Quest[edit]

I thought this was to turn your spouse into a vampire? Vladashram 00:39, 29 June 2012 (UTC)

Yep, that's what it is. If you think the wording is confusing, feel free to edit it to improve it. The Dawnguard info on this site is still a major work in progress, so any help is welcome! ABCface 04:03, 29 June 2012 (UTC)

Spouse follower[edit]

What if your spouse is also your follower. When turned, will s/he gain vampiric abilities and will start using them in combat (Vampiric Drain)? --194.1.130.37 07:27, 29 June 2012 (UTC)

Requirements?[edit]

I've done 11-14 quests for vampires and i have a wife. i have not seen this quest ever, how does the game pick it any help explaining would be helpful. its starting to irritate me. --03:07, 1 July 2012 (UTC)Pop000100

Whose your wife it may be important.--Vukodlak 07:16, 1 July 2012 (UTC)
Borgakh the Steel Heart--Pop000100 22:17, 1 July 2012 (UTC)
Looking into the game-data, it appears that players married to Aela, Farkas, and Vilkas cannot do this quest. There are a few other conditions listed, but I'm not knowledgeable enough to determine who else is weeded out. Sorry I can't answer about Borgakh specifically, but I'll add these three NPCs to the page as ineligible spouses for now. ABCface 03:19, 3 July 2012 (UTC)
Thank you i hope they fix this.--Pop000100 22:29, 3 July 2012 (UTC)
I have the exact same problem. I made a lot of these side quests, the only thing Vingalmo does is point me to AGAIN embrace Haran of Winterhold. I need to start this quest somehow! For the record, I have the same NPC as wife (lol!) but I don't think that she's the problem. Many people have this problem and not many people choose to have an Orc as wife. — Unsigned comment by 188.25.135.19 (talk) at 11:47 on 11 August 2012
Same problem as gentlemen above. But I've tried one more thing - console commands (to be specific: 1. setstage dlc1rv06 10 2. startquest dlc1rv06 3. resetquest dlc1rv06). Didn't work as well (I'm not sure if command 2 is even a proper command, but 1 and 3 rather are). Oh, and my wife is Muiri and she's still living in her own house (I didn't buy a house yet), if it makes any difference. — Unsigned comment by 109.196.0.3 (talk) at 04:04 on 1 September 2012

Benefits?[edit]

Are there any benefits to doing this quest, or is it simply something for "player driven story" purposes? ---Gamer3427 19:21, 2 July 2012 (UTC)

Don't know yet but from an in-universe standpoint, they are now immortal and could be with you for a long while, as for benefits....well maybe they now sell blood or something. Mr.Scryer. 20:17, 2 July 2012 (UTC)
i did this with lydia and she started to use vampires servant and embrace of shadows Im planning on trying to take her weapon and shield away to get her to use vampiric drain 50.142.211.191 04:08, 6 August 2012 (UTC)

Hostile?[edit]

Have you ever had your wife attack you when you enter your home? After I turned Ria into a vampire, I go back to Proudspire Manor where I'd left her and she attacked me. Had to kill her. Anyone else had to experience this? --Shadeseven 10:57, 6 July 2012 (UTC)

Yes. Your spouse from what I can tell acts like a generic NPC towards a Vampire so they become hostile when you are proven to be a Vampire (like being seen feeding or turning into a Vampire Lord). --Anubis Priest (talk) 19:09, 8 September 2012 (EDT)
Has this been checked lately? I just transformed in front of my wife, and she didn't react at all (nor did my housecarl). --Debatra (talk) 16:41, 4 March 2013 (GMT)
I have wife Jordis (turned vampire), housecarl Valdimar, steward Eola, two daughters, and the Bard at Windstadt Manor, and none of them turn hostile. I feed on the bard (from behind) in front of everybody (because she is the only one that complains about my Dead Thralls), and nobody even says anything about it. When the seduction wears off after feeding on her two or three times, I will open the dialog and ask her to play something, and she's like "I'd be happy to." I have not tried changing into Vampire Lord form though, since I hate third person and never use it. -- Jimbo talk 16:52, 26 June 2013 (GMT)
I did some testing last night with my Windstadt household listed above. The only person that goes hostile when seeing me feeding is the Bard, and she is the only witness for the 40 gold bounty. When I turn into a Vampire Lord all of the non-vampire NPCs (Valdimar,Eola,Bard,Daughters) turn hostile, but not my vampire wife. -- Jimbo talk 14:10, 27 June 2013 (GMT)
Went back to a previous save with Jordis as non-vampire wife. She did not react to me transforming. The housecarls do not react if they are my current follower, but they do turn hostile if they are not. -- Jimbo talk 14:11, 28 June 2013 (GMT)

