Vanus Galerion

Vanus Galerion, also known as the Great Mage, is the founder of the Mages Guild and one of the most famous users of magic in the history of Tamriel. His rival is Mannimarco: the King of Worms, the leader of the Worm Cult and your executioner.

You'll encounter Vanus several times during your adventures in Tamriel. He plays a major role in the base game's main story, and also guides you through the Summerset prologue quest. You'll also see a vision of him during the Mages Guild questline and on Artaeum.

Quest-Related Events[edit]

Circus of Cheerful Slaughter[edit]

A vision of Vanus at the Circus of Cheerful Slaughter

A flashback vision of Vanus is created by Sheogorath in the Circus of Cheerful Slaughter, speaking to Valaste:

Vanus Galerion: "You have a rare mind, Valaste. Not once in a century is a Mer with your talent born. We have accepted your application to join our august and storied Mages Guild."
Valaste: "This is the proudest day of my life, Guildmaster. Thank you."

He can later be seen saying:

Vanus Galerion: "Sheogorath is so much smarter than I am …. I'm like a child before him …."

Messages Across Tamriel[edit]

Vanus Galerion on Stirk

If you have completed the Council of the Five Companions, Vanus will come to you once you have reached a safe area—-like a city.

Vanus Galerion: "Ah, good! I found you! Speak with me a moment, if you would."

If you walk away and ignore him, he will instead tell you to meet him at your Capital City:

Vanus Galerion: "Fine, be about your business. I shall be in [CITY], waiting for you!"

Otherwise can then speak with him to find out what he wants.

If you're a member of the Mages Guild:
If you're not a member of the Mages Guild:
"Greetings, Adept. Good to see you in person. I am Vanus Galerion, head of the Mages Guild you so ably serve. I have need of your assistance."
"Greetings! I am Vanus Galerion, head of the Mages Guild. I have need of your assistance."
My assistance?
"Yes, it's high time Tamriel was free of Molag Bal's grip. The Anchors, the Daedra, the undead … they devastate our fragile mortal plane.
I have a plan, and I need your help. I think you're the only one who can help me see this done."
What do you want me to do?

Covenant Version[edit]

At this point you will need to go to Wayrest or meet him there later. However you go about it, he can be found near the Wayrest Wayshrine, where he will explain he has a plan to bring the fight to Molag Bal.

"I want you to meet with Copper Dariah, leader of the Ring of Daggers. She'll be at the Mages Guild in Daggerfall city. Even Emeric's personal agents think my idea is sound!
I'll be along shortly, I just have a few final preparations to make."
I'll see you there.
"It's true, no rest for the weary."

After going to Daggerfall and speaking with Copper Dariah, Vanus will arrive after she and Marisette discuss their wagers.

Copper Dariah: "So, what's the bet?"
Marisette: "A hundred gold says there's an attempt on our lives within the week."
Copper Dariah: "That's a sucker bet! The Hidden Armigers have hit us at least once a week for the past three months."
Marisette: "All right. Three hundred says when the Dominion spies contact us, it'll be Cariel, not Razum-dar."
Copper Dariah: "Cariel? That wench knows better than to show her face around me. Mark my words, I'm going to have to hunt her down to slit her throat."
Marisette: "And after you do, that three hundred gold will buy you enough ale to celebrate for a year!"
Copper Dariah: "I'll take that bet!"
Marisette: "And share the ale, if you win. Let's go. We have a lot of work to do."
<Vanus appears through the doors.>
Vanus Galerion: "Apologies for my lateness."
<Copper Dariah and Marisette leave.>

Dominion Version[edit]

If Vanus Galerion gives you the quest directly:

"I want you to meet with Razum-dar, first in the eyes of the Queen. He'll be at the Mages Guild in Skywatch. Even Ayrenn's personal agents think my idea is sound!
I'll be along shortly, I just have a few final preparations to make."
I'll see you there.

Vanus will arrive after Razum-dar and Cariel speak.

Razum-dar: "Job for Cariel!"
Cariel: "No way. Do it yourself."
Razum-dar: "What? Why?"
Cariel: "Thrush is a homicidal maniac, and Copper Dariah? Let's just say I'm not her favorite person."
Razum-dar: "Why is Copper Dariah displeased with Cariel?"
Cariel: "I may have collapsed a building on top of her. Accidentally."
Razum-dar: "Ah, yes. This one forgot about that. Very well Raz will take care of it. And he will send Copper Dariah your warmest regards."
Vanus Galerion: "Apologies for my lateness."
<Razum-dar throws a smoke bomb and disappears.>
Cariel: "Dammit, Raz, not so close!"

Pact Version[edit]

Vanus tells you to speak with Thrush of the Hidden Armigers at the Mages Guild in Mournhold.

"I want you to meet with Thrush, leader of the Hidden Armigers. He'll be at the Mages Guild in Mournhold. Even Jorunn's personal agents think my idea is sound!
I'll be along shortly, I just have a few final preparations to make."
I'll see you there.

Vanus will arrive after Naryu and Thrush speak about their debts.

Thrush: "Turns out I'm glad you came, Virian. I'm calling in that favor."
Naryu Virian: "You mean you called me here without knowing if you needed me, Thrush? Ugh. What's the favor?"
Thrush: "I need you to contact the other spy networks, the Eyes of the Queen of the Aldmeri Dominion and the Ring of Daggers in the Daggerfall Covenant."
Naryu Virian: "Contact. You do mean with the tips of my daggers. Repeatedly. Right?"
Thrush: "No, no, this is a diplomacy thing. No killing."
Naryu Virian: "Waste of a favor, Thrush. Should've asked for something your lackeys couldn't do. We're even after this, you know."
Thrush: "I know, but this is important. Thanks, Naryu."
Thrush: "I'll even ride with you as far as Auridon. Let's go."
Vanus Galerion: "Apologies for my lateness."

His Plan[edit]

Vanus will explain he had been discussing his plan with the Fighters Guild leaders.

"Thank you for coming so quickly, champion.
I've been consulting with Countess Hakruba of the Fighters Guild. Both of our guilds believe the time has come to take the fight to Coldharbour, but this places us in a delicate political position."
What's the problem?
"Trust, as always. The alliance leaders will never agree to join forces, and if our guilds only work with one alliance, the other two will see it as a betrayal.
For both guilds, our neutrality is our strength. We can't afford to take sides."
Is the situation really that dire?
"The war in Cyrodiil has been long and bloody, and all three alliances are spread thinly. They can't commit resources to an assault on Coldharbour without making themselves vulnerable.
I want to bring all three leaders together. Maybe cut a deal."
What do you need from me?
"You're in a unique position. You can speak with authority, but you're not an alliance leader. You're respected. You have a reputation. They may let you get a word in before they leap at each other's throats.
In short, you're the perfect diplomat."
You want me to speak with the alliance leaders?
"I found the perfect meeting place. A neutral location, far from disputed territories—an island called Stirk.
I can get you an audience with each leader, and provide magical transportation. You just need to convince them to travel to Stirk."
I'll do my best.
"That's all I ask.
I'll open the portal. I think it's best that I travel with you, and make introductions as a neutral party. That might make things easier."

If you speak to him before entering the portal, he'll say:

"While others handle the preparations on Stirk, you and I have the most important job."

Convincing High-King Emeric[edit]

King Emeric is the second leader you'll speak with if you're a member of the Pact, and the first one you'll speak with as a member of the Dominion.

Vanus Galerion: "Esteemed High King Emeric, I thank you for agreeing to this meeting. I would not presume to waste your time without good reason."
High King Emeric: "We've known each other for some time, Master Galerion. You aren't known for your capricious whims. Tell me though—who is your companion?"

If you're on a character in the Aldmeri Dominion:

Vanus Galerion: "Your Majesty, this is Queen Ayrenn's personal representative, here to speak with you about the impending Coldharbour crisis."
High King Emeric: "So Queen Ayrenn sends her personal champion into the stronghold of her greatest enemy? Either she has a lot of faith in you, or she's trying to get you killed. Hm. I'm intrigued. Come, let us speak."

If you're on a character in the Ebonheart Pact:

Vanus Galerion: "Your Majesty, this is Skald-King Jorunn's personal representative, here to speak with you about the impending Coldharbour crisis."
High King Emeric: "The Skald-King sends his personal champion into his enemy's stronghold? Either he has a lot of faith in you, or he's trying to get you killed. Hmm. I'm intrigued. Come, let us speak."

After you speak with Emeric as a member of the Dominion, Vanus will tell you about King Jorunn.

"That went well, I think. Shall we move on?"
Where to next?
"To Mournhold, where Skald-King Jorunn is waiting for us. I'm given to understand that his palace is inaccessible at present, and for a variety of reasons the Tribunal Temple is…inappropriate.
He's offered to meet us at the guild plaza. Shall we?"

Convincing the Jorunn the Skald-King[edit]

After explaining his plan, Vanus will have created a portal next to him to Mournhold where he will walk up to Skald-King Jorrun to begin introductions, only to be interrupted.

