Bugs

1)Finishing No One Escapes Cidhna Mine grants the player only with one place where Forsworn are not hostile, despite the fact that player is named "friend" of them after the quest is done. In all other places, Forsworn will be hostile.

2)In my game eve nafter finishing the quests The Forsworn Conspiracy and No One Escapes Cidhna Mine, when I enter the Shrine of Talos, the whole thing with the guards repeats itself - they approach me and ask me to go to jail (this may be avoided by jsut not re-entering the Shrine of Talos)... --Arkhon 04:43, 19 November 2011 (UTC)

3)I've run into a bug where gaining a bounty in Markath (no matter the amount) after completing the escape from Cidha mine results in the guards coming up to me and responding with the dialogue inside of the Shrine of Talos. You're just stuck in an endless loop of dialogue (which is especially annoying as other guards like to attack you while you're still talking to them). And then tabbing out of the dialogue menu is met with all of the guards in the immediate area coming after you. The only way I've been able to fix this was to click on the guard, use paycrimegold in the console. It immediately takes you to the keep as if you've paid off your bounty. 12.248.24.182 22:51, 22 November 2011 (UTC)64K1 10:50, 22 November 2011 (UTC)
The paycrimegold fix doesn't work for me. I completed the original forsword quest by putting an axe through all the prisoners' faces. Later, I murdered an imperial group escorting a Stormcloak prisoner in the borders of the reach which increased my bounty. I went to Markarth to turn in another quest, but the guards go straight into the conspiracy dialogue in an endless loop (as reported above). The paycrimegold console command takes me to the outside of the mine, but the guards are still hostile (I figure this is because my bounty's high enough they'd probably still force jail time). I literally cannot go to the city without being swarmed, which is making it impossible to complete several quests. 98.206.17.95 18:05, 23 November 2011 (UTC)
- when i was confronted by the soldiers near the end, I asked them to send me to jail but when they did so, the question "what's wrong" came up again, and they proceeded to keep attacking me. (XBox) — Unsigned comment by 76.93.7.185 (talk) at 02:42 on 24 November 2011
On the Xbox I too encountered the bug where the guards would act as though everything was normal, meaning I couldn't progress. I tried waiting for an hour and for 24 hours, and neither worked. I also tried committing a crime, serving my time, and going back, but that didn't work either. After reloading the save from before talking to Eltrys in the Shrine of Talos, I found a solution that worked for me.
What I did after talking to Eltrys was to first go the the Inn, and get information about Margret (I had saved her, so I talked to her directly), and then went back to Eltrys before continuing. I believe this is what fixed it. I then found out about Weylin, and again went back to Eltrys. I proceeded to talk to Thanos, and then went straight to Nepos, and then I could continue the quest normally. — Unsigned comment by 124.170.119.73 (talk) at 09:45 on 25 November 2011
I have the exact same problem on ps3 but i cant load a save point from before i entered the shrine :( and now i can go to markarth without being stuck in an infinte loop :'( any suggestion? — Unsigned comment by 210.50.234.97 (talk) at 02:06 on 4 March 2012

() I'm on the Xbox 360 and I came across a bug similar to those above. I finished the quest entirely, but when I entered the Shrine of Talos the guards there repeated their confrontation dialogue that occurred during the quest. They proceeded to attack me, turning the entire city against me. --124.170.119.73 06:15, 29 November 2011 (UTC)

On the PC version, I used the killall command once they turned hostile. I still had guards attack me outside, but drawing and sheathing my weapons allowed me to pay off a 1000 bounty, where ever that came from, and everything seems to be fine now. --84.63.187.133 19:41, 5 December 2011 (UTC)
Went back and retried. If you use killall before they turn hostile, there's no bounty. I hope this doesn't trigger any kind of cheat flag. --84.63.187.133 19:52, 5 December 2011 (UTC)
I play it on the PS3 and after completing the quest i went back into Markarth and had a bounty of 4040 gold coins. Eventually i paid it off but when i go back into the shrine of talos the quest repeats it self and i get taking to the mine yet again. — Unsigned comment by 2.101.119.193 (talk) at 15:15 on 11 December 2011