Moved Bug from page[edit]

"Even having a spouse and doing many quests for the vampires you still may not receive the quest." Rather vague? The quests that have to be completed are side quests, not the main quest which is implied in this bug --VergilSparda 11:55, 13 July 2012 (UTC)

Wabbajack[edit]

Has anyone tried using the wabbajack trick on a vampiric wife to see if it adds the eyes and such. We've long had to use wabbajack to properly level followers to their stats would match up to their level. Maybe doing the same would work in this case.--Vukodlak 09:12, 16 July 2012 (UTC)

Eyes do change[edit]

I married Breylna Maryon who originally had red eyes and they changed to amber, so I don't think the bug on the page applies to everyone, however she is still detected when I use "detect life", that bug I found still hasn't changed. --VergilSparda 00:45, 18 July 2012 (UTC)

Yes, agreed, eyes do change, Sylgja eyes turned dark red, and she started saying new dialog occasionally. --65.116.56.30 19:37, 14 August 2012 (UTC)

How?[edit]

Where do you have to go to be able to get quests from vampires? i'd like to turn my wife? or is it not available on the 360 — Unsigned comment by Dyllan davis (talkcontribs) at 22:51 on 23 July 2012

You need the Dawnguard DLC. It is only available on Xbox atm. The Silencer speaksTalk 21:56, 23 July 2012 (UTC)
(edit conflict) If you have Dawnguard, you can get the quest from Vingalmo by choosing the vampire side during the DLC's main questline. Players married to Aela, Farkas, or Vilkas cannot complete the quest. It hasn't been determined yet exactly when the quest can be triggered, but speaking to Vingalmo at Volkihar Keep as often as possible throughout the game is probably your best bet for now. ABCface 21:58, 23 July 2012 (UTC)

Vampire side quests[edit]

I've been doing the vampire side quests and they seem to repeat themselves. I've collected a lot of ancient vampire parts and killed lots people in DG armor, killed tons of vampires/vampire leaders. However, Vingalmo never gives me "the gift" where i have to turn my spouse into a vampire (i married Jenassa). I killed the dawnguard leaders (got that quest once), collected the 2 rings but i never got the quest to find those amulets and turn my wife into a vampire. I think it may be a bug, since I turned the Winterhold innkeeper into a vampire once and i got the same quest later. I don't know what to do. I would appreciate any help! — Unsigned comment by 188.36.9.31 (talk) at 17:32 on 8 August 2012

The exact same thing is happening to me...EXACT SAME I have done 15 plus quests. I have all jewlery am now repeating the same quests over and over. DOES ANYBODY KNOW HOW TO TRIGGER THIS QUEST?? - ESMOK KRONIK 07:06, 10 September 2012‎
I've got the exact same problem here, really really annoying! I'm getting the same quests over and over again, seems endless... Would love to know how to get the quest. Damn Vingalmo! --Rhaegar (talk) 13:27, 10 September 2012 (EDT)

It did not happen to me first time, though I use Xbox and it allows me and Me to have 2 active charcter at a time and I can't get it on the second charcter.

How To Change The Quest Information?[edit]

In Journal Entry,

<Alias=QuestGiver> has "suggested" I bestow the Gift of Harkon's Blood upon my spouse, <Alias=Spouse>. I should first render <Alias.PronounObj=Spouse> pliant through the use of Vampire's Seduction then embrace and bite <Alias.PronounObj=Spouse> on the neck. If I currently lack the power, I should forego feeding for a day as I will gain the ability. I should then return to <Alias=QuestGiver> while <Alias=Spouse> undergoes the change.

My spouse(MOD Character) became <...>,

because at the very first when I get the quest, my spouse'name in the Journal Entry is wrong, change into another MOD character's name. After I remove the wrong MOD character, the <spouse> in quest information became <...>. Is there anyway that I can change the NAME or reset the quest.

