Carius Runellius investigates a murder

Carius Runellius is an Imperial guard, and a member of the Bruma City Watch. He is the chief investigator during the quest A Brotherhood Betrayed. Carius is convinced Bradon Lirrian is a vampire, and thinks Erline is in denial.

Carius starts out inside the Lirrians' house, and patrols the area 24 hours a day. When you show him Gelebourne's Journal he will rush out of the house and, after an hour, show up at Olav's Tap and Tack, waiting for the player to arrive. After the quest, he will settle down into a usual daily routine. He sleeps from midnight to 7am in Bruma Castle Barracks. He spends his day patrolling the northeastern part of the Great Hall and at 11am he takes a two-hour lunch break inside the barracks.

As a guard, he wears the usual chainmail boots, gauntlets and greaves along with the Bruma cuirass and shield, and wields a silver longsword. He is one of the few people with random lower class clothing, and also carries a small amount of gold. The two keys he carries, a Castle Bruma key and a Castle Bruma Interior key, allow him access to Castle Bruma.

A Brotherhood Betrayed[edit]

When you first encounter him in Bradon Lirrian's House, he will ask you to leave, even though you're not trespassing:

"You're going to have to leave. This is a crime scene and no one other than ourselves or Raynil Dralas will be allowed access."
Raynil Dralas
"The culprit in this crime has already been dealt with. It's just a matter of wrapping up the details. I'd tell you more, but frankly, I don't know who you are, so I'm not sure that I can trust you with that sort of information." (Disposition below 70)
"I suppose there's no harm in telling you what happened. Word is bound to get around Bruma anyway. Turns out that Bradon Lirrian is a vampire. Or was. If it wasn't for Raynil Dralas, we may never have uncovered the truth. Let me explain. In the last week or so, we've found two bodies stashed in shallow graves outside the city walls. The bodies had puncture wounds on their necks. The bodies were those of some beggars who used to wander the streets looking for handouts. Vampire probably thought no one would miss them. Luckily for us, Raynil arrived in town. He said he was a vampire hunter, so we asked for his help. He tracked the vampire to this house. When he entered the place around noon, Bradon was sleeping. He was able to slay him at that point. Luckily, Bradon's wife wasn't home. Poor thing, she didn't even know her husband was infected. We did a follow up investigation, and it's true that no one recollects seeing Bradon out in the daylight. He's only been spotted at night. I'm afraid there's not much more to tell you. So, you can see we really don't need any help. But thanks for the offer."

On exiting conversation he will encourage you:

"Feel free to question anyone in town, they shouldn't give you too much trouble."

Speaking to him again before talking to Erline will net you:

"I don't know what else to tell you."
"I'm going to make arrangements for removal of the bodies and then I'll probably stay on guard here for a bit. We're afraid there may be retribution on Bradon's wife even though she had nothing to do with it. Vampires are a hated lot."
Raynil Dralas
"I'm impressed. It only took him a day to track the vampire down. I guess that's why he does it for a living."
Bradon Lirrian
"As far as I know, he was a good man. I never saw this coming. But vampires are masters of deception, so I guess it makes sense."

When spoken to, Erline Lirrian will ask you for help and provide some more background on Carius:

"The guards sent for Carius, who is an investigator for crimes here in Bruma."

After you've agreed to help out Erline, he will inquire:

"Oh, you're back."
"So, any new revelations in your... errr.... investigation?"
Bradon Lirrian
"I'm sure Erline is very upset. She'll be safe though; Raynil has confirmed with us that she isn't infected. Her accusations that Raynil is lying is not surprising. At this point, she's so upset that she'll say anything to deny what really happened. I suppose if I found out a loved-one was something as horrid as a vampire, I'd find any excuse not to believe it either."
Raynil Dralas
"I'll warn you about one thing. I understand you wanting to help Erline by checking up on Raynil. We have it on good authority from officials in a neighboring city that Raynil is what he says he is. So I'm not sure what you're trying to prove. I'm only allowing you to do this investigation, and I use that term very loosely, because Erline is so distraught."

On exiting conversation he will mutter:

"Keep up the... ummm... good work, I suppose."

