News Articles[edit]

Is it just the admins that are allowed to write news articles as I've found something relevant to one of the articles. --odd.bod

Anyone can edit any of the existing news articles (just click the "edit" button). If you would like to write a new article, you are also free to do so. Create a new article containing the news item (you can model it after one of the existing articles, e.g., UESPWiki:News/UESP Reaches 10,000 Articles), then add it to UESPWiki:News under proposed news. It will then get added to the main page by an admin, assuming we agree that it is newsworthy. --NepheleTalk 13:10, 15 January 2008 (EST)

Douglas Goodall Interview[edit]

Yeah, I recently found an interview with Douglas Goodall, an ex-developer who worked on Morrowind, but left before release. It was originally posted on the Imperial Library, but was taken down after another ex-developer asked for it to be removed. I've talked to the guy that conducted the interview, and he doesn't mind it being used by us, and the interview itself is a really interesting document about the design process at Bethesda. Of course, since it has caused a few problems in the past, I just wanted to make sure it was okay with you in the thing got posted here. The actual interview itself is here and there's a bit of discussion about it here. Well, thanks for your time. --Ratwar 18:14, 16 January 2008 (EST)

I don't mind but I'd like to know the details of why it was taken down from TIL originally. If it was just some ex-dev asking for no good reason that's fine, but if it was taken down at the request of Bethesda or a current dev (Pete, Todd, etc...) it has more ramifications. I'll look a bit more into it but in the meantime you might want to post this on the admin noticeboard and get some feedback from the rest of the admins. -- Daveh 18:37, 16 January 2008 (EST)
Well, the reason an ex-developer took an issue with it was that, in the course of the interview, Goodall says that there is really no 'correct' version of events in lore. That Bethesda has all of the different view points, and has never really decided about which of those really happened. To Michael Kirkbride, the ex-developer who asked for it to be taken down, this undercut the validity of Elder Scrolls lore. After a series of e-mails and PMs between Kirkbride and Sinder Velvin, where Sinder originally refused to take it down, Kirkbride threatened to remove all the content he had added to the Imperial Library.
As for the other administrators, I already informally discussed it with some of them on IRC, but I will ask on the noticeboard, as not everyone visits the channel. --Ratwar 09:14, 17 January 2008 (EST)
Yah, reading a bit more into it I don't have a problem with the interview being on the site. -- Daveh 09:16, 17 January 2008 (EST)

bad link[edit]

I wasn't sure who to send this to, so if it should have gone somewhere else, sorry. Anyway, on the Oblivion page, when I click on Services under World Information, and then click on Merchants, it sends me to here: http://www.uesp.net/wiki/Oblivion:Merchants The page never loaded. I figured I'd try it singular, so i deleted the 's' http://www.uesp.net/wiki/Oblivion:Merchant The page comes up then. Just thought I'd let you know about the bad link. 24.253.135.214 01:59, 17 January 2008 (EST)

The Merchants page works fine. It just takes a little while to load. The Merchant page is actually a redirect to the Merchants page, in any case. --Gaebrial 02:37, 17 January 2008 (EST)
Actually, it's a bit more complicated than that. Yes, the original link is correct and the page really is at Oblivion:Merchants (with an "s"). But that page wasn't working fine.
I'm guessing that the original poster is using IE and that Gaebrial is using Firefox. Because when I checked just now, the Merchants page was experiencing a glitch that happens periodicially to large wiki pages for unknown reasons: on IE the page comes up blank. It's not just that page is loading slowly; the page has completely finished loading yet the page is empty (even when you view the page source). And in all of the cases where this has previously happened (probably a dozen now over the last six months or so), Firefox still displays the page. In any case, I've now fixed the page. In every case so far, simply purging the page fixes it. --NepheleTalk 03:33, 17 January 2008 (EST)

RoBoT - New Bot Account[edit]

If you've got a minute, please could you give the account RoBoT bot status please? It's a new bot in the same vein as NepheleBot that will hopefully take some of the pressure of Nephele. It uses exactly the same safeguards as hers does and will be run with the same hand-holding. It's only going to get the easy stuff at first to make sure it's not being too silly. Thanks. –RpehTCE 05:52, 27 January 2008 (EST)

Done. I assume this is your bot? -- Daveh 11:23, 27 January 2008 (EST)
Yes it's mine - sorry, I should have said. Thanks for making the change. –RpehTCE 13:50, 27 January 2008 (EST)