Margret's name

The name of the woman targeted by the "Forsworn" agent early (I believe his name was Weylin) is not Margaret, but Margret. Just a little spelling variation. Anyone mind if I make the necessary name corrections in this page? — Unsigned comment by 174.60.51.49 (talk) on 22 November 2011

It's a wiki, so there's no need to ask before making changes. Especially right when now the Skyrim articles need millions of fixes. --NepheleTalk 16:39, 22 November 2011 (UTC)
I went ahead and made this change -- it was bugging me, too --Marlos 20:27, 22 November 2011

Correct NPC Names

I went ahead and changed the names of the NPCs in the Treasury House, as they were incorrectly referred to as "Tidene" and "Dannel" in the article. The descriptions I added in parentheses after their names won't be necessary when their NPC pages are up and can be linked to. -Guest — Unsigned comment by 75.18.188.118 (talk) at 21:58 on 29 November 2011

Resisting arrest in the end

Right after resisting arrest to the guards, just run to Eltris body, take everything and run away to the city without fighting with guards. If you runs away far enough and guards lost your sight, someone "new" (not agressive before) from them should start another arrest dialogue and you may go to jail normally starting next guest. Or if your Sneak skill high enough you may run and hide somewhere, wait some time until all blows over, and then show yourself.
Pros: avoids tough fight and carnage (for me on PC: only three guards inside Shrine of Talos, but when I started fighting with them another three or random ran inside from the city) and no kills (for "good" characters). — Unsigned comment by Solarisomnium (talkcontribs) at 07:49 on 30 November 2011

Correction?

Walkthrough says taking Margret's journal will result in a stolen item. I'm playing on the PC and I have the journal, its marked as a quest item, and it is also not market as stolen. Can anyone confirm if the read not take statement in this wiki applies only to consoles? — Unsigned comment by 75.80.97.155 (talk) at 09:08 on 4 December 2011

Alot of low value items become free to take after you have finished some jobs and all for people. (Eddie The Head 09:11, 4 December 2011 (UTC))
My version his dresser draw was not marked red while everything else is. All the contents of the draw including the quest item are also not marked red. Other low value items in the room are still red. — Unsigned comment by 75.80.97.155 (talk) at 12:03 on 4 December 2011
When I had gathered all the information, I returned to the Temple of Talos. In full sneak mode, I fired a poisoned arrow at the guard at the bottom of the stairs. He became suspicious (half-opened eye icon), so I ducked back out and robbed the safe at the treasury, to give him time to calm down, and was about to return to the Temple when I noticed that the quest was completed, and I had no bounty from it! Apparently just showing up inside the Temple completes the quest(???) And not being seen avoids the bounty(?) I suppose that if I want to do the next quest, Cidhna Mine, I could get myself arrested for something jailworthy later. — Unsigned comment by 118.92.5.201 (talk) at 22:03 on 20 December 2011

() Confirmed as above on PC (version 1.3.10). Searching the end table is clear, items in there not marked in red. I took the journal, and read it; when I tried to replace, told me it was a quest item and cannot be removed. Again, not marked in red in my inventory, no message of any bounty. Perhaps this should be amended in the main page walkthrough? WalB 15:10, 14 January 2012 (UTC)

Getting Attacked Bug

During a few stages of this quest I was attacked outright by the characters without any possible dialogues. In the Treasury, 2 people attacked me right away. In The Nose's house, four people attacked me. In the warrens, 1 person attacked me (not a fist fight). Despite all this, I was able to get enough evidence and get arrested when the guy in the Shrine of Talos is murdered. May not actually be a bug. — Unsigned comment by 68.107.42.155 (talk) at 07:37 on 25 December 2011

help?

At the end of The Forsworn Conspiracy, what happens if i kill the guards inside the shrine of Talos? In actuality, what would happen if i fled Makarth, and returned? — Unsigned comment by 98.210.200.191 (talk) at 03:27 on 27 December 2011

To your first question, see the last paragraph (at least as of now) of the detailed walkthrough: When returning to Eltrys at the end of the quest, you can kill the guards inside the temple with no ill effect if you kill them while successfully sneaking, as they are unwitnessed murders (or, alternatively, I believe, if you kill all the witnesses, which is done when all three guards inside the temple are dead). In my case, I killed only one of them with a bow while sneaking, so the other two did not witness it and therefore did not attack me nor did I incur a bounty. Of course, this means that you will not be arrested as is "supposed" to happen, and you will not gain access to the quest No One Escapes Cidhna Mine. I did not consider this much of a loss due to the bugs, at least in my version, associated with having all of your quest items confisticated and then lost forever if you go to jail. Bug: Dryston keeps attacking even though quest is over