Thrush: "Watch yourselves, outsiders. Give us a good reason, and the Armigers will cut you down where you stand!"
Hopper: "We'll burn you …."
Longfin: "Freeze you …."
Scathecraw: "And shatter you …."
Thrush: "Any questions? I didn't think so."
Vanus Galerion: "Honored Skald-King, I am here with the personal champion of Queen Ayrenn/High King Emeric …."
Thrush: "You dare to bring a Dominion/Covenant lapdog here?"
Jorunn the Skald-King: "Silence, Thrush! Master Galerion, please continue."
Vanus Galerion: "My companion hopes to speak with you about the impending Coldharbour crisis."
Jorunn the Skald-King: "I have heard tales of this one. The Skald-King favors the bold, even among his enemies! Come, champion. let us speak."

After you speak with Jorunn as a Covenant member, Vanus will tell you about Queen Ayrenn.

"That went well, I think. Shall we move on?"
Where to next?
"Elden Root. We should have a somewhat warmer reception there, as I have known Queen Ayrenn for quite some time.
That being said, I expect that she'll be accompanied by heavily armed guards. Ayrenn is friendly, but not foolish."

Convincing Queen Ayrenn[edit]

Queen Ayrenn is the first leader you'll speak with if you're a member of the Pact.

On you arrive in the throne room of Elden Root, Vanus will walk up Queen Ayrenn on the dias.

Vanus Galerion: "Greatly Esteemed Queen Ayrenn Arana Aldmeri, it is my great honor to present to you …."
Queen Ayrenn: "Vanus, you're so formal! I remember you the patience you and kindess you showed an awkward freckled waif all those years ago on fair Summerset! You captured this child's heart then, and it remains with you to this day."
Vanus Galerion: "You warm an old man's heart, my Queen. I remember well those halcyon days."
Queen Ayrenn: "As do I, my old friend. Sorry about all these guards. I'm told they're necessary. These are dark days."
Vanus Galerion: "A wise precaution, my Queen. My counsel would be no different. If you'll permit it, my companion would like to speak with you."
Queen Ayrenn: "Ah yes. Let me meet this hero I've so much about. It's not often the heroic deeds of one who, by all rights, should be considered a mortal enemy, reach my ears. Come, let's talk."

After you speak with Ayrenn as a member of the Pact, Vanus will tell you about High-King Emeric.

"That went well, I think. Shall we move on?"
Where to next?
"To Wayrest. Expect a certain level of formality. The court of High King Emeric is often filled with scandalmongers and subversives. Therefore, protocol is the order of the day.
Shall we?"

After the Leaders Agree[edit]

After you convince your last Alliance leader to attend the meeting, Vanus will be ready to return to finalize the preparations.

"I didn't think it possible. Well done! We must return and begin the preparations."
Let's go.
"We have much to do. Come."

Once you have arrived at the Fighters Guildhall, Vanus will explain that was the easy part.

"All three leaders have agreed to join us on Stirk. Now comes the tricky part."
That wasn't the tricky part?
"Individually, the leaders are rational, even reasonable. But get them together, and … well, you'll see soon enough."

The Weight of Three Crowns[edit]

When you approach, he says, "Please, the Alliance leaders are waiting."

If you leave before starting the quest, Vanus will eventually find you and tell you to make your way back to the Guildhall.

Vanus Galerion: "Why did you run off? I was just preparing the portal! Please, return to Mournhold/Wayrest/Elden Root as soon as you can."

You will then automatically start the quest.

You must speak with him to travel to Stirk.

"Everything's been prepared. Are you ready to travel to the summit?"
I'm ready
"Then, with your permission, I'll open the portal to Stirk. May Auri-El's hand guide us all."
Open the portal.

This starts the quest. Countess Hakruba will address Vanus:

Countess Hakruba: "The word has been given."
Vanus Galerion: "A moment, please."
<Vanus opens the portal and speaks to you as he enters.>
Vanus Galerion: "I'll wait for you on the other side."
<The Countess does likewise.>
Countess Hakruba: "Our representative, Captain Alphaury, is in charge of security on Stirk. He assures us that all is well there, but keep your wits about you. Good luck."

Vanus opens a portal to Stirk and walks through it.

Once on the island, he will be waiting for you alongside Countess Hakruba.

"Welcome to the island of Stirk. Representatives from all three alliances are gathering at the meeting place. It's just up ahead, through the ruins."
Have the alliance leaders arrived?
"I'm told they'll be arriving at the meeting site by portal any moment.
After all the bloodshed in Cyrodiil, I fear the leaders won't be quick to trust one another. Perhaps you can help them see the wisdom in cooperation."
I'll do my best.
"I don't envy you the task.
We've already assembled quite a team of experts for the Coldharbour invasion itself. I'll try to introduce you to some of them on the way to the meeting. Lead on!"

With that, you will proceed to Stirk's grounds:

Vanus Galerion: "Two kings and a queen with barely a thimble of patience between them. Reaching a compromise will be no small task, I promise you."

He and Hakruba will become your followers, if you try and speak with him he will just say:

"Let's get to the summit point. Lead on."

Meeting the Experts[edit]

He will first point out Lady Laurent with Stibbons.

Vanus Galerion: "Look, it's Lady Laurent!"

As you approach, she will be yelling at Stibbons.

Lady Clarisse Laurent: "Careful with that, you clumsy fool! Do hurry it up. We're missing everything!"
Vanus Galerion: "I never weary of your charms, Lady Laurent."
Lady Clarisse Laurent: "Vanus Galerion, as I live and breathe! Thank you so much for this opportunity. I had no idea the summit was to be held on the legendary island of Stirk!"
Vanus Galerion: "It seemed a fitting choice. It was here that the leaders of the First Era assembled the All Flags Navy to do battle with the Sload."
Lady Clarisse Laurent: "I can't wait to see what surprises Molag Bal's realm has in store for us!"
Vanus Galerion: "We are waging war, not embarking on a sightseeing expedition, milady."
Lady Clarisse Laurent: "Fear not, Vanus. I can take care of myself and my useless lump of a manservant."
<Lady Laurent walks back to Stibbons.>
Lady Clarisse Laurent: "Stibbons! Haven't you finished tying those bags yet? You really are hopeless."
Vanus Galerion: "Farewell, milady. We must dash. We're expected at the summit"

Further along the path is Telenger the Artificer, it is quickly clear that Vanus and he have an acrimonious relationship.

Vanus Galerion: "Wonderful. It's Telenger."

When you approach the snide remarks intensify.

Vanus Galerion: "Here's Telenger the Artificer, himself! Must it always take a crisis to pull you away from your toys, Telly?"
Telenger the Artificer: "Vanus. Your robes smell of failed experiments and your words of failed wit."
Vanus Galerion: "Tell me, Telly, what Dwemer rubbish pit did you crawl out of this week?"
Telenger the Artificer: "You really must learn to respect your betters, old friend."
Vanus Galerion: "Do let me know when one happens by, won't you?"
<Vanus turns away and leaves.>
Vanus Galerion: "I don't have the time or the energy, Telenger, so I'll bid you good day."

After you will arrive at the Fighters Guild camp and Vanus will point out Captain Alphaury.

Vanus Galerion: "The captain is in charge of security, Alphaury, is over there."
Countess Hakruba: "Captain Alphaury. Has the island been secured?"
Captain Alphaury: "Aye. All ships have been diverted away from the island, and the wards are in place."
Countess Hakruba: "And the alliance leaders?"
Captain Alphaury: "They'll be here any moment. You three should get over there as soon as you can."
Countess Hakruba: "We're on our way. Thank you, Captain."
<Countess Hakruba walks away.>
Countess Hakruba: "We must make haste."

The Summit[edit]

Once you arrive at the meeting point, Caldien will start to announce the leaders as they arrive.

Caldien: "High King Emeric of the Daggerfall Covenant."
<High King Emeric walks to the center.>
Caldien: "Queen Ayrenn of the Aldmeri Dominion."
<Queen Ayrenn arrives.>
Caldien: "Jorunn Skald-King of the Ebonheart Pact."
<Skald-King Jorunn takes his place.>

If you speak to Vanus during the meeting, he says:

"Let's let the leaders make their opening arguments."

The talks start but swiftly breakdown:

Queen Ayrenn: "We must put aside our differences and work together or this assault is doomed from the start."
High King Emeric: "How do we know this isn't a ruse? A clever plan to divert out forces while your armies take the Imperial City?"
Jorunn the Skald-King: "I thought backstabbing was your favorite tactic, Emeric!"
Queen Ayrenn: "Please! Are you both so arrogant? Your weapons are children's toys compared to the horrors that Molag Bal commands!"
High King Emeric: "I will not wager the future of my people on the word of snow barbarian and an adolescent female. I fear for Tamriel's future if either of you were to sit upon the Ruby Throne!"
Jorunn the Skald-King: "Since when do you care about your people? You never lift a finger except to count your gold!"
Vanus Galerion: "Please, my lords! This bickering is pointless!"
Jorunn the Skald-King: "What a waste of time!"
<Jorunn goes back to his camp.>
Queen Ayrenn: "Obstinate fools, both of you!"
<Ayrenn returns to her camp.>
High King Emeric: "What a mess. Apologies, Vanus, but I'm going to check on my Lion Guard."
<Emeric leaves for his camp.>

After the fiasco, you can speak with the Countess and Vanus. Vanus will not be surprised by the outcome.