Hi please help me[edit]

I think this is wery good wiki...But i have one question...How do you create this wiki?Is only page when you register and online edit all of that think? Please answer me on my mail petrb2000jr@hotmail.com.Thanks for your ansver Pitrisss

Sorry, but I'm really not sure what you're asking. It seems that you know how to create an account and how to edit a wiki page. All the other pages on the site can be edited the exact same way. You may want to look at our Getting Started guide, or at our Help pages. Or you may want to check the wikipedia in your native language (cs.wikipedia.org?) for general information about how wikis work. --NepheleTalk 22:46, 28 March 2008 (EDT)

Howdy Dave, bit o' a problem on the forum.[edit]

I say, it seems I've been banned from the forums, it'd be nice if you could take a looky at it and correct it. Same account name on the forum as on the Wiki. Any help would be appreciated, I don't think I did *that* bad of a moderation job did I? Magnus - 22/03/08 22:43 GMT -4:00.

You haven't been banned from the forums. It's an unfortunate and very annoying glitch right now with the forums, that causes false login messages to get displayed. Using the new forums link, forums.uesp.net , helps but doesn't completely fix the problem. Basically you just need to try logging in a few times until it works. The problem definitely needs to be fixed, but in the meantime that's all that I can suggest. --NepheleTalk 01:37, 23 March 2008 (EDT)
Interesting, considering I wasn't even attempting to login, just view the forums. I guess I am *not* that bad of a moderator afterall, hurrah! - Magnus - 23/03/08 11:08 -4:00 GMT.

New Admin; Old Problems[edit]

Hi Daveh! I'm guessing you're still busy travelling for work, but I wanted to make sure you were aware of a couple of items that need your attention. The good news is Eshe has been nominated to be an admin; the nomination is mainly just awaiting your input. See UESPWiki:Administrator Noticeboard#Eshe Request for Adminship. The bad news is that there continue to be a few bizarre problems on the server, see UESPWiki:Administrator Noticeboard#Server-level Problems. Whenever you get a chance :) --NepheleTalk 00:55, 24 March 2008 (EDT)

Yes...bit of a long and busy trip this time but I've been trying to keep an eye on things. Will look into it tonight hopefully and will be back home this weekend. -- Daveh 11:38, 27 March 2008 (EDT)
Hi Daveh. I hope your trip went well. Can I just remind you about Eshe's RFA? Assuming you don't have a problem with it, it'd be good to have her on the team. Thanks. –RpehTCE 06:01, 31 March 2008 (EDT)
Done! -- Daveh 10:15, 31 March 2008 (EDT)
Thank you! Just one more thing? As per the previous discussion, please could you also give her CheckUser? It's an invaluable tool when identifying sockpuppets. –RpehTCE 14:35, 31 March 2008 (EDT)
Sure thing... -- Daveh 15:26, 31 March 2008 (EDT)
On a related, but not particularly important note, I just noticed that Nephele and Wrye are not listed as Patrollers, while the rest of the active Admins are. Not that it matters, as Admins are automatically granted Patroller rights, just wondered if it was worth making it all consistant. Likewise, Ratwar doesn't have Cartographer and Map rights set, unlike the rest of us. (Not counting Garrett and Endareth who are pretty much gone now, and the mysterious WikiSysop...) Anyhow, no rush as it's obviously profoundly unimportant, but just if you felt like making things all nice and even for some reason - whatever. --TheRealLurlock Talk 23:13, 1 April 2008 (EDT)

Scaling PNG support[edit]

Just before the Easter Holidays, there was a discussiong in my talk page between Nephele, Lurlock and myself, about scaling PNGs. I think it would be quite useful to be able to scale PNGs properly, i.e. maintaining their transparency, for two main reasons: 1) people won't have to upload several different versions of the same image (one for each different size they'd like to have), and 2) if the original image is updated, the wiki will update all sized verisons of that image, again wihtout the need to upload the sized verisons manually.