I had used the reset command, but it didn't work... — Unsigned comment by Ckstrike (talkcontribs) at 12:13 on 31 August 2012

Possibly Broken Quest[edit]

I have tried time and time again to recieve this quest, by doing what seems like a never ending pile of vampire side quests, and even reloading saves countless times, but this quest will not show up. I'm starting to thing some recent update made this quest impossible to obtain. Schiffy (talk) 04:15, 6 November 2012 (GMT)

Have you seen the list of ineligible spouses here? It's quite long, and if any of those NPCs are your spouse then you can't get the quest at all. — ABCface 04:25, 6 November 2012 (GMT)
Muiri isn't on this list. I've heard problems involving other people who chose her for the marriage quest, but I'm not sure if it's a bug or a set thing with her. Schiffy (talk) 04:40, 6 November 2012 (GMT)
It's possible that there's some other bug at work here, but one thing to keep in mind is that there are 10 quests in the list of radiant quests, and they'll be selected in random order. Each of those 10 must be either completed or rejected as not doable (e.g., if you're not married, The Gift will be rejected) before it re-randomizes those 10 quests and starts handing them out again. So if it rejected The Gift because you weren't married as the first of one cycle of radiant quests, you could conceivably need to do all 9 other quests (and get married somewhere in there), then if you're really unlucky, you'd need to do 9 more if it chose The Gift last in the next cycle. Only once you've seen the exact same radiant quest appear for a third time after getting married can you be certain that this quest isn't being selected for some reason. Fun stuff, huh? Robin Hoodtalk 19:47, 6 November 2012 (GMT)
Well, I completed the Bonds of Matrimony long before I even started the DG questline. But here's what I've been doing. As soon as I meet the requirement for a Vampire quest, I head back to Volkihar to report it. As soon as I step in, it autosaves. If I don't like the next quest I'm given, I reload that autosave. It seems odd that for the vast number of times I've done this, I haven't once seen The Gift. In fact, every time I've been directed to Vingalmo, he just gives me the New Allegiances quest, which is no longer possible for me to complete without the console, as all three potential targets have already been turned. While it's entirely possible I'm just really unlucky, I'm starting to think a bug is at work here. Schiffy (talk) 13:35, 7 November 2012 (GMT)
I have the same problem with Onmund nothing causes the quest to start not even concole commands I first hought a mod was affecting it but that isn't the case.

Weakness to fire[edit]

Can't Find Wife to Complete Quest[edit]

This was the first side quest I was given for the vampires and my wife (Mjoll the Lioness) has vanished. I can't find her in the hearthfire home I built or her default location in Riften. I can't start any of the other sidequests until I complete this one. I'm kind of at a loss now as I've spent probably 2-3 hours just searching for her in different possible locations. Has this happened to anyone else? Does anyone have any tips on where to look? I've checked a couple of my other homes that she'd lived at in the past but no luck. Any ideas would be appreciated. — Unsigned comment by 64.53.206.75 (talk) at 19:25 on 10 March 2013‎

If your on a PC you can use the console. Type "~" to open console, enter "prid 19df7" to taget Mjoll, enter "moveto player", then type "~" again to exit the console and she should appear right on top of you if she is still in the game somewhere. If she doesn't appear she may have died or something, in which case you need to do some other commands before the "moveto player" like "resurrect","disable","enable", to make sure she is active. -- Jimbo talk 16:52, 26 June 2013 (GMT)

Can you turn your wife into a vampire without this quest?[edit]

I'm trying to find some clarity on this topic, but can't find any information on the subject. It always comes back to this quest. I am torn between choosing the Dawnguard, because of the crossbow, and the Volkihar vampires specifically because of this quest. If I can manage to turn my spouse (Ysolda) without joining the Vampires, I know I can become a Vampire lord without joining them, but without finding this out, I do not want to complete any quests regarding the Dawnguard DLC. Is there any repercussions? I'm on the PS3 system, if that helps any. Thank you in advance. — Unsigned comment by 98.149.253.196 (talk) at 03:05 on 16 March 2013‎

I'm pretty sure that currently the only way to do so is with this quest, unless someones finds a bug, work around, or the feature is added on a future patch/DLC, there is no other way (and therefore, you can't side with the Dawnguard). You can always create more characters or use a well placed save/load to experience the best of both sides. The G00D Job (talk) 02:37, 24 April 2013 (GMT)
You do not need the quest all you need to do is wait for them to go to bed and bite them that will start the ques then they will wake up saying they cant remember last night and there head hurts — Unsigned comment by 24.196.194.26 (talk) at 15:03 on 25 June 2013

Muiri, not getting the The Gift Quest[edit]

