About Me
My real name is not Jak Atackka, although that would be pretty neat. My real name is Alex, I'm 17, and I live in the middle of nowhere (right next to the W). I have a decent amount of programming experience, including Java, C++, and TIBASIC (graphing calculators). I don't enjoy talking about myself, so that's pretty much all of the personal stuff I'm going to divulge :)
My friend introduced me to the Elder Scrolls series by loaning me Oblivion GOTY Edition, and I was hooked. Since then, I've been dedicating (not wasting!) hundreds if not thousands of hours of time immersing myself in the rich lore and landscape of Tamriel. I've been using UESPWiki since I first googled "Oblivion". I didn't join the wiki then, because I had nothing to contribute. Once Skyrim came out, though, I got an account and started adding info to the website.
I am a huge fan of all aspects of the Elder Scrolls. I've played Oblivion (including Knights of the Nine and Shivering Isles), Skyrim (including all of its DLC), Morrowind, Daggerfall, Arena, Redguard, Dawnstar, and Oblivion Mobile, although I've only played Skyrim and Oblivion to any degree of completion. I'm more well-versed in the lore of Tamriel than most, and have read almost every single in-game book. I couldn't discuss Aldmerian metaphysics with you, but I could tell you the name of the only Sload to appear in an Elder Scrolls game (N'Gasta, I actually wrote his article), the names of Tamriel's moons (Masser and Secunda, or Jode and Jone to the Khajiit), or the names of the three artifacts used by the holy Tribunal to gain their godly powers (Wraithguard, Sunder, and Keening).
Wiki Work
After editing here for months, I've found that I'm best at handling the coding-related stuff. I'm the unofficial manager of the AbuseFilter, and am the go-to guy for template and formatting help, if RobinHood70 or Alfwyn aren't available. I've also contributed significantly to our site's articles on the Dragon Language and created the Falmer Alphabet article, and odds are, if it's a template, I've edited it.
Other than template edits and various minor, cosmetic edits (such as tweaking the formatting or fixing typos), I rarely write large-scale articles (I hope to change that, however). I find that my time is a constant struggle between video games, the wiki, and real life, so I'm not on as much as I'd like to be. Having said that, though, feel free to drop me a line at any time - I check my email and my talk page practically hourly.
I was exploring my hard drive and stumbled across an old magic guide I had written for the various combat "classes" that can be used in Skyrim. I have it in full below, if you care to read it.
Combat Guide
The five schools of Magic are very specialized, and it's important to invest your time and energy in the right school. You don't want to waste those precious perks, either. Every player plays the game differently, including combat. Will you charge in and heal yourself as you fight? Maybe you'd rather have your enemies fight each other? Or perhaps you'd like to summon a Daedra and have them fight for you? It's important to use the right school(s) of magic early on, but oftentimes the way to know which school is best for you is to try it out. Here are some general tips on what school of magic to use to supplement or use as your mode of attack.
(Note: This is not a definitive list. This only lists a few popular combat styles. There are literally hundreds of different techniques, and listing them all is unreasonable.)
Berserker: You charge into battle, dual weapons at the ready, and laugh as you watch your enemies fall before you. You devastate your opponents with your rapid attacks, cutting them down before they can hurt you. This is not a very magically-inclined style of combat, but perhaps you could benefit with using Restoration magic to heal between charges, or even Alteration to improve your armor rating to compensate for your lack of a shield.
Crusher: You charge into battle, two-handed weapon at the ready, and crush your opponents into small fleshy bits. Who needs a shield when you can lop off their heads by the dozen? As above, this is not a very magically-inclined style of combat, but perhaps you could benefit with using Restoration magic to heal between charges, or Alteration to improve your armor rating to compensate for your lack of a shield.