Implementing proper scaling of PNGs is quite simple. All it requires is a current installation of ImageMagick on the server and a couple of changes to the wiki settings. Instructions can be found here. Could you please do this? If you need any help, I may be able to give a hand (or two). --DrPhoton 10:07, 27 March 2008 (EDT)

Great site[edit]

I, too, want to thank you for such a great site. Keep up the good work and thank you! --Michaeldsuarez (Talk)/(Contribs) 23:35, 9 April 2008 (EDT)

I agree wholeheartedly with the above - this site is a brilliant resource!86.149.73.222 21:12, 15 April 2008 (EDT)

I just wanted to say that the recommended mod lists are the greatest things to happen to Oblivion, they've showed me some revolutionary mods that I would have otherwise NEVER known about, and I give a hats off to you for this great site. 71.91.222.187 18:17, 19 April 2008 (EDT)

Two New Patrollers[edit]

Edit Count special page[edit]

Hi Dave. I talked to Nephele about this, and as I'd thought, she redirected me to you. If it's doable, I wouldn't mind seeing an "Edit Count" special page. I think Nephele's reply basically covers the details you'd need to know, and since she understands the topic better than I do, I'll just point you to the reply on her talk page: Edit Count.

Please let me know what you think. Thanks! --Robin Hood (TalkE-mailContribs) 13:42, 28 April 2008 (EDT)

I'll look into switching from the custom "Active Users" page which I wrote to the "Edit Count" extension. -- Daveh 12:14, 29 April 2008 (EDT)
I can't speak for anyone else, but I really like the "Active Users" page as well. If it's a choice of one or the other, I think I'd take the "Active Users". Unless, of course, the "Edit Count" will ultimately do all that and more. I don't pretend to be knowledgeable about Wiki internals. :) --Robin Hood (TalkE-mailContribs) 12:18, 29 April 2008 (EDT)
I haven't looked into "Edit Count" in detail but I thought they were the same. If not I'll simply use both of them. -- Daveh 12:23, 29 April 2008 (EDT)
The difference is that EditCount can only be aimed at one user, wheras in ActiveUsers you see an entire list, allowing more easy comparison. - Game LordTalk|Contribs 12:48, 29 April 2008 (EDT)

Daggerfall Stuff[edit]

I have a few questions which I think would require your opinion (and permission).

  • In regards to Daggerfall Geography, do we want to include the data for all places, or only the important places? I don't see any value in adding complete town data because since the data is static (edits wouldn't make any sense) it's not really in the spirit of wiki. Since that's not really in the spirit of things, the obvious alternative would be a CGI of some sort (a simple shell script could control ATLAS, for example), but I can't think of any compelling reason to start a non-wiki section on a wiki site since this data the user can get for themself by actually using atlas.exe directly on their local computer. Even though I assume the answer is "no" (and I'm even against the idea), I feel it should be asked for sake of completeness. Yes, a shell script combined with atlas combined with wget could create all the articles and stubs, but I honestly believe those thousand of articles would be of dubious value at best.
  • I would like to add the corrected BIOG00T0.TXT for download. You are no doubt aware that even in 2.13 #3.c has an incorrect line/effect. I'm not comfortable simply adding "File:BIOG00T0.TXT" to the wiki, especially since the current Daggerfall Files are not linked as such. I think it would be preferable if the corrected BIOG00T0.TXT conformed to all the other files (assuming you were to offer it for download). Would you prefer I simply added it as an article, or would you prefer to receive it via email and take care of it yourself?
  • Related to the above, how should one submit custom executables, such as the various quest editors and what not available? Assume for a moment some genius created a better gizmo.exe for use with Daggerfall. How would one submit it to the site, and (more importantly) how should one submit it?

Uniblab 16:12, 5 May 2008 (EDT)

  • Definitely not all places...there are some 14,000 locations in DF. Definitely include anything used in the main quest (which is not a random location anyways) and then any major city, province, and dungeon. Technically I could implement a DF map like the OB map but its such a low priority I'll likely never get around to doing it.
  • Since its a text file you can add it as an article by itself and/or another article explaining the bug fix (if there isn't one already). Or see below for uploading files.
  • You can upload anything as an "Image", such as a ZIP file. Currently we don't have anything else setup that doesn't require work on my part (like manually uploading it which is always possible). Since we're not a file/mod site we don't really need a good system for file uploads/downloads.

