Revived[edit]

My Shadowmere revived after dieing from a long fall, it took awhile, and I had to go back to where he died, but once I did he was alive and killing bandits. Don't know if it's a bug or on purpose, but might be worth mentioning in the article. AlphaOmega 00:07, 22 November 2011 (UTC)

This was in Skyrim? Babytoke 08:47, 22 November 2011 (UTC)

Shadowmere is an "invincible" horse so he'll revive in a few days if he dies. — Unsigned comment by 168.7.232.215 (talk) at 02:36 on 4 March 2012

() I've just seen the dawnguard trailer. There is a new flaming horse mount, and maybye this is why shadowmere disappears for so many people. What if he shows up in dawnguard as a tougher, cooler horse? It can't be a co-incidence. — Unsigned comment by 82.3.136.235 (talk) at 21:00 on 11 June 2012

Shadowmere disappearing is a bug that not everyone experiences. The above claim is illogical, since Shadowmere is a product of the Dark Brotherhood and it's obvious Dawnguard will be about Vampires and The Dawnguard who are vampire hunters, not the Dark Brotherhood. Even if it was, Shadowmere would still be present in games that are not subject to the bug when Dawnguard is released. --VergilSparda 22:58, 11 June 2012 (UTC)
It is, this horse is called Arvak, and you can summon him after you come back... from this thing (SPOILER). Once you come back from this otherworld like place where soul gemmed souls go (called Soul Cairn) and you've talked to a soul with a horse mount looking for it, he will ask you to find him. The horse will run away from you if you spot him, if you chase him he will show you that his skull is trapped by skeletons, find it-return it- get the summon automatically. — Unsigned comment by 68.109.194.118 (talk) at 03:20 on 5 July 2012
Shadowmere will respawn if he dies at a specific location. For example if he dies at skyborn altar, when skyborn altar respawns so does he. — Unsigned comment by 71.60.98.86 (talk) at 20:42 on 5 August 2012

() Shadowmere was killed by a trap in Irkinghand. Irkinghand does not respawn. I have waited or slept for at least 23 day waiting and he has not been respawned. when he first died I searched the body and found a lot of arrows and horsemeat. Anyway the body disappeared right away but has not returned I don't want to lose him should I go back to a save before he died and redo the kill mercer quest and just keep waiting. Do I need to leave the area and then return? — Unsigned comment by 50.38.62.232 (talk) at 19:50 on 12 October 2012‎

I was able to leave and return to the area after 17 day and he was there safe and sound. Go ahead and delete the above question — Unsigned comment by 50.38.62.232 (talk) at 17:29 on 13 October 2012‎

More Detail Needed about Shadowmere Respawning/Resetting/etc[edit]

Is there a way to outline the exact results of losing Shadowmere? The page seems pretty clear, but based on comments from users and my friends' experiences, the page is wrong. One friend plays 3 different characters, and he claims when Shadowmere dies he finds the horse back at the pond at the Brotherhood sanctuary days later. When my husband ends up killing Shadowmere, the horse will suddenly appear behind him after fast traveling many days after death. He never remembers where it died, and he doesn't need to. Perhaps if you ride another horse, Shadowmere is canceled as your horse and returns to the Santuary after respawning? Or does it respawn at the sanctuary? If you don't ride another horse, perhaps it's still 'your current horse' and it fast travels with you as soon as it respawns, just like normal? Also, do you have to stay away from the entire cell/region for the 15-20 days it takes for it to respawn? Or does it respawn even if you just wait right there by the body? Also, the "15-20 days" seems really strange, I would expect the horse to respawn after a specific number of days, not a random choice within a range. Can someone with a PC find out the specific rules?

  • What conditions 'dismiss' Shadowmere to go home and not fast travel with you?
  • What conditions are needed to make Shadowmere respawn?
  • Once respawned, what determines what the horse does? (Stay, return to sanctuary, or fast travel with you)

If any of these rules apply to other horses, it would be good to add them to the horses page too, I've accidentally killed so many stolen/borrowed horses, most of the stables are empty! --Amsuko 20:17, 12 February 2012 (UTC)

revive[edit]

This has been marked as a question that needs to be answered.

whats the mechanism of this? can it be used by console commands to add the trait to other npc? like say i want the stray dog to behave as such how would i go about doing that? — Unsigned comment by 24.38.223.147 (talk) at 09:13 on 6 March 2012

Sneak increases when mounting Shadowmere[edit]

This has been marked as a question that needs to be answered.

