. — Unsigned comment by 24.171.232.19 (talk) at 19:51 on 20 July 2012

Doing anything where she is involved in a storyline advancement makes her follow you again too. Had the wait bug right before I got Auriel's Bow and when I got it, she was fixed. 72.94.55.236 15:15, 3 August 2012 (UTC)
Just another lurker, the 72 hour wait(I waited a few days longer than that) did not bring Serana back for me. I tried it once before entering the first of the five dungeons leading to Auriel's Bow which didn't solve the problem. She randomly re-appeared towards the beginning of the dungeon when she had something to say but she still didn't have the follow option restored. After the first of the five dungeons I tried waiting in Whiterun again but nothing changed. — Unsigned comment by 108.222.181.67 (talk) at 21:42 on 5 August 2012
The problem appears to be a quest variable that is called upon when you talk to her. The variable in question is "CanFollow_var" and belongs to the quest "DLC1NPCMentalModel". This quest controls the conversation options with Serana and does not work correctly once all her conversation options have been choosen/tried out at least once. I got the bug once I used the last remaining conversation option (the one about curing her vampirism) and the problem has persisted ever since. If you encounter this problem, you can try to add a generic "Follow Me" topic from one of the other followers to her in the Construction Set, but this will add one more mod to load and potentially cause problems. Hopefully she will get fixed in a future update. --Geistertanz 20:41, 8 August 2012 (UTC)

Interaction broken? Annoying

I've noticed her NPC has a different type of proximity interaction (I guess that's what it's called). She will repeatedly say "Yes? Did you need something" or whatever every time you get close to her. It becomes extremely annoying after a while. Other NPCs don't show this type of behavior, not even Lydia. Should that be mentioned in the Bugs section? I know I had to google it because I thought it was weird. Kretik 20:11, 20 July 2012 (UTC)

I've noticed Niranye in Windhelm do the exact same thing when you are using the Arcane Enchanter behind her market stall, likely because you end up standing right behind her while you're using it. Very annoying, but not unique to Serana. --XyzzyTalk 20:49, 20 July 2012 (UTC)
Ahhh, interesting. I never really ran into it so I assumed it was specific to Serana. Still, the issue here is that she's a follower so you end up spending a lot of time with her and it gets on my nerves. Wouldn't really mind that from random shopkeepers or whatever. --Kretik 22:31, 20 July 2012 (UTC)
Does Niranye speak every five seconds (without exaggeration) if you are in close proximity to her? Like OP said, Serana is unique in this regard that she simply won't shut up if you are anywhere near her.--DaedalusMachina 11:50, 28 July 2012 (UTC)
It's not really "unique". Mjoll the Lioness is the same way, as I'm sure others are too. ABCface 12:03, 28 July 2012 (UTC)
This seems to happen once you start the quest Chasing Echoes, but stops once you enter the Soul Cairn. Like Barbus on his quest, she just wants you to get on with it. I noticed it when siding with the Dawnguard, as I went to rescue Florentius Baenius in between. It drove me nuts! — Unsigned comment by 80.2.78.110 (talk) at 17:50 on 9 August 2012

() She stands very close and sometimes pushes you, resulting in many annoyances. Does Bethesda test anything? — Unsigned comment by 67.164.33.239 (talk) at 02:23 on 24 August 2012

Again, not unique to Serana. Yes, it is quite annoying, but there are several other followers who do this, so it's not noteworthy enough to be noted on this article. ABCface 02:58, 24 August 2012 (UTC)

Immune to frost spells.

Feel free to use Serana to lure enemies tightly together and spam them with Ice Storm since she resists frost based magic(Just for me? I'm surprised it wasn't mentioned here if this is not the same for everybody.) — Unsigned comment by Indifference84 (talkcontribs) at 20:34 on 30 July 2012