Morrowind Interactive Map[edit]

Hey, I was just having a discussion about this program I downloaded from who-knows-where-now several years ago, but the website listed in the Readme is now defunct, so I don't know where to direct people to get a copy of it. The creator, Lech March's site seems to be gone as well. I then noticed your name was in the credits, (along with the old m0use.net URL for the site), so I figured you might know something about where one might acquire this program today. In fact, if you were involved with this, we could probably even host the file here, and direct people to it when needed, adding a link to Morrowind:Maps of course. --TheRealLurlock Talk 12:51, 11 May 2008 (EDT)

Lech's offline program was based on my online Java Morrowind map which is probably why my name was in the credits. I might have some copies of the program that I can dig up. -- Daveh 17:26, 12 May 2008 (EDT)

Search Select Function[edit]

A request was made to add "Select All" and "Deselect All" options to the site's search function. I've created an updated copy of SpecialSearch.php that implements the feature. The modified file is sitting at /home/nephele/edits/SpecialSearch.php on content1. It should just be possible to copy the new file into the includes/ directory and restart php (assuming, as usual, that I didn't make any stupid typos...). Let me know if you have any questions :) --NepheleTalk 23:28, 16 May 2008 (EDT)

Another new Patroller[edit]

When you have a minute, please could you add Game Lord to the patrollers group? He just passed his nomination with a clean bill of health. Thanks. –RpehTCE 11:23, 27 May 2008 (EDT)

Can not seem to redo pilgrimage quest!![edit]

(Moved to Pilgrimage talk page.)

Inappropriate Ads[edit]

I seem to remember a discussion a while ago where you asked for people to report inappropriate ads at the bottom of pages. Well today, for me at least, the ad at the bottom of Oblivion:Fat Ramp Camp is always one for "gay chubby dating" (www.GayChubbyDating.com). I haven't clicked it, but I don't think it's got anything to do with Oblivion, or gaming in general... --Gaebrial 09:28, 2 June 2008 (EDT)

I no longer see that ad, but now see a diet ad instead, which is equally inappropriate. Obviously, it's grabbing the "fat" and basing its ads on that.
Oh and on the off-chance that someone comes in screaming discrimination or whatever at Gaebrial, as one of the resident gay guys (and a "chubby" one, at that), I'll second his motion. As much as it might help me get a date (LOL), this is definitely not the place for that kind of ad. --Robin Hood (TalkE-mailContribs) 12:06, 2 June 2008 (EDT)
I've found another one that may be related. On the page Oblivion:Desolate Mine, there was an ad linking to this, which has nothing to do with Oblivion or gaming. - Game LordTalk|Contribs 08:37, 8 June 2008 (EDT)
The same ad is at the bottom of Bloodmoon:Discovery in the Mine. It seems to be the word "Mine" that's causing it; no idea why though. 84.152.251.103 12:43, 12 June 2008 (EDT)
Here's another ad. --GuildKnightTalk2me 11:21, 6 August 2008 (EDT)
Thanks for the notice. If you keep seeing these, or any other ad you think shouldn't be shown, just let me know. -- Daveh 17:41, 6 August 2008 (EDT)
It was an ad setting I misunderstand. I switched it to 'family friendly' so hopefully any questionable content won't show up again. It may take a few hours for the changes to take effect. -- Daveh 17:50, 6 August 2008 (EDT)

Fighter's Guild Conflict[edit]

(moved to the correct place)

Missing Map Tile (again)[edit]

We have a blank tile on the Oblivion map - and it's the same one that vanished back in October ([1]). It seems odd that the same one has gone twice. Could you work your magic when you get a minute? –RpehTCE 13:52, 11 June 2008 (EDT)

Wikia[edit]

Hi Daveh, I think that this pretty much solidifies are "no move to Wikia" policy. Their ideas would totally disrupt our wiki. - Game LordTalk|Contribs 14:10, 12 June 2008 (EDT)

Yah, I saw that too. While they might say "you can do anything you want" to get you in you're still pretty much at their mercy for stuff like this. -- Daveh 19:42, 16 June 2008 (EDT)

Special Page Updates[edit]

I've finally worked up the courage to investigate all of our broken Special pages... i.e., all the pages like Disambiguation pages that insist on only listing articles in the main namespace, even though 99.9% of our articles are in other namespaces. What I've opted to do is set up a new PHP function containing a SQL query snippet that checks whether namespaces are in the wgContentNamespaces array.... then paste that function into all the special pages' PHP code. It allows the special pages to be as similar as possible to the wikipedia pages, with a relatively small change to each article. I'll post all the revised PHP files in the directory /home/nephele/edits on content1.

When you get a chance, it should be possible to just copy all the files in that directory to the w/includes directory. If you want to do it one step at a time, it would be best to:

  1. Copy Namespace.php. All of the other files use the new function in Namespace.php, so none of them will work without this file
  2. Copy SpecialDisambiguations.php. At that point, you should be able to check Special:Disambiguations to see whether things are working OK. The updated version of the page should list more than just one "Testpage" article.
  3. Copy the rest in any order you'd like.