I don't know if this is to do with the skill, or the horse, but sometimes when I mount Shadowmere, the game shows me that my sneak is levelled up. I have no idea why, I'm not in sneak mode. — Unsigned comment by 92.24.171.114 (talk) on 20 April 2012

Shadowmere just won't spawn[edit]

This has been marked as a question that needs to be answered.

During the cure for madness quest shadowmere just won't spawn from the pool outside the sanctuary. It's worked before on my two other saves but just not this one, I don't have a horse that I purchased with me as I killed it and I have tried to fast travel after the "behold shadowmere" point of the quest is completed, just really stumped. Any help would be appreciated! --VergilSparda 20:59, 2 May 2012 (UTC)

This is a game breaking bug. After Shadowmere fails to get enabled the storm will continue forever. Looks like someone doesn't know how to script properly.— Unsigned comment by 93.106.23.254 (talk) on 212:59, 19 June 2012
The Storm doesn't continue forever and shadowmere ended up spawning well after I completed the DB questline, however he's disappeared again mysteriously without dying, wish they'd patch all the Shadowmere bugs!--VergilSparda 15:29, 19 June 2012 (UTC)
After trying all the recommended actions to have Shadowmere spawn in the pool (reloading saves, fast travelling to stables, luring enemies to the pool) with no effect, I manage to have him out of the pool using the console command player.moveto 0009ccd8, that took me to some far away nordic ruin, where the horse was not seen, and fast travelling back to the sanctuary, this time to see Shadowmere standing peacefully in the bubbling pool. This was after finishing "Cure for Madness". — Unsigned comment by 81.37.73.253 (talk) at 16:07 on 5 January 2013 (GMT)

Odd Shadowmere death[edit]

After the battle for Whiterun, as a member of the Empire/Legion faction, my character went looting Stormcloak bodies, riding Shadowmere from one to the next due to being overweight. I dismounted, entered Whiterun, dumped the loot at Breezehome, went back out of Whiterun, talked to Hadvar, and found Shadowmere dead at the gate! I looted about 19 arrows from his body and used the console recycleactor to revive him. Is this a one-off glitch with re-loading the exterior cell or is it a repeatable glitch someone else has experienced? Kalevala 18:02, 9 June 2012 (UTC)

Shadowmere, unlike in the previous game, can die. This doesn't happen often due to his high rate of health regeneration, but it's entirely possible that some soldiers made quick work of him. Schiffy (talk) 05:33, 3 December 2012 (GMT)

Unreliable fix?[edit]

"Shadowmere can be debugged after this happens by fast traveling to the stable of origin of the last owned horse. Shadowmere will appear here for a second and then vanish, and reappears permanently when you fast-travel back to the Dark Brotherhood Sanctuary. If you completed Stabilized in favor of Shadr, Shadowmere will first appear at the Riften stables." -I tried this numerous times to find no success, is this a confirmed fix to the bug? --VergilSparda 20:33, 25 June 2012 (UTC)

Found Shadowmere after Dawnguard questline[edit]

So the thing is Shadowmere disappeared somewhere after finishing the dawnguard main questline for the dawnguard. I noticed it only some time after, so i traveled between the cities and didn't find her. Then I fast traveled to Castle Volkihar and there she was, standing right near the boat. After riding her she started fast traveleing with me as before. A lot of people having trouble trying to find Shadowmere after her disappearing in Dawnguard, so hopefully this might help someone. Note: she didn't die when I lost her, nor have I used Arvak outside of Soul Carin. I think she disappared during the Dawnguard attack on Castle Volkihar.... because I found her standing there chatting with some Armored Troll =) — Unsigned comment by 176.195.132.151 (talk) at 20:28 on 2 August 2012

Health difference[edit]

One one of my playthroughs, Shadowmere has 1637 health, rather than 887. Is there some factor on what level you receive him at that influences his max health? Schiffy (talk) 05:30, 3 December 2012 (GMT)

He's still unlevelled, they just silently gave him an extra 750 points in one of the patches. Robin Hoodtalk 06:03, 3 December 2012 (GMT)

