[edit] Book Summary

Okay, the poem thing I can understand... but what's the need for the prev/next parameters? It's much more logical to have them at the bottom of the page since you'll probably want to read the book you're on before moving to another one. –RpehTCE 13:18, 4 August 2008 (EDT)

Not necessarily. And there's no reason not to have it in both places. We do so already on quest pages. I can think of many times when it would have been useful (to me at least) to have such links at the top of the page - say when you're looking to complete the set and want to know where to find them. It uses a minimal amount of space, and I think it's a useful navigational tool. It also clearly indicates that a book is part of a series, something which is not always obvious from the title, (E.g. Oblivion:Warrior, Morrowind:Azura and the Box), and also clearly indicates the order in which they should be read, also not always obvious (E.g. the 2920 series I'm on right now - not everybody has memorized the order of ES months), so if you get a link to a middle book (from say, a merchant's page or a location where it can be found, etc.), you'll know you're starting in the middle and should go back if you want the whole story. --TheRealLurlock Talk 13:25, 4 August 2008 (EDT)

[edit] A little something

You have been given a wine selection!

Your dedication and diligence to the wiki has not gone unnoticed. A user has seen the progress you've made, and has given you some wine because of it. Good work! The user reminded you to drink responsibly and also had the following to say:

For making the transition to Lore so smooth, with barely a hick-up! Cheers to rpeh, Lurlock, Ratwar and Nephele (well Lurlock managed to mess things up, and Ratwar, I am not sure if he is of legal drinking age ;) –BenouldTC 15:17, 5 August 2008 (EDT)

Umm... Thanks? I mean, I don't want to point fingers, but I wasn't the only one who stumbled a little bit over the changes, and my goof only required one little revert to fix, rather than hundreds, so I'm not really sure you can say I "messed things up". But whatever. I'll take free booze where I can get it - even if it's only virtual booze... --TheRealLurlock Talk 15:25, 5 August 2008 (EDT)

Nah man, all in jest, you all did a great job. --BenouldTC 16:01, 5 August 2008 (EDT)

[edit] Artisa Arelas and special dialog

" "Someone thinks the Masque of Clavicus Vile is here on Vvardenfell. Apparently there are many copies of 'N'Gasta! Kvata! Kvakis!' here on Vvardenfell. N'Gasta was a great Sload necromancer and servant of Clavicus Vile in the Second Era, and he may have had a wizard's tower here. An agent came to me asking questions about N'Gasta. The agent would not give his name, but I have learned he was in the employ of someone named Sorkvild the Raven".

The Npc is Artisa Arelas, Dunmer Pilgrim in the Abbey of St. Delyn, in Vivec. When asked about latest rumors, she has a 50% chance of saying this. " --This was give to me in a forum PM, is she the only NPC that has this rumor? If so, it might be enough to give her a NPC page. --BenouldTC 13:47, 8 August 2008 (EDT)

It appears to be true. She actually has a good deal of dialogue specific to her, though most of it is general stuff about magic, geography, and other basic lore, which isn't necessarily unique to her, but only is shared by only a small group of people. (I.e. not class, race, or location specific, but dialogue given only and specifically to certain people.) That particular rumor is indeed unique. The only other mentions of Clavicus Vile I found (outside of books) were in relation to the Bitter Cup. I suppose it's enough to get her a page. Most of the other people who share her other name-specific dialogues already have pages, being spell-merchants or trainers or what-not. --TheRealLurlock Talk 13:56, 8 August 2008 (EDT)

[edit] Ald'ruhn Council Club

Lurlock, why do you think we need a page for Ald'ruhn Council Club? As far as I know, there are no services offered there, no quests, and there's no connection to the Camonna Tong, only mention is in the Guide to Ald'ruhn. The Ald'ruhn Council Club has a few random NPCs, most of which are members of the Thieves Guild ;)

We could also get rid of the disambig, which would help because the only Council Club mentioned by anyone in-game is the one in Balmora, related to four quests and the most likely target of a users search. Thoughts? --BenouldTC 14:45, 8 August 2008 (EDT)

Well, we seem to have a page for every other bar and tavern in the game, even if there's no quest significance whatsoever. I just figured somebody would create it eventually. Doesn't matter much to me, but the place does exist, so it should probably be at least mentioned... --TheRealLurlock Talk 14:56, 8 August 2008 (EDT)
Well, no biggie for me either, it's just the place has nothing, where the others at least have a trainer, beds and such things. I am in no rush to create the page ;) --BenouldTC 15:06, 8 August 2008 (EDT)

