Locations[edit]

Anyone want to start a list of where the marks can be found? Theres not too many in the various cities. 87.194.26.132 16:29, 25 November 2011 (UTC)

yes please!

Ok so they are on most buildings (besides purchasable houses!) But they can be hard to find, on stone buildings they're not on the door frames look on railings, above or to the sides of the door and remember to check all the doors for that building since they're not always on the front door. They are not on any of the palaces and only rarely on buildings outside of the main cities. Wooden buildings they're usually on the door frame on the lower left corner but again check all the doors and railings since its not consistent. Ex. On Erikur's house in Solitude the "Protected" Symbol is on the front door to the left of the frame but its actually on the barrel next to the back door. Lord Eydvar 05:03, 12 December 2011 (UTC)

Is it worth me making a list of all the locations that I find marks on during my travels? Rawb 13:13, 21 December 2011 (UTC)
Maybe I'd only bother with the harder to notice ones since the obvious ones are well obvious. Stick with the weirdly placed ones like the couple in Riften on the doorstep or the ones on the side of the porch supports in the couple cities for example. The rest of em are pretty easy to spot if you're looking for them. Lord Eydvar 05:47, 22 December 2011 (UTC)
I've found them on every house and most stores. I could do a list of them when I have time. Lord Irvine 14:57, 30 December 2011 (UTC)
Personally I dont find them obvious at all (mostly only found a few in Riften) and would like an exhaustive list one of these days :) Concept 10 / 10 though. Thieves Guild is the best guild AND quest chain by far.
I wondered what these symbols meant! Some are easy to find but some are not so easy. There is one under the bridge inside the entrance to Whiterun. Was annoying me for ages not knowing what it meant! Kimi the Elf 17:24, 2 January 2012 (UTC)
Found a loot one on Belyin Hlaalu's house door and another on Atheron residence in WindHelm. Both are poor and the loot ain't no great thing. Maybe it's cause they are black elfs or maybe is cause the loot is somewhere near those houses. So they might be misleading. I will keep lokking.
The Loot marks are on most locations that have a chance for containing higher value items, only time I've seen the Empty mark is on houses that have like nothing at all worth selling. If it has even 1 random container it'll have a loot mark. Lord Eydvar 21:41, 16 January 2012 (UTC)

List[edit]

I'm starting my list - Rattigan IV 19:15, 3 January 2012 (UTC):

I tried to do Whiterun the other day, these was all I found. Loot ones seem easiest to find, or maybe there are just more of them. There is probably more tho, but hopefully could help you! I was gonna make a page but didnt know how so gave up! ^_^

Protection Mark[edit]

When you loot the Protection Mark, do the hired thugs come after you? Does anything happen when you loot from places with that mark?- Azurome 05:01, 5 January 2012 (UTC)

I dont think so, Mavens house and the Battleborn house both have Protection Marks, but I havent noticed anything happening after looting from those houses afew times. Even when im spotted they just tell me I shouldnt be there. — Kimi the Elf (talk | contribs) 01:49, 16 January 2012 (UTC)
Protected marks are on locations relating to Thieves Guild quests. Since the Black Briars, Battleborns, Erikur etc are all related to these quests it's to attempt to prevent you from messing up later questlines. Lord Eydvar 21:43, 16 January 2012 (UTC)

List of Shadowmark locations[edit]

This is a list of every Shadowmark I was able to find. It seems like they are only in the cities the Thieves Guild has influence in. I dont think this is a complete list however as I was unable to find even one mark for "Thieves' Cache".

Looks good. There's gotta be a place on the pages for this. Maybe on the Thieves Guild page? Anyways, I found one more: as you enter Irkngthand Grand Cavern, there is a Guild Mark on the table in front of you. You have to stand on the table to notice it. Minor Edits 06:14, 17 January 2012 (UTC)
I've added a Thieves' Cache. --Killfetzer 21:02, 17 January 2012 (UTC)

Irkngthand[edit]

Location Mark Notes
Irkngthand Grand Cavern Guild Mark On top of table in front of entrance.
Irkngthand Grand Cavern Empty Mark Chest behind gate in southwestern room.