Shadowmere disappearing after mounting Dawnguard Skeletal horse, Arvak[edit]

So, I play an avid assassin vampire character and always use shadowmere to get away from the guards easy after making a kill, and because I'm a vampire, shadowmere is essential to my escape seeing as my stamina wont regen in sunlight. Unfortunately, he seemed to disappear right after doing the quest in the Soul Cairn that lets you summon Arvak, the skeletal horse. I am 100% positibe that my use of Arvak was what caused shadowmere to disappear, because I rode him around the mountain to the back entrance of the castle, and haven't seen him since. This has become a huge problem for me, because I only ever summoned him once to ride around on inside the Soul Cairn using a draught of extra magicka because my base magicka is only 100, and thus I am left horseless. I went back to the pool where he initially spawns from the Dark Brotherhood and he is indeed MIA. Granted, a lot of time hasn't passed since then, so I'm hoping he'll respawn at some point. But the main point of this is IF YOU WANT TO KEEP SHADOWMERE, NEVER SUMMON/MOUNT ARVAK. — Unsigned comment by 24.144.214.248 (talk) at 01:33 on 19 December 2012

Possibly not gone forever. I had the same issue, but testing something I had to do in a previous part is moving your character to Shadowmere... if you are using a PC. ~ player.moveto 0009ccd8 (Shadowmere's ID) Otherwise you will need to return to the place you dismounted prior to mounting Arvak, at least I think since Shadowmere was waiting behind Harkon's Castle, where I left him before going into the Soul Carin. — Unsigned comment by 24.224.78.206 (talk) at 04:12 on 26 December 2012

Mounting another horse while having Shadowmere[edit]

Okay so I have the PS3 version of skyrim cause my PC is broken. Anyways I had to dismount shadowmere and mount another horse as it was glut hong and we couldn't get around it but after I moved it I got straight back on shadowmere and fast traveled to whiterun and it seemed fine so I went into my house putall my stuff away and went back to where I left him and he had disappeared and I don't know where he's gone or anything I've tried waitin days and going back to the pool at the sanctuary but nothing I don't know what else to do to get him back! Anybody help me please!?

KimmiJane... (talk) 03:56, 21 January 2013 (GMT)

Have you tried fast traveling? IIRC, he should fast travel with you, and so should appear. That will only work if he was your last-mounted horse, though. Otherwise, run around Whiterun and make sure nothing tried killing him. If he was killed, waiting is your only hope, and he could be bugged to not show up again. A place worth checking for Shadowmere - Morvunskar[edit]

I was trying to figure out where I possibly could have lost Shadowmere, and after retracing my steps and having some lucky memory, I realized I lost him on the Sanguine Rose Quest.. There is no save record of travels done on that quest, and at the end of it, the ruin Morvunskar is the perfect place for him to be killed by mages. And of course when you are teleported back to the bar you came from at the end of the quest, he does not teleport with you (or has died already). One place worth checking! — Unsigned comment by 69.11.64.181 (talk) at 20:07 on 30 January 2013 (GMT)

Health Regeneration Rate[edit]

Where can one find the riderless combat health regeneration multiplier in the Creation Kit that has been used to calculate Shadowmere's health regeneration rate in riderless combat? Also Shadowmere's race is set as HorseRace. Don't horses get a 50% health regeneration bonus (Editor ID name AbHorse)? Also does the Horse Race even normally regenerate health during combat (the Regenerate HP in Combat isn't checked in the HorseRace window) and, if not, then shouldn't there be an adjustment in Shadowmere's health regeneration formula during combat? --DagmarH (talk) 04:47, 25 February 2013 (GMT)