[edit] Slave Bracers

Whoopsie, didn't realize there was already an icon for those. I looked around (not too hard, obviously) and didn't find an existing image, so I uploaded my own. Thanks for the assist! – KJR1012 Talk Email Contribs 11:47, 12 August 2008 (EDT)

No problem. You might want to check out Unused Files - there's several icons in there that aren't being used. Not sure if they're already duplicated or not, but that's one place to look. If you see any more duplicates, you might want to propose one for deletion. --TheRealLurlock Talk 13:15, 12 August 2008 (EDT)
Geez, I didn't know there was a whole page for unused files. I've gone through and 'prod'ed duplicate and unnecessary Morrowind images (at least those that I created/dealt with), and found a few things to fix, as well. – KJR1012 Talk Email Contribs 06:31, 13 August 2008 (EDT)

[edit] M'aiq knows of knowledge unknown to him

If a quick lesson could be crammed into your time, I would be most grateful. Would you leave a quick explaination on my talk page on the organisation, easy placement, creation and image selection of userboxes and a comparison to what I'm already doing with them? Most appreciated, -M'aiq the Liar

The problem is that some of the images are slightly larger than others, which makes them not line up nicely. In particular, the Faction templates don't seem to like to play nicely with others. I'd fix them, but there's dozens of them - one for every rank of every faction in two games (which was always way more than I believed to be necessary...), and I don't really care enough to bother. I've found that a height of 40 pixels seems to work best. Of course, since you can't directly set the height, only the width, you'll need to tweak the numbers around, particularly on vertically oriented images. When all else fails, though, the easiest method by far to keep things nice and lined up is to put them in a table. That way it doesn't matter if some images are larger than others, because the table will take care of the gaps. --TheRealLurlock Talk 11:22, 21 August 2008 (EDT)

[edit] Userboxes

Do you remember instructing me on how to change the text of a userbox? Well, I'm trying it now in my sandbox and it doesn't work... Well, could you explain why? =D --Lord Walter Thibault 12:51, 31 August 2008 (EDT)

Sorry, that's a special feature I built into the Nationality userboxes (and a few others, I think), and it's not implemented on most of the others. I suppose it'd be nice to do so at some point in the future, but presently they're not set up that way. What specifically are you trying to do? (Didn't feel like fishing through the sandbox to figure it out.) Right now, in order to change the text in most other default userboxes, you'll have to forego using the template and reproduce the userbox manually with the altered text. --TheRealLurlock Talk 00:45, 1 September 2008 (EDT)
Ah... okay... well... maybe I can try to make those templates work with custom text too? Well, it's worth a try! =D Thanks anyway! --Lord Walter Thibault 04:00, 1 September 2008 (EDT)
Nope... can't find a way to make it work... well... hope someone can do it... --Lord Walter Thibault 13:24, 1 September 2008 (EDT)

[edit] Still Alive

Just in case anyone's wondering. I've recently moved (not far, but far enough to lose my access to the internet, at least temporarily). So between packing, moving, unpacking, various poorly-timed car-related issues, and trying to get the internet hooked up at the new place, I've had my hands full for a while. (For some strange reason, we're not allowed to get the internet set up here in our names. Instead we have to get the landlord to sign up for it in his name, and then pay him for it in addition to the rent. Just one more ridiculous hurdle to overcome.) Anyhow, it should all be over in the next couple of days, and I'll be back online for real instead of leeching off of the neighbor's unsecured wireless router. (Which I can only do from this borrowed laptop, as my desktop doesn't have a wireless device, and the one I've been trying to install for the past 3 days doesn't work at all either.) So in case anyone cares or anything, that's what's going on. Later. 00:47, 19 September 2008 (EDT)

Good to hear from you at last! I hope to see you fully back online soon. –RpehTCE 01:05, 19 September 2008 (EDT)
Well, that's good news! We've missed you 'round here. --GuildKnightTalk2me 02:36, 19 September 2008 (EDT)
Good to hear from you and your return GLaDOS, err... Lurlock. :) --Timenn < talk > 06:28, 19 September 2008 (EDT)

[edit] Trendy Hippo (2)

If you remember my topic about Trendy Hippo, can you tell me when you might get back to the story/game?

