NPC Code[edit]

What is her NPC code? — Unsigned comment by 118.208.18.46 (talk) at 04:31 on 28 November 2011

Hostile?[edit]

I had Uthgerd attack me upon entering The Bannerered Mare. I've had no prior interaction with her, as far as I know. Possibly a radiant story element? No items upon her person explained the attack. — Unsigned comment by 58.161.228.127 (talk) at 06:10 on 30 November 2011

Seconded, I tried to use the console commands: disable/enable as well as resetAI her but she still remains hostile. The only fix that worked was to disable the old one and placeatme another instance of her. My guess is that this is tied with the your bounty, similar to Vilkas/Farkas following you everywhere trying to arrest you if your bounty is too high. Console player can try to pay off/go to jail for your bounty and then wait/sleep for 7 days to see if her AI reset with the guards. — Unsigned comment by 203.162.41.12 (talk) at 06:56 on 19 December 2011
Same thing happened to me. I had no bounty at the time. PS3 --24.155.33.214 01:52, 28 December 2011 (UTC)
I have had a similar problem. After a bit of testing, I've found that killing and resurrecting doesn't work, nor does placing a new reference of her. The new references will also agro. Toggling the AI (tai) temporarily fixes the problem, but it causes the other NPCs in the room to run around. It's suggested that you kill her, as it's a more permanent solution with no side effects. — Unsigned comment by NewtC (talkcontribs) at 04:15 on 19 January 2012
Same thing just happened to me. I entered the Bannered Mare and she just got up and attacked me. I killed her with my bare fists and everything returned to normal. I don't appear to have a bounty, but I am having an odd session. I had a ancient dragon come to my aid, seemingly, when I was attacked by bandits. It torched the bandits and took off ignoring me even after I hit a few times. On the way back to Whiterun I was attacked by a couple of foxes, which has never happened before. Unless Uthgerd is tied to the skooma dealer I took out, I have no idea what is going on. Maybe there is a larger glitch at work. Uthgerd is hostile if I try more recent saves. I am loading my game from a different point and not going in to the Mare until later and see what happens. - Athelmaerki — Unsigned comment by Athelmaerki (talkcontribs) at 05:24 on 23 January 2012
Confirmed on PC with a bounty of 0. Loading a previous save didn't fix it. Noots 10:48, 16 April 2012 (UTC)
She attacked me as well. I was a dunmer, maybe she hates elves? What race did everyone else have?174.22.172.201 22:00, 26 April 2012 (UTC)
She came after me after I assassinated Amaund Motierre at the conclusion of the Hail Sithis quest, even though he was killed behind a closed door while in sneak mode. Both she and his bodyguard went hostile after I left the room, so I had no choice but to kill her. No bounty though, as she hit me first. SingingMom 03:44, 7 May 2012 (UTC)

() Similar situation for me. I had just killed the Emperor for the Hail Sithis quest and was returning to Motierre for my reward. She and Rexus attacked be as soon as I entered the Mare. I had just paid off my bounty in Whiterun 2 days before, but had over 1000 gold bounty in 5 other Holds (I had recently used werewolf transformations to acquire the Master Criminal achievement, and was clearing them as I traveled to each Hold). I'm guessing that they attacked because either their hostility is based on some other Hold's bounty, or it is tied in with killing the Emperor. I had not yet spoken with Motierre since killing the Emperor. --Xyzzy 03:19, 21 May 2012 (UTC)

I just found a fix to this bug, I think. I entered the Bannered Mare and she just up and attacked me. After killing her in self-defense I reloaded a previous save. Entered the bannered mare again and she went hostile, but this time I was sneaking. As soon as I lost her aggro from hiding from her, she sat back down and allowed me to approach her without trying to kill me and is no longer hostile. Mole126 20:16, 23 May 2012 (UTC)
I tried to sneak upon entering. All was fine until she noticed me, then she attacked. Oh well. No big loss. As a bonus, as soon as I stepped outside, a courier delivered a letter of inheritance and 90 gold to me from her estate. LMAO. --Xyzzy 02:48, 24 May 2012 (UTC)
she attacked me as well. i married her and she lived with me attacking me as i came home.does it have something to do about joining the empire during the civil war? — Unsigned comment by 76.104.104.11 (talk) at 14:50 on 14 July 2012
I don't think so. In my first playthrough, I sided with the Empire, and she never turned hostile. It wasn't until I killed the Emperor that she did. --XyzzyTalk 14:10, 14 July 2012 (UTC)