The riderless rate is the total of the fortified combat healing from the spells AbHorse and AbShadowmere. AbHorse comes from the HorseRace, as you suggested, and AbShadowmere is listed on Shadowmere's SpellList tab. As I recall, the total multiplier was listed in the console, but it's been too long, and I'd have to find Shadowmere to double-check. Testing at the time revealed that Shadowmere only took on the super-fortified rate when riderless. As I recall, he got the regular horse rate when with a rider. Whether it was listed in the console or not, distinguishing between a 4.0 healing multiplier and a 4.5 healing multiplier is virtually impossible due to the high rate compared to Shadowmere's total hit points. Robin Hood  (talk) 06:13, 25 February 2013 (GMT)
Yeah, just checked, and the console command getav CombatHealthRegenMult shows 4.5 (assuming Shadowmere's selected), so that's where I got that from. Similarly, getav HealRate shows a value of 5.0. To the best of my ability, I tested those in combat, and the calculated numbers seem correct. I have no idea how the regeneration during combat is being turned on, but with a 4.5 multiplier, it's astoundingly clear that it is...Shadowmere's health increases rapidly when in riderless combat, but much slower if you just walk him off a cliff. Robin Hood  (talk) 06:31, 25 February 2013 (GMT)
I must have been tired when I was looking at him in the CK and thought the 2 effects were the same in the AbShadowmere power. The Creation Kit Wiki article says that for playable races the health always regenerates in combat regardless of whether the box is checked. That being said it regenerates slower in combat for players. I guess I'm just wondering if it's the same for Shadowmere if his 1% base healing rate is reduced in combat. It's kind of academic though. With all the other percentage bonus and multipliers and the additional health it's extremely high. He didn't seem to heal that fast when I attacked him and took health readings with the console over time but that was before they patched in his extra health. Also he might not have gotten the combat multiplier with me attacking him because he wuvs me. :p --DagmarH (talk) 05:34, 26 February 2013 (GMT)
Where are we getting the absurdly high regen rate from? From what I can discern its not Normal Regen Multiplied by Combat bonus, it's just an addition bonus added on the 5x normal regen. So its not over 20% regen its 9.5% regen in combat. Lord Eydvar Talk|Contribs 05:38, 26 February 2013 (GMT)
The absurdly high regen rate comes from in-game testing combined with the normal regen formulas. For playable races, the two CK values mentioned above are both 0.7. That leads is to a normal healing rate of 0.70% of hpmax/s outside of combat, and (0.7 * 0.7 = 0.49)% when in combat. Now, it's just a matter of plugging in the numbers above. Normal non-combat healing for Shadowmere is 5% hpmax/s, and combat rate is (5 * 4.5 = 22.5)% when in combat. I considered the other options, but testing suggested that the full 22.5% was correct. To DagmarH's point, though, Shadowmere does indeed "wuv" you (very cute!), and that doesn't count as combat. It's gotta be a "red dots on the compass" combat. Go find a dragon or something else that does a good amount of damage, dismount, and watch his values via the console. Something small like a wolf, you'll never even see the damage, cuz Shadowmere just heals that fast. With larger amounts of damage, time how long it takes him to heal, and you'll come up with roughly the 368 hp/s I mentioned on the page. Because it's so high, it's hard to be accurate, but that's what the formula gives, and it seems to be correct as far as I can tell. Robin Hood  (talk) 06:19, 26 February 2013 (GMT)

() Okay well good to know it's been tested, I did do the math for a 9.5% regen at that still is ~155hp/s which is still absurd. Lord Eydvar Talk|Contribs 06:23, 26 February 2013 (GMT)

Woops, sorry, didn't notice I was talking to two people. :) Oh, and I'm leaving the Vn tag there, since I'm the one who did the initial testing. It'd be good to have independent verification of what I've said above. Robin Hood  (talk) 06:29, 26 February 2013 (GMT)

Shadowmere and Faendal[edit]

Just remembered now a peculiar incident some time ago when I arrived in Riverwood with Shadowmere. Suddenly Shadowmere and Faendal were fiercely fighting each other. I reloaded and tried again, but no difference in behaviour. I could not find what provoked it, but after the incident I established then habit of consistently always "parking" Shadowmere by Anise's Cabin and approach Riverwood by foot. (For the time being I am playing a story line where I destroyed the Dark Brotherhood, so I am currently in no position to easily do any ordinary test of the circumstances again, but will of course try again next time I start from the beginning.)

