Welcome![edit]

Hello JohnB! Welcome to UESPWiki! It's always good to have new members. If you would like to help improve any of our pages, you may want to take a look at the following links:

If you would like to spice up your userpage, click here for a list of userboxes you can use, including a guide to making your own.

When you're editing, it's always a good idea to leave edit summaries to explain the changes you have made to a particular page, and remember to sign your talk page posts with four tildes ~~~~. Also, the "show preview" button is a great way to view the changes you've made so far without actually saving the page (our patrollers really appreciate it!).

Feel free to practice editing in the sandbox or discuss the games on the forums. If you need any help, don't hesitate to contact one of our mentors. Have fun! Echo (talk) 00:49, 27 August 2016 (UTC)

Show Preview[edit]

I feel kind of guilty saying this, as I'm not a full patroller, and having received this same message myself, but here goes:

Thanks for your interest in the wiki; however, you seem to have been making multiple edits to a page by not using the show preview button, clogging up the Recent Changes in the process. We appreciate your enthusiasm, but keep in mind that each edit needs to be patrolled, so multiple consecutive edits create an unnecessary hassle on those who patrol. So please utilize this feature! You may also want to look over our style guide and Getting Started guide. Feel free to ask if you have any questions. - KINMUNETALK﴿ 02:09, 27 August 2016 (UTC)

Hello?! You need to use Show Preview. At this point, you have made far too many small edits to the same page in a short timeframe. Thanks. Oh, and tip for including the fanfiction on your main userpage, put on your page. - KINMUNETALK﴿ 02:22, 27 August 2016 (UTC)
Additionally, while your dedication to creating a spiffy userpage and stories are commendable, the primary purpose of the wiki side of the site is for cataloguing information about the Elder Scrolls games. If your main interest is in writing fanfiction or discussing your characters, your needs may be better served on our forums. Zul do onikaanLaan tinvaak 01:58, 28 August 2016 (UTC)

() Someone ought to pipe in and mention the abuse filter bulk spamming limiter, and the fact that John here simply cannot do anything other than what he is doing now. Perhaps John should be told if he waits a week he can edit freely and dump his writings in one edit. Silence is GoldenBreak the Silence 02:30, 28 August 2016 (UTC)

Hey John, since the abuse filters are preventing you from uploading everything in one go, and since you seem to have already written everything out, if you'd like then I can post your works to the site for you. It'll put less strain on patrollers, and presumably be faster. - KINMUNETALK﴿ 11:23, 28 August 2016 (UTC)
In reply to Thuum, it took a bit of digging to see if we have a policy on fan fiction, but in the (distant) past, Dave has said that non-encyclopedic content like fan fiction is allowed. He didn't specifically address the case of a user contributing only fan fiction, but I think it's implied that he wants to allow for that scenario. Robin Hood  (talk) 04:46, 23 November 2016 (UTC)

Making multiple edits[edit]

I can see that you've already recieved a note about this above, but it would be really helpful if you were able to, instead of making 9 edits to your userpage, just make them all in one. That way, us userspace patrollers (and just normal patrollers too) don't have to patrol all 9 edits seperately. Thanks in advance. AlphaAbsol (talk) 06:58, 23 October 2016 (UTC)

I'm just appending this message to this thread since it's the same topic, but use that "show preview" button, mate. It allows you to preview and revise your edits before finalising them. You've got enough edits and your account is old enough that this shouldn't be an issue. Every single one of your edits has been to your own userpages for your fanfictions. Writing and sharing fanfiction is fine and other users do that, but it's not the site's primary purpose, and Recent Changes Patrollers having to stop to approve fanfiction edits by the dozen is a distraction that doesn't need to happen. Start previewing your edits and making them in as few of edits as you can, or I'll see about this being escalated, because it's quite ridiculous at this point. -damon  talkcontribs 02:14, 9 November 2016 (UTC)
As an administrator, I'll add my voice to this discussion. While your overall number of edits is still small, it can really add to patrollers' workload to have to proofread multiple edits, especially when they're made in quick succession. We all make mistakes or forget things once in a while, and it's fine if you want to save your work and then pick it back up later on, but please try to limit consecutive edits. If nothing else, you can always write your fan fiction offline (in Word or whatever you have available), then once you're finished, copy and paste it here. If the multiple edits keep up, administrators may have to take other measures, which I would hate for us to have to do. Robin Hood  (talk) 04:30, 23 November 2016 (UTC)

Image[edit]

Hi John, I noticed you tried to add an image of yourself to your page, but it didn't work. The main reason for that is that filenames are case sensitive on a wiki. To follow our naming conventions, I've moved the file, so if you add to your user page, it'll work as you expected. If you want it to be just a thumbnail rather than the full-sized picture, you can use . Have fun! Robin Hood  (talk) 15:44, 24 December 2016 (UTC)

Orphaned Fanfic[edit]

You may want to add links to your fanfic pages, to prevent them showing up on our orphaned pages list. —Legoless (talk) 00:42, 25 December 2016 (UTC)

Image Renames[edit]

Hi JohnB! Just wanted to let you know that I renamed a couple of your images a couple of your images and updated their names on your fan fiction pages as a courtesy. Happy editing! •WoahBro►talk 14:39, 31 December 2016 (UTC)

Pillsbury Doughboy[edit]

