UESPWiki:Style Guide/NPC Layout
The UESPWiki – Your source for The Elder Scrolls since 1995
This page sets out the standard layout for NPC articles. Please use this format when creating new NPC articles.
[edit] Templates
A template, Template:NPC Summary, has been created for use on all Morrowind, Tribunal, Bloodmoon, and Oblivion NPC pages. This template is just starting to be introduced onto all the NPC pages, so you are still likely to find many NPC pages that are still formatted according to previous recommendations. In particular, this template replaces all previously used tags (trails, categories, etc.)
For people interested in helping to convert Oblivion NPC pages to the new template, most of the data has been automatically generated and dumped into a sandbox. Look through the subpages there to find the NPC you are interested in, and follow the instructions there for details on how to cut and paste entries from the sandbox to the NPC page.
The only existing documentation on the template is provided on the template page. To see examples of it being used, check some of the following pages: Oblivion:Rohssan, Oblivion:Gundalas, Morrowind:Lorbumol gro-Aglakh.
[edit] First Line in a NPC's profile
Here is an example of what the first sentence of an NPC's Page should look like: Oblivion:Winson.
- Note it includes the following:
- Name
- Gender
- Race
- These are, if possible, the minimum to include in the first sentence. If you are unclear as to a NPC's race, go here, User:TheRealLurlock/Sandbox and search for the NPC's name.
- Additionally, other info to include would be:
- Occupation
- Location - at least which city (if they're in a city)
- Services
[edit] Other Info
Some other information to add to a NPCs page (depending upon relevance) includes:
- Quests. If the NPC starts any quests, these should be listed in a section titled "==Starts Quests==". If the NPC is involved in any other quests, they should be listed in a section titled "==Related Quests==". These sections do not need to exist if the NPC is not involved in any quests.
- Names (and links) for any other NPCs who are related (husband, sister, etc), or with whom they frequently interact
- Where and when to find the NPC. Many NPCs have schedules that dictate, for example, that they always have dinner at a particular tavern. Some NPCs travel to other cities on certain days.
- Interesting dialogue specific to the NPC. If their dialogue contains easter eggs or is particularly noteworthy it can be quoted.
- Equipment or other loot that they are guaranteed to carry, especially if it is enchanted or rare.
- Equipment or other loot that is guaranteed to be found in their house.
