To avoid complications amongst users and to clarify certain topics, here are a list of links regarding Daggerfall:

Daggerfall Download Link
Click on that link which leads to Daggerfall.
You must be at least 17 years-old or older to download Daggerfall.
Daggerfall is a game rated M, as such, Bethesda must acknowledge this and abide by US laws, and put up this age check. And nothing more.

WinRAR
To open the file downloaded, you need WinRAR.
WinRAR can open a wide array of archives. From .rar, to .zip, to .7zip, and many, many more. You just need the free trial of WinRAR.

7zip
Similar to WinRAR, 7zip can open archives of a wide array, and does it's task.

DOSBox
To play Daggerfall (and Arena!) you need DOSBox.* DOSBox is an emulator for DOS programs, which was the platform both Daggerfall and Arena were released for. Normal Computer cannot run these programs. (Windows 95 and up)

* Not exactly. See below.

DFInstall
DFInstall will allow you to install Daggerfall on modern XP systems, with an array of features. Such as selecting it to install Daggerfall to play without the disc and enabling cheat mode. It will also install the patches for Daggerfall and the CompUSA patch. It is still recommended to play Daggerfall via DOSBox as DOSBox fixed many bugs that DFInstall does not. You may be able to run Daggerfall installed by DFInstall via DOSBox however, but I am not sure.

Daggerfall Installation Guide With DOSBox by Freddo.

As quoted by Freddo
Spoiler:
The first thing we should do is to install the game from within DOSBox. So start DOSBox and write the following:
Code:
MOUNT C GAMES -freesize 700
MOUNT D X:\ -t cdrom (X being the letter of your optical drive where the Daggerfall CD is)
D:
INSTALL

If you downloaded the free Daggerfall, then just mount the unpacked DFCD folder as D instead of the second line. For example;
Code:
MOUNT D C:\DFCD -t cdrom -label Daggerfall

(C:\DFCD varies depending on where you unpack the dfinstall.zip file)

Now the installation should begin. Skip the sound settings in the beginning and go straight to the install. The default size is minimum, but change that to huge. Install it to the default path of c:\dagger. The installation will be quite slow because of the mere cycles of 3000, so press CTRL+F12 a couple of times to raise it to 8000 or so, or higher if you're sure that your CPU can handle it.

After this, it's time to configure the sound. For digital, select Sound Blaster 16/AWE32, port 220, IRQ 7 and DMA 1. For MIDI, select Sound Blaster 16, port 388 or MPU-401, port 330. MPU-401 is the better choice of the two, and I recommend using it, but may under some special circumstances not work (mainly for non-Windows users). After this the installation should end.

But not all the files were copied, so lets manually copy those. Write the following in DOSBox:
Code:
CD ARENA2
D:
CD DAGGER
CD ARENA2
COPY *.VID C:

After this, leave DOSBox in the background. We will return to it shortly.

Now it's time to download the extra quests and the patch. Unpack the quests into DOSBox folder\Games\DAGGER\ARENA2 and move/copy the dag213.exe file to DOSBox folder\Games\DAGGER.

As it is now, some of the files in the ARENA2 folder are writeprotected, and the patch doesn't like that, so we have to change that. Go into DOSBox folder\Games\DAGGER\ARENA2 and select all files, choose properties and make sure that "Read-only" is not checked, and then press ok, and you will change the writeprotection on all files.

Now go back to DOSBox and type the following:
Code:
C:
CD..
RESCAN
DAG213

The patch will start to install itself. Answer yes on all the questions. After the patch installation is done, you can exit DOSBox. It's time to do some editing with notepad.

Open Z.CFG in DOSBox folder\Games\DAGGER and make sure that both PATH and PATHCD say c:\dagger\arena2\ and then save the file. (you won't need the CD anymore).

Now open the dosbox.conf file which is where you installed DOSBox and do the following changes:
memsize=16 should be changed to 40. The game uses about 32-34 or so, but it's good to have a safety margin.
core=auto should be work just fine as the dynamic core is rather mature now. However, if you run with the dynamic core on a fast computer you should limit the amount of cycles cause I've seen the jitterbug otherwise. If you stumble upon any problem, then go to the normal core.
cycles=max runs just fine. If you want to run at some specific cycles I would recommend about 20000 - 30000. You should cap it there somewhere if you use the auto/dynamic core with cycles=auto limit 30000.