In case you're curious, I am examining both UESP's modified versions of these files and the original mediawiki versions. So I'm trying to make sure that I don't miss any other updates that have been done. But in general what I'm doing replaces what you'd previously done. In some cases, the functionality is nearly identical, but I figured I'd update the file anyway for consistency. In other cases, the new update should fix problems such as talk pages being listed incorrectly, or problems with derived classes (for example, Uncategorized categories isn't working correctly at the moment because of the changes made to the parent class at SpecialUncategorizedpages.php).

And in case you're worried about having a whole extra list of customized PHP files and the problems they might cause next time you want to upgrade the mediawiki software.... My plan is that, once these changes are working on UESP, I'll make a request to mediawiki to incorporate the revisions into the core mediawiki software, because I think this is fundamentally a bug (or at least an incompletely implemented feature) in the software: why provide a way to define content namespaces if the software then ignores the definition? If I'm successful, it should mean that next time UESP needs to be upgraded, there will be fewer custom files to worry about.

Let me know if you have any questions :) --NepheleTalk 19:25, 12 June 2008 (EDT)

Just some notes (more for myself) after scanning through previous requests related to this topic, scouring the other special pages, etc.
  • Ideally, New pages would have "all" as a default option on the namespace selector. Right now the namespace selector is effectively disabled, and "all" is the only option. But the coding is not straightforward and it's not a critical issue IMO, so I've skipped it for now.
  • Lurlock mentioned a problem with Protected pages... but I'm not seeing any problem with the page. Lurlock, any chance you could clarify what the problem is?
  • Lurlock also mentioned it would be helpful to be able to show uncategorized templates in the Uncategorized pages list. If the changes I've made so far worked, then an extension to list uncategorized templates would be pretty easy to create. I'd rather first test out these changes, though.
  • Other than that, hopefully everything in Lurlock's fix-it list is fixed....
OK, I think I'm done with special pages for now :) --NepheleTalk 22:06, 12 June 2008 (EDT)
As mentioned on the mwmap design page I've taken a stab at putting together revised code for the UespMap extension. I figured I'd add the information here so that you can install this at the same time as the other php files, and minimize the number of required php restarts. To install the extension you should need to:
  • Uninstall SiMap (longterm the new UespMap will replace SiMap, therefore UespMap already includes a parser hook for the simap tag, which will conflict with SiMap)
  • Delete everything that's currently in the w/extensions/UespMap directory
  • Copy UespMap.php from maps/UespMap.php to w/extensions/UespMap/UespMap.php
  • Hopefully, it will then be possible to setup a MWMap page similar to the existing ones (should just need to replace uespmap with mwmap in the tags). If there any required tweaks, they're most likely to be in files other than UespMap. In other words, I'd say leave it in place even if it's buggy and I'll try to get it working from there.
Some notes about what I've done / am doing with the maps.
  • I'm moving towards consolidating all of the map code in the maps directory, and making it so that as much of the code as possible is shared between all three maps (so, for example, my recent updates to alphabetize entries and fix Safari can be implemented once, and will simultatneously take effect on all maps). This updated UespMap extension is in the same vein: a single extension instead of three, and use the same .js and .css files as the main map.
  • Installing the new UespMap.php file will break both User:Daveh/Map and User:Daveh/SiMap. Because I haven't finished my code consolidation yet, only the mwmap tags are going to work properly for now (and that's assuming I got the coding right!). In the next week, I should be able to finish the consolidation, and at that point uespmap and simap tags will again work (without requiring any more mediawiki file updates; it's all edits in the maps directory). But I wanted to get this new extension in place right now so that we can start to edit the Morrowind map -- no edits are needed for the other two maps right now, so disabling editing on those in exchange for getting mwmap editing working as soon as possible seems to be reasonable.
Finally, there are a couple other minor requests that will help us further improve the mwmap:
  • Could you give Benould cartographer and map privileges?
  • Could you set up an ftp account on content1 for rpeh, so he can upload new map tiles directly to the server? The details are flexible. For example, if you'd prefer to just allow uploads to the ftp directory, that's fine; I can easily move the files once they're on content1 -- a simple mv command is a lot easier than emailing mega-files around the world a few times ;) You can email rpeh with the details (if IRC isn't convenient, that is).
Thanks for everything! --NepheleTalk 18:18, 15 June 2008 (EDT)