"This is going about as well as I expected, unfortunately."
How can we make them see reason?
"Even if we can get them to stop bickering, they'll never agree to send troops to Coldharbour. That would leave Cyrodiil unprotected."
The guilds can lead the attack, but only if all three leaders agree.
"An interesting idea, but they need to stop bickering long enough to consider it.
Why don't you visit each of them in their camps? See if you can reason with them individually."

If you speak with him again, he will say:

"The summit's in your hands. It's up to you to determine how we move forward."

Once you have spoken with the three leaders and got them to consider the idea, you can tell Vanus the news.

"Any luck? Or are they still at an impasse?"
They're considering the idea, but they're not convinced.
"I hope they come to their senses soon. We're going to lose the element of surprise."
They don't trust each other.
"With very good reason! But the sooner they come to an agreement—
Does the air feel strange to you? That's odd. All of a sudden it feels like a storm is approaching."
A storm? Vanus, what's wrong?
"I have an ill feeling about this."

An Unwelcome Guest[edit]

Vanus witnessing Molag Bal

After that portentous comment from Vanus, Caldien begins to cry out.

Caldien: "He … he has arrived! I can't …"
<Caldien crouches down in pain and Vanus runs up to them.>
Vanus Galerion: "Caldien! What's happening?"
Caldien: "Go! Get away from me! Run!"

Caldien's body begins to hovers off the ground, restrained by magic. And then a flash of light blinds you temporarily. As your vision clears, a familiar voice will begin to speak.

Molag Bal: "These are the great leaders of Tamriel? Pathetic. But how convenient to have them gathered together in one place, so I can crush them like insects."
<Countess Hakruba rushes at the projection of the Daedric Prince.>
Countess Hakruba: "Molag Bal!"
Vanus Galerion: "Stay back, Countess!"
Molag Bal: "The insects fight back! How amusing, and yet so very sad"
Molag Bal: "All of Nirn shall be mine!"
Vanus Galerion: "Caldien!"
"—Who said the Guilds can't work together?"

Molag Bal's projection disappears and Caldien falls to the ground dead. The Countess and Archmage leap into action.

Countess Hakruba: "Protect the leaders! Defeat Molag Bal's minions and close the unstable rifts!"
Vanus Galerion: "I'll do what I can to keep any more rifts from opening, defend me!"
Countess Hakruba: "My pleasure, Vanus. Who said the Guilds can't work together?"

If you try to speak to him before closing the rifts, he'll only say:

"Caldien …."

Once the rifts and the champions have been destroyed you can return to a dismayed Vanus who realizes the element of surprise is gone.

"I thought we were safe here. Hidden from the enemy. The God of Schemes grows more powerful by the day!"
Then we must act quickly!
"Agreed. There's no time to waste. We must take the fight to him!"
Can you open a portal to Coldharbour?
"Yes, at the Ayleid Well at the center of the island."
Perhaps this attack will convince the leaders to cooperate.
"After that terrible display of power, I don't think they have much choice."

Vanus will then call out to the leaders and give a speech.

Vanus Galerion: "Honored leaders! You have seen the face of our enemy!"
Vanus Galerion: "Molag Bal threatens every living being in Tamriel! The Mages Guild and the Fighters Guild have agreed to join forces to launch an assault on Coldharbour!"
Countess Hakruba: "Trust in us! Sanction our actions! Give us your blessings! We will not let you down!"
High King Emeric: "Vanus is right. The Guilds are our best and only choice. Send them to Coldharbour!"
Jorunn the Skald-King: "I hate to admit it, but I agree with Emeric."
Queen Ayrenn: "As do I. It appears that much of the distrust between out alliances was sown and nurtured by the God of Schemes."
Countess Hakruba: "Molag Bal thrives on deception and chaos, but if you'll forgive me, this Alliance War is of your own making."
Vanus Galerion: "Countess Hakruba. Gather the surviving members of both Guilds in the Stirk Interior. The champion and I will go there now to open the portal."
Countess Hakruba: "We'll be right behind you, Vanus."
<Vanus begins to head towards the valley.>
Vanus Galerion: "The time has come, Champion."
Countess Hakruba: "Let's go!"

If you speak to him on the way to the portal chamber, he'll say:

"This way, the interior of the island has a chamber where I can cast a portal."

Opening the Portal[edit]

Once you enter the Portal Valley you will hear Vanus say a quick prayer.

Vanus Galerion: "Stendarr protect us all."

When all the people heading for Coldharbour are gathered at the portal location, you can speak with Vanus.

"We're as ready as we shall ever be."
Is this everyone?
"Unfortunately, yes. It's not the massive army we'd hoped for, but now that Molag Bal knows we're coming, a smaller group might be our only hope of slipping into Coldharbour undetected."
Let's do this.
"It's difficult to predict where you will emerge once you reach Coldharbour. Be on your guard, my friend."

Vanus will then create the portal and enter it, leaving everyone else to follow.

Vanus Unleashed[edit]

After arriving in Coldharbour, Vanus' location will be unknown until you find a message from his projection. Once you have learnt of his ill-fated attempt to break the Great Shackle and his subsequent capture, you will need to enter The Black Forge, gather his essences and restore them to him. When you find him, Vanus will be in a cage high above the floor.

Vanus Galerion: "Place the essences in the magicka conduits. That should disrupt the binding spell that seals the cage."

Once you have the placed the essences in the conduits, he will be released and the essences will enter him.

Vanus Galerion: "Ah, health and vitality! Welcome back!"
Vanus Galerion: "And now stamina returns. How I've missed you, old friend!"
Vanus Galerion: "Ah, much better! Now follow me out of this foul place! Then we can talk."

Once outside, you can find him looking at the Great Shackle from across a bridge. When you speak with him, he will admit he may have made a mistake before.

"Perhaps I shouldn't have attempted this by myself."
So, this is the Great Shackle?
"Yes, the Great Shackle. Where the Planemeld begins and ends. I thought I could deal with it on my own, but I was wrong.
You have restored me, released me from captivity. With your continued help, we can end this threat once and for all."

Breaking the Shackle[edit]

After rescuing Vanus, he will immediately go into his plan for the Great Shackle.

"The time has come. The Great Shackle must be destroyed."
What can I do to help?
"Stay close and follow my every command. Taking down the Great Shackle—the primary conduit for the Planemeld—requires precision and the careful application of destructive spells.
As it so happens, I am a master of destructive spells."
Let's go destroy the Great Shackle.

You can ask him some questions before moving forward.

"This won't be easy. Is there anything else you want to ask me before we move out?"
What else can you tell me about the Great Shackle?
"What can I tell you that isn't obvious? The Great Shackle is the ultimate version of Molag Bal's Dark Anchors, a massive weapon capable of completing the Planemeld of its own accord.
It would be a fascinating device if it wasn't so terrifying."
Is there a plan you want to share with me?
"They wanted to use my energy to power the Shackle. That indicates to me that the Shackle utilizes some form of energy.
Disrupting that flow of energy may be key to destroying the Great Shackle. I'll know more once we get inside."
Then let's get moving.

As you follow him across the bridge he will talk about the shackle.

Vanus Galerion: "The Shackle sends metaphysical chains of energy across the planar chaos to latch onto our world."
Vanus Galerion: "While the Dark Anchors have been able to pull portions of Nirn into Coldharbour, the Great Shackle has the power to steal our entire world."

When he arrives at the warded door, he will attempted to break it.

Vanus Galerion: "A barrier spell on the door? How pedestrian! Give me a moment and I'll open the way."
<Vanus starts levitating and casts the spell.>
Vanus Galerion: "I must be weaker than I thought. That took a lot out of me. Once we get inside, you take the lead."

Once inside the Great Shackle, Vanus will start following you around. When you talk to him here or prior to entering, he will just say:

"Lead on. I'm right behind you. Let's see what secrets this installation holds."

As you descend the first flight of stairs, he says:

Vanus Galerion: "I need to conserve my energy for dealing with the Shackle, so I leave the hacking and slashing up to you."

He may chide you if you enter combat. This dialogue is ambient, and has no subtitles.

Vanus Galerion: "Don't take too long with these ruffians. We need to hurry."
Vanus Galerion: "Are you purposely looking for trouble or are you just as blind as a dead cave bat?"
Vanus Galerion: "Watch out, they're trying to surround you."

When you pass through the first doorway, he says:

Vanus Galerion: "We need to locate the source of energy that provides the power for the shackle."

When you enter the room with the Magicka Conduit:

Vanus Galerion: "Remarkable! This could be what we were looking for."
Vanus Galerion: "Very interesting. It appears to be similar to the cage I was imprisoned in at the Black Forge. Examine this pedestal and tell me what you make of it."

You can speak with him about the conduit.

