Zurin Arctus or the Underking was the Imperial Battlemage of Tiber Septim. Zurin Arctus sacrificed his heart (life force) to be infused into a gem called Mantella, and later to be implanted into the Numidium to make it fully operational. The Numidium proved very effective in bringing down the mighty Aldmeri Dominion and conquering Tamriel in 2E 896. It is speculated in the West, that Zurin Arctus brokered the agreement between Tiber Septim and Vivec about the fate of Morrowind.

During the reign of Uriel Septim VII, both the Numidium and the Totem were found in the Illiac Bay region. This nearly set off a civil war amongst the dozens of independant city-states in the region, beginning with the murder of the King of Daggerfall. Ultimately, an anonymous hero traveled to the plane of Aetherius where the Mantella was located, and returned to Nirn with it to activate Numidium. As soon as the golem became active, the Underking arrived, destroyed the golem, retrieved his heart from the Mantella, and finally passed into true death (this event is known as The Warp in the West).
