[edit] NPC Code

What is her NPC code? — Unsigned comment by 118.208.18.46 (talk) at 04:31 on 28 November 2011

[edit] Hostile?

I had Uthgerd attack me upon entering The Bannerered Mare. I've had no prior interaction with her, as far as I know. Possibly a radiant story element? No items upon her person explained the attack. — Unsigned comment by 58.161.228.127 (talk) at 06:10 on 30 November 2011

Seconded, I tried to use the console commands: disable/enable as well as resetAI her but she still remains hostile. The only fix that worked was to disable the old one and placeatme another instance of her. My guess is that this is tied with the your bounty, similar to Vilkas/Farkas following you everywhere trying to arrest you if your bounty is too high. Console player can try to pay off/go to jail for your bounty and then wait/sleep for 7 days to see if her AI reset with the guards. — Unsigned comment by 203.162.41.12 (talk) at 06:56 on 19 December 2011
Same thing happened to me. I had no bounty at the time. PS3 --24.155.33.214 01:52, 28 December 2011 (UTC)
I have had a similar problem. After a bit of testing, I've found that killing and resurrecting doesn't work, nor does placing a new reference of her. The new references will also agro. Toggling the AI (tai) temporarily fixes the problem, but it causes the other NPCs in the room to run around. It's suggested that you kill her, as it's a more permanent solution with no side effects. — Unsigned comment by NewtC (talkcontribs) at 04:15 on 19 January 2012
Same thing just happened to me. I entered the Bannered Mare and she just got up and attacked me. I killed her with my bare fists and everything returned to normal. I don't appear to have a bounty, but I am having an odd session. I had a ancient dragon come to my aid, seemingly, when I was attacked by bandits. It torched the bandits and took off ignoring me even after I hit a few times. On the way back to Whiterun I was attacked by a couple of foxes, which has never happened before. Unless Uthgerd is tied to the skooma dealer I took out, I have no idea what is going on. Maybe there is a larger glitch at work. Uthgerd is hostile if I try more recent saves. I am loading my game from a different point and not going in to the Mare until later and see what happens. - Athelmaerki — Unsigned comment by Athelmaerki (talkcontribs) at 05:24 on 23 January 2012
Confirmed on PC with a bounty of 0. Loading a previous save didn't fix it. Noots 10:48, 16 April 2012 (UTC)
She attacked me as well. I was a dunmer, maybe she hates elves? What race did everyone else have?174.22.172.201 22:00, 26 April 2012 (UTC)
She came after me after I assassinated Amaund Motierre at the conclusion of the Hail Sithis quest, even though he was killed behind a closed door while in sneak mode. Both she and his bodyguard went hostile after I left the room, so I had no choice but to kill her. No bounty though, as she hit me first. SingingMom 03:44, 7 May 2012 (UTC)

() Similar situation for me. I had just killed the Emperor for the Hail Sithis quest and was returning to Motierre for my reward. She and Rexus attacked be as soon as I entered the Mare. I had just paid off my bounty in Whiterun 2 days before, but had over 1000 gold bounty in 5 other Holds (I had recently used werewolf transformations to acquire the Master Criminal achievement, and was clearing them as I traveled to each Hold). I'm guessing that they attacked because either their hostility is based on some other Hold's bounty, or it is tied in with killing the Emperor. I had not yet spoken with Motierre since killing the Emperor. --Xyzzy 03:19, 21 May 2012 (UTC)