Then go to the bottom where it says "# Lines in this section will be run at startup." and add the following lines:
Code:
MOUNT C GAMES
C:
CD DAGGER
FALL.EXE Z.CFG

Save the config file as Daggerfall.conf and you're done with that.

If you have problems to get the mouse to work while playing, then press CTRL+F10

Quote over.

If you encounter any problems, be sure to read that thoroughly and make sure you followed every step.

Can I suggest using 7zip instead. It's completely free, so you won't run into any issues once the trial runs out.

Also: if I could sticky this, I absolutely would. Thanks!

@Codex & Dogmantra, thanks, I thought it would be useful to some.

I suggest adding the bundle I created that includes things from quest fixes to tips to multiple install instructions.

Hello,

You should add a link to DaggerfallSetup, because it is the most simple installer for a "Ready to play" Daggerfall (Same comment for ArenaSetup in the Arena DosBox guide Topic).

I have chanced to come across a recent announcement that might prove of interest to Daggerfall players.
Interkarma, the creator of utilities for Daggerfall modding, has launched a new mod titled Ruins of Hill Deep, which is a total conversion of Daggerfall within the TES Universe. Among its features are: a renewed graphic engine with smoothed pixels, a prolonged main quest, hand-made dungeons, many new monsters and loot.
For more information, see the mod's website:

Hey all. I just downloaded all 9 files under the Official patches and Utilities section at http://www.uesp.net/wiki/Daggerfall:Files

WinRar reported damaged or unknown file types for all of them. I tried downloading to different drives, renaming .zip to .rar, and extracting them with WinZip itself, but always get the damaged/unknown error message. Are they still kosher, or am I having a Fail moment here?

As far as I know, you only need to download the first item (this one - link to download), as the others are included in it. It worked perfectly for me, so the download itself isn't broken. I did use WinRar. Which version of WinRar do you have?

Ah ha, that's interesting. I didn't realise the self-contained alt setup file had all the goodies built-in! I skipped past reading about it at the top there because I've already got a DF install in place; however, this looks much better. Plus, I'd like to try out DXL, so this could be just the thing. For the record, I'm on WinRar 3.61 (I think).

Anyway, I assume it's a problem at my end, so I'll try messing around here and report back when/if I resolve it. Thanks again for the tip! :)

There used to be quite a few dedicated Daggerfall websites, but many of them are no longer maintained. However some have been preserved by the Internet Archive's Wayback Machine:
King Svatopluk's Court
The Daggerfall Embassy
Daggerfall Crossroads
Daggerfall review by Theodor Lauppert
Beginner's Guide to Daggerfall
The Essential Site
The Hall of Adventurers
Xanathar's Library
Daggerfools
Ser Arris' Daggerfall Pages
CJY Daggerfall Page

Some are still online:
Daggerfall: An Enthusiast's Guide
The Daggerfall Compendium

[Edit] Forgot that Bethesda also had some useful stuff:
Daggerfall Chronicles
The Solution to the First Dungeon: Privateer's Hold
Daggerfall Chronicles: The Lost Chapters

Here's another site:
http://www.m0use.net/

Apparently, it was hosted by Bethesda and has a certain degree of officialdom.

It's sad looking back at some of Daggerfall, watching how some of the old parts of this community have turned to dust. We could have gone the way of any of those sites, if a few people had less passion. Never forget that!

Hello !

I think that it's time to refresh the links toward the DaggerfallSetup page.
In English: http://wiwiki.wiwiland.net/index.php?title=Daggerfall_:_DaggerfallSetup_EN
In French: http://wiwiki.wiwiland.net/index.php?title=Daggerfall_:_DaggerfallSetup
In Deutsch: http://wiwiki.wiwiland.net/index.php?title=Daggerfall_:_DaggerfallSetup_DE

For those who don't know, DaggerfallSetup is the best way today to install Daggerfall with all the main official and non official patches and fixes, DOSBOX all configured and the game in four available languages: English, French, German and Russian. :)

The Wayback Machine has preserved a Nuke/Computer Gaming Review feature article about Daggerfall dated 21 June 1996:
http://www.nuke.com/cgr/features/9606/dagger.htm

It's got some nice screenshots and also NPC animations, some appear in higher quality than what was eventually used in the game.

On another note, Mark Jones recently updated his website, including Daggerfall pages:
