"I've had plenty of work since I took over from the last smith. His steel failed him on the day he found himself surrounded by bloodthirsty pirates. Now he feeds the slaughterfish.
But my steel won't fail you. Care to take a look?"

"Keep an eye on the wharf rats. Half of 'em are pirates between ships. They're always looking for a chance to stick a knife in someone for some easy coin.
Speaking of coin, are you buying or selling?"

"Need a good blade, mainlander? Maybe an axe? Never know when you might run into a band of desperate pirates around here. Best to be ready for 'em."

Asking about pirates in the area:

Are pirates a problem around here?

"Ha! Got you, didn't I?
Look at these ramparts. No pirate ship's ventured within the sight of the Gonfalon Colossus in twenty years or more. And if any pirates did set foot on High Isle, there are at least three knightly orders ready to thrash'em."

Then why are you going on about pirates?

"It impresses Tamsfolk fresh off the boat. They like to pretend the Systres are made up of lawless ports and wild islands. So I sell'em good steel for protection. Against pirates. Ha!
Mind you, the steel's good. That's no stretch of the truth."
