Tamriel:Aldmer

The Aldmer were the original proto-mer who inhabited the coasts of Tamriel. The race slowly evolved into the various present day Mer. The conservative peoples that stayed in Summerset Isle became the Altmer. The individuals who broke off from tradition and explored the rest of Tamriel variously became the Falmer, Bosmer, Orsimer, Dwemer, Chimer, Ayleids, Dunmer, and Bretons (from interbreeding with Nedes).

Certain sources speak of a homeland continent known as Aldmeris, but later studies have proven that this "lost land" is not a physical place but rather a construct of the merethic races' collective memory of their formative period in history- known as the Dawn Era. ^{[verification needed -- This was added by an anonymous editor with no source and I can't find anything that confirms it]}

As a race, the Aldmer probably resembled the present day Altmer, as the Altmer intentionally selectively bred as to resemble their Aldmer ancestors.
