Possible Vex bug with improper setstage command usage[edit]

About using setstage to get past bugged quests, be sure to do it in order, if you skip right to the completed stage you can bug out vex. Where she will not give the option to do more jobs. I´m not sure if her quests are needed for the complete restoration of the thieves guild, but just watchout. Figured this about 10 hours after using setstage on the quest. Sigh. 89.160.182.16 00:16, 6 January 2012 (UTC)

I realize this reply is a little late, but her quests are NOT needed for the complete restoration of the thieves' guild as long as Delvin's quests are still working properly. To completely deck out the thieves guild, you need the seven items for litany of larceny; completion of the main thieves guild questline; completion of 125 total random quests from Delvin OR Vex; and completion of the four "influence" quests in each of the non-Riften major cities. To unlock those four quests, which also unlock merchants, fences in the other main cities, and increase Tonilia's gold limit (I believe), you need to do 5 randomly generated quests in each of those other major cities. So having Vex broken won't block you out from finishing the thieves guild questlines, as long as Delvin still gives you numbers/fishing/whatever jobs. However, her quests are generally easier and more lucrative (compare a heist job to, say, a fishing job; if your pickpocket fails, which happens 10% of the time, the guards are after you, where heist jobs are a simple "Open this lock while no one's in the same abandoned room as you," after which you take the item and generally some gold on top of that). 99.111.84.234 02:52, 1 August 2012 (UTC)

Failed Heist Job due to NPC death...[edit]

Discussion moved from Skyrim_talk:Thieves Guild (faction)#Failed Heist Job due to NPC death...

I was assigned a Heist Job at Warmaiden's in Whiterun, and when I came to turn it in, I failed it, supposedly due to killing someone while on the job. The problem is, I didn't kill anyone. I didn't even see anyone in the building while I was there. Somewhere along the way in my game, I did receive an inheiratance from the death of Adrianne Avenicci, but I believe that was even before I took the heist job. I'm not 100% sure on that, she may have died while the quest was active, but I'm fairly sure she died before, and she was killed by vampire attack, not by me. Has anyone else had this happen, and is it possibly a bug, or are we expected to prevent the deaths of our targets from outside sources as well as refrain from killing them ourselves? Not sure if it matters, but I'm playing the game on the Xbox, and have had Dragonborn, Hearthfire, and Bloodmoon installed since I first started this character. Unfortunately, I don't have a save file from before Adrianne's death to go back to and see if that is for sure what caused the failure. KeturahIshtari (talk) 10:09, 13 September 2013 (GMT)

There seems to be some recurring problem with NPCs in Whiterun and hostility that may be related. I've had NPCs attack me for no reason, only to be killed by other NPCs in town. It's a stretch, but this may be what happened with Adrianne. She may have had the hostility bug, even though you never came across her, and gotten herself killed by a guard, causing her to die during your mission and registering it as a fail. That's my 2 cents. --Xyzzy Talk 18:46, 13 September 2013 (GMT)
That makes sense, about the hostility problem anyway, because I have noticed that the wood elf that runs the Drunken Huntsman seems to almost be bi-polar. Half the time he greets me with "Something you need, you miserable wretch?" even though I've never done anything in the game that should have lowered my rep with him or made him hostile, and if I close the convo and immediately talk to him again, he uses a nicer greeting. Maybe its something in Whiterun's water? KeturahIshtari (talk) 01:25, 14 September 2013 (GMT)
I added a note regarding the above to the article. Apparently, it is already listed in Vex's three other jobs but not in this one, so I just copied it over. ~ Psylocke 14:17, 15 September 2013 (GMT)

I confirm the bug that is added at the bottom of the page.[edit]

My character was wearing an enchanted circlet, the game removed my circlet and left the stolen one inside my inventory. Too bad I have figured it out too late now that I have to load a very old save to get it back. Beware folks from this quest as it might remove your enchanted item if the stolen item is similar. Save before talking to Vex so you can reload when she takes the wrong item. — Unsigned comment by 109.63.42.200 (talk) at 10:33 on 27 February 2014

I confirm this as well. I had just double-enchanted a gold diamond ring (renamed to" Assassin's Ring") which I had hotkey toggles for, along with the Ring of Namira. I noticed that when I went to loot bodies, the "Feed" prompt was appearing even though I hadn't toggled to Namira's Ring. I checked my hotkey menu, and my Assassin's Ring was gone. Confirmed from an old Autosave the Heist Job was also for a gold diamond ring. Mildly infuriating. Rolandito (talk) 21:14, 24 May 2018 (UTC)

Another failed quest bug[edit]

I was given a heist job at the White Phial in Windhelm, and while I was at it I undertook the task of retrieving the White Phial, which I completed before I returned to Vex. When I did so, she said I had failed because I had killed someone on the job. I didn't, but of course the proprietor of the White Phial died of natural causes at the end of that business. Not a big deal, but perhaps it should be noted that the heist job and the White Phial quest shouldn't be undertaken together. Wordmama (talk) 16:38, 8 August 2014 (GMT)

It's already noted here. —<({QT>> 16:41, 8 August 2014 (GMT)
Ah, thank you. Didn't think to look there. It might be worth repeating here, though I won't do so.Wordmama (talk) 19:01, 8 August 2014 (GMT)
This is a pretty rare case though, and the no-killing rule is not unique to the heist job. I think it suffices to note it on one page. —<({QT>> 19:12, 8 August 2014 (GMT)

Another bug[edit]

I received a job to steal a garnet from a strongbox. Two garnets spawned in the strongbox, and it refused to update the quest when I picked them up. I reloaded and tried picking them up one at a time without success. After trying a number of things, I finally reloaded again, selected the strongbox in the console and kept using 'resetinventory' until it finally respawned with only one garnet. That let the quest update as normal. --184.53.193.10 19:21, 18 October 2016 (UTC)

I have a feeling the job is conflicting with Prowler’s Profit.

Encountered the same bug. Reloaded a save outside the building (Solitude Stables), entered, and the next time i picked the lock on the strongbox, there was only a single flawless garnet. I picked it up and that updated the quest.