Has anyone else had this experience with Faendal and Shadowmere? —MortenOSlash (talk) 21:15, 29 March 2013 (GMT)

Did Shadowmere kill someone? It's extremely rare but it happened to me a few times when I was testing the whole Aggression thing, some people in random encounters, many of whom are set as Aggressive, just like Faendal, would keep attacking Shadowmere even after I paid my bounty. Now, normally Alvor or Gerdur would be attacking it too, so I'm not sure. Faendal is known for his weird AI, maybe he just snapped. Elakyn (talk) 23:41, 29 March 2013 (GMT)
It is very possible Shadowmere had killed in my defence, but I can not remember having had bounty for homicide anywhere at that time in that playthrough, On the other hand, having progressed this far in the Dark Brotherhood I must have done something to advance the questline that might have counted as such. I believe Alvor was dead by that time, due to his suicidal approach to dealing with Riverwood's frequent dragon attacks. I can not remember anything about Gerdur. Personally I like better the idea about Faendal having just snapped, as I never ever experienced otherwise peaceful NPCs elsewhere unexplainably attack Shadowmere like this. —MortenOSlash (talk) 08:18, 30 March 2013 (GMT)

Pleases help! Shadowmere died, won't respawn!![edit]

i have skyrim for the xbox, and i was riding shadowmere when i got attack by a dragon. the dragon killed shadowmere , and i fast traveled somewhere after that forgetting where shadowmere died. i've riden 1 horse since then that i borrowed from the stormcloaks, but now i can't find him anywhere, and its been over 3 months in game time...please i need help i want him back! — Unsigned comment by 98.20.60.95 (talk) at 03:00 on 4 April 2013‎

Try the fixes listed for the first bug on the article (where Shadowmere won't spawn at all to start with). If that fails, try fast traveling to the different stables or try riding a different horse (like one you've bought).
Also, have you ever summoned Arvak? This could possibly cause the problem. Vely►t►e 03:20, 4 April 2013 (GMT)

Shadowmere Died and Won't Respawn[edit]

Okay, so I was trying to recover some beggar's helmet from Shadowgreen Cavern for a quest, with Aela the Huntress following me for a different quest, when all of a sudden a dragon came. It hadn't gotten a chance to attack yet when I went in the cave and completed the quest. I had ridden Shadowmere to the cave, and when I got out, (s)he collapsed dead on the ground from arrows. I'm not sure what happened?? The horse had three different kinds of arrows in itself when I searched it, along with some horse meat.

So I tried a few of the tricks suggested above, like waiting 10-20 days, going back to his death location, going to the DBH sanctuary, riding a different owned horse, but nothing's working. I'm growing worried Shadowmere is permanently dead.

Is there anything else that has worked for anyone else? I'm playing on Xbox, by the way. — Unsigned comment by 99.31.185.123 (talk) at 23:06 on 28 June 2013‎

Shadowmere became ethereal[edit]

Somehow, not sure what happened, nor when it happened, my Shadowmere became ethereal. Cannot hit him (the hits go through Shadowmere and are not registered).
That makes him a perfect tank if he charges first towards the enemy and they focus on hitting Shadowmere.
I did not observe whether he takes falling damage or not.
Shouts such as Unrelenting Force also go through and don't push Shadowmere away.
I strongly believe that had happened in unpatched game. HellRider (talk) 22:00, 29 June 2013 (GMT)

Fixed. Not sure what, when or how, the game marked Shadowmere as ghost. I'm sure I didn't do that because I just learned about GetIsGhost and SetGhost, that's strange. -- HellRider (talk) 20:07, 8 July 2013 (GMT)

Shadowmere, Regular horses and Arvak[edit]

I did an experiment due to the number of posts I have read online after losing shadowmere. I used shadowmere outside of Castle Volkihar and then went to the soul cairn. I used Arvak after finding him and did not use another horse till after I defeated Lord Harkon. I then went "looking" for Shadowmere and found him on the road just above the old dark brotherhood sanctuary near Falkreath. On another game I lost my Whiterun horse after getting Arvak. I found him in front of Castle Volkihar this time. I had a theory that your horse is the last place you used him or the place you got him so I did an experiment. I went to Whiterun and used the horse from Whiterun. I dismounted, summoned Arvak and watched my horse start walking west. I though he would go to the stables or hang out, but after he got past the dragon tower I remounted him and decided he was going towards my nearest "faction" base which was the Blades at Skyhaven Temple. I went there, same steps and he started walking away again. I determined he was going to my major faction base of Volkihar Castle. Fast traveled there, same steps and he doesn't walk away. — Unsigned comment by 24.130.6.16 (talk) at 04:47 on 7 July 2013 (GMT)