Ps: The link is not, er..., linking Helper Unknown 19:36, 22 September 2008 (EDT)

To be honest, the project is kind of in a holding stage right now. I'm working on other projects, including one for a start-up game company which if it succeeds, we may end up starting development on my game at some point in the future. (There are about 3 other games in early development stage that would probably come first, but they've expressed an interest in creating my game in the future.) As for the site being down - I'll have to talk to my webmaster-guy, but I haven't been in touch with him in a while, and I don't think he has much interest in the project anymore. I'll probably end up rehosting the site at some point later on. (Or recreating it from scratch, as the old site was just a big spam-bucket last I looked.) I think I'll want to have someone local doing the webmastering, because at least then I can bug them to get things fixed more easily. I appreciate your interest, but it's possible I went public just a little too early on that. Guess I should update my user page one of these days then... --TheRealLurlock Talk 15:28, 26 September 2008 (EDT)
Thanks for your very detailed answer, Lurlock. Helper Unknown 17:07, 26 September 2008 (EDT)

[edit] Image Size

Link
Reduce the size? As far as I'm aware the default thumbnail width is 180px. Increasing the image sizes to 200px will only make it worse for lower resolutions (1024×768), as it forces that particular size. I agree that with the current layout the text block may be a bit thin for 1024 width, but the other alternative is a large block of white space (if the images use 2 rows). If you have set your thumbnail size to any other setting in your preferences, I feel you do that on your own risk. --Timenn < talk > 13:13, 1 October 2008 (EDT)

I think Timenn's right. Mine appeared at 300px originally, but that's cuz that's what I had my preferences set to. When I reduced it to 180px, everything looked reasonable, even at reduced widths (to a point, of course). --Robin Hood (TalkE-mailContribs) 21:42, 1 October 2008 (EDT)
Well, at my settings (300), they knocked everything down the page unless I spread my browser all the way onto my second monitor. I think we should endeavor to make the pages look good regardless of your thumbnail settings. I'm also pretty sure that 300 at least used to be the default thumb size. (It's not anymore, I just checked with my dummy-account.) What we really need is some way to make pictures sized based on a percentage basis rather than straight pixels, but unfortunately, that's impossible (at least with the current software). Anyhow, if we can't get it looking good at both sizes, then we need to come up with another layout that does work at all sizes. You can't tell people that "you change your settings at your own risk". That's just unacceptable. Maybe if the three images were combined into a single 3-panel image? That would be a reasonable compromise I think. --TheRealLurlock Talk 00:31, 2 October 2008 (EDT)
The default was 180px when I joined, and that was probably about 1.5 years ago, maybe more (I could probably check in my history, but that seems a tedious thing to do <g>). The 3-panel image might work well, but anything else, ultimately, can look ugly if you try hard enough. I'm sure some moron out there will try to access the page from their cell phone or something and it'll still look ugly. :) --Robin Hood (TalkE-mailContribs) 18:18, 2 October 2008 (EDT)
For now I've reduced the image size to 180px, as that is the default value. This is no definitive solution, I'm still playing around with CSS to get something better. My idea is to have the text appear under the images once a certain total image width has been reached.
Making a single image doesn't seem to be a good idea. Combining three images into one image width is too small width for a single Dremora. --Timenn < talk > 10:19, 3 October 2008 (EDT)
You're right...I wasn't thinking of the fact that of course the thumbnail for that triple image would also be reduced to 180px. --Robin Hood (TalkE-mailContribs) 14:45, 3 October 2008 (EDT)

[edit] IRC

Hey you! We've missed you in IRC! Apparently that NickServ guy gets angry when you don't come around for a while, and takes away all your priveleges!  ;) Hope to see you around sometime. Don't be a stranger!  :) --GuildKnightTalk2me 00:05, 14 October 2008 (EDT)

[edit] Awesome userboxes

You have been given a gold star!

Those birthsign userboxes is really nice. Good work! - Goblin lair talk

[edit] Sort Order

Why not just add the {{DEFAULTSORT:{{SORTABLEBASEPAGENAME}}}} code to the trail? –RpehTCE 09:40, 13 November 2008 (EST)

I was unaware of the existence of that feature until too late - I was just looking at Daggerfall:The Werebeast trying to figure out how it sorted correctly when none of the others did... Oh well. They're all done now... --TheRealLurlock Talk 09:43, 13 November 2008 (EST)
