Mer, meaning elf, is used to refer to any of the 'elf' races in Tamriel, such as the Dunmer, Altmer, and Bosmer. Besides these three races, the Orcs or Orsimer are also said to be descended from Mer, though their particular branch split from the other groups much earlier (For more information about Orsimer ancestry, consult The True Nature of Orcs). A few Mer races have also disappeared or otherwise died out, including the Chimer and Falmer (For more information about what happened to these races, see their race page). Some sources also link the Dwemer to these other races, but the connection between the Dwemer and the other types of Mer is suspect.