I just noticed that Shadowmere has been gone after getting out of the soul cairn. Read this and found Shadowmere on the road above the old dark brotherhood. I never used Arvak outside of soul cairn. It worked on ps3.(01:49, 8 April 2014 (GMT)) — Unsigned comment by 98.194.194.170 (talk)

A boy or a girl?[edit]

I remember in Oblivion that Lucien stately referred to Shadowmere as a girl. if the one in skyrim is a reincarnation of the old shadowmere (Lucien appearing saying "hello old friend") why the gender change? anastasia0812 (talk) 19:50, 8 July 2013 (GMT)

As the article states, there is no real explanation as to why the gender changed. The game data for Skyrim states that Shadowmere is male, so that is why he is listed as so. Forfeit (talk) 20:45, 8 July 2013 (GMT)
must have missed that, thanks. anastasia0812 (talk) 23:06, 8 July 2013 (GMT)
It doesn't appear to be a mistake in game data. In one of the Dark Brotherhood quests after you kill Cicero, Gabrielle tells you Why don't you hold onto Shadowmere a while longer? He's a fine steed... -- HellRider (talk) 23:21, 8 July 2013 (GMT)
Yes, that is the question. In Oblivion, Shadowmere is referred to with female pronouns, and Skyrim with male pronouns. --AKB Talk Cont Mail 23:33, 8 July 2013 (GMT)
Okay, there are so many questions about the horse's gender, so here it is: the problem is human error. In the design stages and phone calls, people heard the name Shadowmere as "Shadow Mare". Many of the scripts and dialogs were then written by these people thinking that the horse was a mare, or female. Shadowmere is and always has been a male horse, but rewriting the texts and re-hiring the voice actors to re-record the voices relating to Shadowmere just to clarify the gender pronoun for a minor character was not cost efficient, so many of the female references stayed in the Oblivion game. By the time Skyrim went into development, it had been made clear that Shadowmere was a male horse, so the correct pronouns were used in the newer game. Minotaur (talk) 16:34, 6 September 2014 (GMT)

Finding Shadowmere[edit]

I play on the Xbox 360. So no matter what I did i couldn't find Shadowmere, and I didn't remember where I saw him last.I looked for months. Then I decided to make sure I didn't have any other horses owned.I went around to the different stables of Skyrim and killed all the horses. Then I fast traveled back to the sanctuary by the tar pit and he was up on the road.I thought he was gone forever but for a 5 bounty per horse killed I got him back.Glad I tried it. — Unsigned comment by Darkstorm965 (talkcontribs) at 22:46 on 10 July 2013

Is This Bad?[edit]

I cried when I fell off the Bridge to The College of Winterhold. I CRIED over the death of a horse in the game. I stood at Shadowmere's body and waited for 9 days. then I turned away and waited the last day. He didn't come back to life. I need to load. I didn't do anything, luckily. I just waited at his body.

It is a bug that he didn't respawn. I'm on Xbox 360 so I obviously can't use console commands. Anyways, if Shadowmere dies either wait 10 days or load. :) — Unsigned comment by Anastasia0812 (talkcontribs) at 10:03 on 13 July 2013 (GMT)

I do not think it works if you wait on the spot. I believe you should leave the area for ten in-game days, and then return to the spot where Shadowmere died, possibly without visiting the area during these ten days. —MortenOSlash (talk) 14:30, 13 July 2013 (GMT)

Dragons and shadowmere[edit]

So, I was riding shadowmere to a quest marker and a dragon appeared. Since I had just finished the quest line for the dragon born add-on, I wanted to test out riding a dragon. I hopped on the dragon, fast traveled to a few locations, then got off the dragon. So, I went back to the location she (or he) was at, but shadowmere was NOWHERE! I have been in the general location for I think at least 5 days for sure, not including the days that would've passed, but I still can't find her! She didn't die, at least that I'm aware of. Since I couldn't find her, I hopped on a regular horse, but I noticed that the other horse appeared with me where I fast traveled with the dragon. Seeing that, I fast traveled to all the other locations I rode the dragon to, but she isn't at any of those locations. I check at both sancuaries when I first realized she was missing, and about to check again. I'm playing on a PS3, by the way. Has anyone had this happen to them? I would really appreciate some help in this! — Unsigned comment by 108.247.188.204 (talk) at 23:17 on 7 November 2013 (GMT)

