An esd file is a data only version of an esp. I.e., it's an esp without the TES3 header record. The file type was first defined by TESAME and is used by it and a few other mod editing programs for transferring data between mods. However, it doesn't provide substantial advantages over the esp file type, and so has not been widely accepted.