Progress[edit]

  • Benould map/cartographer privileges done! -- Daveh 19:45, 16 June 2008 (EDT)
  • Added a user account for Rpeh (/home/rpeh). Will tell him the passwd or email it if I don't see him. -- Daveh 19:48, 16 June 2008 (EDT)
  • Special Pages notes...
  • Original versions saved in the /home/backup/wikiincludes path.
  • Special:Lonelypages didn't work, SQL query error. Remove a $ from page in the query.
  • Special:Mostcategories doesn't show the article namespace. Fixed by looking at how some of the other 'most' pages display titles.
  • Special:Randompage only seems to choose articles in the main namespace. Note the original random page I modified a while ago to work correctly with all the namespaces. Current version of this page is the original (not yours).
  • Special:Uncategorizedpages SQL error. Missing an end comment marker */ before the SQL query string.
  • Note I haven't modified any files in your home directory, just the ones in /w/includes. -- Daveh 20:01, 16 June 2008 (EDT)
  • New UespMap extension installed, not tested. -- Daveh 20:35, 16 June 2008 (EDT)

Name Change[edit]

Hi Daveh. I've heard that you can change peoples username on this site. i ask because I have misspelled sithis and was wondering if it could be sorted out. thanks a lot. p.s. great job with the site!--The Wrath Of SIthis 13:11, 20 June 2008 (EDT)

I think it works (have only used it once before). What is the correct spelling of your name? -- Daveh 20:54, 25 June 2008 (EDT)
It is none of my business, but it would be The Wrath of Sithis without the capitalized I as it is currently.-Puddle TalkContribs. 21:01, 25 June 2008 (EDT)

Great work on the Script page![edit]

Wow! That's a lot of detail. Nice work - I found it very helpful. I've been able to write the early beginnings of a compiler for the Oblivion scripting language using the info you provided. So far, most everything seems complete and accurate, but I'll post additional findings as I come across them. How long did this take you to pull together? Sythe 01:23, 25 June 2008 (EDT)

Many thanks! The answer is it depends on exactly what you were looking at. Most of the Oblivion specific notes didn't take very long as I did most of the work figuring stuff out for Morrowind. While Oblivion is a different game and uses a different engine and file formats, the formats and content are very similar. A lot of the Morrowind specific modding information comes from other contributors as well, not only myself....and then there's all the editors who make everything look good.
Shortly after Oblivion was released I got a script compiler working as well (part of ObEdit) but didn't have the time/will to do anything with it. -- Daveh 21:03, 25 June 2008 (EDT)

Dapel organization[edit]

I hope you don't mind, I just took the liberty of adding a bit of organization to the Dapel pages, mainly to keep them all from showing up as Uncategorized Pages. I created a breadcrumb trail with a Category, and added it to your Template:DPL|DPL header, then made sure that header was used on all such pages (or at least the ones that were showing up as uncategorized, I didn't check if there were others.) This should make these pages a little less visible for the rest of us, not sure if you're still even using them or not, but just wanted to let you know. --TheRealLurlock Talk 10:19, 28 June 2008 (EDT)

Namespace Stuff[edit]

Hey, I'm not sure if you noticed, but we've been having a conversation about Moving some of the Namespaces Around. Most of the editors feel that it would be best if we moved the Tamriel articles to a new Namespace (Lore), but before we can start doing this, we need a Lore namespace. Could you create that for us?--Ratwar 18:19, 29 June 2008 (EDT)

Sorry to pester but if this could be done soon, that would be great. Nephele and I have the bots ready to roll, the move-over of templates, parameters and articles are all ready and we're just awaiting the creating of the namespace. If you could push this one up your list, I'll buy you a beer if you're ever in London :). –RpehTCE 15:25, 9 July 2008 (EDT)
Thanks for waiting and sorry for the lengthy delay again...just got back from a busy week in Mexico and completely forgot about it. I just added the the Lore namespace. -- Daveh 11:17, 29 July 2008 (EDT)
Fantastic! Thank you, and I hope you had an enjoyable / productive time in Mexico. I'll kick off the bot in (BST) morning when the site's less busy. –RpehTCE 12:00, 29 July 2008 (EDT)
Thanks for the new namespace! But, of course, completing that task then just frees us to come up with other tasks that need to be done ;) There are two new php files in my /home/nephele/edits directory on content1: SpecialSearch.php and SpecialWantedpages.php. Each should be ready for installation in w/includes, replacing the existing files. SpecialSearch is updated to replace Tamriel with Lore (details); SpecialWantedpages is a tweak to remove redlinks on user pages from the wanted pages list (details). Would it be possible to put those files in place when you get a chance? Thanks --NepheleTalk 16:35, 31 July 2008 (EDT)
Both done and appear to be working. -- Daveh 13:33, 2 August 2008 (EDT)
Thanks! --NepheleTalk 00:29, 3 August 2008 (EDT)