Skills? Stealth Mode?[edit]

So, the article has Shadowmere with One-Handed, Archery, Stealth as skills. But can he sneak? Can any horse? Or is there no way to stealth with horses? FMPhoenixHawk (talk) 21:07, 17 January 2014 (GMT)

Horses can't sneak. Every NPC has skill sets (even children and animals), and that's what they decided to give Shadowmere. VycDarkshadow (talk) 05:13, 22 January 2014 (GMT)

How to switch shadowmere for frost[edit]

I finished the dark brotherhood quest line a while ago and Shadowmere worked just fine. Then, I got into a fight with a bunch of animals, hopped on another horse, and rode off. After that, I couldn't find Shadowmere and so I started to ride Frost, the horse you get after completing the Promises to Keep quest. How do I get rid of frost and bring back shadowmere? Do I have to kill him? — Unsigned comment by 174.16.106.141 (talk) at 05:09 on 12 February 2014 (GMT)

There might be a number of reasons. What platform are you playing? Have you bought or used other horses after you left Shadowmere? Do you have any mods of unofficial patches installed? —MortenOSlash (talk) 06:07, 6 March 2014 (GMT)

Odd Bug[edit]

I have encountered a strange bug I have not seen illustrated elsewhere. I just returned from Solsteim after an unsuccessful attempt to kill Karstaag. I took the boat back and fast travelled to the stables where I have Shadowmere waiting. When I attempt to ride him my view goes to third person. I see my character laying on the ground next to Shadowmere and can do nothing. I have not yet tried to ride other horses. Any ideas?Whoman69 (talk) 17:51, 10 June 2014 (GMT)

Shadowmere Found Directly Above The Entrance To Falkreath DB Sanctuary[edit]

So I rode Arvak in the soul cairn. Numerous days of game play after leaving that dreary place I noticed Shadowmere wasn't around when I fast traveled outside the cities. Familiar story, yes? Well after I did not find S @ Castle V, I tried advice found here and looked at the old sanctuary. Low and behold to my relief S was found on a road that takes you up and deposits you directly over the sanctuary door. My theory is, just like a follower, if left for too long Shadowmere will go back to the place of origin. Though why above the door rather than (logically) down by the black pool I have no idea. I hope this works for everyone and is just a case of hide and go seek rather than a bug.--Libbilish (talk) 07:32, 31 October 2014 (GMT)

Definitely check above DB Sanctuary! I looked everywhere for Shadowmere, and after reading all of these questions and answers I finally went above the black pool, on the road above the Sanctuary, and there he was! He has been lost for a long time because I have only been checking the pool and not the road. And yes, I lost him after I rode Arvark. — Unsigned comment by 65.131.50.132 (talk) at 15:14 on 10 December 2014 (GMT)
I lost Shadowmere the same way months ago. Fast traveled to Falkreath Sanctuary and he was on the road! Awesome, so glad he's back. — Unsigned comment by 137.118.143.30 (talk) at 01:44 on 7 January 2015 (GMT)

true gender[edit]

Shadowmere is a female correct, because Lucian was the first to own it--Cantbeonforums (talk) 14:04, 27 April 2021 (UTC)

Shadowmere disappearance fix[edit]

Shadowmere will disappear some time later after summonning Arvak, if you forget about it. The fix is simple: Just fast travel to the last location where Shadowmere is (usually it is outside Castle Volkihar. Or it can be anywhere you last travel/fast travel with it.). You will see it is not there. Then fast travel to Falkreath Dark Brotherhood Sanctuary. Shadowmere should be waiting at the roadside, just up the pond.

The front page bug section says this can be fixed by purchasing another horse and Shadowmere reappear from the pond. This info might not be accurate.

But if you forget where you last place shadowmere, without fast travel to its last location, it won't reappear at the roadside. You NEED to fast travel to its last location first before it can come back to Dark Brotherhood Sanctuary on its own. This is like some kind of failsafe from the developers. 115.134.173.159 08:54, 1 March 2023 (UTC)
