Chapter Four: No Choice At All

Two hours later and Faric was wandering around the Imperial City in a daze. The choice he had been given was stark: kill Risi or watch her die and then be killed himself.

He found himself walking through the Arboretum and made his way to the bench on which he and Risi had sat earlier. Faric threw himself onto the seat and buried his head in his hands, moaning as he remembered the flippant way he had spoken about the Dark Brotherhood earlier. He knew about the Morag Tong and grudgingly respected their codes of honour and respect for tradition. Now he remembered stories about the Brotherhood from drunken conversations in taverns. They had split off from the Morag Tong centuries ago and had no such code. One fairly recent rumor had been about a group of party-goers in Skingrad that were all found dead. The watch had blamed the food; others were sure the Brotherhood were involved. It sounded like a typical Dark Brotherhood job from what Faric knew - kill your target, kill anything that gets in between you and your target and kill anything that might have possibly witnessed any of the above.

Faric considered his options. He'd been given options A and B but a good thief was never satisfied with such limited choices and he began looking for options C, D and as many others as he could find. Running away wasn't really an option as he'd be found - of that he was sure - and dealt with. The same thing applied to hiding Risi.