Forums (3)[edit]

In addition to the Namespace stuff above, could you give my forum account access to the moderator forum? --Ratwar 21:42, 3 July 2008 (EDT)

External redirect[edit]

Hi Daveh, Twice today whil accessing the site i have been redirected to what appears to be a borwser exploit, http//ad2.adecn.com/here.spotv2.2time006spotId1535 5c0ms1218345188875 (ive deliberately left this unlinked so that no-one accidentally clicks it) anyway, I have donoe a full adware/virus scan on my pc and it has come back clean, and I have only had this trouble on uesp, It ovvured the 1st time when i accessed the Special:Recentchanges page and once at the Special:UserLogin page, just thought you should be aware, since to me its starting to look more and more like trouble at your end, (not sure if anyone else has had this problem but it has not happened on any other sites and as i said, my pc comes back clean) --Volanaro 03:28, 10 August 2008 (EDT)

This looks like an ad was redirecting your browser (assuming you use IE) when the page was loaded. I'm not quite sure where it came from since I don't use adecn.com or any related site for ads (that I know of). I'm pretty sure its not a server exploit but either way I'll look into it and see if I can stop it from happening. -- Daveh 11:41, 10 August 2008 (EDT)
Thanks for clearing that up, it is true that this does not happen when i use firefox (which i do the majority of the time) Im not likely to be using the PC I used to have with IE on it for a while now so well see what happens eventually --Volanaro 06:08, 18 August 2008 (EDT)

Server Upgrade[edit]

Hi Dave. The latest set of server upgrades clearly aren't working as intended. The site has been completely inaccessible at some points over the last day, and consistently much too slow to be useful. We've even had complaints from readers. Would it be possible to go back to the last workable server configuration, at least until you've had time to figure out what's going on? Thanks. --NepheleTalk 11:23, 11 August 2008 (EDT)

We currently are running the 'old' configuration. The short story is I switched the Wiki to use the new DB on Sunday morning. On Sunday afternoon I noticed it was still using the old database (don't know why). I invalidated the MediaWiki file cache which snowballed into the site becoming completely unusable. Shortly after this I reset things back to their previous configuration but had to reboot content1/squid1 several times in the process. Unfortunately this means bad performance for the next couple of days while the various caches get built back to normal. This will also give me time to play with the other wikis to see exactly why the db switch didn't happen.
So an even shorter version...I've done/am doing all that I can to get the server back to a stable point. It was more my mistake than the actual upgrade. -- Daveh 15:50, 11 August 2008 (EDT)
I just realized (~15 minutes ago) that memcached was not running on content1. Starting it seems to have helped the server tremendously. Hopefully this was the reason things did not start up again smoothly yesterday (things were acting wierd and I couldn't figure out why). The content1 server hasn't been restarted since we began using it so things were not properly setup to start on boot (both mysql and lighttpd didn't start properly but I caught those right away). -- Daveh 15:56, 11 August 2008 (EDT)
Another thing I can confirm, the lack of sidebar, was just due to memcached not running (MediaWiki was likely trying to load it from the cache which did not exist). For logged in users it should be fine now. For non-logged in users, unfortunately, the cached version on squid1 likely does not have the sidebar. I'll either have to invalidate all pages or just wait until they are invalidated normally (a few days). -- Daveh 16:01, 11 August 2008 (EDT)
Ah, much faster now, although the skin is still Monobook white. DaedryonTCE 16:04, 11 August 2008 (EDT)
Also, the text on most pages isn't like it's supposed to be. DaedryonTCE 16:06, 11 August 2008 (EDT)
Thanks, Daveh. Things are finally responding normally again :) Daedryon: I'm getting the standard background. You may need to use Ctrl-F5 to force your browser to update properly. --NepheleTalk 16:09, 11 August 2008 (EDT)