() I've play tested this with an assortment of low level crime free characters. The weirdness appears to start with Uthgerd but if you run outside with her in pursuit, the guards will initially ignore your both. But if you run into Dragonreach, everyone will attack your character. If you then run back outside, almost every combat capable NPC in the city will attack you. This has happened 12 times. My character never had a weapon drawn and engaged in no speech with anyone while in the city. If you run outside the city only Uthgerd will follow you and if you lose her you can re-enter the city and nobody will be hostile. Sniffles (talk) 11:40, 19 September 2012 (GMT)

I had a similar thing happen - I made her my steward, then one day came home to my suddenly-essential steward relentlessly attacking me. Sneaking in and trying to pickpocket her revealed that she thought I had pickpocketed her ("Uthgerd the Unbroken has already caught you"). So I went into Whiterun, attacked a guard, and paid my bounty. It seems to have cleared up the problem. Note: Before attacking the guard, I had no bounty in Whiterun. — Unsigned comment by 184.8.118.96 (talk) at 11:46 on 8 November 2012
I had her attack me when i entered the inn . I reloaded the save just before I killed Heimskr (the annoying guy in Whiterun who yells about Talos). I went back into the inn and she was not hostile. I tried this multiple times and she only attacked if i jad killed Heimskr. I made sure I killed him undetected from a distance and she still attacks. I even had no bounty and the guards didn't try arrest me. — Unsigned comment by 118.93.81.13 (talk) at 18:48 on 31 January 2013
Had Uthgerd attacking me as I entered Mare. Reloads, console commands like resetai, recycleactor, setdisposition, kill and then ressurect are not working. Maybe that was caused by my character being vampire, but I had no bounty, guards were not hostile. Problem was solved by loading previous save and attacking Whiterun guard. After paying bounty, she was not hostile. Same helps when NPC's turn hostile in Dragonsreach — Unsigned comment by 86.63.166.139 (talk) at 20:40 on 3 March 2013‎
Got a fix!! Select her, setav aggression 0, disable and then enable. I had the problem and was tinkering around with the console to try and fix it based on other people's advice and voila! Combined a couple things to make it work. (she was my steward and I didn't want to kill her) — Unsigned comment by 199.253.253.43 (talk) at 20:52 on 28 August 2013
This is the same fix that I documented for the occupants of Dragonsreach. In that case, it was Irileth becoming hostile and causing others inside to turn hostile as well. There seems to be some actions that you as a player can perform, such as attacking Heimskr in this case, that cause certain named NPCs in Whiterun to turn hostile. I'm suspecting that there is some sort of "secret" Whiterun bounty that can be generated when you commit crimes that aren't witnessed in the normal ways, but still get tracked somehow. --Xyzzy Talk 20:40, 30 August 2013 (GMT)

() To fix this I hit a guard and paid off my bounty. I think it's coused by the last witness killed event. — Unsigned comment by 89.253.163.177 (talk) at 11:14 on 25 December 2013‎

That's a good possibility, but it seems likely that the guards would be randomly hostile as well if the last-witness-killed script was bugged. --Xyzzy Talk 13:35, 25 December 2013 (GMT)

Her House[edit]

Just a warning that I had about half of the containers in her house reset on me causing me to lose a lot of my stuff. The containers that reset are mixed in with the ones that don't, ie. a barrel that resets next to one that doesn't. If you want to use her house I would recommend emptying all her containers and waiting a while to see which ones reset and which ones stay empty. PS3 Chanser69 05:39, 29 January 2012 (UTC)

yep :) i was just reading that last paragraph of the first section and it is very misleading. it should be changed. a wiki should be very clear on things and not leaving it up to the readers to interpret it one way or another. some containers in her house would be safe, like you said, but that's described in another article and a link to that article would also be in place here... thx 217.121.86.187 13:28, 25 April 2012 (UTC)
Details of which containers are safe belong on the house page, I added a small note that says not all containers are safe. That is enough to prompt a search on her house page, where that info will be added in time. The Silencer has spokenTalk 17:35, 25 April 2012 (UTC)