"I believe that this is another one of the magicka conduits. How fascinating!"
What do you think this thing is?
"This contraption resembles the device I was imprisoned in. It draws life force from the imprisoned creature to power the Shackle.
If we can reverse the flow of energy, we should be able to return the stolen life force to that poor creature."
Reverse the energy flow. Got it.
"I believe that the other conduits are located on the walkway above us. The passage on the other side of the chamber looks like it might lead upstairs."
What are you going to do?
"I am going to finish my examination of this device, of course. Then I'll determine what our next move must be."

When you touch the conduit:

Vanus Galerion: "No! What have you done! Oh, wait. You reversed the energy flow. Good work! Now go upstairs and find the other conduits."

Before you go upstairs, you can ask Vanus some questions about the conduit. The questions are the same as above.

"Well done! You reversed the flow of energy. Find the other conduits and let's return the stolen life force to that poor creature."

After you you use the conduits, you can meet Vanus, Cadwell and possibly Sage Tirora and Treva outside the door to the Mooring.

"I never expected that reversing the conduits would cause that poor creature to explode. Ah, well. Live and learn.
This door leads to the Great Mooring. We're almost there!"

The Mooring[edit]

Once you enter the Mooring, Vanus will run up to the Great Shackle, followed by the others.

Vanus Galerion: "Let's move out! The Great Shackle isn't going to destroy itself, you know."
Cadwell: "Have at thee, vile Shackle! We're going to give you a damned good thrashing!"
Vanus Galerion: "Defend me while I cast this extremely powerful and fantastically impressive spell."

As the waves of Dremora and Atronachs come at you will, you will occasionally hear Vanus yell at you.

Vanus Galerion: "Keep them off me! I have to concentrate and even the least distraction can be disastrous!"
Vanus Galerion: "Deal with those creatures! Must I do everything on this mission?"
Vanus Galerion: "It must be electrifying to watch a master such as I while I work."
Vanus Galerion: "I need more time. Don't let those creatures get past you!"

Once the Great Shackle is destroyed, Vanus will congratulate himself, only for Cadwell to chime in.

Vanus Galerion: "I did it. The Great Shackle has been shattered! The threat of the Planemeld is no more!"
Cadwell: "Jolly good! And, as soon as you deal with the planar vortex, everything will be as right as rain!"
Vanus Galerion: "What? Explain yourself, man! What planar vortex?"
Cadwell: "The Shackle formed a planar vortex. Kind of like an Oblivion straw that will suck Nirn right through and into Coldharbour. Quite amazing how I knew that!"
Vanus Galerion: "Enough! We can discuss this back in the Hollow City. I'll open a portal before this entire place collapses on top of us!"

When you enter the portal you will find yourself outside the Mages Guildhall in The Hollow City.

"We have accomplished great things this day, my faithful friend!"
Is the Great Shackle destroyed?
"Was there ever any doubt? Between your skills and my formidable magical prowess, the destruction of the Shackle was a foregone conclusion.
We aren't finished yet, however. Cadwell claims that we have more to do if we are to truly save Nirn."

Army of Meridia[edit]

Vanus will want to head into the Guild Hall to immediately start planning once he arrives in the city.

"I would love to explore this lost city, but apparently we still have much to do. This planar vortex that Cadwell describes concerns me greatly.
Let's head inside and formulate a new plan to deal with this danger."
What are your thoughts on the current situation?
"If what Cadwell says is true, our job isn't finished here. And I'm positive we got the Daedric Prince's attention at the Shackle. He won't be too happy about what we did to his toys.
That means we need to hit him before he hits us."
What do you suggest?
"I need to consult with my colleagues in the Mages Guild. We need to gather whatever information we can on this planar vortex. I hate going into a situation blind."
Anything I can do to help?
"Let the mages inside know that I'll be joining them in a moment. I need to finish with Cadwell and the Groundskeeper first.
I don't know about you, but I find them both to be more than a little … peculiar."

Before you go inside, speak to him again:

"Please inform the mages that I'll be with them shortly. I know they'll be disappointed, but I need to have a few words with the Groundskeeper, first."
Reuniting with the Mages Guild

Once you go inside and speak with the mages, particularly Nalia—who can't believe that Vanus survived, the mer himself will come in and announce himself.

Manis Dral: "Ah, my old friend! I thought we'd lost you."
Nalia: "What? It … it can't be!"
Vanus Galerion: "So good to see you all again, my friends! I'm glad we all made it here safely."
Nalia: "Vanny! You're alive! That's wonderful!"
Vanus Galerion: "Ah, dear Nalia! My heart fills with delight at the sight of you! Yes, I am safe."
Gabrielle Benele: "Where have you been, old friend? Trying to win the war all by yourself again?"
Vanus Galerion: "Well, yes, but I ran into a bit of trouble. Our friend here showed up and lent me a hand."
Nalia: "Well, then, you have our thanks. I'm not sure we could have gone on without … without Vanus …."
Vanus Galerion: "Cheer up, dear Nalia. I'm here now. But our mission isn't finished. We have to destroy the planar vortex and end the Planemeld."
Manis Dral: "Do you have a plan, old friend?"
Vanus Galerion: "I know what we need to do, I'm just not sure how we go about doing it. We need to discuss this with the Fighters Guild. We need a council of war."

When you talk to Vanus after his reunion with his fellow friends, he will assure you.

"I will take it from here, my friend. We have many things to do before we can assault the planar vortex.
Continue to build our forces. I promise we won't march against Molag Bal without you."

The Chapel of Light[edit]

Once you have also rescued King Laloriaran Dynar and gathered enough survivors, a council of war will be held in the Chapel of Light. Vanus can be found at the side of King Dynar. When you speak with him he will mention he has figured out a way to bypass the Chasm to reach the vortex.

"With the slightest amount of assistance from the Mages Guild, I have figured out how to cross the Chasm and reach the planar vortex. The effort, however, will require the work of our combined forces.
King Dynar will explain everything shortly."

After you speak with the king, the meeting will begin.

King Laloriaran Dynar: "Attention, please! I have called you all here because the moment of destiny fast approaches."
King Laloriaran Dynar: "The Great Shackle has been destroyed, but not before a planar vortex was established. We must destroy this vortex before it sucks the very essence of Nirn into Coldharbour."
King Laloriaran Dynar: "The Fighters Guild shall deal with the Chasm's defenders, but blades have little power against magic."
Vanus Galerion: "And that's where my mages come in."
Vanus Galerion: "Out scouts report that some kind of magical fixtures block access to the path across the Chasm. Mages there already work on a way to overcome these fixtures, and we are prepared to lend our strength when the main force arrives."
Sergeant Kamu: "A sound plan. Plays to our unique strengths. But this one wonders, what if the mages can't ridiculous question! Of course my mages can overcome this magic!"
Cadwell: "Ah, magic! The solution to all life's problems. I love magic! It's so … magical."
King Laloriaran Dynar: "I have absolute confidence in Vanus and his mages."
Gabrielle Benele: "Thank you, your lordship. But to be honest with you, I'm not feeling as confident as Vanus about this."
King Laloriaran Dynar: "We shall fight with all our strength. There is no other option. Lives will be lost, but hopefully a world will be saved."
King Laloriaran Dynar: "Know that the Chasm is only the first stage of this battle. The planar vortex abides within the very heart of the Molag Bal's lair."
Darien Gautier: "Oh, this just gets better and better!"
Gabrielle Benele: "Darien! Mind your tongue!"
King Laloriaran Dynar: "Darien only seeks to lighten a tense situation. Still, we have to try. To do nothing is to doom Tamriel to certain destruction."
Darien Gautier: "Well, when you put it that way, there are a lot of lovely ladies that need to be saved …."
Vanus Galerion: "Yes, well, be that as it may, we launch our assault on the Chasm immediately. The King needs to talk to the champion and I must discuss some final details with the mages. The rest of you have your own preparations to see to, I'm sure."

Vanus and everyone else will leave the Chapel, leaving only you and King Dynar.

Crossing the Chasm[edit]

Once Molag Grunda is dead, Vanus will appear through the door.

Cadwell: "Well, that was disappointing. Hardly worked up a sweat!"
Cadwell: "I'm more than ready to get out of this awful place. Meet me outside, there's a good chap."
Vanus Galerion: "Well done! With Molag Grunda defeated, the entirety of the Chasm is now under our control."
Vanus Galerion: "Gathwen is rounding up the troops. I asked her to keep an eye on Darien, as well. He's a terror with a sword, but sometimes I think he takes too many chances."
Vanus Galerion: "Meet me outside. We have things to discuss and I find these Daedric halls extremely distasteful."

You can follow Vanus and Cadwell outside to the Orchard Wayshrine.

"While you were lollygagging, we secured the area."
So the Chasm is clear?
"You did well, my friend. Thanks to your efforts, we control the Chasm and can freely move troops between the Hollow City and the front lines.
Take a moment to collect your thoughts, then come see me again. This gauntlet we must run is far from over."

The Harvest Heart[edit]

If you don't start the next mission immediately, you can hear him complain:

"Vampires! Why did it have to be vampires?"

