North of Vernim Woods along the main road, you'll see a campfire with a distraught Nord who is thinking out loud:

"Did you really come here, father? Why?"

Helfhild is looking for his father and hopes that he is still alive in the area even though it is filled with bears:

"Greetings. I don't suppose you know a man named Kalodar? He's my father.
He left on a hunting expedition years ago, promising to return in a few months. My mother gave up on him, but I never have."
Sorry, no. You think he's out here?
"Perhaps only his remains, but I'd like to know. A local claims to have known a trapper by that name who hunted in these hills. It might have been him, but I'm no fighter and this region is thick with bears."
And you want me to look for him.
"Please! My mother believes he abandoned us, but I know my father better than that.
Anything you can find out would help erase this uncertainty."
I'll look.

Speaking to her again:

"The locals claim my father hunted bears and other animals in these hills. There must be some clue nearby."

Northwest of Helfhild's camp you'll find another camp, but this one is abandoned. All that's left are some bones and Kalodar's Letter. If you return to her before reading the letter:

"No sign of my father yet?"

Return to Helfhild after you picked up the letter, she will be at peace that her father left her family to protect them from the threats of creditors:

"You look like you know something of my father. Tell me."
I found his remains … and this letter addressed to you.
"I suppose I always knew he wasn't coming back. But this letter …. He left us to keep us safe. "I will sing of you in the halls of Sovngarde." Oh, father ….
Thank you. I have peace at last."

After the quest, she'll stay at her camp:

"I think I'll stay out here a while longer, since this is as close to him as I'll ever get."