Well i'm not sure, but I would think that it is because she is a vampire. I think all vampires have a resistance to frost and weakness to fire. I don't think she is completely immune to them tho! — Kimi the Elf (talk | contribs) 21:04, 30 July 2012 (UTC)
She is a Nord Vampire after all. Stage 4 vampirism gives 50% frost resistance and her nord race gives her another 50%. Whether this caps at 85% or goes all the way to 100% I can't say. BUT she is extremely hard to kill with frost based attacks anyway. --Skyhirider 15:47, 3 August 2012 (UTC)
This could also be enhanced by the fact that she has the "Magic Resistance" perk. It grants a 10% resistance to spell effects. If this were to be calculated in game while ignoring her other resistances, then even if her Frost resistance does cap at 85%, it would give her an additional 10% resistance, making her immune to 95% of the damage done by frost spells. This is obviously purely conjecture on my part since I don't know how these mechanics interact with each other, but if it does work in this fashion, then she would be only taking insignificant damage from any frost spell that wasn't insanely boosted and repeatedly cast....... ---Gamer3427 04:17, 26 August 2012 (UTC)

Fix for Curing Serana (PC)

I found a way to cure Serana's vampirism even if you picked the wrong dialogue option earlier. Open the console and type "startquest dlc1seranacureselfquest". After that Serana will leave you and say that she will do it (look for a cure). After 4-5 days, she should be appearing at Fort Dawnguard as a human. I'd suggest using this only after the Dawnguard main quest line. -91.89.252.214 21:27, 3 August 2012 (UTC)

Alternatively you can undo that bad choice by typing this into the console
'SetPapyrusQuestVar DLC1NPCMentalModel ToldPlayerSheDidntWantCure False' before asking her
If she refuses to talk about it, run this 'SetPapyrusQuestVar DLC1NPCMentalModel CutOffCureDiscussion False' — Unsigned comment by 87.115.124.81 (talk) at 12:10 on 11 August 2012

Ref/BaseID?

I've tried both prid (refid) and placeatme (baseid) to find/create Serana (she's vanished in my game, and neither waiting nor searching her usual haunts has helped) based on values listed on the main page (xx002B74 and xx002B6C), but the game doesn't recognize either of them. Can someone confirm that they're correct or not? — Unsigned comment by 86.165.72.98 (talk) at 15:03 on 5 August 2012

edit: Found her. All Dawnguard characters's IDs seem to preceded by "02" not "xx" (no idea where that comes from). So Serana's refID is in fact 02002b74, iirc. — Unsigned comment by 86.165.72.98 (talk) at 15:13 on 5 August 2012
The problem is that the 02 at the start can change if you have various mods installed. Thats why we use xx, but i feel it should be noted somewhere that it works like this. unless you already know chances are you wont figure it out. — Kimi the Elf (talk | contribs) 15:16, 5 August 2012 (UTC)
I also think this should be noted somewhere, though I'm not sure where would be the best place for the information. Maybe either the Console page, or the main Dawnguard page? Also, I've seen someone edit the RefIDs to have '03' at the start rather than 'xx' or '02' on one page already, so it does appear that it actually varies (and isn't just '02' for all players), as Nephele assumed. ABCface 19:11, 5 August 2012 (UTC)
I was able to find Serana by using the command console player.moveto then her refID being 02002B74. And voila, it teleported me to wherever she was stuck lol.. — Unsigned comment by 112.204.109.81 (talk) at 16:37 on 8 August 2012

() As stated earlier, not everyone would use 02 as the first set of numbers. The xx that you see mentioned within Ref. ID#'s means XX corresponds to the Dawnguard Mod and where it is listed in your Mod lineup. For instance, if you use Nexus Mod Manager, look at your Plugins tab. Your first is always going to be Skyrim. And it's listed as 00 in the load order. Under that you might have "Update", listed as 01, and THEN you might have "Dawnguard", and THAT shows load order 02. So that is where you get that number from. But it's a possibility that others might have Dawnguard in the load order as 03. (Shrugs)...but just wanted to pass that along in the hopes of solving some of the confusion that seems to exist.  :-) — Unsigned comment by 67.142.164.26 (talk) at 05:38 on 12 August 2012

Serana imitating Cicero's pose - moved from article

In Dawnstar's Dark Brotherhood sanctuary, in the Torture room/place you find Cicero "injured", Serana will lie down and asume the "injured" position Cicero had when you first visit the Sanctuary.