He will explain that vampires are causing a problem for the mission:

"As soon as you're ready, we have another mission that could use your unique approach."
What's the problem this time?
"Vampires. The region beyond is crawling with them! Worse, anyone we send in there is turned into one of the foul monsters.
And do you see the structure that looms on the horizon? I believe that's one of Molag Bal's infamous Harvest Hearts."
What do I need to do?
"Eager and confident. I like that!
I need you to collect blood from the vampires. It's an integral component in the pacification ritual I will perform. Use the blood to mark their lairs. I'll meet you near the Heart when you're finished."
You can count on me.

When you accept his task, he will wonder why you haven't left already.

"What are you still doing here? The vampires won't bleed themselves, you know."
Why do I need to collect vampire blood?
"I have my preparations to deal with, and you have yours.
The first step is to make sure the ritual targets the correct creatures. Marking the vampires' lairs with their own blood will guarantee this."
And how will the spell pacify the vampires?
"In the most expedient manner possible. The ritual unleashes a magic that tracks down the blood and targets the creatures connected to it."
And then what happens?
"Then the vampires will become mindless beasts, no longer capable of posing any threat.
I've been developing this ritual for years, but I've never had the chance to test it until now. If this works, it could be a major breakthrough against vampirism."
Why is this place called the Orchard?
"Just another of Molag Bal's clever witticisms, I suppose. It's an orchard from which he plucks the fruit of his vampiric creations.
Or something poetic and disturbing like that. But we have a ritual to prepare for."
Tell me more about the Harvest Heart.
"I've read accounts of these foul artifacts. Molag Bal uses them to enslave large communities and to empower specific parts of his divine portfolio.
In this case, I believe the Heart is greatly increasing the rate at which the vampirism spreads."
Can we destroy the Heart?
"Not easily. But that's where my ritual comes in. By the time I finish casting it, the Heart will be no more and the vampires will no longer pose a threat to our forces."

Once you have marked the Vampire Lairs with blood and made your way to the Harvest Heart, you can find Vanus arguing with the vampire that kept pleading with you as you did your task.

Vanus Galerion: "Back foul temptress! I'll hear no more of your lies!"
Virgar the Red: "Such a stubborn Elf! Perhaps your companion will be more willing to listen to reason."

If you speak with him then, he will warn you:

"We can't trust this one. Her pleasing form hides a hideous and powerful monster."

After hearing her proposal, Vanus will be against trusting her.

"You can't seriously be considering her proposal, can you? She's a confounded vampire, for Magnus's sake!"
You don't think we can trust her?
"She's an elder vampire! Setting those monsters free will be like ringing the dinner bell in a Nord feast hall before the meal is ready!
Her so-called children see us as food and nothing more. The only logical solution is to perform my ritual."
I'll help you turn the vampires into mindless beasts.
"Of course you will. No other decision makes any sense.
I'll follow you into the ritual sites. Protect me while I cast my spells and we'll have the army on the move again in no time."
I need to talk to Virgar the Red before I make a decision.
"Really? You need to consult with a monster before you agree to help the great and powerful Vanus Galerion?
Oh, very well. Do what you must. I'll wait here until you reach a decision."

At this point you will have choice to either side with Vanus or Virgar.

Siding with Vanus Galerion[edit]

After you agree to help Vanus with his plan and he tells you to protect him during the ritual, you'll respond

Stay close and follow me!

If you exit the area, he will quip:

Vanus Galerion: "I'm sure you know where you're going, but we still have work to do in the Orchard."

At both ritual sites, Vanus will move to the center and begin to cast:

Vanus Galerion: "I'll start the ritual. Get ready to defend me."

Once you've fought off the hordes and Vanus finishes, he'll say:

Vanus Galerion: "Good job! You held them back long enough for me to complete this portion of the ritual."

After the two ritual sites, you will need to return to the Harvest Heart, where Vanus will need you for the next part of the ritual.

Vanus Galerion: "Come. I need to explain the next steps to you. At this, we can't afford for anything to go wrong."

Hearing him out:

"Nice work out there. Now that we've prepared all of the spell components, I can finish performing the ritual.
The threat these vampires pose will soon be over."
What do you need me to do?
"The black blood flowing from the Harvest Heart binds the vampires to Molag Bal. But it also gives us a connection we can take advantage of.
While I provide the power to destroy the minds of the vampires, you must sever the connection to Molag Bal."
And how do I do that?
"Find the Lord of Schemes' binding totems and destroy them. They're spaced evenly around the Harvest Heart.
As each totem breaks, the vampires will be separated from Molag Bal and the energy of my spell will flow into them, wiping their minds clean."

If you try to speak to him before destroying the totems, he'll only say:

"We're almost done. Just destroy those totems."

Circle around the heart and destroy the totems. Return to Vanus and he'll shout:

Vanus Galerion: "The Harvest Heart is destroyed!"

Speak with him to progress.

"You did an excellent job! Thanks to you, I was able to complete the ritual and end the vampiric threat once and for all."
So now our forces can move freely through the Orchard?
"Yes. Thanks to your efforts and my remarkable magical talents, we've turned these vampires into mindless beasts. They won't give us any more trouble.
This brings us one step closer to the planar vortex and ending the Planemeld."

If you speak to him again, he'll say:

"The Harvest Heart has been destroyed and the vampires are no longer a threat to our forces.
All in all, I'd say we earned our pay this day. Thanks for your help, my friend."

Siding with Virgar the Red[edit]

Despite helping Virgar, Vanus will contribute to the final part of the ritual. If you ask him about it, he will say:

"I've prepared the ritual site, and I'll assist the vampire with her spell. But if she betrays us and our world is destroyed, I'll never speak to you again."

While you destroy the binding totems to the Heart, Vanus will assist with the ritual. If you try and talk to him, he will just say:

"It's too late to change our minds now. Destroy those binding totems and leave us to our work!"

Once it is done, Vanus will call out to you.

Vanus Galerion: "The Harvest Heart is destroyed!"

If you talk to Vanus he will mention wanting to test the effects of his planned ritual.

"I hope this was all worth it. I was so looking forward to turning their minds to jelly."

After you have spoken with Virgar he will hope you made the right call.

"Thanks to you, the vampires are no longer controlled by Molag Bal. I hope we don't live to regret this outcome."

The Citadel Must Fall[edit]

After passing through the Orchard, you can find Vanus with other members of the army just outside the citadel. As you approach you will find him talking to a familiar Dremora.

Vanus Galerion: "Be gone [sic], foul creature! We don't have time for your games."
Lyranth: "Mortals are always so amusing. I offer information, aid for your quest and you shun me."
Vanus Galerion: "You expect me to trust a creature of the planes? Ridiculous!"
Lyranth: "A mer as arrogant as a kyn. How delightful! I do so love watching egotistical braggarts stumble."
Lyranth: "I may allow you to reconsider and accept my offer. Of course, I may not. I haven't decided yet."
<Lyranth teleports away.>
Vanus Galerion: "You there. Find out where that creature is lurking. I want her watched."

If you talk with Vanus afterwards, he will grudgingly admit that the vampires kept their word.

"Well, so far the vampires have remained true to their word. They allowed us to pass through the Orchard without any resistence [sic].
I wonder how long our good fortune will last?"

Otherwise he will say.

"We were able to overcome the vampiric snare of the Orchard. I expect we'll handle the Reaver Citadel with equal aplomb."

After starting the quest with King Dynar you can ask him about the visitor:

Was that a Dremora you were talking to? (Appears once The Citadel Must Fall is started)
"Oh, you saw that exchange, did you? Why does every extraplanar creature I meet want to talk to me? Am I wearing a welcome sign around my neck? Do I look like I carry Dremora snacks in my pockets?
Where is the respect for my rank and my station?"
She may have had important information to share.
"And she may have been sent to provide false information. To lead us blindly into an ambush—or worse!
No, we shall not deal with Dremora, especially in this place. I ordered one of the fighters to keep an eye on that one."

Once you have collected and activated the four portal stones in the old Mages Guild building, Vanus will arrive through the portal.

"You did it again, my fearless friend! Well done!
With the Dremora caught between my powerful mages and King Dynar's relentless fighters, they won't know which way to turn."
The two-pronged attack is under way. What's the next step?

You will need to take out the Valkynaz in charge of the citadel:

"The Mages Guild and the Fighters Guild will complete the conquest of the Citadel. But we need someone to storm the pyramid stronghold and deal with the leader of this installation, Valkynaz Seris.
That someone, my friend, is you."
Take out the Valkynaz, got it.
"Your common vernacular aside, that is indeed the critical task. Valkynaz Seris has a key to the Labyrinth. Eliminating the Valkynaz and obtaining that key are critical components to our success here."
I have other questions.
"Your curiosity knows no bounds! Very well, ask away."
What is the Labyrinth?
"Part of Molag Bal's stronghold. It's a maze of tunnels that lead to the Endless Stair.
No doubt the path is littered with traps and dangers, but we must push on. Cadwell tells us that the portal to the planar vortex awaits us at the Endless Stair."
Who is Valkynaz Seris?
"As far as I can tell, he's a trusted servant of Molag Bal. Not only does he command the forces of this Citadel, but he also has access to the Dark Lord himself."

