Talk to Master Aryon in the Upper Tower in Tel Vos for chores.
Raise to the rank of Magister to declare your intentions of becoming Archmagister.
Defeat Gothren to become Archmagister.
Return to Aryon to be named Archmagister.

Talk to Master Aryon in the Upper Tower in Tel Vos about chores or Advancement to learn that he can grant you the rank of Master now, which will give you an equal place on the Telvanni Council, but if you aspire to a higher claim, he can also grant you the title of Magister. By accepting the title of Magister, you are announcing that you deserve the title of Archmagister more than Gothren, who currently holds that rank.

If you choose to become Master, you won't be able to ascend to Archmagister of House Telvanni. However, if you change your mind later, you can ask Aryon to name you Magister.

[edit] Becoming Archmagister

If you choose to become Magister, Aryon will tell you that you have the support of the Telvanni Council, but you still have to dispose of Archmagister Gothren, who you will have to kill before taking his place (at this point you get +10 Disposition, +10 Faction Reputation and +2 Reputation, but only if you raised from the rank of Wizard). Gothren can be found in Tel Aruhn.

Return to Aryon when Gothren is dead and be promoted to Archmagister and receive an extra +10 Faction Reputation and +2 Reputation.

Gothren's Mouth, Mallam Ryon, will disappear when you kill Gothren.
If you have already killed Gothren, Aryon will promote you to Archmagister automatically, skipping the rank of Magister. This way you'll only get +20 Faction Reputation and +2 Reputation.