This needs verification bug, and rewording if it's true. It may just be a bug. --XyzzyTalk 17:32, 5 August 2012 (UTC)

It sounds legitimate. Serana has the unique habit of interacting with her surroundings as a follower, and there's likely nothing stopping her from interacting with Cicero's "injury activator". It's rather specific to bother noting, though. I wonder if there are any similar activators that she can incorrectly use; if so, the note could be more generalised. —Legoless 18:03, 5 August 2012 (UTC)
She definitely interacts with various parts of your location a lot more than any other follower I've ever seen. She was using the Skyforge during Kodlak's funeral during the Companions questline for me, she's prayed to the shrine of Mehrunes Dagon during that Daedric quest, and other odd things as well. I do think generalizing her interactions with activators would be better than listing every unique one. ABCface 18:54, 5 August 2012 (UTC)

Serana stuck @ Japhet's Folly

Accidently went to Japhet's Folly with Serana as a follower and now she is stuck there. She will not follow when I fast travel. I parted ways and waited 5 days but she never left Japhet's Folly. I tried player.placeatme xx002B74 and only got an error. how do i get her out of there? — Unsigned comment by 71.91.164.70 (talk) at 20:18 on 5 August 2012

thank you that worked. she wouldn't talk to me and started walking away, but after I went back to HQ she was fine. thanks! — Unsigned comment by 71.91.164.70 (talk) at 20:25 on 5 August 2012
My Serana is stuck inside Broken Oar Grotto. She'll follow me around and fight inside, but she won't leave, and I can't dismiss her either (when I try, she makes as though to leave, but turns invisible at the door, and becomes impossible to interact with, unless you consider bumping into her interacting). I've tried setting the followers count to 0, but that didn't work, and when I try to place her at me, her ID doesn't work. The code player.placeatme 02002B74 didn't work, as it doesn't recognize the ID. I have no idea what to do! 76.89.158.230 12:04, 7 August 2012 (UTC)
You can try the ID 03002B74, then 04002B74, 05002B74, etc. until you find one that works. The reason we have 'xx' at the beginning of the baseIDs on this site is that the first two numbers can vary for different players, probably dependent on other mods that are installed. ABCface 13:44, 7 August 2012 (UTC)

() I had Serana get stuck in the same spot in my game. She would not leave the Grotto so I had to abandon the quest since I am also running into the no follow issue. I am on 360 so console options don't work for me. I truly hope she gets "fixed" in an update since she is a great follower.Elianna.whm 06:30, 15 August 2012 (UTC)

Well, after running into this problem I stopped playing Skyrim for a few days, and when I came back and reloaded the save, it seemed to be fixed. She followed me out when I left the cave, and I just went back to the castle, then left and re-entered a few times, and she seemed to start following me correctly again. Not sure if the problem is permanently fixed, or if it's just temperamental, but it seems to have resolved itself. That said, I've taken a break from Skyrim for a bit, probably going to wait for the next patch to come out and fix some of the issues with Dawnguard. 76.89.158.230 10:21, 15 August 2012 (UTC)

Significantly less damage casting vampiric drain when Serana is the Dragonlord's companion

I just noticed this phenomenon while I was trying to figure out the cause of the loss of the rejoin dialog option from Serana. When she was no longer my follower, the vampiric drain spell became much more powerful. — Unsigned comment by 24.212.163.182 (talk) at 23:54 on 6 August 2012

equip elder scroll like serana

so, i was wondering if it was possible through console commands to equip the 'elder sroll (sun)' just like serana did, i thought it looked bad ass and wanted to do the same. it seems as if it took up the spot where a quiver would go if she had one so... just wondering.

Try player.additem 0201a958 1 or player.equipitem 0201a958. It should act as ammo; it's marked as a Steel Arrow with different skin. Vely►t►e 16:12, 7 August 2012 (UTC)

Bugs: Serana stuck in sneak mode, vampiric drain reanimate animation loop

Killing your own reanimated zombies while sneaking may cause Serana to stuck in sneak mode. She will sneak constantly or use "stealth roll" to move around. To trigger this go in sneak mode, hit your own reanimated zombie with sneak attacks until zombie goes hostile and then kill it with killcam move. After this Serana is stuck in sneak mode (will stand up only to talk to player or idle near player). Fast travel, using shouts or saving & reloading game won't fix this.

