UESPWiki:Categories
The UESPWiki – Your source for The Elder Scrolls since 1995
Categories is one of the ways we organize the articles on the site so that our readers can find information they need quickly. The category system we use is hierarchical in a folder tree like setup, with Category:Categories on the top. Articles are placed in the best category possible, and occasionally multiple categories if the circumstances call for it.
[edit] How to use Categories
To place an article in a category, you simply insert a link to the category on the top of the page: . You can also specify an additional sortkey parameter that dictates where the page will appear, alphabetically, within the category. This is achieved by using the following markup: . Note that if this is omitted, the page will alphabetize under the page's title. This unfortunately includes the namespace, thus all pages in the Oblivion namespace will end up alphabetized under 'O', Morrowind pages end up under 'M', etc. This is generally not the desired behavior. One way to avoid this is to specify by using the PAGENAME variable. Thus, you'd type: . This will automatically alphabetize by the name of the page, minus the namespace. This is good for templates which will be used on multiple pages, or for quickly copy/pasting a category definition onto multiple pages.
If a page has multiple categories, you can simplify the category sorting by declaring a DEFAULTSORT variable. Thus if a page is named Oblivion:Altmer, you would have a line that says , which would cause the page to be automatically sorted under "Altmer" in any category used on the page. This can also be used with the PAGENAME variable, in the following syntax: . Note that declaring a sortkey in the above method will override a DEFAULTSORT declaration, in case you want to have the page sorted under a different letter in some categories.
[edit] Current Category System
The current categories can all be viewed at Category Tree, organized into a tree-like structure. An alphabetical listing is also available at Special:Categories.
Before creating a new category, check whether or not there is already an appropriate category.
