Containers are a very common sight through Oblivion travels. Most of which are immobile, for obvious reasons, although few can be moved, although still to not much avail. Creatures and NPC's can also be used technically, although it is generally useless due to the fact that unless the corpse is outside it can not leave it's cell. Almost all containers are cleared and re-stocked every 72-73 hours the character has been absent from the cell in which it resides, due to a Cell Reset. (The article on Dungeons - Loot provides a more detailed explanation of the timing for the cell reset trigger.) This makes storing your items in crates you are not sure of a dangerous gamble.
Through activating said containers of the non NPC kind, you may either place into any non-quest items from your inventory, or retrive any item that may be inside the box/crate/ect. The main use of any container is either to store away your stash of items in a house or such, or keep track of small items such as rings or keys. Apart from things easly lost, throwing them on the ground is just as easy, as these items on the ground will only get deleted on VERY rare occasions, as the Cell Reset does not affect existing items in a cell.
Note: Unlike Morrowind, containers in Oblivion do not have a weight limit, thus is theory being able to store as many items as there exists in Oblivion.
- Some containers are locked, thus requiring you to pick said lock with a spell or Lockpick.
- There is a glitch with containers which causes Items to Disappear from them, having to do with a large ammount of items being stored at one time. Saving and reloading can clear the glitch or just taking all the items back out makes the previously gone items show up again.

[edit] Special Containers
There is an Enchanted Chest located in the Archmage's Tower, which is given to you to use as part of your promotion to the rank of Archmage in the Mages Guild. This chest will multiply certain ingredients that you place in it.
[edit] Non-Player Character Containers
Most NPC's have some sort of item on their corpse, which once killed can be used as a container, however usless this may be. Corpses are reset during the Cell Reset, thus proving to be very futile containers. An alive NPC's inventory can only be accessed during Pickpocketing them, un-aware or unconcious. This method only allows you to take some items, and enabling you to reverse pickpocket zero weight items.
There are a few exceptions to the rule of corpses being reset, more commonly those used in quest's... Shadowmere *Horse from Dark Brotherhood* is very commonly used for storage, as once KO'ing it, you may freely loot it's corpse and store many items, before it wakes up. This has been known to cause problems if someone see's you though, so to be safe stay out of NPC's sight. Also two Slaughterfish at Miscarcand can be found to be "safe" although to little avail.
[edit] Safe Containers
Few containers in Cyrodill are safe containers and are not reset. Items placed in a safe container will remain there.
There are a few types of containers that are always safe, no matter where you find them:
- Clams. There are 321 clams in the game, found underwater in various bodies of water.
- Torn Sacks of Grain (labeled "A Torn Sack of Grain"), 91 of which exist in the game.
- Open-topped grain Sacks (but not closed-top Sacks, neither short nor tall). There are 520 such containers, all labeled "Sack"; when you first find them they will either contain 5 identical samples of a grain (Corn, Flour, Rice, or Wheat Grain) or be empty. A large number of other sacks are also safe containers, but cannot be safely identified visually.
[edit] City Houses
Generally, containers in houses are able to be used freely, once purchased. The only break of this rule is the house at Anvil, in which you may enter it before buying it. If you only use houses that you own, you should have no problems.