This is old bug, but I mention it too as it wasn't listed on Glitches: monsters/NPCs killed when targeted by Vampiric Drain (Serana uses this often in combat), Paralyze or Giant Smash Move will be stuck on moving animation loop when reanimated. Saving and reloading game fixes this.

Patch 1.7.7.0.6 with DG. 84.251.33.3 07:27, 8 August 2012 (UTC)JT

I find that the stuck in sneak mode bug can be solved by clicking her in console, then disabling, and enabling her again. She reapears standing.69.116.237.215 05:34, 13 August 2012 (UTC)
Does anybody know how to fix this on xbox? Im playing as a sneaky archer and she gets stuck in sneak mode after almost every battle. Ive tried having her wait for a while and coming back later, Ive tried saving and reloading, Ive tried using unrelenting force on her, nothing works and its pretty frustrating. Im not killing her zombies or anything so I dont know what is causing it, but Im tired of reloading previous saves and losing 10-15 minutes of gameplay all the time. 71.181.54.110 07:37, 20 August 2012 (UTC)
I had this happen once, although I'm afraid I don't remember the solution. I remember her being an annoyance for about 20 minutes, then turning around and seeing that she'd changed back to normal. Here are some possible solutions to try in-game:
  • Just wait it out. Have you tried simply continuing for a while until she stops? This worked for me, and it may work for you. If this isn't enough, then try:
  • If you're on a quest with her, finish it. The quest scripting may be conflicting with her AI in some way, and I do recall the problem appearing during a quest (although admittedly, most of the time that she was following me I was questing).
  • Get on horseback and run as far away from her as you can. If you can get her into a different cell, then it may reset her AI (or at least the part that is causing the forced sneaking). Ironically, in Skyrim many AI problems can be fixed by running away from it as fast as you can. To bring her back, just fast travel or enter any interior cell (such as a cave or building).
  • Have her stop following you, leave, go somewhere else, wait 72 hours, then come back. This is somewhat inconvenient, but it should also work. Just make sure to have her stop following you when you're not in the middle of a quest in which you need her.
  • Copy your save onto a PC that has both the same patch as well as Dawnguard installed, and fix it on the PC. This is pretty drastic, but is actually pretty easy - you just need a flash drive. I for one am planning on doing this to fix Blood on the Ice.
I suggest that you go through the solutions in order, because they are ordered from easiest to most annoying. Post your results once you can. • JAT 08:37, 20 August 2012 (UTC)
I did as you said and just waited it out, it eventually did go away on its own although Im not sure what the trigger was to make it go away. I know I ran like halfway across the map leaving her behind and when she eventually caught up to me she was still crouching, so I dont think getting to a new cell helped. I even went through doors into new areas and she was still crouching. I also didnt dismiss her at all, so that wasnt it. Anyway... it did eventually go away after a half hour or so of gameplay so thanks for the tip :) 71.181.54.110 11:02, 22 August 2012 (UTC)
Just an update. I continued playing with Serana and of course she got stuck in sneak mode again after a couple battles. I was watching her carefully this time to see when and how she came out of sneak mode. I came upon a cave bear and I went into sneak mode to get past him without engaging in combat (serana had been stuck in sneak mode beforehand). I entered the water while still sneaking allowing the swimming animation to break me out of sneak, then I swam across and exited on the opposite side where the game dropped me right back into sneak when I hit land, I then continued sneaking until I got back near my horse where I stood up and ran over and mounted him. When I turned back around serana was standing again. (So short story is Im not sure if it was crossing the water that did it, or if it was me mounting the horse that did it, but one of the two did the trick.) 71.181.54.110 00:55, 25 August 2012 (UTC)
That was pretty simple for me: using "sit anywhere" mod i created "cross-legged sitting spot" and just wait until she set there. Than i just moved from her to force her follow me and seems like it works. That would probably work w/o mod - just wait her for using some chair, and problem should be solved.