Speak to him before leaving and he'll say:

"Cadwell says that the area beyond the pyramid is known as the Labyrinth. We'll need to go through there to reach the Endless Stair and the planar vortex.
Just keep your wits about you. The Valkynaz is a dangerous opponent."

You can find Vanus at the Endless Stairs portal before collecting the key. He'll only say:

"Our forces have gathered and are ready to move. We need to find the planar vortex and end the Planemeld once and for all."

After you have stormed the pyramid, slain and retrieved the key, you can find Vanus just to the north, down the road with some of the other amassed forces.

"I hope you brought the key. We're ready to make the final push, but we're finished if we can't get inside.
This is our last chance to save our world. It's all or nothing now."
I have the key that opens the way to the Labyrinth.
"How odd that the Dremora aided us against her kyn and Molag Bal. She must have had a powerful thirst for vengeance.
Anyway, it appears as if we are once again in your debt. Thank you, my brave friend."

The Final Assault[edit]

The Initial Attack[edit]

If you approach him outside of dialogue, he'll say:

"I just hope our friend was able to recover the key to the Labyrinth, or all our efforts will have been for naught."

With the key in hand, the attack force is ready for the final push.

"Our forces have gathered and are ready to move. We need to find the planar vortex and end the Planemeld once and for all."
I have the key to the Labyrinth.
"Well done! Then we still have a chance!
We sent in a small force to cause a distraction. They probably won't survive, but they should keep the enemy busy while we get the rest of our troops inside. We need to make sure their sacrifice isn't in vain."
What do you want me to do?
"We want you to get in there and open the Labyrinth before we send in the entire force and reveal our numbers.
Hahnin and Gabrielle can brief you on the battle plans for the Fighters Guild and Mages Guild strike teams that will follow after you."
I'll speak to Hahnin and Gabrielle.

Speaking to him again:

"After you receive your briefings from Hahnin and Gabrielle, select a soldier to accompany you on your mission. Choose carefully, for our plan hinges on you opening the way into the Labyrinth.
This is our last strike. Make it count."

Once you have spoken the two guild commanders, Vanus will remind you that you need to pick a companion. You can ask him if can join you.

"You must decide which companion to take on the initial assault. You need to travel light and move quickly, for speed is essential.
Each of these soldiers has worked with you before. You know what each of them can do and who will serve you best."
I think you'd be the best choice to aid me.
"That goes without saying, but King Dynar needs me with the main force during the initial assault. My portals are the best way to move our troops around.
Perhaps once we clear the way to the Labyrinth I'll be able to join you."
Do you think we have a chance?
"What I think doesn't matter. What we do, however, will make all the difference.
We need to find the portal to the planar vortex. If we don't make it that far, nothing will stop Molag Bal from taking our world."

After you have entered the Endless Stair and sealed the portal, you can head towards the Labyrinth Entrance where Vanus will teleport in.

Vanus Galerion: "As soon as I sensed that you sealed Molag Bal's portal, I figured it was safe enough to follow you."
Vanus Galerion: "Gabrielle has assembled a team of mages and scholars to aid you inside the Labyrinth, as we need all of the fighters for the main assault."

You can talk with him to see what your next set orders are.

"Now that we don't have to worry about overwhelming hordes of reinforcements, we're sending in the main assault force.
While they keep Molag Bal's minions busy, you need to navigate the Labyrinth and find the portal to the planar vortex."
You want me to enter the Labyrinth on my own?
"Of course not. Even I am not so foolish as to enter Molag Bal's inner sanctum myself. Gabrielle and her mages will accompany you inside."
How will I know the planar vortex when I find it?
"Oh, you'll know the source of our world's destruction when you see it. Just find a way through the Labyrinth. And try not to let the deadly traps and horrible monsters kill you.
Now go. And good luck."

After you talk him, he will teleport back to the main assault.

Vanus Galerion: "Don't lose hope, my friend. We're depending on you!"

The Labyrinth[edit]

When you and Gabrielle escape from the Statue Room deep in the Labyrinth, Cadwell will teleport in with Vanus in tow.

Cadwell: "I knew I'd find them here! Interesting. I've never been to this area before but it's … breathtaking!"
Vanus Galerion: "Cadwell, your mastery of portals does you proud!"

You can talk with him to see how the rest of the assault is going.

"Cadwell takes some getting used to, I must admit, but he really is an amazing fellow. He ….
Wait a moment! What happened? Where's the rest of your team?"
The doors sealed behind us. Only Gabrielle and I made it this far.
"Well, the others will have to fend for themselves for the time being. I'll send Cadwell to find them shortly.
Things are looking grim outside, by the way. We've lost many fine men and women already, and the battle is far from over."
What happened?
"Even without his portal, Molag Bal has the ability to throw an unlimited number of forces at us. We're holding our own, but just barely.
Winning isn't our goal, though. We just need to survive long enough for someone to reach the planar vortex."
Who have we lost?
"Far too many. Hahnin was caught by surprise and wiped out, along with a large number of Fighters Guild soldiers. King Dynar's group was also ambushed, but he managed to fight his way out of it. Many were wounded, though.
Time is running out."
How can you just teleport around like this?
"Thank Cadwell for that small favor. I'm not sure how he does it, but I think he's grown so attached to Coldharbour that he's actually become a part of it.
Unfortunately, he can only teleport one other person at a time, and it is a lengthy process."
Let's finish this.
"The portal that leads to the planar vortex is just around the bend. Molag Bal won't let you simply walk up to it, though. He's going to do everything he can to stop you.
I'll provide what help I can—and, as usual, it will be considerable. Now go!"

If you speak to him again, he says:

"You must hurry. Sooner or later, the Lord of Schemes will become aware that we're closer to our goal than his army realizes.
I'll keep this portal open for as long as I can. That should allow us to bring in a few reinforcements of our own."

The Planar Vortex[edit]

Vanus will be one of the allies that Meridia will bring inside the Planar Vortex. You can talk to him before the final stretch.

"Meridia and Molag Bal have always hated each other with a fiery passion, but that hatred has cost so many of our lives.
I have a notion to show them both why Vanus Galerion's power should be feared!"
How do you like our chances?
"Chances? I don't believe in luck or fortune. We'll win this day with blood and magic, or we'll die trying.
I won't lie to you. I doubt we can win this fight. But that doesn't mean we won't try."
We can't fail.
"No, we can't. But we're not the chosen ones. We're not heroes of destiny fated to succeed.
We're simply soldiers—brothers and sisters fighting for what they care about. We're united, and that makes us strong. That's what's important here."
That's why we'll win this fight.
"It's good to know your faith hasn't wavered. These men and women follow you. They face death itself to fight at your side. They will stand with you until the end.
Don't disappoint them."
Talk is cheap. We have no choice but to win.
"Remember who you're talking to, champion! But … you're right.
Know that these people trust you. They'll follow you to the end of the world—and I guess they have. Don't let them down. Their faith is a burden you have to bear."
What happens to the Mages Guild if we fail?
"The same thing that happens to everybody. The world ends and everyone dies. And that's the best scenario.
More likely, they'll all become soul shriven slaves in Coldharbour."
Vanus readies the Light of Meridia with Gabrielle.

After you destroy the Dark Anchors, you will be ambushed by Molag Bal's council and your allies banished. Once you slay the council, Meridia will appear with your companions. Vanus and Gabrielle will focus on readying the Light of Meridia for use.

Vanus Galerion: "Gabrielle, focus all your energy into this! We can't let up!"
Gabrielle Benele: "I'm doing … my … best!"
Darien Gautier: "You deal with the crystal! We'll take care of our new guests."

You, Darien and King Dynar will defend them from the Dremora attackers. Soon the Light will be ready though Meridia will be at her limit.

Meridia: "You must hurry! My shield can't withstand much more of this!"
Vanus Galerion: "Almost … there!
Gabrielle Benele: "I can feel it, Vanus! We can beat this! We can—Darien, behind you!"
Darien Gautier: "Have no fear, beautiful Gabrielle! I have this under control!"
King Laloriaran Dynar: "You have to hurry! We can't hold them back much longer."
Meridia: "The light is ready! Quickly, release it!"
Molag Bal: "No! You cannot do this! I cannot fail!"
Gabrielle Benele: "Darien! Get back here! Darien!"

After you unleash the Light of Meridia you will glow with golden light and your vision will go white.

After the Assault[edit]

You will wake up in the Chapel of Light, Vanus will be with Gabrielle and a dying King Laloriaran Dynar.

If you speak to him, he will say

"I fear the King's wounds are too extensive for us to heal.
He … he doesn't have much time left."

After you speak with King Dynar and complete the quest, Vanus will mourn him and everyone else that died.

"We will honor the Ayleid King for his sacrifice this day. We will honor… everyone's sacrifice this day."
What happened out there?
"I'm still trying to work that out myself. When you touched the light, you erupted in holy flame. We thought we had lost you, truth be told.
I've never seen destruction like that before. Even Molag Bal reeled in pain from its touch."
Are we the only ones left?
"I don't know. Anyone not in the vortex should have been protected from the blast, but I have no way to know if they survived the actual assault.
Anyone inside besides us … I can only imagine the light took them quickly."
I'm ready to go home.
"As am I, my friend. As am I.
Let's leave this place once and for all. May the companions we lost along the way find their own way home."