Darkle has just been voted in as a patroller. When you have a minute, please could you add the necessary permissions? Thanks. –RpehTCE 08:38, 9 October 2008 (EDT)

TestPage[edit]

You created this page over a year ago, and nothing's been done with it since. I'd have proposed it for deletion were it not for your note at the top specifically requesting that it not be deleted. Is there still any reason to keep this around? Or is it okay to get rid of it? Just trying to clean up the orphaned pages list a bit. --TheRealLurlock Talk 16:55, 15 October 2008 (EDT)

I don't remember exactly why I created that page but I don't see any reason to keep it now. Feel free to delete it. -- Daveh 14:17, 25 October 2008 (EDT)

Fallout 3 Wiki?[edit]

Given the strong similarities between the forthcoming Fallout 3 and Oblivion, it would be really great to see a Fallout 3 Wiki of the same quality as the UESP site. Any plans to do this? HappySpaceInvdr 07:53, 25 October 2008 (EDT)

If three is a wiki like this planned then i can confirm it will not be here, this site is dedicated to the Elder Scrolls games only and Fallout 3 is comlpetely unrelated to it. So the simple answer to your question is no. --Volanaro TCE 08:04, 25 October 2008 (EDT)
There is already a Fallout Wiki on Wikia along with a couple other minor F3 wikis around. If there wasn't a good established Fallout wiki I'd create one but it would be completely seperate from this ES wiki. -- Daveh 14:20, 25 October 2008 (EDT)
I have spent time on the Fallout Wiki on Wikia, and I find the format to be inefficient and not near the standard that UESP establishes. I have suggested using a similar format to that of UESP however the format was rejected by an admin. I believe that a wiki established by members of UESP would be much more successful and I would be very active in attributing to such a wiki if it existed. I understand that you are more than likely a very busy person but please reconsider establishing a Fallout wiki. 76.109.251.18 23:33, 29 October 2008 (EDT)
I think the answer is a definite no, but if you have the resources and knowhow, you could do it yourself. I don't know how to do it though. --Timmeh Talk 23:53, 29 October 2008 (EDT)
I am the admin of The Vault Fallout wiki and I don't see much of a reason in creating a separate wiki just because we use a different format for the articles (without the prefixes for individual games before each article's name). I know that many of you might be used to UESP's format and I'm not saying that ours is superior (simply different, but you cannot expect us to change the article format of the whole wiki that goes several years back), but I still encourage all of you to contribute and help create the biggest guide to Fallout 3 instead of setting up a separate wiki and needlessly dividing the community (and in case you mention it, I don't think there is much of a point in Wikia's Oblivion wiki). - Ausir 23:32, 30 October 2008 (EDT)

GuildKnight for Admin[edit]

Hi Daveh. We have a new administrative candidate for your approval: GuildKnight. Assuming you're okay with the idea, please can you give her the usual admin groups of cartographer, checkuser, map, patroller, and sysop? Thanks! –RpehTCE 11:07, 8 November 2008 (EST)

flash game[edit]

hey im josh, or joshwa as my username surgests, well basicly im a flash programmer and ive just finished polishing up most of a top down game system, so i was wondering if you wanted to do a project where the users could create quests for the game, pick the setting etc, all based on the eldar scroll universe, of course there is alot of decisions to be made, storyline, graphics, viewpoints, etc so yes please message me back if your interested and maybe some msn or some other instant messenger to help with it? thanks anyway joshwa_a

hate to repeat myself and seem a bit pushy but yes i do require an answer before friday GMT because otherwise i wont be able to get the peopel together for the enviroments, but in the time since i first posted this message i tweaked my code quite alot so yes hopefully if you do say yes it will be better :) hope you reply soon joshwa_a

May I suggest that you contact Daveh via email? This matter isn't really appropriate for a UESP talk page and he might even respond faster to an email. Thanks. - Game LordTalk|Contribs 16:17, 19 November 2008 (EST)
Yeah probably a better idea to be fair, il do that now thanks

porn spam message[edit]

I just had a porn spam pm from this username: DaniParlet

If you have an issue you need to report about UESP's forums, it's best to get in touch directly with one of the forum moderators (for example: Bear, Codex, Deandra, or Logius) via pm. I've notified them of this message; Bear has confirmed that DaniParlet is a spambot and dealt with it. However, contacting them yourself in future would ensure a much faster response. --NepheleTalk 19:35, 21 November 2008 (EST)