I just found a fix to this bug, I think. I entered the Bannered Mare and she just up and attacked me. After killing her in self-defense I reloaded a previous save. Entered the bannered mare again and she went hostile, but this time I was sneaking. As soon as I lost her aggro from hiding from her, she sat back down and allowed me to approach her without trying to kill me and is no longer hostile. Mole126 20:16, 23 May 2012 (UTC)
I tried to sneak upon entering. All was fine until she noticed me, then she attacked. Oh well. No big loss. As a bonus, as soon as I stepped outside, a courier delivered a letter of inheritance and 90 gold to me from her estate. LMAO. --Xyzzy 02:48, 24 May 2012 (UTC)
she attacked me as well. i married her and she lived with me attacking me as i came home.does it have something to do about joining the empire during the civil war? — Unsigned comment by 76.104.104.11 (talk) at 14:50 on 14 July 2012
I don't think so. In my first playthrough, I sided with the Empire, and she never turned hostile. It wasn't until I killed the Emperor that she did. --XyzzyTalk 14:10, 14 July 2012 (UTC)

() I've play tested this with an assortment of low level crime free characters. The weirdness appears to start with Uthgerd but if you run outside with her in pursuit, the guards will initially ignore your both. But if you run into Dragonreach, everyone will attack your character. If you then run back outside, almost every combat capable NPC in the city will attack you. This has happened 12 times. My character never had a weapon drawn and engaged in no speech with anyone while in the city. If you run outside the city only Uthgerd will follow you and if you lose her you can re-enter the city and nobody will be hostile. Sniffles (talk) 11:40, 19 September 2012 (GMT)

I had a similar thing happen - I made her my steward, then one day came home to my suddenly-essential steward relentlessly attacking me. Sneaking in and trying to pickpocket her revealed that she thought I had pickpocketed her ("Uthgerd the Unbroken has already caught you"). So I went into Whiterun, attacked a guard, and paid my bounty. It seems to have cleared up the problem. Note: Before attacking the guard, I had no bounty in Whiterun. — Unsigned comment by 184.8.118.96 (talk) at 11:46 on 8 November 2012
I had her attack me when i entered the inn . I reloaded the save just before I killed Heimskr (the annoying guy in Whiterun who yells about Talos). I went back into the inn and she was not hostile. I tried this multiple times and she only attacked if i jad killed Heimskr. I made sure I killed him undetected from a distance and she still attacks. I even had no bounty and the guards didn't try arrest me. — Unsigned comment by 118.93.81.13 (talk) at 18:48 on 31 January 2013
Had Uthgerd attacking me as I entered Mare. Reloads, console commands like resetai, recycleactor, setdisposition, kill and then ressurect are not working. Maybe that was caused by my character being vampire, but I had no bounty, guards were not hostile. Problem was solved by loading previous save and attacking Whiterun guard. After paying bounty, she was not hostile. Same helps when NPC's turn hostile in Dragonsreach — Unsigned comment by 86.63.166.139 (talk) at 20:40 on 3 March 2013‎

[edit] Her House

Just a warning that I had about half of the containers in her house reset on me causing me to lose a lot of my stuff. The containers that reset are mixed in with the ones that don't, ie. a barrel that resets next to one that doesn't. If you want to use her house I would recommend emptying all her containers and waiting a while to see which ones reset and which ones stay empty. PS3 Chanser69 05:39, 29 January 2012 (UTC)

yep :) i was just reading that last paragraph of the first section and it is very misleading. it should be changed. a wiki should be very clear on things and not leaving it up to the readers to interpret it one way or another. some containers in her house would be safe, like you said, but that's described in another article and a link to that article would also be in place here... thx 217.121.86.187 13:28, 25 April 2012 (UTC)
Details of which containers are safe belong on the house page, I added a small note that says not all containers are safe. That is enough to prompt a search on her house page, where that info will be added in time. The Silencer has spokenTalk 17:35, 25 April 2012 (UTC)

[edit] Disappearing Bug?

I had Uthgerd disappear on me while questing. Using 'moveto' to find her took me to a 4-way bugged intersection (rainbow colored cobblestone floor, no ceiling, no doors, infinite falling out of doorways until it reset you back to the middle of the intersection) suspended in nowhere, with a bearded Malborn and a dead and nude Uthgerd with a dead and nude Roggvir on top of her. Possibly relevant: Roggvir bugged out on me earlier, as well. He wasn't present for his execution, no body or anything. — Unsigned comment by 129.130.18.11 (talk) at 02:57 on 1 February 2012

[edit] Nonsensical bug description?