I ran away from Dryston rather than brawling with him during the quest. I've now completed this quest and the rest of this sequence of quests, yet every time I run into Dryston he keeps attacking me (using the same dialogue options as in the quest). — Unsigned comment by 71.80.45.40 (talk) at 04:02 on 29 December 2011

Major quest-breaking bug.

So I figured out the hard way that trying to get the information on who "N" is from Dryston while wearing the Ebony Mail is a bad idea, and breaks the quest pretty badly. Every time I engaged in a brawl with Dryston while wearing the Ebony Mail, he got poisoned and guards came running. I never could get the information from him, and I ended up having to kill him, which resulted in me finding a note on his corpse, but the marker was still pointing to his corpse. The same thing happened during a brawl with a "Nord" who was insulting me in the city. The Ebony Mail poisoned the Nord and the Guards came running to arrest me. So yeah, if you're doing this quest, or any quest where a brawl is required (or even if you're doing a brawl), take off the Ebony Mail if you're wearing it. 173.238.137.52 20:42, 29 December 2011 (UTC)

Bug

I had already finished the quest when this bug occurred. I killed a somebody in Markath on a whim(they were carrying things I couldn't pickpocket lol), and now the dialogue from the quest occurs. If I say, "I submit, take me to jail", then the guards will automatically repeat the dialogue. Any fixes? (PS3) — Unsigned comment by 96.247.225.196 (talk) at 11:21 on 4 January 2012

Another option available: Pay Bounty

If you have the coin for it, you also have the option to pay the bounty, not go to jail, get the loot from Eltrys, but not get to watch the rebellion in the end. To do this, when the guard gives you the option to resist or go to jail, tab out of the discussion (on the PC). Then speak to the guard again. You now have the option to pay the bounty (1000) if you have it. If you do, the quest is done. You can then loot Eltrys. — Unsigned comment by 72.73.21.213 (talk) at 01:12 on 5 January 2012

False. The guards in the Reach will not give you the option to pay your bounty any other way than by serving time in Cidhna Mine. ThuumofReason 17:52, 10 February 2012 (UTC)

Straight to the end

In my case I entered in Markarth for the first time, watched the killing, and then went to roam around the city, got to the shrine of Talon, and immediately the go to jail or resist dialogue came up, effectively ending the quest, before I even knew I had it.. And no "No One Escapes Cidhna Mine" quest for me :( — Unsigned comment by 186.53.50.248 (talk) at 00:33 on 6 January 2012

Completing both Forsworn Conspiracy & Escaping Mine without incurring Bounty (PC)

This is how I did both quests on the PC, through the game I tried to achieve a 0 lifetime bounty record so completing this quest normally immediately breaks my record, I tried a few work arounds which resulted in the Markath Guard bugs, but I finally found a method which worked at least for me:

I used the console so it probably works for the pc version only.

1. Complete Forsworn Conspiracy Quest normally until the "Return back to Eltrys" objective.

2. Before entering the Shrine of Talos, I used "player.setstage ms01 100" to force complete the conspiracy quest. Following which I was teleported to the Cidhna Mines, and the next quest starts. Except that this time, the Orc guard is not around to unlock the doors and the doors are locked on both sides, typing "player.setstage ms02 0" solves the issue. (alternatively use player.moveto command to teleport to madanach)

3. Complete Cidhna Mines normally (for me I chose to kill madanach and escape alone).

4. After escaping into Markarth through the Dwemer Ruins (I snuck past and ran through), I collected my gear and the ring from Thonar (He was not hostile) and the quest is complete.

The Guards in Markath behaved normally and did not try to arrest me and received post quest dialogue normally like saying how lucky I was that Thonar cleared my name for me and townsfolk exclaiming how I escaped the mines.