Disappearing Bug?[edit]

I had Uthgerd disappear on me while questing. Using 'moveto' to find her took me to a 4-way bugged intersection (rainbow colored cobblestone floor, no ceiling, no doors, infinite falling out of doorways until it reset you back to the middle of the intersection) suspended in nowhere, with a bearded Malborn and a dead and nude Uthgerd with a dead and nude Roggvir on top of her. Possibly relevant: Roggvir bugged out on me earlier, as well. He wasn't present for his execution, no body or anything. — Unsigned comment by 129.130.18.11 (talk) at 02:57 on 1 February 2012

Nonsensical bug description?[edit]

  • She has a tendency to go into attack mode without you noticing and refuses to move (for example, on contact with a slaughter fish). This essentially loses her without notification and you can only reload to retrieve her. On the plus side, if it is true companions are fixed at the level you are when you enter their 'zone' she will wield higher level weapons and armor (Eg. Blades) making her more durable and effective, but this negatively impacts her carrying capacity.

Sounds like the first two sentences don't belong to the rest of the paragraph. I'd remove everything but the first two sentences, but maybe somebody can make sense of it? --Kotekzot 23:21, 2 February 2012 (UTC)

Unable to brawl[edit]

Still haven't figured out what's causing this but I can trigger this bug whenever I feel like it. It may be related to the walk through Whiterun prior to entering the Bannered Mare... because if I use console commands to teleport to the inn from elsewhere in the world the error persists but if I run through Whiterun to the inn it doesn't. But then again, this is hardly the first time I've walked into Whiterun and if I use console commands to teleport to the inn after already being in the main Whiterun cell it doesn't bug out on me either. Someone more familiar with the brawl quests may have to take a look at it to isolate the exact cause... Vainamoinen -Talk -Stuff 03:28, 28 August 2015 (UTC)
I had this problem and the only way I could 'solve' it was to forget about her and do about a dozen quests. When I came by her again the dialogue option to brawl was there. Perhaps waiting a long time in a distant place could work too, but I can't guarantee 177.156.108.93 04:23, 27 December 2016 (UTC)

Uthgerd the Unbroken's Coffin[edit]

I got her as a follower as I decided to get some help with Mirluminir (the dragon at the Western Watchtower) and she unfortunately died in battle. I did not realise this until I had started the quest to go to High Hrothgar, I looked in her house, the Bannered Mare and around the watchtower. I did not realise she had does and merely thought she had disappeared. I carried on with The Horn of Jurgan Windcaller and after it I went to Whiterun to do a few miscellaneous quests. Whilst looking for Andurs' Amulet in the Hall of the Dead, I saw a coffin and upon closer inspection it was Uthgerd's. I looked inside it and found all my items given to her and her Steel Plate etc. My main point is, anyone else experience this with other followers or NPC's? If you kill someone in a Hold, does their coffin filled with their items appear in te Hall of the Dead? — Unsigned comment by 86.182.74.254 (talk) at 19:25 on 22 May 2012

Simple answer - Yes. Long answer - They have to be a resident inside the city. The Silencer has spokenTalk 18:40, 22 May 2012 (UTC)

Won't Brawl[edit]

For some reason, I can't get Uthgerd to brawl me on my latest playthrough. I have the option and she even takes my 100 gold, but she never gets up to fight. I've tried waiting, but hours pass with no result, and just attacking her earns a bounty. SonGoharotto 21:03, 7 August 2012 (UTC)

If she's sitting down, she takes several seconds to stand up and start the fight. Depends on how impatient you were.-Zydrate[][] 21:12, 7 August 2012 (UTC)
Like I said, I waited. As in, 'put down the controller and made dinner'. (I also had some delay problems brawling Mikael too, but he eventually put his dukes up.) SonGoharotto 23:59, 7 August 2012 (UTC)
Maybe try sprinting into her. This works for triggering scripted actions in other NPCs, although I've never tried sprinting into a seated NPC. --XyzzyTalk 04:35, 8 August 2012 (UTC)

Uthgerd hostile resolved[edit]

Criteria: New game. Character taken straight to Whiterun from Helgen.