Through a Veil Darkly[edit]

After accepting the quest from the Crown Store, a Mages Guild Message Stone will appear in your inventory. Activating this will summon a projection of Vanus:

"Good to see you again, my friend! I sent that message stone days ago. I was worried it hadn't reached you. Let me set aside what I was working on and then we can get down to business."
Why have you been trying to contact me?

"It seems I have a message for you. From an Oracle. It was passed along … in a manner that concerns me. But this isn't the proper way to hold a conversation.
Meet me at the Mages Guildhall in Davon's Watch. We can speak there."
What's wrong with speaking here?
"The Great Mage doesn't waste magicka. Important business should be conducted in person, in civilized surroundings. And matters involving an Oracle deserve a modicum of privacy.
Besides, no one else can see me. You appear to be talking to yourself."
All right. I'll meet you at the Davon's Watch Mages Guild.

Meet me at the Mages Guildhall in Vulkhel Guard. We can speak there."
What's wrong with speaking here?
"The effort required to sustain this projection is a waste of magicka. Important business should be conducted in person, and the Oracle's revelation deserve a modicum of privacy. Besides, no one else can see me. You appear to be talking to yourself."

Meet me at the Mages Guildhall in Daggerfall. We can speak freely there."

All right. I'll meet you at the Daggerfall Mages Guild.

If you did not start the quest through the Crown Store, you can still find Vanus at your alliance starting city. Either way when you meet him at the Mages Guildhalls in the alliance starting cities, you'll hear him hail you:

Vanus Galerion: "Over here! We have much to discuss, you and I."
Vanus Galerion: "Finally. I was beginning to think you'd never show up here."

Speak to him.

"Glad to see that my calculations and speculations proved correct. I assumed you'd eventually show up here, and as usual the Great Mage was right.
Now come closer. We have much to discuss, you and I."
What do you want to talk to me about?
"I recently received a message that was apparently meant for you. From an Oracle. It came to me in a most … unsettling manner.
Anyway, I determined the chances of meeting you here and there you are! Saves me the trouble of crafting a message stone."
Tell me about this message.
"Well, I was about to portal to Alinor for a proper meal, but since you're here now, we might as well discuss that message.
It came from Marieve, an Oracle of the Wyrd. I usually avoid soothsayers, but Marieve possesses a genuine talent."
And this Oracle mentioned me by name?
"Down to the last syllable. Her predictions are open to interpretation, but her words made me uneasy. A web of trouble … the island that went away … three dark princes … and your name.
After that, she stopped responding to my projections."
What does all of that mean?
"It means you need to find the Oracle and make sure she's all right. I enchanted a small boat to take you to an isolated part of Glenumbra, near her last known location.
And take this medallion of summoning. Use it to call upon me if the need arises."
I'll go and check on Oracle Marieve.

You can continue to ask him questions (to his chagrin):

"Hmm. You might want to get a move on. The enchantment I placed on that boat has a tendency to fade quickly when it gets wet. And Oracle Marieve indicated that she could use your help on that obscure, possibly apocalyptic matter she mentioned."
Before I go, I need a little more information.
"As it so happens, the Great Mage knows a great deal about a great many things.
What else can I tell you before you go?"
Why did the Oracle's message make you uneasy?
"Uneasy? I don't believe that's the word I used. Nevertheless, her prophetic verses tend to be loquacious and hauntingly beautiful. This one was … terse.
It mentioned trouble of some sort, a vanishing island, and dark princes—probably Daedra."
So what do those things mean?
"Well, trouble could mean almost anything, though nothing good. The island could refer to Artaeum, the home of the Psijic Order. It disappeared more than three hundred years ago.
And I have heard rumors about some sort of Daedric alliance …."
Why did she specifically mention me?
"You'll have to take that up with the Oracle. I suppose you figured into her vision or whatever it is that spawns her prognostications. If this message came from anyone else, I'd say it was some sort of ruse.
Marieve, however, is the genuine article."
Tell me more about Oracle Marieve.
"Oracle Marieve belongs to the Wyrd, a sisterhood of witches that revere the natural world. Marieve started receiving visions at a young age. Over the years, she has provided the Mages Guild and the Psijic Order with warnings we could act upon."
What kind of warnings?
"The usual sorts of dire predictions. Most recently, Marieve foresaw the deaths of Kings Folbert and Tamlien.
She has an unusual knack, an ability to see into other realms as well as into possible futures. Makes her useful to the Psijic Order."
If you think the Oracle is in danger, why didn't you bring her here?
"Believe me, I tried! Marieve has always been a loner, even more so than her fellow Wyresses. She said she had more to do and that you would come to save her.
So get to it! Go save the Oracle! Then get her to tell you more about her vision."
Tell me about the boat you enchanted./What does an enchanted boat do exactly?
"Surely you can puzzle that one out on your own? It will take you exactly where I told it to go.
But the magic isn't permanent. Best get a move on. You don't want to be on that tiny boat in the middle of the ocean when the spell wears off."
All right. Give me the enchanted boat and I'll be off.
"Give you the—? What, do you think I have a boat in my pocket? That it folds up and fits in your backpack? Ridiculous!
It's nearby, on the docks. I'll mark the location on your map."
And what do I do with the medallion of summoning again?
"I did get the name the Oracle provided me with right, didn't I? I've magicked the medallion so that you can use it to call me to your location—provided the need is great and I'm not otherwise occupied.
Be sure to save it for a special occasion."

Inside the Mines of Khuras, you can summon Vanus in the Old Wyrd Site:

Vanus Galerion: "The summoning worked perfectly, as I knew it would. I assume you need my assistance?"
"You decided to utilize the medallion of summoning. Very well. Then you might as well tell me how the search for the Oracle goes."
Not well. Daedra chased her from her dwelling and she came here, but all I found was this note.
"Let me see that. Hmm. A little too familiar a greeting for my taste, but the Oracle always follows her own path.
Ah, clever, Marieve! Very clever! She left us a secret message and hid it in plain sight."
Secret message?
"It's all in the turn of phrase. "Messages … elements … ritual … proper order." It makes perfect sense to someone who knows her well.
The Wyrd revere nature and the elements. We need to perform an elemental ritual to receive the message."
So what do we do?
"Look for items that represent the elements—air, earth, water. I'll find the prepared ritual site and you place the items in the proper order. That should do the trick.
A little ostentatious, but I suppose that's part of being an Oracle."
I'll find the ritual items.
"This is where we need to perform Marieve's ritual, I'm sure of that. Look around for any items that might be used to represent the elemental constants. That's the key to unlocking the message."

As you start to look around, Vanus will comment:

Vanus Galerion: "The Wyrds draw power from the Earth Bones, so elemental items make sense. Hmm. Three engraved bowls. This must be the ritual site."

If you talk to him then, he'll say:

"This is where we need to perform Marieve's ritual, I'm sure of that. Look around for any items that might be used to represent the elemental constants. That's the key to unlocking the message."

Pick up the Uncut Gemstone

Vanus Galerion: "A pure gemstone. You don't get much closer to elemental earth than that."

Pick up the Gourd

Vanus Galerion: "A cup of water. Well, that's disappointingly obvious. Marieve must have been in a hurry."

Pick up the Feather

Vanus Galerion: "What's that? A feather? Wait a moment—what's light as a feather? Air!"
Vanus Galerion: "Wyrd rituals aren't complicated. Just place the items in the proper bowls."

Before trying to solve the puzzle, you can get advise from the mage:

"It looks like you found items with ties to the Wyrd elements. Shall we proceed with Marieve's ritual?"
How do I begin the ritual?
"No doubt Marieve wanted us to place the items in the proper ritual bowls. Rustic magic can be a bit archaic for my taste.
I hope you can figure out which items go in which bowl."
I don't understand. What do you want me to do?
"Examine the primitive pictographs engraved on the bowls. Figure out which element each symbol represents, then place the correct elemental item in the corresponding vessel.
I'll stand back here in case my magic interferes with the Wyrd spellcraft."
Tell me more about the Wyrd.
"The sisters of the Wyrd serve the Ehlnofey, the Earth Bones. They revere nature and the elements. Rather primitive, but I appreciate the work they do.
I especially find the notion that they draw power from a tree to be delightfully rural."
What's the deal with the engraved bowls?
"I assume they're part of the ritual. See how each one is engraved with a different symbol? Match the proper item to the correct bowl and that should release the magic.
I'll stand here. Wouldn't want my excess energy to disrupt Marieve's spell."
I'll try to place the items in the bowls now.
"The ritual bowls are over there. The sooner you place the correct items, the sooner we'll receive Marieve's message."

Place the correct items in their respective bowls and a projection of Oracle Marieve appears:

Vanus Galerion: "Ah, something is happening."
Oracle Marieve: "Master Vanus, is that you?"

If you speak to him before the Oracle, he'll only say:

"Go on. The projection isn't going to talk to itself.
And really, I'm basically blazing with magical energy. I fear that if I get too close, I'll overwhelm Marieve's simple spell and this opportunity to communicate will be lost."