I've done multiple quests and reloads and still can't get the quest. I've tried other spouses not on the list and I've received the quest after a couple of reloads. is there any sort of update to getting this quest to work with Muiri? (I'm on the XBox version so console commands aren't available for me) I've also been running around loading side quests but never get sent to Vingalmo — Unsigned comment by 99.203.22.35 (talk) at 12:51 on 16 October 2018 (UTC)
If you are having trouble with it on console, I'm sorry to say there isn't much that can be done. --AKB Talk Cont Mail 12:51, 16 October 2018 (UTC)

Wrong Spouse[edit]

I married Muiri, however when receiving the quest I was told that my spouse is Halbarn Iron Fur. I did not marry him before and I don't even know him. — Unsigned comment by 208.47.203.188 (talk) at 13:57 on 15 August 2013

Judging from the above conversations, being married to Muiri breaks this quest. Have you used console commands to trigger this quest? Because most people who marry Muiri have reported it as impossible to start. Triggering it anyway with the console may lead to oddness like this. If you didn't, I would either suggest you simply reload before this bug occurred, you try to go forward with the quest anyway by going to Muiri, or you find Halbarn Iron-Fur. I hope this helps. --AKB Talk Cont Mail 16:17, 15 August 2013 (GMT)

What Starts the Quest[edit]

For those who haven't looked in the CK: Before the quest can start, the spouse has to 1) have a common voice-type on a list of Dawnguard common voice types (so they can be made to have the appropriate responses), 2) not be one of the three marriable werewewolves in the game, and 3) not already have the "vampire" keyword. For mod-makers, the easiest way to keep a new follower/spouse off this list is to give them the 'vampire' keyword. It doesn't make them a vampire by itself (that requires changing their race), but will keep Vingalmo from thinking they're a candidate for this quest. 67.0.90.88 03:25, 5 September 2013 (GMT)

Quest marker on spouse[edit]

Will this quest place a quest marker on your spouse or not? Because with my current situation in the game it's impossible to complete this quest if it doesn't. — Unsigned comment by 24.111.118.138 (talk) at 19:55 on 29 May 2016‎

I've heard of people forgetting where they parked their car, but forgetting where you parked your spouse? Geez! :Þ But seriously, yes, this quest will put a marker on your spouse, so you'll be able to find them again. Robin Hood  (talk) 20:20, 29 May 2016 (UTC)

Forced marriage...[edit]

Will this quest be available to me if I used console commands to force my spouse to marry me (someone who cannot usually be proposed to)? It seems like lots of people have had trouble starting this quest even under normal circumstances... - Xanderen (talk) 19:19, 27 January 2017 (UTC)

As long as you are in the PlayerMarriedFaction, your spouse has one of these voicetypes, and is not a vampire or Aela, Vilkas, or Farkas. Silence is GoldenBreak the Silence 19:48, 27 January 2017 (UTC)

Vampiric Drain[edit]

Hi, no sure if it is a mod that caused it or not. I play on PS4 and married Sapphire by using a mod that's only supposed to make her available as a spouse. It works fine for me and I also got this Quest and completed it. Now I was just visiting my House Lakeview as some Bandits attacked. Sapphire was outside and took part in the fight. Since one bandit ran away she still had her fighting stance as I saw it. Her left hand was glowing red like when using Vampiric Drain. Has anyone experienced this before? I mean it could be just an undeclared part of the marriage mod but if not the point about not gaining vampiric abilities (with exception of the eyes) could be outdated. — Unsigned comment by 91.67.9.50 (talk) at 16:02 on 16 September 2018

Can you turn new spouse into vampire?[edit]

If I kill my spouse which I turned into vampire and marry someone else, can I turn the new spouse into vampire as well? — Unsigned comment by 78.27.67.16 (talk) at 23:48 on 19 October 2019

First, you can only remarry if you're playing with the Unofficial Patch. Assuming you are, I can't see any reason you wouldn't be able to complete this. I can't prove that, though. Try it and let us know! Robin Hood  (talk) 00:16, 20 October 2019 (GMT)

Avrusa Sarethi ineligible?[edit]

I've married Avrusa Sarethi in my current game and I'm having issues getting this quest to show up. I've tried rerolling Volkihar sidequests for at least 50 times. I've also tried to brute force start the quest by using the console. Can anyone verify whether or not she's eligible for vampirism? She's not on the list. 109.240.191.196 20:43, 16 January 2022 (UTC)