  • Action A: Enter the Bannered Mare. Take 8 steps from the door towards Uthgerd. She will always attack. Tested 42 times.
  • Action B: Enter Whiterun and go directly to Dragonsreach. Speak to the Jarl. Receive a quest. Enter The Bannered Mare. Uthgerd will not attack. Tested 22 times. — Unsigned comment by Sniffles (talkcontribs) at 09:48 on 21 September 2012‎
Okay, just tested this. Khajiit character, escaped Helgen with the Imperial, straight to Whiterun and entered the Bannered Mare. Took different steps towards her and absolutely nothing happened. She's as peaceful as always. Judging from the above observations, maybe she has something against Stormcloaks? Tested that theory as well, although not with a character straight from Helgen - I used a save just after completing Liberation of Skyrim, so it can't be more Stormcloak than that. Still nothing. This is on PS3, Patch 1.6. --Krusty (talk) 08:26, 21 September 2012 (GMT)
Completely bizarre. My char had followed Stormcloak but had not joined anything. Hadn't even done Riverside quest. I'm using a PC. Can anyone cross platform check? I'm running the 1.7+ patch with Dawnguard installed. By the way, RobinHood70 has checked her script and found nothing unusual. By the way, does anyone know the script/situation where a bandit will issue a warning 'Don't come any closer' instead of just attacking? I'm seeing a lot of similarities. Sniffles (talk) 09:57, 21 September 2012 (GMT)
I tested it also. Using a very old save where I had only just escaped Helgen, I went straight to the Bannered Mare, stopping only in Riverwood to get the quest Before the Storm so I could enter Whiterun. I then went straight to Uthgerd. She was not hostile.
This is why I removed your note from the article. She is not always hostile under the conditions you specified. There is a running discussion above about her tendency to turn hostile, as well as a bug mentioning this in the article. I think you are experiencing this under a different set of circumstances. --Xyzzy Talk 13:08, 21 September 2012 (GMT)

() As Alice said, curiouser and curiouser. Okay, I've got a pre entering Whiterun save where it always happens. Is there any way I can check flags and stuff with the console to see what's under the covers? Obviously there is reason to suspect I, or my computers, are doing something strange. I realize this is a no big deal for the Wiki but it might just explain a number of bugs and supposed bugs encountered elsewhere. As an additional rat in the soup, I took that game, avoided Uthgerd, and did the Jarl's quests up to taking out the dragon. The computer locked up in the middle of the fight. I dropped to desktop and restarted the game. The comp again locked up during the fight. I dropped to desktop and repeat. I was able to kill the dragon and did the soul suck thing. Things calmed down. Then in the middle of a convo with a guard the com locked again. I rebooted the computer and the scene played cleanly without problems. Something very obscure was hung up. Sniffles (talk) 13:50, 21 September 2012 (GMT)

Oops. Re: The bug note where if you sneak and she can't see you then she calms down. Sometimes she does for me, sometimes she doesn't. Most of the time she remains hostile. If I sneak outside then return she usually attacks the moment I re-enter, sometimes attacks when I get close, and once acted normal - no attack. — Unsigned comment by Sniffles (talkcontribs) at 13:58 on 21 September 2012‎
I'm not affiliated with the Stormcloaks and she has attacked me. This is not because you're with the Stormcloaks.