After Marieve is spoken to, you can talk with Vanus again:

"That sounded … not good. You really should make haste and get to Bewan. The Oracle has need of you."
Aren't you coming with me?
"No. This affair has taken on a completely different meaning. If Artaeum and the Psijic Order are involved, then I need to keep the Mages Guild out of it. What happens next falls on your shoulders.
You'll find Bewan on Auridon's west coast."
The Oracle mentioned Summerset and Artaeum. Can you tell me about them?
"Summerset is the ancient home of the High Elves. I was born and raised there. Marieve's vision suggests a threat to the island. There are people I need to warn.
As for Artaeum, it's the home of the Psijic Order. It doesn't currently reside on Nirn."
What do you mean Artaeum doesn't currently reside on Nirn?
"The island vanished three-hundred-and-fifty years ago. The Ritemaster hid it in some pocket plane for who knows what purpose. I studied at the Ceporah Tower during my time with the Order, but Psijic magic was too flashy for my taste."
Why won't you help me save the Oracle?
"I've done more than enough. My break from the Order and the subsequent formation of the Mages Guild has never sat well with my former teachers. If this involves the Psijics, I won't do anyone any good by insinuating myself deeper into this affair."
Who are these chaos-bringers that the Oracle mentioned?
"I have my suspicions. They're obviously connected to the dark princes that Marieve mentioned, but beyond that ….
I don't think they plan to harm the Oracle. At least not immediately. They have something more insidious in mind."
What do you think they want with the Oracle?
"Probably the same thing everyone wants. To get her to reveal something they want to know. And I'm concerned it might involve the Psijic Order.
Marieve's abilities allow her to unveil hidden things and find lost places. Places such as Artaeum."
What's the Psijic Order?
"The Psijic Order is a monastic society that follows the Old Ways of magic. I belonged to the Order myself back in the day, before a disagreement over another member led me to break ranks and form the Mages Guild.
We no longer see eye to eye."
The Oracle is a Wyress. How is she connected to the Psijic Order?
"Marieve not only sees into the hidden places, she has a way to contact them. It allows her to communicate with the Psijic Order's Ritemaster. I assume that's one way the Order keeps track of affairs on Nirn from wherever it is they hid their island."
And how would that interest these chaos-bringers?
"Because they might be able to use her to locate Artaeum. At least, that's my working theory.
I will alert the Mages Guild of Summerset about the threat and then go to the guildhall in Skywatch. Meet me there after you retrieve the Oracle."
I've been to Artaeum and met Ritemaster Iachesis. (If The Queen's Decree has been completed)
"Yes, I think I heard something about that. I still have a few contacts, you understand.
But there's still the matter of Marieve. Shouldn't you be getting to Bewan now? Find me at the Skywatch guildhall later and let me know how things turned out."

Rescue the Oracle from Bewan and she'll teleport you to Skywatch where Vanus will be waiting:

"Not that I was overly concerned, but I see you were able to retrieve the Oracle. Care to tell me what happened?"
I saved the Oracle from Mephala's realm. They tried to use her to find Artaeum.
"Mephala? She must be one of the three dark princes in Marieve's prophecy. You stopped this attempt, but I fear Summerset and Artaeum are still in danger."
What do you suggest we do?
"We? Because of the connection to the Psijic Order, I have to tread carefully. The Ritemaster, we don't exactly see eye-to-eye. You'll need to go to Summerset. Determine if the threat Marieve foresaw is imminent or a worry for another day."
I thought Summerset was closed to outsiders.
"Yes, the Altmer have a few peculiar notions. But as luck would have it, I heard that Queen Ayrenn has just issued a decree to open Summerset to immigrants and visitors. That's the perfect excuse for you to investigate the island."
What happens to the Oracle now?
"We'll show Marieve the hospitality of the Mages Guild and make sure she's fully recovered from her ordeal. Then I'll make sure to get her back home.
Thanks for your aid in this matter. Now get to Summerset and do what you do best, my friend!"
I've been to Summerset and Artaeum.
"You have? Interesting. Then I suppose you're well on the way to dealing with the problems facing the island. Good for you.
I'd say then that our work here is done."

After completing your business with the mage, Marieve and Vanus will speak:

Vanus Galerion: "A few of my colleagues are anxious to meet you, Marieve."
Oracle Marieve: "I suppose. After I examine your garden and collect my thoughts, if that's all right."
Vanus Galerion: "Of course, Oracle. Come inside whenever you're ready."

Vanus turns towards the guildhall and fades in the distance.

Half-Formed Understandings[edit]

Enter the vault and activate the first pedestal. You'll see a memory of a much younger Vanus and Mannimarco:

Vanus Galerion: "Just look at this place. How in Syrabane's name did you get the Ritemaster to unlock it for you?"
Mannimarco: "He rightly acknowledged our superior skill. It's only natural that he'd let us work here."
Vanus Galerion: "Well, it's quite a privilege."
Mannimarco: "Privilege? It's our right, Vanus. You mustn't be so humble all the time."
Vanus Galerion: "Oh, not this again …. Come, let's explore further!"

The memory of Vanus walks further into the Vault and disappears.

Mannimarco: "Secluded, cavernous—yes. This will be perfect for my research."
Ulliceta gra-Kogg: "That was Mannimarco! And Vanus Galerion—leader of the Mages Guild. Can you believe this? It must be Mannimarco's laboratory!"

Explore the Vault, and activate the second pedestal:

Vanus Galerion: "What have you done? This is just … repugnant."
Mannimarco: "Oh, Vanus, I would have thought you less judgmental. It's just a bit of puppetry. Nothing but arcane lift and spirit-handling."
Vanus Galerion: "That was a living thing, Mannimarco. You're edging close to a dangerous line. Too close."
Mannimarco: "You sound like the Ritemaster. The only lines are those you draw in your mind."
Vanus Galerion: "I'm not going to …. Please, just find a new avenue of research. All right?"

The memory of Vanus begins to walk away, and disappears.

Mannimarco: "Oh, Vanus, you fool. You will never understand true power."
Ulliceta gra-Kogg: "I always heard Vanus and Mannimarco were friends, but it seems like a complex relationship. Fascinating! Let's see what else we can find!"

Find and activate the third pedestal.

Vanus Galerion: "This is what happened to our classmates? What is wrong with you?"
Mannimarco: "Wrong? Honestly, grow up, Vanus. There is no right and wrong—only power and weakness."
Vanus Galerion: "You've made me for a fool. I can't believe I didn't see the rot infesting your soul."
Vanus Galerion: "You will answer for this eventually. I swear it."

The projection of Vanus disappears and the risen dead of Mannimarco's former classmates fall down dead on the floor.

Mannimarco: "And you, my friend, will answer for your short-sightedness when I eclipse you in every way."
Ulliceta gra-Kogg: "I always thought Mannimarco was confused. Misguided. Seems he knew exactly what he was doing. Amazing."

Now find the last pedestal and activate it. It appears that Mannimarco has Vanus in a choke-hold. He's lifted Galerion off the ground and seems annoyed.

Mannimarco: "You tattled, didn't you? You're a greater fool than I thought."
Vanus Galerion: "You tainted the Ceporah Tower! You're worse than a murderer."
Mannimarco: "Pathetic. Do you expect Iachesis to bind me here? No, he'll simply banish me from the island."
Vanus Galerion: "That won't be enough. You're a beast, Mannimarco. A beast that needs to be caged."

Mannimarco drops Vanus.

Mannimarco: "Of course you're right. And once I reach the mainland I'll show the world how right you are."
Mannimarco: "Now, if you'll excuse me, I have a ritual to complete."

Mannimarco proceeds to hit Vanus with a blast of magic, flinging him backwards, and the projection of Vanus disappears.

Cut Content[edit]

Several variations of Vanus' quest completion dialogue for Breaking the Shackle exists in the text file for Update 7:

"Of course! We accomplished exactly what we set out to do. Thanks to your help and my considerable magical power, the Great Shackle is no more!
We can't return home just yet, however. Cadwell claims that Molag Bal has one more arrow in his quiver."
"Yes, my friend. With your help and thanks to my considerable power, we destroyed the Great Shackle!
But we can't celebrate just yet. Cadwell claims that Molag Bal has one more trick up his sleeve that we still have to deal with."

This line would have occurred during Messages Across Tamriel or The Weight of Three Crowns:

"No, it's you who deserves my thanks. We're finally going to take on Molag Bal on our terms. It's you who brought this together."

Notes[edit]

  • If you have not started Through a Veil Darkly but have started Messages Across Tamriel, at the point during the later quest when Vanus enters the guild hall, there will be two versions of the mage in the same room. Not too surprising as he is a master wizard after all.
  • Vanus appears in The Improved Emperor's Guide to Tamriel, where he rescues Flaccus Terentius from the Daedra in Markarth. At the time, Mannimarco had a deal with Ard Caddach, which allowed the necromancer to make use of the city's expansive Dwarven ruins. Flaccus was taken there by Mannimarco's minions to be tortured, and was saved by the Great Mage.