If you find Gelebourne's Journal but don't take it with you, you can ask about Gelebourne but won't make any headway in persuading him of Raynil's guilt:

"How'd you know about that? Agh... too many people don't know how to keep quiet about official matters. Very well. The Skingrad city watch informed us that Gelebourne was killed by Raynil not too long ago. Gelebourne was a vampire as well, obviously."
I disagree.
"What do you mean you disagree? That's a bold statement. What proof do you have that Gelebourne was not a vampire?"
I have no proof with me.
"Then don't go around, flinging accusation and hearsay. If you dare accuse someone of a crime, you must have the proof to back it up. Now, if you believe what you're saying is true, go get me the proof!" (-10 Disposition)

Asking about Gelebourne again without the journal in your possession will further annoy him:

Gelebourne
"What proof of your outlandish accusations have you brought me?"
Still no proof, Carius.
"Sigh. How many times do I have to tell you? No proof, no accusation!" (-5 Disposition)

Once you return with the journal, his tune will change:

I have Gelebourne's journal.
"I... I don't know what to say. It all makes perfect sense now. Why else would Raynil have removed this journal from the crime scene in Skingrad? I heard no mention of a key either. It must have been removed by Raynil from Bradon's body before we arrived. To think that two innocent men were killed, and that I'm responsible for one of their deaths... I... I'm speechless. I will rouse the guard, and begin a search for him in the city. Meet me at Olav's Tap and Tack in one hour."

He will then run off outside. If you manage to talk to him before he leaves he will only say:

"I must go and tell the guard. Please, meet me at Olav's in one hour."

Once you speak to him inside Olav's Tap and Tack, he will approach:

"Just before I arrived here, I received a report from one of our scouts watching the roads. Raynil was spotted heading west out of Bruma. The scout tried to follow, but lost him in the mountains. The only cave to the west that comes close to the one described in Gelebourne's journal is Boreal Stone Cave. That must be where he's headed. You must get there before he acquires whatever artifact is being kept there and makes his escape. I'm keeping the city guard in Bruma, as Raynil doesn't know we're after him. If he sees a guard, he may panic and run. You're my only hope at the moment. Please, you have my authorization to do everything you can to bring him to justice. If he won't surrender, I think you know what to do. Hurry, I fear you have a day at the most to stop him."
Bradon Lirrian
"If all you say is true, Raynil will answer for Bradon's death."
Gelebourne
"Raynil will pay for both crimes. Gelebourne was likely another innocent he's slain. I'll make sure Skingrad's city watch hears of this."
Raynil Dralas
"I can't wait to get my hands on Raynil. He'll become very familiar with Bruma's dungeons; or the end of my blade if he doesn't come peacefully."

When exiting conversation he will spur you on:

"Please hurry, Raynil may make a break for the open road at any moment."

Speaking to him again now, will only net you:

"What is it now?"
"No time to talk now, you must hurry to Boreal Stone Cave!"

At any point after you've entered the cave but not received the Phylactery of Litheness from Erline, he will say:

"You're back. What news do you bring me?"
"I see from your expression that you were successful."

Once you've slain Raynil, he will greet you with:

"Always a pleasure."
Raynil Dralas
"You did what had to be done. There should be no regrets or doubts in your mind about it. Raynil was an evil Dunmer, and he deserved that fate."
Bradon Lirrian
"Although we can't go back and undo what's been done, I feel justice has been served, and Bradon's soul may rest with ease."
Gelebourne
"In your absence, I dispatched a runner to Skingrad to let them know they need to clear Gelebourne's name for the record books. Like Bradon, I think he deserves to have his name clear of wrongdoing."

From that point on, he will start his new routine, and upon ending every conversation with him, he will jokingly suggest you to join the guard faction:

"Have you ever considered a job in law enforcement? Hehehe."

If instead you've let 24 hours pass by and still haven't gone to Boreal Stone Cave, he will leave Olav's and start his regular routine. If spoken to he will say:

"You're back! What happened?"
Bradon Lirrian
"You must avenge his unjust death."
Raynil Dralas
"You haven't gone to the cave yet? Well, what are you still doing here?"

He will exit conversation with:

"Please hurry, we must know of Raynil's whereabouts."

Once you've visited the cave and found no trace of Raynil, he will say:

"I see from your expression that you have grave news."
Raynil Dralas
"I've provided Raynil's description to all of the Bruma soldiers and even dispatched his description to guards in other cities. However, I'm afraid he's slipped through our fingers. If he's as crafty as he's been up to now, he's probably halfway to Vvardenfell."

If asked about Raynil and Bradon after this, he will say:

Raynil Dralas
"I'm sorry, there's been no sighting of him yet. Don't know if there ever will be..."
Bradon Lirrian
"It's ashame that there will be no retribution for Bradon and Gelebourne's deaths, but such is the way of things. I know you did your best."

Unused Dialogue[edit]

  • You won't hear the following lines meant for when you approached him or exited conversation as he will be busy either force greeting you or running off: "Halt!", "I can't speak to you right now.", "I must hurry, excuse me." and "I've much to tell you."
  • You also won't hear the following lines as Carius will instead reverts to standard guard greetings and hellos after the quest: "What brings you to me this day?", "Sorry." and "I'm sorry, there's nothing else you can assist with at this point."