Armor Note?[edit]

Should we add a note either here or somewhere else about her being a guaranteed source of a near complete set of Steel Plate armor early on in the game? Lord Eydvar Talk | Contribs 12:54, 4 October 2012 (GMT)

All NPC pages should include outfit and inventory information, not as hints to gathering loot, but just as general information. I'll go ahead and add this to her page shortly. — ABCface 15:15, 4 October 2012 (GMT)
No, as you are unable to remove her armour or weapons, besides her steel greatsword. Maybe this was just a bug I found, as she would not equip any armour I gave her also, except a helmet — Unsigned comment by 86.45.206.247 (talk) at 18:36 on 12 February 2013

Serious brawl issue?[edit]

I've had a issue similar to what many people have been experiencing. I'm able to brawl Uthgerd, but she uses her greatsword instead of her fists, and the only option is to kill her. Can someone find out what is causing this and possibly how to avoid it to be able to recruit her as a follower?99.108.100.228 22:58, 5 June 2013 (GMT)

I can't even brawl with her - the option has disappeared completely. At first I thought it was because I had installed a few new mods, but after disabling those, I still have the problem. 84.24.136.22 20:22, 28 July 2013 (GMT)

Even if you disable a mod that was in effect when a game was saved, it may still screw up further play on that savegame. The only sure way to be sure that the mod doesn't affect further playing is to go back to a save from before the mod was ever installed, which could mean restarting the game if you don't have one. --Xyzzy Talk 22:46, 28 July 2013 (GMT)
This is what I did to fix this bug on PC: open console and select Uthgerd. type in GetAV health, copy it down, then SetAV health 1, and then engage into the brawl, one swing will be enough to put her down without incurring any hostile action or her drawing her weapon on you. When done either redo command to alter her health or If you are running SBF or UFO just tell her to level up and she'll get back to normal.--68.61.41.2 10:33, 30 October 2013 (GMT)
Maybe the discussion is best suited on the forums. It is a mod. DGAny Questions? 10:57, 30 October 2013 (GMT)
This discussion is entirely suited to this talk page because they are discussing a bug. The original poster did not say anything about using mods, just 2 of the responders.
There is a similar discussion on the Fight! Fight! talk page, so this may be a bug common to any of these brawls. All of these reports may also be due to mods, since none of the people who said that they experienced it have said that they are not using any mods. If someone reports that they experienced this bug in spite of having no mods installed, we can add it to the relevant page. --Xyzzy Talk 15:47, 30 October 2013 (GMT)
If the original reporters say that they had mod(s) installed, then no subsequent additions regarding' this discussion will be added to her page. Sound about right? DGAny Questions? 16:16, 30 October 2013 (GMT)

() Pretty much. If nobody has experienced this bug without having mods installed by this point in time, it's unlikely that the issue is with the game code. --Xyzzy Talk 16:32, 30 October 2013 (GMT)

Just experienced this bug now. Even setting her Hp to 1 didn't work for me. She stood up, sat down, and every attempt to 'win' the brawl ended up with her using her greatsword, and either she died, or I did. I used EFF to force recruit her to work around it for now. Am I using mods-yes of course, lot of them, but numerous playthroughs, also with mods, and I never experienced this particualr bug before. Clearly its related to brawling system. How? no idea... — Unsigned comment by 174.4.12.181 (talk) at 03:39 on 21 January 2015 (GMT)
I'm having this problem too. I go o the tavern to recruit her and we begin the brawl, and mid fight she says something like "so want a real fight do you?" and draws her greatsword and either dies or if I drop her to a knee and put down my fist or put down my fist without ever striking her, the fight ends, but the options stay the same. I haven't tried with other brawls yet but I hope I've not broken the brawl system with a quest mod that makes certain npc's non-essential, ie. thieves guild, high-king, etc. — Unsigned comment by 24.47.0.38 (talk) at 12:31 on 4 February 2015 (GMT)

10-Apr-2022: Had the same issue, NO MODS INSTALLED. I took her health down quite a bit, then casted double-cast Calm -> she sat down. After it wore off I challenged her again (did not wait for her health to go up fully again.) Took the brawl slow, one punch at a time - this time she kept fighting with her fists, and after last hit I won. I hope this helps you all.

bug with later unofficial patches[edit]

"Uthgerd is initially equipped with a two-handed weapon, even though she is in the CombatWarrior1H class.