  • She has a tendency to go into attack mode without you noticing and refuses to move (for example, on contact with a slaughter fish). This essentially loses her without notification and you can only reload to retrieve her. On the plus side, if it is true companions are fixed at the level you are when you enter their 'zone' she will wield higher level weapons and armor (Eg. Blades) making her more durable and effective, but this negatively impacts her carrying capacity.

Sounds like the first two sentences don't belong to the rest of the paragraph. I'd remove everything but the first two sentences, but maybe somebody can make sense of it? --Kotekzot 23:21, 2 February 2012 (UTC)

[edit] Unable to brawl

When I talk to Uthgerd, only two Altoona come up: You must really love to fight. and Sounds like you've got a grudge. Is there something I have done or is there something I haven't done to be able to brawl? — Unsigned comment by 99.104.123.12 (talk) at 02:45 on 1 March 2012

I have the same problem I'm assuming that it must be a mod that is causing the problem — Unsigned comment by 96.3.176.247 (talk) at 01:57 on 28 March 2013‎

[edit] Uthgerd the Unbroken's Coffin

I got her as a follower as I decided to get some help with Mirluminir (the dragon at the Western Watchtower) and she unfortunately died in battle. I did not realise this until I had started the quest to go to High Hrothgar, I looked in her house, the Bannered Mare and around the watchtower. I did not realise she had does and merely thought she had disappeared. I carried on with The Horn of Jurgan Windcaller and after it I went to Whiterun to do a few miscellaneous quests. Whilst looking for Andurs' Amulet in the Hall of the Dead, I saw a coffin and upon closer inspection it was Uthgerd's. I looked inside it and found all my items given to her and her Steel Plate etc. My main point is, anyone else experience this with other followers or NPC's? If you kill someone in a Hold, does their coffin filled with their items appear in te Hall of the Dead? — Unsigned comment by 86.182.74.254 (talk) at 19:25 on 22 May 2012

Simple answer - Yes. Long answer - They have to be a resident inside the city. The Silencer has spokenTalk 18:40, 22 May 2012 (UTC)

[edit] Un-Marriable

PlayStation Note Even while wearing the Amulet of Mara, and after beating her in a brawl, she can be my follower but there isn't any speech to ask her to marry you. Anyone else have this problem? --Cosmo619 23:41, 24 May 2012 (UTC)

Have you spoken to Maramal at the Temple of Mara yet? Kitkat TalkContribE-mail 23:50, 24 May 2012 (UTC)

[edit] Won't Brawl

For some reason, I can't get Uthgerd to brawl me on my latest playthrough. I have the option and she even takes my 100 gold, but she never gets up to fight. I've tried waiting, but hours pass with no result, and just attacking her earns a bounty. SonGoharotto 21:03, 7 August 2012 (UTC)

If she's sitting down, she takes several seconds to stand up and start the fight. Depends on how impatient you were.-Zydrate[][] 21:12, 7 August 2012 (UTC)
Like I said, I waited. As in, 'put down the controller and made dinner'. (I also had some delay problems brawling Mikael too, but he eventually put his dukes up.) SonGoharotto 23:59, 7 August 2012 (UTC)
Maybe try sprinting into her. This works for triggering scripted actions in other NPCs, although I've never tried sprinting into a seated NPC. --XyzzyTalk 04:35, 8 August 2012 (UTC)
Wow, really? Lawl. I spent a few in-game days doing quests and came back later; she got up right away. I don't know what the problem was, but it apparently fixed itself. SonGoharotto 12:27, 8 August 2012 (UTC)
Gotta love it when that happens (When the game fixes itself).-Zydrate[][] 21:46, 8 August 2012 (UTC)

[edit] Uthgerd hostile resolved

Criteria: New game. Character taken straight to Whiterun from Helgen.