Marriage Dialogue

I couldn't get any sort of marriage dialogue from Serana after I turned her into a human. After going to previous saves, it seems that I couldn't ask her at all.

I guess the only reason why this is happening is because I joined the Dawngaurd faction instead of the vampires? Even though I know you can't marry her, I would like to at least have her speak the dialogue so I can get some sort of closure (I like role playing). — Unsigned comment by 96.245.251.104 (talk) at 00:47 on 12 August 2012

Maybe a pc user, can check what causes the dialogue, and then add it to the article.--Br3admax 01:44, 12 August 2012 (UTC)

Game freezes when Serana is follower

After finishing the Dawnguard quest, the game freezes all the time when Serana is my follower. This happens every 5-10 minutes. However, if I send Serana home the problem seems to be solved. The error returns if I ask her to be my follower again. The log file shows some Serana-specific errors such as "Property WindWalker on script DLC1SeranaLevelingScript attached to (03003BA8) cannot be initialized". The log file ends with hundreds of these:

Will Not Follow During Prophet (Dawnguard)

I've reached the Prophet quest for the Dawnguard, and I cannot bring Serana along to find the Moth Priest. She commented that she is "Not so sure about [my] friend." By this I assumed she meant my follower, the one I didn't have. Despite the fact that I've been chasing her around Fort Dawnguard all by myself, she still says, "If you want me to come along, it has to be just the two of us." I do have mods that affect followers installed and loaded. However, I have tried uninstalling them, but to no avail. For the curious, they are as follows: Ultimate Follower Overhaul (with Dawnguard Patch), My Home is Your Home, BB Luxury Suite (it really only adds extra dialogue options, but you never know).

TheUnforgiving 03:03, 19 August 2012 (UTC)

Your followers have to be dismissed in order for Serana to follow you. If you just have them relaxing/waiting somewhere, then Serana still views them as following you.
So enter the console command: 'show playerfollowercount' if it shows a value, then you know you have followers waiting for you somewhere. If you have them waiting in the Luxury Suite, and had them "Living" there with you, just dismiss them. They'll still be waiting for you at the Luxury Suite since that is where they're living now. Or you can enter in the console 'set playerfollowercount to 0' — Unsigned comment by 67.142.164.24 (talk) at 04:23 on 23 August 2012

Fun Bit of Trivia

Not sure if this is worth including in the main page, but Serana's voice actress, Laura Bailey also did the voice of another famous female video game vampire (dhampir), namely, Rayne from BloodRayne. I wanted to put it here first, rather than drop it on the main page, in case no one else thought the actor allusion was funny. Black jack king 11:02, 22 August 2012 (UTC)

We don't usually put such trivia on this wiki. ABCface 13:57, 22 August 2012 (UTC)
I understand your point. Skyrim has a much larger cast than Oblivion and Morrowind, and most of them are either Elder Scrolls veterans or have been voice actors for years, so it would clutter the wiki to call out every amusing actor allusion when there are so many. And it does break the "in-universe" part of the wiki, especially when you get into the Lore sections on characters who appear in multiple games. It's probably better for fans to happen upon it themselves than to be randomly confronted with real world trivia when all they're looking for is either a hint on how to beat the nasty boss or some explanation for why this character is carrying around an Elder Scroll with no ill effects. So yeah, you're right, it shouldn't be included. Black jack king 19:58, 29 August 2012 (UTC)

Strange physics glitches

I was going through a pipe-filled tunnel in Arkngthamz when I glanced back to see that she was erratically moving. She seemed to flicker or vibrate as snuck down the tunnel. I know this probably isn't unique, but I've seen very few movement glitches that look this bad (only one dragon landing on another looked this bad to me). Also, she did her hands on hips pose while I was trading things with her, and I discovered that when she equips a shield it ends up rotating around inside her stomach with the handle close, but not quite in her hand as if it can't find the exact position of her hand or something whenever she does that.--Playerseekingbugs 18:09, 26 August 2012 (UTC)

The fact that she does not always return to walking after sneaking is not unique to her. I had the very same problem with Farkas during proving honor before dawnguard was installes. — Unsigned comment by 82.73.72.148 (talk) at 18:10 on 30 August 2012