Warrior: Weapon and shield readied, you battle with both strength and cunning, by balancing when you attack with when you defend. Your foe is about to do a power strike? Shield bash him, and punish him for leaving himself unguarded. As a melee class, this isn't great for magic. However, Restoration magic is very valuable, both for healing and for casting Ward spells to aid in fighting those pesky mages. You might also benefit from Conjuration, because you can raise your recently slain opponents to aid you or summon an Atronach to help pound the enemy.
Archer: There's no need to rush headlong into battle when you can take out your enemies from afar. This tends to be more of a secondary form of attack, as it benefits melee and stealth classes equally. If you are leaning towards melee, use Restoration and Alteration magic. If you are leaning towards stealth, Illusion magic is your best friend, particularly with Invisibility. If you are leaning towards something more unique, Conjuring up an Atronach or an undead friend to distract your foes as you pelt them with arrows from afar works pretty well - just try not to hit your summoned creatures.
Assassin: Shadow is your friend. You strike from the dark, when your enemy least expects it, and end the battle quickly. An arrow to the spine or perhaps a quick slit of the throat will eliminate anything that stands in your way. Illusion magic is very helpful, with spells like Muffle and Invisibility helping you stay hidden. Alteration can also help, with Detect Life and Waterbreathing.
Rogue: You fight dirty, and you love it. Sneak up to your enemies, give them a quick crack on the head with a mace, and then finish them off. You might also set them on fire from a distance and hide as they burn up. As a stealth class, Illusion can help quite a bit. Destruction magic can also be useful, if the situation gets a little hairy.
Battlemage: Plain ol' fireballs will serve just fine for you. All you need is a decent line of sight, and your foe is as good as dead. The most magically inclined class of all, they use Destruction magic profusely, with a lot of help from Restoration magic. Don't forget Alteration - spells like Mass Paralysis can be incredibly helpful in your eternal pursuit of destruction. Done well, this can be an extremely powerful class, capable of eliminating vast hordes of enemies quickly.
Conjurer: Why fight at all when you can just summon a Daedra to do the fighting for you? While your at it, you might as well throw in a few fireballs to liven up the party, or even a Frenzy spell or two. Obviously, Conjuration is your best friend, with Destruction and Illusion being helpful but fully optional addons.
Pacifist: You don't want to fight. You will do anything to avoid conflict. Maybe it's because you have a strong aversion to violence - maybe it's because you don't want to stain your nice, clean robes. Either way, you use Illusion magic. Calm your enemies, or perhaps make them run in terror at the very sight of you. If you must fight, Conjure up an ally to do the fighting for you, and stand off to the side and hope nobody notices you. As a pacifist, you also need to have strong control of Restoration magic.
Psychic: You slay your enemies from within. Control their minds, and have them do your bidding. Illusion contains spells like Frenzy (which gets your foes to fight each other), Fear (which makes your foes run scared), and Calm (which calms your foes so you can walk right up to them and stab them in the face). If you want to wreak mental havoc on your enemies, use Illusion. For even more psychological fun, use Conjuration and raise the slain foes to fight those still living. Done correctly, this can be one of the most enjoyable classes to play as, provided you enjoy mentally torturing your foes and\or are somewhat mentally imbalanced.
In general, if you want a stealth class, use Illusion. Muffle and Invisibility will get you close enough to your enemy to stab them in the back, and the same spells will get you out of a tricky situation. If you prefer to deal with your problems head-on, Restoration is always useful, as is Alteration if you develop it enough. Conjuration magic works very well, and can aid a warrior a lot if well developed; of course, Conjuration magic works well by itself. Destruction magic can be a useful sidearm to many classes, but it will be most useful to a battlemage.
And don't forget about enchanting. This has to be one of the most useful skills in the entire game. Enchanting your weapons is a must. Depending on your playing style, different enchantments will aid you more than others. Here, the guide ends. Look up different enchantments and decide which one is best for you. Always fight with enchanted weapons, and try to always wear an enchanted amulet or ring of some sort. It may be the difference between life and death.