  • Action A: Enter the Bannered Mare. Take 8 steps from the door towards Uthgerd. She will always attack. Tested 42 times.
  • Action B: Enter Whiterun and go directly to Dragonsreach. Speak to the Jarl. Receive a quest. Enter The Bannered Mare. Uthgerd will not attack. Tested 22 times. — Unsigned comment by Sniffles (talkcontribs) at 09:48 on 21 September 2012‎
Okay, just tested this. Khajiit character, escaped Helgen with the Imperial, straight to Whiterun and entered the Bannered Mare. Took different steps towards her and absolutely nothing happened. She's as peaceful as always. Judging from the above observations, maybe she has something against Stormcloaks? Tested that theory as well, although not with a character straight from Helgen - I used a save just after completing Liberation of Skyrim, so it can't be more Stormcloak than that. Still nothing. This is on PS3, Patch 1.6. --Krusty (talk) 08:26, 21 September 2012 (GMT)
Completely bizarre. My char had followed Stormcloak but had not joined anything. Hadn't even done Riverside quest. I'm using a PC. Can anyone cross platform check? I'm running the 1.7+ patch with Dawnguard installed. By the way, RobinHood70 has checked her script and found nothing unusual. By the way, does anyone know the script/situation where a bandit will issue a warning 'Don't come any closer' instead of just attacking? I'm seeing a lot of similarities. Sniffles (talk) 09:57, 21 September 2012 (GMT)
I tested it also. Using a very old save where I had only just escaped Helgen, I went straight to the Bannered Mare, stopping only in Riverwood to get the quest Before the Storm so I could enter Whiterun. I then went straight to Uthgerd. She was not hostile.
This is why I removed your note from the article. She is not always hostile under the conditions you specified. There is a running discussion above about her tendency to turn hostile, as well as a bug mentioning this in the article. I think you are experiencing this under a different set of circumstances. --Xyzzy Talk 13:08, 21 September 2012 (GMT)

As Alice said, curiouser and curiouser. Okay, I've got a pre entering Whiterun save where it always happens. Is there any way I can check flags and stuff with the console to see what's under the covers? Obviously there is reason to suspect I, or my computers, are doing something strange. I realize this is a no big deal for the Wiki but it might just explain a number of bugs and supposed bugs encountered elsewhere. As an additional rat in the soup, I took that game, avoided Uthgerd, and did the Jarl's quests up to taking out the dragon. The computer locked up in the middle of the fight. I dropped to desktop and restarted the game. The comp again locked up during the fight. I dropped to desktop and repeat. I was able to kill the dragon and did the soul suck thing. Things calmed down. Then in the middle of a convo with a guard the com locked again. I rebooted the computer and the scene played cleanly without problems. Something very obscure was hung up. Sniffles (talk) 13:50, 21 September 2012 (GMT)

Oops. Re: The bug note where if you sneak and she can't see you then she calms down. Sometimes she does for me, sometimes she doesn't. Most of the time she remains hostile. If I sneak outside then return she usually attacks the moment I re-enter, sometimes attacks when I get close, and once acted normal - no attack. — Unsigned comment by Sniffles (talkcontribs) at 13:58 on 21 September 2012‎
I'm not affiliated with the Stormcloaks and she has attacked me. This is not because you're with the Stormcloaks.

[edit] Armor Note?

Should we add a note either here or somewhere else about her being a guaranteed source of a near complete set of Steel Plate armor early on in the game? Lord Eydvar Talk | Contribs 12:54, 4 October 2012 (GMT)

All NPC pages should include outfit and inventory information, not as hints to gathering loot, but just as general information. I'll go ahead and add this to her page shortly. — ABCface 15:15, 4 October 2012 (GMT)
No, as you are unable to remove her armour or weapons, besides her steel greatsword. Maybe this was just a bug I found, as she would not equip any armour I gave her also, except a helmet — Unsigned comment by 86.45.206.247 (talk) at 18:36 on 12 February 2013