PC Only This issue has been addressed by version 1.2 of the Unofficial Skyrim Patch; it changes her class to CombatWarrior2H to match her weapon and combat style."

actually, I'm using 1.3 of the main unofficial patch, along with the latest unofficial patches for all the expansion packs, loaded in the correct order, from a new game. Uthgerd was a 1h/shield model when I met her. Thus, this fix must have been overwritten by one of the later patches for the expansion packs. I'm running all the latest "Unofficial" patches, and she uses a two-handed sword. Wandering Blades member[edit]

I recruited Uthgerd into the Blades as the first member. Many many days later while traveling out in the wilds, I found Uthgerd wandering the road toward Rorikstead. Idk why because she should be staying at Sky Haven Temple now. So I dismissed Lydia, told Uthgerd to follow me and brought her back to Sky Haven, then dismissed her. She then wanders out of Sky Haven and stands in front of the stone head that lifted up so we could get inside originally, instead of staying inside the actual temple itself. Anyone else having this issue with Uthgerd being recruited into the Blades where she wanders away from the temple? I hope I didn't pick a bad follower for Blades membership. 71.171.112.74 10:10, 20 October 2013 (GMT)

Is a picture of Uthgerd's coffin really needed for this page? Wouldn't a picture of Uthgerd fighting as a follower be a better choice?MeleeCyrus (talk) 10:41, 4 January 2014 (GMT)

It certainly would. I'm uncertain if the coffins and urns are unique to NPCs (their placement anyway), because if they are they should be added. If they are just random then this can be removed. Silence is GoldenBreak the Silence 02:14, 5 January 2014 (GMT)

What is her age?[edit]

Anyone know? --99.24.181.162 22:54, 21 August 2014 (GMT)

The game has no concept of age other than adult or child. Unless someone says something in their dialogue (which is rare, and I don't think ever gets more specific than something like "old") there's no way to know. Robin Hood  (talk) 23:21, 21 August 2014 (GMT)

Uthgerd as steward likes to wander[edit]

I've made Uthgerd steward of Heljarchen Hall, which is my main house outfitted with a children's bedroom, armory and storage. Although I'm used to see Gregor and/or Valdimar leave Lakeview Manor at midnight and see them walk all the way back to their real houses, I also spotted Uthgerd wandering back along the same road frequently. Wondering where the hell she came from, I have been trying to catch her in the act of walking away.

Today I got lucky, I actually saw her walk away from Heljarchen Hall for the first time, so I decided to follow her. I found her passing through Loreius Farm at 2:00 at night on Tirdas, and she walked all the way to the road in front of the Honningbrew Meadery at 6:00. Then she abruptly turns around and starts making her way back. Since I'm on PS3, I cannot check her schedule, but I have a feeling she's trying to walk back to her own house to sleep, as I've recruited her as a steward for Heljarchen Hall *after* I've build the children's bedroom (which conflicts with the steward bed). It's been noted that stewards who are unable to sleep in their own bed end up sitting in the chair next to the first master bedroom, but I've never, once, seen her sit there.

Equipment Query?[edit]

Has anyone else experienced any problems with Uthgerd as a Follower: specifically, whatever equipment I give her, no matter how much higher in quality it is than her own default gear, she will never equip it herself. Even when I obtained Orcish Heavy Armor and gave it to her she would never actually equip it. I have never experienced this with any other Followers, so I assume it's some kind of glitch with Uthgerd herself. Just wondering of it's only me or an already-known issue.--Feminous (talk) 12:27, 30 September 2015 (UTC)

Make sure you've tried giving her something with a better *base armor rating* than her default gear, not just something that's better because you've tempered it. Followers don't recognize tempering. An Orcish breastplate has the same base rating as her defualt gear, so she probably wouldn't consider it "better" and equip it. 69.250.248.247 18:11, 1 October 2015 (UTC)
Uthgerd has unusually high-quality default gear. Most followers come with default gear with very low base armor ratings, and/or gear that they have the wrong skill for. --Morrolan (talk) 12:48, 7 October 2015 (UTC)
