UESPWiki:Oblivion Places Redesign Project/Map Overlay
The UESPWiki – Your source for The Elder Scrolls since 1995
The png image shown at right is an example of the map overlays that can be automatically generated. This example is for Wenyandawik Edesel, and can be compared to the fully assembled map Image:OB-Map-Wenyandawik02.jpg.
The overlay contains three parts.
- On the left side, above the line, are the symbols showing locations of all treasure, enemies, switches, traps, and unusual gates/doors.
- On the left side, below the line, are the letters used as labels for the important symbols. The labels have been separated out like this so that it is easier to customize them (change a label, reposition, etc.)
- On the right side is the legend for this map (this legend is no longer being used; a standard Image:OB-Map-Key.png legend is being shown on all pages instead).
The image is scaled so it can be directly superimposed on maps generated from screenshots of the in-game maps, and is oriented with north up. The black dots in both the top and bottom halves show the locations of the load doors.
The overlays are now being generated as EPS format images (instead of the PNG format shown here), but with otherwise identical content. The EPS format images make it easier to scale the images to whatever size is necessary to match your screenshots, and have a transparent background that easier to use for an overlay.
To use the overlay:
- Assemble the actual map from in-game screenshots.
- For areas of a dungeon that are underwater, I've been creating a new photoshop layer, coloring the water areas in with pure blue, and setting the layer's opacity to 15%. (For example, Image:OB-Map-AnvilCastleSmugglersCave.jpg).
- Open the EPS format overlay file
- If you created your screenshots at 1024x768 resolution, import the EPS image at 437 pixels/inch resolution
- Use the RGB color setting
- Copy and paste the top half of the overlay file into a new layer on top of the map image.
- Reposition the new layer so that the black dots are superimposed upon the load doors (i.e., the doors shown with door icons on the in-game maps).
- Delete the black dots
- Copy and paste the bottom half of the overlay file into another new layer.
- Again, reposition the new layer so that the black dots are superimposed on the black dots from the first layer.
- Delete the black dots
- Adjust any individual labels as appropriate. Often the labels need to be repositioned to put them where they can be easily seen or to make it more obvious which label goes with which item.
- Save the completed image to a jpg file and upload, using the same name as the existing map for that location.
[edit] Available Overlays
Each of the following links is to a .zip file that contains all the EPS format overlays for that location. The wiki software automatically posts a warning on all zip files, stating "This file may contain malicious code, by executing it your system may be compromised." Basically, the wiki software cannot verify what is inside the zip file so it is being cautious. If you are worried about the warning you can first doublecheck under the file history that the file was uploaded by Nephele. Second, before unpacking the zip file verify that the only contents are EPS files (which cannot contain malicious code).
Some of the following zip files do not contain a complete set of overlays for the associated location. Any missing overlays are ones that have been done (or will be done) by Nephele.
