The Black Star is an altered Daedric Artifact rewarded to the player by Nelacar for cleansing the star of Malyn Varen as part of the quest named after this artifact, The Black Star, with the other possible reward being the restored Azura's Star. The main benefit of acquiring The Black Star is the bonus it offers to enchanters; the star is essentially a reusable black soul gem. Enchanting objects with The Black Star merely uses up the soul it was carrying, not the star with it like a regular soul gem. The Black Star does maintain one advantage over Azura's Star: it can capture both black and white souls, unlike Azura's Star which can only capture white souls.

- Although it's described as only able to hold humanoid souls, all souls can be captured. This may either be a bug, or Nelacar may be mistaken when stating this to the player.