However my method still resulted in the 3 guards still present in the shrine awaiting to arrest although Guards outside were normal. It bothered me slightly so I went back in. When I approached, the arrest dialogue appeared but this time even if I submitted myself they attacked me and I was not brought to the mines. To make matters worse, I cannot enter combat mode nor run out through the door. Console "kill or toggle ai combat" commands did not work for me either. I reloaded and re-entered the shrine, this time I proceeded to Assasinate them using a bow, if done quickly the 3 guards can be taken out without them noticing your presence, thus not incurring the 1000 gold bounty for witness. (I had about 50-60 sneak without perks and enhancements, I shot the guards on the side first before finishing off the one in the centre). The guards continued to behave normally outside and I managed to avoid the 1000 bounty for arrest)

Notes: while I waited 48 hours outside town to check if my actions caused any irregularities there was nothing unusual when I returned however the guards at the shrine remained dead on the floor.

If it does not bother you I highly encourage players to just do the quest normally since the 1000 bounty will be waived upon completion of the mines quest. (I am just aiming for a 0 lifetime bounty). I'm not exactly sure about the origin of the Markath guard bugs but my guess is that it starts if the player AVOIDS ARREST at the Shrine of Talos or has previously attained Thaneship in Markath. — Unsigned comment by 220.255.1.135 (talk) at 07:00 on 8 January 2012

Even if we complete the quest normally, the three guards will remain there. Even if we want to proceed to the Cidhna Mine, it is best for us to kill them after their speech and submit to guards out of the shrine. --Joshua.yathin.yu 07:50, 8 January 2012 (UTC)
As far as I know, completing the quest "normally," still results in losing quest items and not being able to recover them. That was the main reason that I chose to kill the guards inside the temple (murder leaving no witnesses also prevents receiving a bounty) and forfeiting the Cidhna Mine quest. --Jreynolds2Talk 12:02, 8 January 2012 (UTC)
Actually the quest items are returned after seeing the completion of the quest. Madanach gives you all the non-quest items back and exit to Markarth. You get the quest items after they have finished their speech and started fighting. --Joshua.yathin.yu 08:50, 9 January 2012 (UTC)
OK. That's good to know. Some of the many comments about this mess of a quest made me decide to avoid the Cidhna quest, because I had some things that I thought I would lose and couldn't recover if arrested. Maybe it was stolen items that were also quest items? --Jreynolds2Talk 10:53, 9 January 2012 (UTC)
I guess the implementation of this quest would be actually genuine jailing, with cinematics of course. So the jailing will not end until the quest ends. But of course, please make backups before doing it if you are still worried. --Joshua.yathin.yu 14:39, 9 January 2012 (UTC)

Dryston brawl game crasher (Xbox360)

After beating down Dryston, initiating the dialogue choice "Tell me who sent you, or I send you to the Gods." while having fists still raised ("weapon enabled" for unarmed mode) causes a complete console crash, forcing a system restart. I had gotten Margret's journal & read (but did not steal) Weylin's. I had already been warned off by a city guard. The crash happened three time in a row at the same point, and I tried both with my ebony armor on and completely undressed, same result. Lowering your fists (X button, same as sheathing your weapon) seems to prevent the glitch. Skychip 18:27, 9 January 2012 (UTC)

Happy End?

This is the order in which I finished this quest:

1. Came to Markath, saw murder, loot key from Margret's corpse. Guard told me to leave it.

2. Received note from Eltrys, headed to shrine.

3. Got Margret's journal (I have the key). Guard warned me again.

4. Got Weylin's Note (passed the speech challenge). Brawl outside warrens.

5. Went to Nepos, got into a fight, loot journal.

6. Return to shrine.

7. Eltrys thanked me, said something about his father, and then he gave me some gold. Quest completed.

Markath guards never attempted to arrest me (though my journal says "Eltrys is dead, and I've been framed for his murder. My only option to clear my name is to let myself be imprisoned inside Cidhna Mine and locate Madanach, the King in Rags.")--AtrumVentus 10:57, 25 January 2012 (UTC)

i have had the same issue too. i cant seem to be able to do the quest no one escapes from cidhna mine. — Unsigned comment by 2.218.114.135 (talk) at 17:49 on 5 February 2012

Note

To confirm, in the event that you do not witness the exchange between Margret and Weylin, a courier will eventually find you and hand you a note activating the quest. I was approached in Whiterun. — Unsigned comment by 12.101.24.58 (talk) at 11:11 on 10 February 2012