Found another for Irkngthand, so I thought another table would be appropriate. I'm sure there's more that I overlooked. Minor Edits 07:17, 17 January 2012 (UTC)

Minor Glitch on PC?[edit]

I've experienced a glitch with the appearance of shadowmarks on PC; after they appeared in cities in my first save file (i.e. upon completion of the thieves guild quests for hold capitals), they started appearing in all subsequent save files of other characters before the quests have been completed. Has anybody else experienced this? ThuumofReason 14:05, 29 March 2012 (UTC)

They are there from the start, I have a low level charachter who has only progressed to whiterun and they are all there. It's only after you get into the thieves guild and find the book that they are able to be interpreted. The Silencer has spoken 17:50, 29 March 2012 (UTC)
Really? Huh, I could've sworn that they didn't appear with my first guy until the guild took over a hold... ThuumofReason 18:26, 29 March 2012 (UTC)
Most are there to start with. some only seem to appear later on, perhaps after certain quests? I could not find the many of the Thieves' Cache marks on characters who I had not done much of or any of the Thieves Guild quests. — Kimi the Elf (talk | contribs) 18:27, 29 March 2012 (UTC)
Using saves from my charachter who has done nothing but visit cities, the only thieves cache mark found was Ysolda's but the cache never shows up anyway, and the only mark I couldn't find was The White Phial's. It seems that the thieves caches only appear after a certain guild quest, but 'all' others are there. The Silencer has spoken 18:48, 29 March 2012 (UTC)
All marks will appear upon first making a character, except the ones on the side of the cache barrels. The caches are SET to appear when you finish the special job for a city, but it's been known to not happen like that. Also, the Riften cache's appear once you get to a certain point in the TG - still working on finding the exact triggers for these; if anyone knows the CK well please contact me Whispendtalk 11:34, 14 August 2012 (UTC)

Mistveil Keep Cache?[edit]

Can't seem to find it, checked everywhere up on the upper floor, particularly near the barracks entrance as it said, lots of barrels, no cache. Any tips? Anyone have this problem?

50.54.210.0 07:32, 25 August 2012 (UTC) Lost

I'll go check it out again, although you may just have a plain glitch. A lot of caches don't appear when the accompanying quest has been compleated - although Mistveil is Riften, which should all appear upon starting the TG. I am still having the scripts attached to these looked for, untill I can manage that then I have no 100% on WHAT causes the caches to appear. My best advice if you want it specifically is to do more quests for the TG - although if your done with it, i can't offer much help sorry. Whispendtalk 02:45, 26 August 2012 (UTC)
Note: Also, the barrel is on the 2nd floor you know right? go into the 'mistveil keep barracks, up stairs, and then back outside. Cluster of 3 barrels in front of you, it's the back left corner one. Whispendtalk 03:04, 26 August 2012 (UTC)

Consistency[edit]

I believe that all of the shadowmarks should be listed the same (at least in the cities). Doesn't really matter if it's in the picture format or table format though table would probably look more... professional. I'd be more than happy to do it but I'd like to get unbiased (I hate large images on pages) opinion. If there's already a discussion (that I can't seem to find) please point me in the right direction. Mikeyboy52 (talk) 13:41, 5 February 2013 (GMT)

The reason there are map images for Whiterun and Riften but not the others is because we don't currently have map images for the other cities uploaded on the wiki yet. (There's actually a request on the Image Requests page right now for other city maps, though for a different purpose.) Anyway, if you would like to revamp the page, you're more than welcome to put a {{wip}} tag at the top of the page and work in a sandbox. It would be nice for it to be consistent, though I'm not particularly set on any one format. — ABCface 13:52, 5 February 2013 (GMT)
Perhaps tables with numbers (like the WR and R images) with a link to the images? Looks like I'll be making a sandbox when I get back from the store Mikeyboy52 (talk) 03:43, 6 February 2013 (GMT)
There are now maps for all of the cities except Raven Rock and Irkngthand. So, maps with pogs can now be created for the cities not already having one to add more consistency. I would create the maps with pogs myself, but I unfortunately do not know how.--draagyn (talk) 21:19, 4 March 2014 (GMT)
