As the topic suggests, where do you base yourself, if not Daggerfall? And why?

I've seen some people say they base themselves in somewhere unimportant so as to avoid breaking the law in Daggerfall, Wayrest, or Sentinel, but there must be more interesting reasons than that.

Well there are additional reasons, anyway. I've most recently been using Alcaire because it is a small province, so journey times to and from other locations are very short. Critical for early-on disease problems, to get to a temple. Alcaire city itself has most of the useful shops and guilds. Whitetale town is small and has both Mages' Guild and Fighters' Guilds, in close vicinity to one another. I use those buildings more than any other so this reduces the walking around time, and the 'clear the local residence of animals quests' are also quick. There is no bank, so I have to visit Alcaire City for that and some specialist shops.

Other times of playing the game, I've used similar towns in Daggerfall or it's neighbours. And, in the first few games I played, I wanted a shop that had expensive stuff to rob.

I'm sort of fond of either Daggerfall or Wayrest for shopping reasons alone plus my main bank accounts are in those provinces. I'm still rocking mostly Ebony gear on my main guy with only a couple pieces of Deadric even after completing the game so being able to have the most shops available to me alongside my house in Daggerfall and bank it's the way to go.

But yeah, the Desert towns tend to give better prices for whatever reason, maybe because they are further from the starting area, idk?

Still, Daggerfall feels like home and I'm a creature of habit.

I find myself based in Sentinel at the moment. It's hard, admittedly, to care about any province than the big three, Lhotun seems like the only powerful person left in the Bay who seems at all nice, and it's winter where I am at the moment, so the desert scenes make me feel slightly warmer.

I only have version 1.0, so I can join every temple, and knightly order. I pick a city in every "county" that has a knightly order and do a big circle around the provinces. It feels great to have a list of 22(i think) factions in your stat sheet.

Been a while, but it's a worthwhile topic and as someone not yet even level 10 it's a newbie pov. I'm playing a kind of custom spellsword style character with Daggerfall Unity (with a few modernization mods and a bunch of immersion mods)

I ended up, after much exploring, wandering, and for the my first playthrough settling in Holham, Daggerfall. It's near the West side of Daggerfall so most travel quests are Eastward. That's nice when trying to collect a few quests to do in a single outing. That does take some juggling but worthwhile (especially as a Unity player using TravelOptions mod )

  • It has a Fighters Guild, Mages Guild and Bank.
  • Not far away Northward in Galloford is a General Store and Armorer of low quality (max sell value)
  • A little further away (but the opposite direction) is Graybeth which has an Order of Arkay (the order I joined)
  • About the same distance is Stokworth (but perpendicular to the other two, Eastward though so I can hit it up as I depart on a quest run), which has a Palace and Thieves Guild (I didn't intend to get
  • sucked into the Thieves Guild, it just kind of happened.).
  • Unfortunately, a low Alchemist is kind of far away (Aldingward Wood). I haven't yet needed Gem Store or Book Seller so haven't investigated where they are.

So that's all the major stuff fairly close by, which was kind of important when instant fast travel isn't a thing.