The event triggers when you enter Markarth for the first time; Whether or not you actually stick around for the events after triggering them is probably irrelevant to their occurrence. That being said, I kind of doubt the note will be delivered to you away from the scene. Can we get more users to confirm this?ThuumofReason 17:54, 10 February 2012 (UTC)

Eltrys dead from start

I got the note from Eltrys, but left this quest for a while, I was too caught up in others. When I finally went to the shrine to talk to him he was dead on the altar; the guards arrested me straight away even though I'd done nothing. I still got into Cidhna Mine and completed the quest, but never had the chance to play through this one. Anyone else have this problem? Thane Bug

My character became Thane of Markarth before pursuing this quest, but was still able to successfully complete it AND get the follow-up quest No One Escapes Cidhna Mine. At the end of the quest, in the shrine of Talos, I chose the "fine, I'll go quietly" option and everything proceeded smoothly. But when resisting arrest and killing the guards, I was NOT able to get the "No One Escapes" quest, even if arrested. (PS3 user)71.224.13.163 21:09, 24 February 2012 (UTC)Marcus

Legate Emmanuel Admand

Not sure if he is supposed to be in Talos' shrine with the Markarth guards when you return after the investigation but he was there for me. Is this a bug? Because he is essential I wasn't able to exit the shrine without a bounty (I resisted arrest-first time with this quest) and the whole city guard was after me as soon as I left the shrine. I don't see him mentioned anywhere in the quest info. Has anyone else had this happen? Thanks 4meridia7 00:17, 28 February 2012 (UTC)

It has been reported above. See the section on this page, "Another bug." --JRTalk E-mail 02:55, 28 February 2012 (UTC)

Notes Sentence Incorrect

It says as soon as u find out Margeret is a spy, the scene in the shrine with the guards will play out next time you enter, but that's not true and contradicts the article walkthrough. You can go back to the shrine 2 or 3 times collecting leveled gold each time you find evidence of someone. And you know she's a spy after reading her journal which is the first thing I did. It's only after you go into the treasury and talk to Thonar that the shrine spawns the guards and the scene in there. Right? I think that sentence should be removed. --D. Gemini 00:31, 12 March 2012 (UTC)

Nepos' House and All Who Dwell Within

It seems that during The Foresworn Conspiracy, if you get to the part to find evidence about Nepos, and go in his house BEFORE you bring the last piece of evidence about Thonar to the Eltrys in the Shrine of Talos, you are allowed to kill Nepos, his maid, and two servants without repercussions. You can even leave the house as they all attack you, kill them outside in the city streets, and not even the guards will care. It's only after you go to the shrine that the guards arrest you sending you to Cidhna Mine. The whole conspiracy quest pages are incomplete still. I tidied up the main article a little bit, but for instance Nepos' two servants don't have page summaries yet. But mostly I wanted to point out you can choose to leave Nepos and his maid/servants alive or decide to kill them., maybe using his lavish house as a home? I don't know if the containers are safe. I'm in the middle of the quest and it's a complicated buggy mess. I really don't know if I want to keep Nepos alive or not right now, don't know if his corpse will go away, and most importantly, I don't know if he has anything to do with future quests, which it seems he does right? Some of these questions couldn't be answered and some info wasn't on any of the pages having to do with The Foresworn Conspiracy. Maybe I'll get around to it. :P --D. Gemini 01:21, 12 March 2012 (UTC)

Guards always attack me at the end (360)

I don't know what I could have done to cause this but whenever I enter the shrine of Talos to return to Eltrys three guards approach me and enter the standard dialogue: "We warned you [...]". Everything is fine until I get to the part where I can say that "I will come quietly" or "You're not taking me alive!". So when I choose "I will come quietly" They still go through their standard dialogue. But once they say "No one" the second time they become hostile and attack. The guards outside are also hostile. Am I able to fix this?

Note: Earlier I went to the mine and figured "Hey, I can't escape... Oh, I know, I bet one of these guys has a key." Being a mage I was able to kill them without weapons. Could it be that clearing the mine glitches the quest? — Unsigned comment by 71.224.214.131 (talk) at 01:16 on 25 March 2012