Hello, I have deleted the image of the Pillsbury Doughboy you have uploaded. While I respect your right to create fan fiction, I couldn't justify the image being uploaded to our site under the grounds of fair use. I would recommend using a link to the image to convey the character, if you feel it is necessary. Fair use relies primarily on four factors, which you can read on here. With these factors in mind, I found it hard to justify its inclusion on our site. I completely doubt there would have been any legal ramifications for us regardless, but we want to respect other's copyright as much as we can. --AKB Talk Cont Mail 03:18, 2 January 2017 (UTC)

Anonymous Edit[edit]

While I am almost completely sure this edit was made by you, I want to confirm because it was an anonymous edit. If it wasn't your edit, feel free to revert it of course! —Dillonn241 (talk) 05:26, 22 March 2017 (UTC)

Again, please log in if you're editing user pages. Otherwise editors are liable to revert those changes. —Legoless (talk) 20:26, 17 May 2017 (UTC)

Naming Images[edit]

Since you like to include personal images that you've uploaded in your fan fictions, please review the Naming Images on our Help:Images page. We have specified naming conventions for each game and also user images and, while it isn't the end of the world by any means, it would certainly make some people's lives easier if they didn't have to rename your images and update them accordingly on your pages. Thanks! •WoahBro►talk 16:27, 29 March 2017 (UTC)

Moving Pages[edit]

Hi John, for future reference, if you name a page incorrectly, you can move the page rather than blanking it and creating a new one (click the Move tab at the top of the page). Would you like me to delete the pages you blanked?

Also, you seem to have missed User:JohnB/The Book and the Stone 1. Robin Hood  (talk) 22:53, 19 May 2017 (UTC)

Warning and uploading images[edit]

Stop hand.svg You have repeatedly ignored messages from patrollers and admins about your editing behavior, neither responding nor listening to what they have asked you to change. If you continue to abuse your editing privileges, this IP address will be blocked from editing. ~ Alarra (talkcontribs) 08:42, 25 July 2017 (UTC)

Hello, we've noticed that you've been uploading a lot of images with the incorrect file names recently. This creates extra work for other editors, since we have to move the image, edit the old one to add a delete request for an admin to delete it, and update the pages that link to the image. When you upload an image, please name them in the format User-JohnB-(image name).jpg , and also please put the text into the "summary" box, so that it will put your images into the correct category and so that we also will not have to do so later. I have just made about 53 edits fixing 10 of your images, between moving them to the correct name and adding the missing category.

You have already been asked twice on your talk page to upload images with the correct name, and this is not the first case of you repeatedly ignoring messages from other patrollers and editors on your talk page. Please listen to what they are asking you to do to help avoid creating unnecessary extra work for others. ~ Alarra (talkcontribs) 08:41, 25 July 2017 (UTC)

Blocked[edit]

Stop X.svg You have been blocked from editing UESPWiki for one week due to repeatedly ignoring image upload standards (File:My photo-1.jpg, File:Sc145739.jpg). This behavior creates a lot of unnecessary work for other editors and has become disruptive to the site. If you wish to appeal the block, you may make your request on your talk page, which you can still edit even while being blocked. —Legoless (talk) 00:12, 30 July 2017 (UTC)

Unused Image[edit]

Hi John. You have uploaded an image File:Sc145739.jpg that is currently unused. Can you find a use for it, and add the appropriate license, or it will be deleted. Silence is GoldenBreak the Silence 10:42, 4 October 2017 (UTC)

The image is now in the process of being deleted, you have one week to respond before it is gone. Silence is GoldenBreak the Silence 12:14, 7 January 2018 (UTC)

Possible Copyright Violation[edit]

The Prester John image you uploaded recently may have been copyrighted, as a user found it on another site credited to Getty Images, which is a non-free site. There's a portion of the same image on Wikipedia, however, which is listed as being in the public domain. Since there's some doubt, I've removed it for now. If you can find a source that clearly indicates that the full image is in the public domain, I'll be happy to restore it. Robin Hood  (talk) 03:41, 1 March 2018 (UTC)

Images[edit]

Just to clarify, you're not blocked from uploading to UESP in any way, except for copyright images, of course. Even then, you're welcome to link to them if you wish, as long as you're not uploading them to our site without the permission of the author. So, for example, if you wanted to, instead of using "Figure 3" in www{dot}marineinsight{dot}com{slash}naval-architecture{slash}shipbuilding-process-finalising-the-ship{slash}, you could use Figure 3, and we'd be perfectly fine with that. Uploading the image itself would be a problem, since the entire content of that page is copyright, including the images. We don't have these rules to be difficult, we have them so we avoid getting sued by the copyright owner. They have roughly the same rules on Wikipedia. Robin Hood  (talk) 23:05, 23 May 2018 (UTC)

Insulting Language[edit]

Good morning. I have reverted your edit here as it contains abusive language towards other UESPWiki members. This part: Since I've been blocked from uploading graphics into UESPWiki for some perceived abuse of UESPWiki guidelines [actually some crotchety busy-body's call] [...] is not okay by any stretch. You have been told multiple times by multiple editors about our image guidelines. It was not one person's call, and even if it were, to call someone a 'crotchety busy-body' in a note is beyond rude. Please refrain from such behavior in the future. —likelolwhat talk lulzy to me 23:05, 23 May 2018 (UTC)
